I think that the reason he used his diary was, it was his first experiment, after he decided to act, and it was the only object he had on him at the moment. He didn't obtain anything of significance until he visited Morfin, and killed his father and grandparents. Thus, he used the family's ring he took from Morfin, not understanding what it truly was. He committed both murders before he graduated. The rest of the objects, he stole just after graduating, except for Nagini, who he ran across as a wraith in Albania, and possessed at first. The deaths weren't really important, as one was an old tramp, and another, a local Albanian peasant, according to JKR. Bertha Jorkins was another, who was killed to turn Nagini into one. His father and grandparents were the only ones of importance to him, besides Hepzibah Smith, who he saw as having something belonging to him. It's debatable if he had intended on creating one with Harry that night, as it was believed that was accidental. Voldemort didn't know what happened that night, as if he did, he would never have turned Nagini into one, which made eight. Harry, then, wasn't really a horcrux, but some sort of possession by the shard that latched onto him. Voldemort had no idea that happened.
@cathygrandstaff19573 күн бұрын
Yeah that’s a good point, in the moment of his death he may have instinctively used the Horcrux spell, something he’d become quite good at by that point, to try to save himself. However since it didn’t have a clear target it latched onto Harry. Alternatively he was planning on making a final horcrux with Harry’s death and would have used some trophy or other stolen from the Potters in the same way the ring was stolen from his grandfather.

Forget the items used to create them, it's the locations that truly makes no sense. He could have used the Founder Artifacts and then hidden them across the world. If he'd hid one in a cave in the Himalayas, one deep in the Amazon rainforest, etc. (all locations hidden under every secrecy spell he knew) then it wouldn't have mattered _what_ the items were, because *no one* would have been able to track all of them down if they were scattered all over the world in locations with no connection to him. Instead he not only hides all in Brittain, his home country, but he does so in locations connected to himself. He created a treasure hunt, not an insurance against death. I personally like the way horcruxes are expanded upon in the "For Love of Magic" fanfiction, by Noodlehammer. Not only does the item used require a strong emotional connection (so you can't use a pebble, unless maybe if you spent a decade carrying around a favorite one specifically to make it viable), but it also had severe effects on the creator. For one, a horcrux was not just an item that prevents death but _a part of your very self_ so just hiding it at the bottom of a lake would have been just as impossible for you as cutting of a leg. You *could not* help but treating your horcrux as a part of yourself, and thus the location it was left at would need to appeal to you as a place to stay. And secondly, because the soul piece in a horcrux was static (the diary Riddle was still 16) it meant that parts of your personality also got stuck at that moment (meaning that part of Voldemort was still an angsty teenager with daddy issues, and this got worse every time he made another one, leading to the unstable insanity we see in him in present day).
@olesuhr72719 күн бұрын
The horcruxes have to be found again when needed, so easily recognizable objects give good meaning. Riddles mistake was to choose objects related to Hogwarts. Added to that, he was up against Dumbledore and his acute intelligence. A grain of sand or a pebble will disappear over time.
@matthewpatrick726319 күн бұрын
A bigger mistake was having them all in England. Why didn't he leave the diadem in Albania, for example? Even if he was afraid Helena would tell someone else its location, he could have still hidden it somewhere else in Albania.

You'd have to destroy the moon! Do you know how much damage that would do to the world? Granted, he'd have to GET to the moon first, and that would be a major issue.

I wonder if it is possible to turn an imagine of yourself in the form of a painting into a Horcrux? With magical portraits having essentially a mind of their own and able to interact and even react when faced with danger. Not to mention some have been able to leave the confines of their canvases. This makes me wonder if Voldemort could have gotten an artist to paint his portrait, then murder said artist to turn his portrait self into a Horcrux. In such a scenario, this Horcrux could be practically unkillable, especially if his portrait is placed in Hogwarts among the many other paintings adoring the walls of the school. They won't be able to kill his portrait self without also destroying every other painting in the school.

But Lord Voldemort use tin cans or old potion bottles to guard his own precious soul? You are forgetting what I have showed you. Lord Voldemort liked to collect trophies, and he preferred objects with a powerful magical history. His pride, his belief in his own superiority, his determination to carve for himself a starting place in magical history; these things suggest to me that Voldemort would have chosen his Horcruxes with some care, favouring objects worthy of the honour.' Another possible reason is that you need a strong personal connection to the items you are binding your soul to. The ring showed his connection to the Gaunts. The Locket, Cup, and Diadem were from Hogwarts' founders, where he spent his school years. Nagini the maledictus Voldemort shared a special bond with. Harry Potter was the person prophesied to be the only one capable of defeating him. Even the accidental Horcrux makes sense. The diary is the only one this is a little hard for this theory, but all it would take it that Voldemort actually used the diary to record his school years. Maybe he recorded important finding like his relation to the Gaunts, his connection to Salazar Slytherin, finding important rooms like the Chamber of Secrets or the Room of Requirement, and so on. Some of you might think that doesn't make sense due to the Diary being blank, but that isn't to hard to explain either. It could have been blank for many reasons, to hid the information it contained, to remove the connection to Voldemort, or maybe the part of Voldemort in the diary needed the ink to communicate, so it could convince people to open the chamber.
@the_latinist19 күн бұрын
We know that Voldemort wanted such a connection to his horcruxes, but Dumbledore attributes that to his personality. I don’t think anything in the books suggests such a connection is necessary for the creation of a horcrux.

Equal parts practicality and hubris. The hubris is obvious: the books make it very clear that Voldemort likes his trophies, and there are no bigger trophies in his eyes than objects that once belonged to the founders of Hogwarts. But there is also a practical aspect in that Voldemort would be able to check on his horcruxes if needed. Doing that with a pebble or grain of sand would be impossible, so while it would make it easier for others to identify them, the same would be true for Voldemort himself. And it’s not like he hid them in easy-to-find locations with no magical protection. I also think that he felt that he felt secure in getting objects from the Founders because he already had one horcrux that was ordinary to the common eye. While I believe the diary was a trophy in the eyes of Voldemort (I always figured it originally belonged to Myrtle), it would seem fairly common to everyone else.

Who could forget a person as fearful to the point that many can't say his name without trembling in fear? Especially when when they would be running the world in the events that he was still alive. For a man of arrogance and narcissism this is a rather modest take. People with narcissism don't think themself as forgettable even after death and much more so for the living. He probably knew that somewhere down the road many would figure out a way to stop him. He did make efforts to make sure that it took a very long time hundreds maybe even thousands of years. I think this mainly stems from the magic in Harry Potter heavily depending upon the individual and their personal interpretations of magic, for example Voldemort kills wayyyy more than like 8 people, but only creates 8 horcruxes? the math don't math, unless it had to be a particularly evil act to split the soul. For example if he was genuinely defending himself against some form of magical bandit, I don't think anyone would consider it "evil" necessarily as it would be more of a self defense situation. But killing an heir of Hogwarts in order to desecrate their family heirloom? pre fuckin evil to me. And I think that's the main aspect, they had to be murders (or simply actions) that Voldemort himself understands to be truly evil in nature, like murdering his father to create the ring. Even though he resented Tom Senior he understood that to murder ones own parent is an evil act in itself, therefore capable of ripping apart a soul even as dark and demented as his.
