The Non-Canon Expert looks at the reasons Yoda and Obi-Wan didn't go to confront the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious together in Revenge of the Sith, explaining why they would instead divide their forces so that Yoda would face Sidious, and Obi-Wan would face Darth Vader, alone.

You are all forgetting that the sequence of events that had led to 4,5 and 6 would not have happened. Its all talk. I would have liked to have seen that they found out about sidius in attack of clones ans then what the council would have done but thats where lucas made, in my opinion, the mistake in limiting the storyline

I'm not convinced Obi-Wan would've been humiliated like the council members who accompanied Mace. He was a better duelist than them in my opinion and Sidious would likely have focused mostly on Yoda. Though if Sidious began using his force powers on him like he did on Yoda, that might've been a problem for Obiwan.

@Pinkaugust you seem to forget Kenobi isn't just a master of the high ground but is THE master of it , that is why he was able to beat maul even when he was on the low ground as even that can be considered high ground from a certain point of view (the other side of the planet for example) thus even Sidious spin would be ineffective against the jedi master.

With the light saber, yes, obi-wan was exceptionaly great, the problem is that his connection to the force was not that great as yoda or palpatine's connection, meaning that palpatine could easily kill him using the force.

Also, dooku tossed him around like a rag doll, and dooku is no where near palpatine's ability with the force, if dooku can do that, what makes you think he stood a chance against palpatine???? Palpatine was also watching that fight closely, so its most likely he picked up on that key flaw about obi-wan, that someone strong with the force like him can break his force wall.

I think you underestimate the prowess of Obi Wan's Soresu fighting style, according to Mace he was the best practitioner of that form of all time, which makes him the most gifted swordsman defensively. He would certainly not have been killed by Sidious as swiftly as the others and would therefore have been helpful to Yoda

Isn't the answer simple? Not only did he fear for Obi-Wan's life, as he would've been extremely out of his depth against Sidious, but someone needed to stop Vader before he grew too powerful for any living Jedi to take on.

Personally, I think the whole explanation is Bantha-Poodoo. The simple fact is, Sidious was not-confident in his battle against Yoda, especially when the very first force-push showed a clear distinction in their powers. He at first tried to flee immediately after that, despite being certain that he had Yoda finished mere moments before. He's afraid of Yoda and his power... Which is why throughout the entire fight, Sheev is practically on the defensive; he's making offensive strikes yes, but in reality, he's moving completely defensively, trying to prevent Yoda from pushing him back. Palpetine had to basically cheat in order to win the fight. Because Yoda's Form 4 Lightsaber technique basically depends on forward momentum and constant movement, Sheev took the fight specifically into an area that would inhibit Yoda's ability to move about; raising the central chair into the Courtroom Chamber of the Senate, where Yoda's ability to move about and evade attacks was hindered. Worse, the film shows that Yoda was outmatching Palpetine as a duelist, because despite these efforts, it was clear he couldn't simply overpower Yoda with his lightsaber and was actually struggling to overcome him. It's why - disappointingly - the already short duel takes an unsatisfying turn, when Palpetine moves onto the stands surrounding the chamber, forcing Yoda to engage on multiple levels. He knows he can't take Yoda in a straight-fight, so he simply resorts to throwing the Senators' Hovercraft at him, trying to catch him off guard. And yet while this is an offensive move, it's being done completely defensively, because he's trying to keep Yoda at a distance. Then when Yoda counters this by returning one of them toward him, he's so completely unprepared for it, that he simply dodges out of the way, and exposes himself for Yoda to close the gap. The Force Lightning at the end was a desperate move for Palpetine, because he knew going for his Lightsaber would be ineffective against Yoda. And yet, despite the energy that Palpetine put into the attack, Yoda was still able to absorb it all and rebound it back at him; effectively I actually think that Yoda's struggle in this scene was actually a feint - he lured Palpetine in, making him think the attack was working, so that he'd double-down on putting in more energy, getting even closer to the nexus, only for Yoda to prepare to release the attack back at him. Hell, if anything Yoda's "defeat" in this scene doesn't feel so much like a loss as more it does a forfeit. It seems like it would be a simple matter for Yoda to recover his lightsaber and return to the fight. Hell, the Emperor is in a precarious situation, hanging for his life above you right now; expose and vulnerable. Grab your lightsaber and throw it at him! But he doesn't... All I'm saying is, the direction of the scene clearly shows that Yoda is in the advantage during the battle, and yet, can't do anything to contradict the Original Trilogy.

