The Jedi could have had an ashram like system for training of the general masses. Instilling virtues, spirituality, warrior training, pacifism training, scientific studies etc. Granted such a thing disturbs the concept of free will but the easiest way to strip suffering on a massive scale would be to alter the structure in the first place. People would still work not because its work but more so because people like cook outs. People like tinkering. People like drawing. People like building. People like helping others, usually. Granted its slower then inserting evil as a catalyst, but it allowed finer tuning. Modified up it can easily scale into other types of beings. A place for all. With side shows running to cater to various niches and so that others can still excersize free will. I remember someone once saying they wanted to turn this plane into a resort like place. Personally I prefer it as a nature preserve, and for symbiotic harmonic living which is what it should have been in the fucking first place. The concept was simple enough that even a monkey could understand. Warrior gardeners.

"It's too much work." That is fundamentally the answer: "it is too much work." The Jedi would have to rally an army, which they didn't believe in doing even during the New Sith Wars, using that army to crush an entire economic system, which as anyone obsessed with metaphysics will tell you is not in their wheelhouse, and then occupy and rebuild those worlds into fully functional democratic governments/states, which is just for starters expensive for a government who apparently had never heard of "raising taxes", "central banking" or "fiat currency". Easier to ignore it and be morally superior AKA: the position of 90% of abolitionists not in the Union Army or with John Brown. Or everyone who still votes for Democrats.

Not all that hard, though. He pretty much shrugs and drops the issue as soon as Watto shows the slightest bit of resistance. As much as Watto loved to haggle, you can't tell me the Jedi (or some other representative of the Republic) weren't capable of returning to Tatooine immediately after the liberation of Naboo and offering him whatever price he wanted for her. CLIEGG LARS eventually bought her. The man literally farmed MOISTURE for a living, and Watto sold her to this family. With the wealth that the upper levels of Coruscant swam in? Nope. Neither Qui-Gon nor the Jedi nor the Republic get a pass. The Jedi simply couldn't be bothered with Shmi. More to the point, it was in their best interest that Anakin be separated from his mother as wholly as possible. Because attachments. And fear.

@@delicheese6774 Well sure, at the time, and under the circumstances. But again - Qui-Gon had just wandered into his shop covered in dust and tried to Force-convince his way into new parts he badly needed for his crippled ship. The whole reason they were having that exchange about the worth of a pod versus two slaves was because Qui-Gon had no local currency and very little else of material value that would tweak Watto's interest. Watto KNEW, going in, that Qui-Gon's means were VERY limited. Watto had all the power in that moment. Why should he let himself be placated? What if they weren't limited, though? Imagine how different it might be if someone from the Order or from the Republic had gone back to Tatooine a couple of days later and offered to pay Watto four, five, six times whatever price he named for Shmi? No expense spared. Do you think he'd be implacable then? I sure don't. I think such an ambassador wouldn't even have to try HALF that hard. Watto thinks with his ledgers first and last (or however Toydarians keep track of their money). Offer him even twice Shmi's worth, and I think Watto would be DROOLING all over himself with unrestrained glee. He'd probably make her a farewell snack to take on the journey to Coruscant. With their credits, their means? The Republic could have done that, easily. The Order could have ASKED them to do that on their behalf. Padme herself could have asked, for the sake of a hurting little boy who had just ended the blockade on Naboo. (Heck, forget Anakin - how about for the sake of basic decency.) It would've been no skin off their backs at all. The Jedi, the Republic - they didn't have to start an interplanetary incident and end slavery itself on Tatooine if they didn't want to get that involved. Just do whatever they had to do to pacify one Toydarian's greed and get Shmi the heck out of there. (And again, how hard do you think that really was if CLIEGG could scrounge up enough to buy her??) We'll never know. Because not one of them bothered to even try - the new Padme novel notwithstanding.

