Why didn't Victoria Justice blow up? (ariana grande feud, blackballed..?)

Tori Vega was supposed to be the straight character, and all of the people around her (Andre, Jade, Cat, etc.) were supposed to be over the top caricatures. The problem is that the audience began to see Victoria Justice as safe and boring rather than her character playing the important role of the "straight man". More than that, because her character was very vanilla, it was easier to project real life rumors onto her than onto someone like Ariana Grande who played a kind hearted ingenue. In conclusion, the real villain has always been and will always be Dan Schneider.

that's a really good point about the rumors! I never thought of that. Cat was such a sweet innocent character, that people thought Ariana could do no wrong, and that Victoria was the evil weirdo. I feel that Dan is the villain in terms of how he treated young teens, but I don't feel he had anything to do with the Victoria hate train.

But it bothers me that he as a grown man created an environment on his sets that encouraged bullying in a business that already chews children up and spits them out. Children whose prefrontal cortex aren't fully developed have to fight off bullying accusations, when it was the adults around them who fostered the behavior. But again, that relates more to my general beef with him than with Victoria Justice specifically.

I know Cat was a caricature. They changed up dumb blonde to dumb redhead. I also know jade was a caricature. Beck was strictly meant to be eyecandy as his character lacked any kind of substance. But how was Andre a caricature. Wasn't he the only other normal person in the show.

@@west533 He wasn't a caricature per se. He did at times play the role of straight man, but he was THEE music man. He was either playing one of the many instruments that he had mastered or doing that whole bit with his grandma. Tori's entire purpose was to be juxtaposition to the weird and wild world of students who randomly burst into song and dance routines and find themselves in wacky situations due to their creative nature. Tori's character is purposefully more well rounded.

I do agree Cat, Jade and Andre were by far the best vocalists who could command a scene (and that’s ultimately why Ariana blew up, along with better management), but people did a little too much on Tori’s character, cause I always thought she was at least fine. Not the biggest standout, but not insanely annoying or frequently boring. It was really cool to see her get her own show after Zoey 101, cause I always loved Lola, but I was really hoping the girl who played Quinn (Erin Sanders) would get one too.. 😩 She was my fav. Though, she did still work on Nickelodeon with Big Time Rush.

@@panda22518 Fully believe that the show was created to launch Victoria Justice's career, like Miley Cyrus's Hannah Montana. Justice was already a star with Nick so they wanted to bank on someone safe and they already had experience with. Grande was most likely cast later and if the show wasn't built around Victoria Justice they would have swiftly made Grande the lead, there's no question about it. I do think Cat and Sam was a bit of course correction, especially when they realized how bankable both Ariana Grande and Jeanette McCurdy were. Different tangent but I feel Jeanette McCurdy could have been one of the biggest comic actresses ever, she's got amazing talent and is just insanely funny. However I do respect that acting didn't make her happy and I wish her all the happiness with her directing and writing career.

@LunaNightshade yes it is. It's the uniqueness that makes a person stand out from the crowd of other good singers. Just look at Rhianna, she doesn't have the vocal ability of a Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, or Ariana Grande(who sounds similar to Mariah), but due to the uniqueness of her voice, it set her apart from everyone else. The actual most important thing though the singer needs for a successful career are good catchy songs. Without that, they have nothing....no matter how well you can sing.

i personally think that ariana’s character had a huge role to play in her success. it may have been harder for her to break that mold, but people loved cat so much that anything ariana did was going to be loved by her fans. i remember looking up “how to be more like cat” and there was a whole wikihow dedicated to it, so it went as far as people wanting to be like her… which we still see today. i also think her first song featuring mac miller was really smart, i remember everyone was talking about the video and whether or not they were dating. i think it’s a matter of right place and right time, with ariana’s talent securing her a spot on the charts.