This ironically is an answer to another question I've come across: What if Ahsoka and Obi-Wan fought Anakin? For the same reasons as here, that's a very bad idea. The only reason Obi-Wan was able to do as well as he did was due to his understanding of Anakin's tactics, methodology, style, mindset and most importantly, there were no external factors interfering with the fight. There was just him, Anakin and environment, and he could easily focus on just those two to eventually take him down. Throwing in someone far less capable than him would potentially spell disaster for Obi-Wan and whoever was fighting with him. Obi-Wan would now have to expend precious energy to protect his partner, preventing him from taking the necessary risks needed to defeat Anakin in combat. In short, Obi-Wan cannot go all out on him, and that will mean Obi-Wan's death.

One of the best ways to defeat or at least block Darth Sidious was to harm his plans for Darth Vader (Anakin). In this sense, Yoda was holding action against Sidious while Obi-wan dealt with Vader. Also why Sidious rushed off to help Vader. When Yoda said he failed, not sure if this meant failure to kill Vader.

Yoda knew Obi-Wan could take down Anakin because he trained him and the fact that Sidious would only use Obi-Wan as a target to put Yoda off guard just like what Dooku did. Keeping Obi-Wan away gives Yoda a chance to cut lose. The only reason why Count Dooku survived at Geonosis was because he dropped a piller on both Anakin and Obi-Wan's head.

I’ve always seen the battle between Yoda and Sidious as dead even. Yoda was able to repel everything Palpatine threw at him. He clearly could have kept fighting, but sensing a draw and knowing he was now in enemy territory, the best decision was to exit the scene. The wise choice (perhaps the only choice) was to play the long game.

I am willing to bet that Obi-wan would have been a hindrance to Yoda if they had both confronted Sidious. For one thing, they both had a different light saber combat forms that they defaulted to during a duel. Yoda’s small stature meant he would have to duel completely differently than Obi-wan. To make up his size almost all of Yoda’s fights have involved some assistance from the force. It would have left Obi-wan with little to no possibility put in a strike of his own.

In the ROTS novelization, Obi Wan was proclaimed by Mace Windu to be THE greatest master of form III lightsaber combat in the Order and potentially in the entire history of the Order. This proclamation came as part of Mace's contention that Kenobi was the best-equipped Jedi in the Order to defeat Grievous. Kenobi's defensive mastery sets himapart from Kolar, Tiin, and Fisto, none of whom were Soresu specialists, let alone masters of the form. Sidious may have had a VERY difficult time breaking through Kenobi's defenses, just as Grievous did on Utapau and just as Vader did on Mustafar... with both of them ultimately failing to do so. Let's not forget that Vader had just defeated the Order's Battlemaster, Cin Drallig, during his march on the Temple. Drallig was arguably at least as skilled as, if not more skilled than, any of the three masters insta-killed by Sidious. And Kenobi was able to hold off Vader's onslaught on Mustafar, eventually outwitting and defeating him. If Kenobi can handle Vader, who George Lucas suggested in an interview could have held his own against Sidious during ROTS, then I think he definitely fares better against Sidious than most people are giving him credit for, especially when accompanied by Yoda.

You’re asking the wrong question my friend. What you should be asking, is why didn’t Yoda go with Obi to ensure Vader’s death. As we all know, Vader survived, making Obi’s effort a failed one. Yoda would have made the hard decision to give Vader the final death blow and not turn his back as Obi did. Remember, Obi FAILED his mission. In your video, you use the logic that Obi had a better chance to defeat Vader...he simply did not defeat Vader. I’d argue Obi made Vader stronger. Had they truly destroyed Vader it would have tilted Palpatine. With palpatine’s apprentice gone it would set his plans back significantly and it might have sent Palpatine into a fit of uncontrollable rage. This would allow Yoda and Obi a solid chance to pick him apart while he was consumed by defeat. They could tell Palpatine the news as they confronted him. Ultimately, the wise Yoda’s plan was no bueno and resulted in years of needless pain for the Galaxy.

In our Canon, Sidious sensed "Lord Vader was in danger." I am SURE Sidious would have felt it too (even stronger?) had Kenobi AND Yoda gone to him😂. That said, if they polished Vader off...would the Sith master be unhinged? Yes, but not mentally/emotionally so. He'd be irate, and (fear)>anger>hate>suffering. Yoda and Kenobi would have had an all-out brawl on their hands!

@@michaeltrumph121 And if Obi Wan had ended up there by chance, I have no doubt both Yoda and Obi Wan would have seen the bigger picture and Obi Wan at the very least would have forced that exact result, willingly sacrificing himself. Yoda would realize that it was the only way to end the Sith and gone along with it. But given the choice, Yoda never would have knowingly sent a fellow Jedi to their death if he thought there was another way.