In terms of outer-rim/hidden mid or core slavery; Most novelizations that give a figure put it around or a little over 10k knights circa the phantom menace. Presuming this disqualifies padawans and support members like the agri corp and that the masters aren't included and they have a weird hierarchy where there are exactly as many members on the top level as the level just below, that would mean about 20k full Jedi. 20k doesn't make a modern day army, let alone something sufficient to police a billion inhabited systems (or even the 70 million that warranted some sort of representation under the Empire). You can't even put one jedi per sapient species, cause the low estimate of sapient species puts it at around 5 million. When Jedi did get involved, it was typically either seeing something right in front of them or focusing on the big picture. Like stopping a war. There's too much to actually stamp anything out like that. The best option they have is to support stability in regions where slavery is an issue in an attempt to bring the local governments to a level where they can effectively fight against it. I'd also like to mention one thing about clones; conscription. Most governments and societies don't see conscription as slavery. Even those who have a problem with it tend to more have issues either with the military in general or with where troops are being sent in the first place. Its fairly rare to find a society which simultaneously supports the military but also doesn't think its okay to give people the option to either serve or be thrown in jail as an absolute (it varies between "mandatory short term service" and "the option should be available"). I would argue that raising battle thralls could be considered less morally damning than conscription, since with the conscripts you're taking people away from families and their own lives whereas those raised to be soldiers spend their entire lives with their family. Still slavery whether you raise them or pull them off the streets.
@5h0rgunn45
@5h0rgunn45 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with your point about military conscription being a form of slavery. Not many people ever bring this up. Some people argue that conscription is unfair because in most countries it only targets men, and want to expand it to include women just so it's fair. I say it should go the other direction. Forcing humans at gunpoint (if they desert, they die, or at best serve a long prison sentence) to kill other humans should be considered at least as morally reprehensible as forcing them to work under harsh conditions on large agricultural estates.

For any wondering about Hutt Space, essentially it was a large territory on the outer rim controlled by the Hutt Clan. The Hutt Clan was ruled over by Jabba the Hutt before the Clone Wars all the way to about 3 ABY. They made laws and regulations for the masses in their territory. Yes they engaged in crime within Republic and Imperial Space. However, so did the republic and Empire commit crimes in Hutt Space. They developed a live and let live relationship. However, after Leia killed Jabba, the Hutts went to war with each other vying to be the next ruler.

#5 Meant that the Jedi order was compromised on the other forms of slavery. In effect they were like *Professor Xavier's school for gifted students* as a military school with the authority of a juvenile delinquent centre, run as a to order child kidnapping ring. Such a group may raise moral questions in its former child soldiers as to its recruitment methods if it went full anti slavery. As for #1 - #3, once the Clone Wars and the Galactic civil war started there was the _realpolitik needs_ of having to fight, survive, and hopefully win. Fighting slavery (unless it's freeing your enemies slaves) is a distraction that could cost you the war. But before _"the troubles"_ that Palps and Plagueis organised, in the previous centuries of apparent stability, the Jedi could have been a very effective anti-slavery organisation. They would have removed a lot of corruption as well in the process of relieving suffering, and it may well have been the corrupt Senate that stopped them, but how? The Jedi had the independent authority to do what it pleased, and trying to limit them would just bring you to their attention, making you secret slave holding operation their next target (the Jedi were Ronan Farrow with Seal Team Six for backup). If they had set their sights on it, they may have well stemmed the corruption and dysfunction of the government. While making themselves the heroes of the common people, including the slave stable boys inspired to dance with brooms. They could take out slave holders easily (and they did occasionally) and in fact they were far better suited for that than general combat in an open war. And were more effective at anti-slavery missions than a military force would be. They were excellent Investigators and effectively spies and detectives. They could sniff out a criminal organisation and were the undisputed best at small scale combat, even when unarmed. A simple trick would be for a Jedi of the appropriate species to arrange to be taken for slavery and then use their powers to escape and take out the ringleaders. That is sort of what Luke did in ROTJ, except he walked in as a Jedi. Imagine if he was sold into Jabbas palace as a anonymous slave (although really, he should have got a job as a guard, like Lando did). A Jedi in such a scenario could dismantle the group (and the guards!) with his powers. Mind control a coup attempt, Force push a boss off a ledge or other 'assassination' method, and generally soften them up for a covert raid by a main force of Jedi. Or just use telekinesis to unlock the back door … … And get the slaves ready to escape when the time is right. In this case Twi'lek Jedi would be valuable and respected by the order, Wookie Jedi having no issue with being looked down upon. In a few decades the Jedi order could eliminate slavery and the criminal groups that flourish through it. The Hurts could be an issue, but carefully picking them off one by one, starting with the worse offenders, would inspire many Hutts to give up slavery. And if the Jedi have already eliminate their cohorts in other groups, it weakens their powerbase and reduces suppliers to the Hutts as well. The large number of Jedi at the time meant that profiling potential agents is difficult (they don't have facial recognition tech in Star Wars?), and once you come to their attention unless you're a Sith Empire you're basically screwed, they will get you.