I remember following Ariana before she got big, because there was this time when people put covers on youtube and I used to like them. I always thought Ariana would get famous and I always felt like Ariana had the voice, but none of her songs ever hit me the way I expected them to hit me because her songs frankly aren't all that great... She was better at singing the songs of other people. I think what it comes down to is, that Ariana was already a very experienced singer back then because of broadway, and the TV fame had to land her on some producer's plate that was going to make her famous because Cat, the character, was popular. Ariana put herself out there enough and Victoria is just generally more reserved. I don't think continuing to compare the two makes sense for anyone because these women don't have much in common except the show they both played a role in. ALSO, I know you're not supposed to say it, but after watching CJtheX's video about her, Ari was a good actress too. That is kinda important too

They didn't get hate bc they weren't main characters (ppl didn't expect much from them) besides Andre was the one who wrote for Tori (most of the time) and sang/ played an instrument for her, and the fact that Tori always got the singing parts over the others helped ppl to bashed her and see her in a bad light ( ppl then realized that the others could sing relatively 'better' than Tori since they were previously on broadway) I think the way how they wrote the show/characters is what helped slowed/stopped her rise to 'fame' they made the other characters lives/personality seem more interesting (Cat got the reversed role of a dumb blonde instead she got the dumb red head girl ( she has some weird shit going on at home with her brother) Jade got the rich Goth/emo, Robbie was the weird friend who had a puppet for a friend and Andre was the nice guy the 'normal' one besides Tori but he was also weird and Beck was your typical 'hot guy' and all of them had some weird home life except Tori)

I grew up a lot with victorious and I do feel bad for Victoria after watching everyone else get famous off a show, that must be hard to see others (miley, selena, Ariana) I feel like after this one incident between her and Ariana their whole fan base just wouldn't take it when Victoria and Ariana both tried to stop people from giving online hate. In my opinion I do think they are both very different singers. With the right song Victoria could of had a good singing career but because of the fans I feel like it was them who wouldn't let anyone else discover her. Idk about you but I feel like if she did start now and really pushed to get herself out there it would be good for her. A fresh start maybe. Finding a new fan base and finding herself. Ariana Grande was literally known for being a diva when her music career first blew up, yet she was excused constantly for her nasty behavior in those beginning years. I am sure she has changed and grown, she seems very lovely now. But Victoria was the lead character for god's sake, and the show/character was quite literally written for her, I don't know why people couldn't just accept it. I get that her character had a lot of unfair advantages/opportunities over the other characters, but that's on the writers, not her. also I never thought tori was that bad. realistically speaking i'd probably old be friends with tori, andre, and beck. jade was an iconic character, but unnecessarily mean, robbie become too creepy in later seasons, cat was overwhelming, and trina was full of it. yes tori was annoying, but was NOT that bad. But when you take an ordinary "boring character" as the lead, and have them surrounded by a wacky, dynamic supporting cast, of course people will come after the lead the most. Victoria although still very talented, might not have the same vocal talent as the rest of her former castmates, but there a lot of folks in the industry that aren't all that great of vocalists either, selena gomez cant sing even if her life depended on it, let's give vic a break. Anyways she's beautiful, seemingly nice, I'm rooting for her comeback, whether it's in film/television or music, I'll support her !

I feel like I remember reading that Avan was dealing with a lot of shit during the later seasons of Victorious, including a drinking problem. And he's spoken pretty plainly in interviews in the past several years that he just.... didn't like the show or his character. It gives real R. Patt as Edward vibes honestly. People might dislike Beck as a character, but I don't think anybody disliked Beck more than Avan himself. Knowing all that, I don't think it's surprising he doesn't appear in much Victorious media post finale - I think it's a pretty safe assumption that he'd probably associate that show with some real bad years of his life. If anybody's interested, he seems to be doing a lot better now though! He starred in the recent Resident Evil movie, and has seemed to move into fun artsy indie movie direction, which he seems to love.