I think that the best thing they could have done was to go together face Vader on Mustafar, who was less powerful and experienced than Palpatine/Sidious, although the newly-appointed emperor would have no distractions and would quickly fly away from Coruscant and go to Mustafar, I think that the two Jedi masters would be able to beat the arrogant Sith apprentice just before Palpatine would arrive, but then Obi-Wan wouldn't want that his former Padawan die, so I think Yoda should help to redeem Skywalker. When when Palpatine arrives, Anakin (pretending he was still Vader) should trick him and allow Yoda and Obi-Wan to kill him or Anakin himself should kill Sidious by surprise. Well, but George Lucas had already done the original trilogy, so he could no longer do something that would wipe out the OT events.

Saber-wise, I believe that Obi-Wan could have held his own against Darth Syphilis, had he teamed up with Yoda. Force-wise, though, I can understand Yoda's concern. After seein' what Dooku did to Obi-Wan aboard the Invisible Hand, ol' Syphilis would have flung Obi-Wan around like a freakin' rag doll!

First, just wanna say I love your videos. Second, I’m still a bit confused as to why Yoda believed he could not beat Sidious once his duel began. We know he wanted to keep Sidious close to keep the fight going with lightsabers as he believed that was his best chance. But I don’t see how Yoda thought he would necessarily lose once they began dueling. Just looking for some clarification bc I always thought Yoda believed he could win so long as he kept Sidious close and kept the fight a duel of sabers rather than at a distance using just force powers.

No joke. You can also see the major edits to palpatine a face when he is dueling mace.

If you think about it Windu was probably the strongest Jedi when fighting the sith because of his ability to channel the dark side. Hence why he defeated Sidious. However against a Jedi he would be second best to Yoda as his lightsaber fighting will not be as strong when going against someone from the light side.

It is only upon his return that Luke finds Yoda sick and dying. Even just being there could have made a difference. He could have died as a Jedi instead of wasting away. I think the good guys would win in this scenario cuz with Obi-Wan not around on Mustafar, Padmé would've brought Anakin back to the light, and he would no longer be Vader. Not to mention, Obi-Wan is second to none when it comes to all-out defense, thanks to his mastery of Soresu, so even if, heaven forbid, he gets killed, he would've softened Palpatine enough for Yoda to maybe have a better chance of killing him.

Yoda Vs Sidious duel was a draw. Besides Yoda was at a disadvantage, he was not destined to destroy the Sith, but Anakin the Chosen one. Although and quite rightly under the circumstances Yoda doubted Anakin was the actual Messiah, due to his betrayal. How could Yoda and Kenobi assume Mace failed? Did they not perceive Anakin may have aided Sidious in defeating Mace? How Anakin fell to the Dark side at the exact same time as Sidious revealed himself? What was the catalyst that pushed Anakin to the Dark side?

If they would have both went to take out Vader they would need to take care of him fast. If they were successful I think Sidious would have went into hiding and hope they would get taken out by the army he had built. I think the bigger mistake is not taking the twins to a safe location and training both of them together and when the time comes have 4 insanely powerful Jedi to go against the Sith.

Probably because they weren’t sure he was even connected with a Sith Lord, much less *being* one, and by the time they had more info, they were planets apart and couldn’t easily reconvene. Had they known *sooner* as opposed to later, Yoda would have been the one to lead the charge.

Especially since obi wan dispatched of Anakin. The only reason he faces trouble with Dooku is because Dookus style was a definitive counter to obi wans

If that were the case Yoda and Obi would still be able to tag team him: if obi had attacked palpatine right after the duel with Yoda he could have won. Yoda quite often underestimated the abilities of other Jedi and obviously of his enemies as well. Think of his arrogance towards Dooku and Sidious, only to fail in stopping both. I’m convinced that he is wrong and Obi-Wan could’ve been the difference in the fight with Sidious and would’ve placed Yoda and Obi-Wan in the perfect position to restore the galactic senate under the council and take control of the clone army while on Coruscant.

Not to mention Obi-Wan was capable of killing one Sith Lord and left the other for dead. Could’ve easily had two Sith under his belt at the end of the trilogy if he chose to ensure Anakins death. He also killed Grevious who canonically is actually noted as an incredible duelist in his own right. There is also a serious underestimation of Anakins skills here because although he may not be quite as powerful as Sidious or Yoda at that point, it is not difficult to argue he could’ve held his own in a duel with either of these masters and by extension Obi-Wan as well. Especially considering that at this point Anakin is fully tapping into his emotions when dueling and drawing much more power through them. And yet Obi-Wan managed to best him. I’m just saying.

Probably because Yoda assumed that Obi-Wan would do his duty and kill Anakin/Vader. But we all know how that turned out. Had Yoda been there, he would have either not hesitated to kill him, or would have argued with Obi-Wan about whether they should or not. But either way, I think Sidious would have been alerted to them both being with his apprentice immediately, and the two of them again the two Jedi would almost certainly end in a loss for the latter.