Point number 1: yes, we would consider the taking of children to become Jedi "Knights" to be immoral and unlawful... But the Jedi themselves got around this by being a much more diverse organization than is shown in the films and series. We are shown the branch that has trained in martial arts, those trained to use a last-resort weapon to its maximum effect when no other recourse is available. However, being inducted into the Jedi Order as a baby or young child was technically a voluntary option. The Jedi would ask the parents to not have their child train with the force if they declined to give them the child... But nothing was actually stopping them from finding other force-sensitive tutors or organizations for their child to learn from. In some cases it would lead to a better life for the child in the order... But not always. That's not even including the ranks of Seekers, Sentinels, Consulars and Mystics. Many sought out new locations in the galaxy that were previously unmapped so that new worlds could be brought into the republic fold. Consulars would. Be trained in scholarly and diplomatic pursuits as their primary means of conflict resolution, thus providing an advanced education for those within the temple ranging from purely scholarly to practical field-study. There were also artisans, artists, motivational speakers, the ranks of the Jedi were just as varied as any other organization, especially since they welcomed all who wanted to embrace the life of a monk. Since we see such a narrow field of what the Jedi were trained for though, it looks worse than it was overall.

Because it got to a point in the galaxy where shifting-changes in the general standards had meant fewer and fewer Jedi, so as unethical as it sounds, they kind of did really have to do whatever nesscary to keep it stable and not let it downfall. But Yoda and the other high ranking members had always had the intention of keeping the light side of the force spread throughout the galaxy at a high rate, they would be using this at most to spread that idea on to others.

Africa, who has enslaved since the dawn of their civilization, is thought to have over 600,000 people enslaved in their country today! No outrage though, no violent protesting. Seems people only concerned about the past and only concerned if whites are involved. Over a million white s were enslaved in Africa and the Middle East BEFORE and during the time of the Atlantic Slave trade, it's partially because of the kidnapping of whites in the U.S. that caused tens of thousands of other whites give their lives to stop slavery all over the world! Funny, you never hear much about their sacrifice. Since less than 5,% of Americans alive today even had distant relatives that owned slaves, it's hundreds of thousands if times more likely that any random white person had relatives or ancestors that helped free slaves, not own them. Little food for thought.

In the Imperial Commander’s Handbook, it is stated that the Hutts, various crime syndicates, and slavers were all highly important players in the Galactic Economy. The Jedi/Republic may have wished to stop such things, but weren’t willing to face the economic consequences of that decision. Also, the Jedi are considered a religious order, and may have authority to take children. The clones are technically soldiers, and any soldier would be punished for deserting.

I can't argue with your analysis here. Very well done. I would even go further to say that the Jedi had grown to complacent to where they were cold to things happening around them and essentially fought in the Clone Wars to make sure things would either stay the same or at least go back to where they could be complacent/lazy again. I do have admit where fans call him a Grey Jedi but George Lucas said he was the ideal Jedi, Qui Gon's difference to the actual Jedi order is something that may add to the conclusion of your analysis.