i think if ariana had explicitly said it wasnt victoria then the fans would move on to the next target and the next, speculating about everyone ariana's ever worked with until the "drama" was all that would be talked about in relation to any of them, i think someone made the right decision to not keep talking about it (see black femininity's video on destinys child and you can see that this was where beyonce would have headed if she hadnt stopped talking about the band's drama) if anyone was a bully on nick sets it was dan, but he has so much of a hold over everyone still that no one can speak out against him i liked victorious as a teen but rewatching it when i was older, tori was often self-centred but thats nick's fault not hers, they wrote her that way. when we had a supporting characters that were more interesting and often more talented than the main character, it was never going to work out well for any of them. i think theres also a big problem in characters and actors having the same name (raven, miley, tori, drake, josh etc) because fans (especially young ones) have difficulty differentiating between the character and the actor which obviously leads to a lot of misconceptions about the person and likely gives them a sort of identity crisis especially when they start these roles as kids/teens. i think that the adults behind these shows took advantage of the child&YA casts' inability to effectively communicate and resolve conflicts, so the miscommunications behind why victorious ended (abruptly, not even a finale, which fuels a lot of the "what on earth happened??" reactions from cast+fans) so the cast was left to make their own assumptions, and were perhaps even told its x person's fault when it might not have been, so the cast might have all been pitted against each other by the studio and by their own management

She has a fantastic voice and is a really talented person. Her character Tori well she was a girl who basically came out of a regular to a school that is creative basically a different world. To be fair all of the kids in Hollywood arts already have been use to the environment. Honestly a lot of people can relate to her being the new kid in school. Honestly the duets with Jade and Cat were great. It would have been great to see her blossom more. I hope she gets more projects because she is talented.

I was having a conversation about this the other day, I feel fans have a way in what sells and what doesn’t. I do feel Victoria is definitely a phenomenal actress. Maybe that’s her lane. As far as the show Victorious, I feel she was overshadowed by her castmates. Even as you said Beck was kinda plain, I enjoyed him over Tori. Off the top of my head, she stood up for Beck when he was being mistreated, yes it did get him fired, but she was doing the right thing defending him, she helped Trina be able to stay at Hollywood Arts, she refused to kiss Beck because he was Jade’s (who, mind you, was never kind to her) ex-boyfriend, took one for the team when Jade pretending Tori punched her, and that kind of just is the surface of the good things Tori has done. She’s not all bad, people just focus more on the bad than the good I think. Impulsive’s a great way to put her personality though. And I’d definitely say she isn’t boring, just overshadowed by the stronger personalities of the show that, in comparison, she’ll seem less interesting. People tend to exaggerate it a lot though because of bias, I guess. But Tori isn’t as awful of a person as people make her out to be, I’ll bet the people who say that aren’t that nice either, lol.

Ariana’s response to the show getting canceled always felt like BS to me. If she was talking about Victoria (what other girl from the show could it be about) her not wanting to tour with the rest of the cast would make no sense as to why the show didn’t get picked up. If she’s on tour with BTR, more than likely she’s singing songs from Victorious which is great promo for the show. She didn’t really have a lot of singles to sing at the time. Lastly the show got canceled because Nickelodeon decided to put all their focus and energy into Sam & Cat.

I truly think that the real reason why people started hating on Victoria/Tori was because of the success of Ariana’s career and god forbid there can’t be two talented women existing without the need to compare the two. I genuinely think that no one really had a problem with Tori as a character until Ariana became successful then people started making Tori into some terrible kind of villain who wasn’t as talented compared to the rest of the cast which wasn’t true. Then that whole “I think we all sing” video which was blown way out of proportion resurfaced and it made it seem like Victorious was some jealous hater who’s career failed. Suddenly the problem was that they made Tori get all the attention when the show was made specifically for Victoria so of course she got all the main attention. It’s not like a “Glee” situation where the show is supposed to be centered around a group of characters but they only mainly focus on Rachel’s character and act like she’s the greatest singer in the world while actually being a bad character/person. And this is in no way blaming Ariana for being successful but just calling out those who constantly compare and pit talented women against each other and Stan culture.