@@CheapSkateGamer96 While some conflicts such as the so called war on terror may seem pointless the US has been able strike at the root of hostile organizations preventing larger attacks on western civilization. As a whole the federal government spends the most on Medicare, Social Security and "other spending" which includes education, transportation, agriculture etc. The federal government spends the least in federal debt and national defense surprisingly. Not to mention the Military in my experience uses it's budget much better than other areas of government mainly because everything they do has a lot of oversight. However, it should mainly the states who will receive the money regarding "other spending" so if things like education aren't being improved it's because a state isn't taking the steps to either ensure the money is used wisely or they don't care about improving these systems. Thor's Hammer The Imperial Guard has a wide range of commanders. There are some that use human wave tactics, but others that are tactical geniuses. Some of those human wave tactics would even be effective though. The death korp of krieg, who are basically droids made of flesh. The Salvlar Chem Dogs, who have literally nothing to lose. Then you have units like the Catachan Jungle Fighters and Armageddon Steel Legion, who regularly make the Orkz decide they don’t want to fight in a region anymore. As for the production capacity? The Imperium can match and even exceed that of the CIS pretty easily, we have a galaxy of factories constantly churning out equipment for our armies. And I’d like to see the CIS try and use a production line after the Minotaurs or Black Templars chapters of astartes get done with it. Even super battle droids don’t begin to threaten the astartes. Not to mention that the Imperium takes on the necrons and wins with fair regulality. And the Necrons don’t even need to be taken back for repairs, they just get up by themselves in the field and go back to fighting. Not to mention their standard infantry weapons tear things apart on a molecular level. The CIS is packing nothing in comparison to that. Basically, it’s never a fair comparison to put something against 40k, because everything in 40k is ludicrous in scale.

The real reason for the clone slave army was because by Obi-Wan's own admission, the jedi needed them. I get where you're coming from on the child slavery thing, but the main reason as to why the jedi did that was because, to put it quiet simply, the jedi were convinced that if they recruited adults, said adults would abuse their teachings far too frequently. It's disgustingly pessimistic and exploitative, even cowardly to a certain extent, but it's how they thought things would work. As if to spit in their faces that they were wrong, Alexi Grayn the head of black sun at one time, was a force-sensitive rejected from the jedi order for being too old, and when Luke, the best jedi ever by George Lucas' own admission, began his training with Ben he was 19 and in his early twenties when he started with Yoda, and all the jedi who became sith, besides Anakin, were taken in by the order when infants. As for why they allowed the outer rim slavery, I can sum it up with one word: Cowardice. If the jedi really wanted to, they could telekinetically grab slavers and force them to free their slaves and then kill them from halfway across the galaxy away, or they could build a stealth armada and stealth droid army to liberate them. Mind you, that slavery even exists in a galaxy where droids and advanced machines are "a dime a dozen.", is due obviously to sheer stupidity. But that's the thing about star wars: The writers of star wars are fully aware that the bad things that are chosen by individuals and groups, are chosen due to utter stupidity, and they want to teach children that.

Ok, but that doesn't explain the CLONE ARMY THAT THE REPUBLIC PAID FOR. the clones didn't have rights, and never had the choice to join the GAR. The Jedi happily led them.

@@LeviathanTamer31 But the Jedi accepted a SLAVE ARMY, no questions asked. The Jedi don't care about slavery. Alternative and more ethical options include, but are not limited to: drafting/conscripting civilians (most countries do this), droids (separatists proved it's possible), allow the separatists to secede (peaceful), or hire an army of mercs (assuming the republic can afford it). None of these solutions involve slavery.
@LeviathanTamer31

No, they did care. It's why Obi-Wan contacted Yoda about all of it. They came to the conclusion of a few facts. 1) The Grand Army of the Republic was so far out of date it didn't even have any proper veterans with which to train new recruits that were drafted from civilians. They would've been throwing even more lives into the meat grinder than they did with the Clones. 2) Almost every single Mega Corporation capable of mass-producing droids for The Separatists sided with The Separatists, because ultimately The Separatists was an Oligarchy with Mega Corporations at its head. So they definitely couldn't do a Droid army. 3) With most of the Mega Corporations leaving, they were taking incredibly valuable resources with them, this would've weakened the Republic even more than the war, and worse yet if they just let them secede it would give a signal flag to other powers that they could secede without any fuss. Thus fragmenting the Republic until it ultimately collapses on itself. 4) The Republic could barely afford the Clone Army, as evidenced by a whole mini-arc being based around Padme trying to keep the Republic from bankrupting itself to try and match the Droid output that the Separatists were maintaining. A Mercenary Army would've been even MORE expensive than that and it wouldn't even be a guaranteed victory as no mercenary army that could be assembled on such short notice would ever hope to match the sheer numbers of the Droids. -------- This war tied up the Jedi in not only Political matters, but also military matters. The Republic simply wasn't capable of fighting the power of The Separatists without a miracle, and wouldn't you know, Palpatine delivered one to them. Star Wars: The Clone Wars touches upon this even further when it stopped being an episodic cartoon about Space Wars and started resembling an actual civil war. A bloody and horrendous affair that left innocents dead on both sides and morals being crossed in order to attempt to assure victory. This isn't even touching on the fact that even if the Jedi *didn't* want the Clone Army, they still wouldn't have done anything to free them beyond asking the Senate to look into the matters of the Kaminoans cloning slaves. Because by their own code and as representatives of The Republic, they couldn't interfere with Kaminoan society. ------- Note: This is why I shortened it to "-but Politics/War."