I never hopped on the Victoria Justice hate bandwagon. I always liked her. However, I did have some issues with her Victorious character Tori bc she was nice but could be annoying sometimes (as all characters are) and so I understood why most people made fun of the character Tori Vega, but it wasn’t fair that those criticisms eventually bled into actual hate for Victoria Justice herself bc she’s a real person with feelings and she seems kinda sweet. She may have issues I don’t know about bc I don’t personally know her obviously but she didn’t deserve all of that hate. Regardless of whether I think the side characters (and the actors who played them) like Jade, Cat, and Andre were more interesting and had better voices and such, that doesn’t mean Victoria was untalented. She held her own and kept up with the rest. She blended very nicely. She may not have had an outstanding voice like Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies (who both literally came from broadway) but Victoria could still sing and she could have had a more promising career if she were given better/catchier songs outside the show. HOWEVER, the “I think we ALL” meme will forever be iconic and funny idc sue me! Victoria was hilarious without even trying to be! 😂 I also saw her tweet saying she’s excited to be a meme so I hope it wasn’t too bad on her. 😭 On another note: Not to sound all conspiracy theorist but my theory on why Victoria didn’t make it big in Hollywood like Ariana did is because she didn’t sell her soul. Victoria was more of a natural homegrown person with parents who weren’t really in the industry too deep, like they didn’t have as many connections as Ariana’s parents had. Victoria came up as a kid in the industry but when things got serious as she got older she probably refused to sell out, that’s why we didn’t see anyone close to her die and then see her shoot to insane stardom and become all sexual and sensual. Ariana grew up on broadway with family members who were in the industry, and had connections… you know the rest… No hate to Ariana tho just stating facts, she was born and lowkey groomed to be a star, I love her and her music is great… but it’s kind of obvious what had to happen for her to reach that certain level of fame and fortune as it is with most people who make it big in Hollyweird… Last Side Note: Alexa Nikolas lowkey sounded and looked like Elizabeth Gillies in that video at 18:00.

Just watched both The Way and Gold for the first time and yeah someone did Victoria dirty…it’s kind of crazy how both mvs seem to have the same budget but Ariana’s used it in a way that feels more creative and uh, I guess representative of the image they were going for…remnants of cat with the red hair and girly dresses but just a tad more mature with the onscreen pda and black dress. And also they have an established rapper featured on her debut solo song. So it’s like she has mac millers fandom aaand her victorious fandom to support the release. But all that aside, The Way is just way more catchy and fit for the mainstream than Gold sounds. Tbh Gold sounds like a scrapped Victorious song. It sounds like a song a character would sing if they’re getting a big ego over fame. Like it has a double meaning about a relationship but also feels reminiscent of the point made in your video. Nick spent money and years prepping VJ to be their pop starlet. The lyrics “bet your money on me. I’m gold. Want to be more than your company” feels like it alludes to her relationship with Nick. So idk interesting debut song. To be honest I’ll never understand how the child actor to mainstream music artist pipeline works. Like I get how Nick would want VJ to be a star and make the company money, but if this song dropped after Victorious ended, how would that money get to Nick? Anyways it’s fun comparing the two mvs. They both look like they have the same budget yet one just executes the “debut pop singer” theme better in my opinion. Justice can definitely sing but she was screwed over due to essentially just a weaker song, weaker concept (why’d they take the kpop route and try to squeeze in a rap? Leave that to Leon lol. He honestly should’ve been featured in Gold. The two of them always had great synastry when they performed on the show and could’ve given the audience just that small hint of Tori we were all used to. Not to mention she probably would’ve had more chemistry than with that generic white man they shoved her with.) All that being said I spent way too much time typing this only for it to probably not even be read, but if there’s a chance to give my two cents on anything at any given time, I will do it. Love how ari and victoria and the whole cast all seem to care for each other. Love how they both look a little awkward and nervous in their respective debut mvs. Victorious will still always be one of the best Nick shows and kids show in general of the 2000s/early 10s. The thing when it came to Victoria's music career is it wasn't any different than the act she played as Tori. Victoria's voice is also more alto, most of the music they gave her I felt didn't fit her voice / extend her voice. What I mean by extend is like test different genres. (Have you seen Miley cover artic monkeys?? It was so fitting and so good) So what Miley did and even Ariana is something I wanted to see from Victoria. It could have been anything. Instead of blossoming she stayed that safe kid friendly pop artist. When I listened to her album "Gold" I thought it would be something off of Victorious. It didn't show me anything different from the songs "Begging on your knees" and stuff like that. It was disappointing. Becks character was more then Toris for me because of the relationship he had with Jade. I have re-watched it as an adult and if you do the ending kinda fits if you look at it. I loved Victoria Justice, and her music, but now as an adult I wouldn't listen to it.