@dylan alvarez I mean, the Republic had a few veterans, but they were mostly from random skirmishes like Admiral Yularen who fought against Admiral Trench. But no *real* war on the scale of the Clone Wars. Even then it wouldn't have been up to the Jedi to train them, it would've been the Republic's job. The only reason the Jedi were involved with the Clones was because of Palpatine's machinations to smear the Jedi for owning a Slave Army and fighting a war despite supposedly being Peacekeepers. So... congrats to all of you for falling for Emperor Palpatine's propaganda even with having more knowledge about the Clone Wars than the public would've.

Did the Star Trek Galaxy have some kind of Interdiction technology? Until Transwarp Drive was invented to attack someone while they were in warp (see Excelsior and Dreadnought Classes), there wasn’t really a way to stop someone from just warping past all your defenses and attacking your home world before running away at warp speed, right?
@curseofgladstone4981
@curseofgladstone4981 5 жыл бұрын
You can attack someone at warp if you can catch up and then connect your warp bubbles. But that requires you to have a ship capable of going as fast as they are. But detection may be a problem. Star bases may have the tech to sense incoming warp signatures but I'm not sure if ships do beyond a few seconds to maybe a minute of warning.

Regarding Padawan soldiers being physically but not mentally mature enough for combat... It's a strange misconception, that age based 'maturity' enables people to cope with harsh realities, like war. A person shielded from experiencing violence when they are young will be ill equipped to cope with it later on in life, no matter how old they are when they finally face it... In fact, they are likely to struggle, as they'll suffer the psychological impact of having their worldview destroyed at the same time as the physiological effects of traumatic situations. People who cope best are those who have always known things to be that way.

The slavery issue is how after 1000 generations of "peace" the Jedi Order caused imbalance in the force. Imagine Obi Wan asking Qui-Gon, "are we the baddies, then?" after being told of the prophecy of The One who would restore Balance to the Force.

i honestly belive that qui-gon did plan on gooing back to anakin's mother, i think that after the naboo problem was solved, he would ask padmé a big chunk of money, and go back to tatooine, and buy her, and bring her to coruscant, where she would be safe and sound... but qui-gon died, and unfortunaly he didnt tell this plan to ayone...

Truth be told, if Obi-Wan was a good person he wouldn't have needed Qui-Gon to tell him to go and free his new Padawan and brother's mother from Slavery. He would have just done it. Especially since Anakin did voiced out his concerns about his mother. But Obi-Wan is not a truly good person. He's the kind of individual who would label someone he hasn't even met yet as "another pathetic lifeform". He left his brother to burn alive instead of giving him a mercy killing. He pushed Luke to commit Patricide. He did not fight for Ahsoka when she needed help the most. He faked his own death and used and abused the emotional state of the people closest to him simply to fulfill a mission. And truth be told he was very toxic for Anakin in general.

1. I think it's a valid point for the Jedi to want to watch force-sensitives closely. Better apart of the Jedi Order than free to possibly wreak destruction after their formative years. The Jedi Order doesn't value liberty to the highest like we do in reality. 2. Seen it said elsewhere as well that while the Jedis questioned the creation and usage of the Grand Army of the Republic, how else were they going to fight off trillions of separatist droids. 3. He does try to argue for Anakin's mom. Watu just wouldn't have it and Qui-Gon knew that Anakin was the more vital of the two to liberate. Also any story can be made to look like good was only done because it was beneficial to that person or group. 4. A job for the Galactic Senate that is. The Galactic Senate has power enough is they cared for it to pass laws to prevent indentured labor.