Although I never really watched Victorious as a kid, I didn’t watch a lot of Nickelodeon shows in general this was still a very entertaining and interesting video to watch and it made me wanna go check out Victoria’s music and see for myself why she didn’t reach the level of stardom that Ariana did.

The « I think we all sing » thing always seemed so ridiculous for me because had she said that after Liz talked about Ariana it would have been very self-centered, but before that, Daniella actually was talking about how Liz also sung a lot and so she just wanted to say that in the end, they all do it to a certain extent. Also, I’m pretty sure they were all having fun together during that interview and so she was in a good mood and didn’t really think twice about what she was saying, which we all do in everyday life but because she’s a celebrity she’s supposed to not be human.

My whole friend group and I were very badly bullied through all our school years. I'll never forgive those girls for the nasty, two-faced attitudes. But also, I acknowledge how young we were - and I have to hope that if they remember how they treated me then, they'd feel awful about it. Most of these girls are married with families or successful jobs now. I still can't stand them. But I also don't begrudge them. And I wouldn't want other people to use the way those girls treated me over ten years ago as proof that they're bad people. Sometimes, kids are brats. It should be addressed and handled at the time. They should cop to it as adults. But it shouldn't be an anchor that sinks them for life. All of this to say, I think holding Victoria - or ANYBODY'S - bullying accusations against them from when they were thirteen, and using it as social leverage, is worse than a thirteen year old bully to start with. A thirteen year old bully is a brat who should have been taught better and faced consequences - literal adults hanging onto that situation for dear life is uhhhhh concerning as hell.

Ari was just very interesting, very cute and bubbly where Victoria was more like the “regular” girl who you know at school who you speak to but she never does anything outstanding. I hope it doesn’t sound shallow but things are what they are because it’s just what it is. I do hope she gets better. Me and a friend are writers and a lot of the time we were compared. Most liked mine, most liked hers but we had to help our followers understand that we were just two different writers that did not have the same style.

Also poor marketing/promotion was very bad,here is why: Victoria relied on her fans, didn't do a heavy promotion If she promoted her Single it would be a great cute summer song/moment,even if the Arianators was giving Victoria hate, because back in 2013 Victoria and Ariana both had the same fanbase that already existed by victorious. Although she's a very talented actress,but people lost interest after the"Funsize flop" + "Ariana Imaginary fued",she starred in eye candy it was such a great catch for Victoria to break out from Tori image,but again people will ALWAYS mention her under Ariana's shade The only way for Victoria to blow up is to back to music with a efforts,good promotional process,or work with great actresses like zendeya or Dove Cameron

To me the way Ariana grande got famous almost immediately after leaving victorious and Sam and cat is because she was really dedicated to music after she was everywhere , she did interviews (she's extraordinarily pretty) and she did collabs with really popular people like big Sean, Mac Miller in her some of her first songs after .put your hearts up. So people recognized her then she started making her own music like .no tears left to cry. Which really blew because she had already worked on herself soooooooooo yh😎

i actually quite liked tori as a kid! i’m autistic and of course, wasnt liked that much by my peers in primary school, and i projected myself onto tori. she was made to be the cool, quirky rising star that will succeed even if she experiences set backs and i just wanted that for myself. in retrospect i think cat is the best character in that whole show but victoria justice was my little escape from childhood isolation

She was my favorite when I was a child...but I really liked Cat (Ariana) too and I always thought she sung the best out of the cast. Ariana had the best voice in the show...I believe she deserves her success, and I'n sad Victoria got so much hate for nothing
