I think it would be interesting taking this concept, and making an advice video on how to lose weight, when you are obese. I let myself get to 228, and I was miserable. I do agree that dieting sucks. However, when I lost 40 pounds I never felt better, physically. I have gained and lost the same 15 pounds multiple times though, showing that dieting doesn’t really work for a lot of people. I think a video on how to get to a healthy weight would be so helpful!

Allina I was thinking the same.
@W0lfel7 жыл бұрын
Allina there is no such thing as getting to a healthy weight, there is health at every size! Just because someone is of a larger body size does not necessarily mean they are "obese". Everyone can be healthy at any size, and the number on the scale does not measure health. Diet culture and the social norm has told us that we have to look a certain way and it is very flawed and unrealistic. As Becca says " we need to start loving our bodies no matter what size they are!" I encourage you to read the book Healthy At Every Size by Dr. Linda Bacon!

OMG I literally almost cried seeing this video. I started watching my consumption when I was overweight, but when i was healthy I thought it wasn’t good enough. What started as a healthy patern turned into disorded eating what then spiralled out of control to a full out eating disorder (also because this obsession helped me to deal with other problems in my life). I’m in recovery right now but struggle with following my body and its cues, so this video struck a cord for me. Thank you!

How do you know if your in your happy range? My husband and I have gained a bit of weight since we got married 3 years ago. How can we lose weight, but not do drastic diets? We've been keeping a food journal to keep ourselves accountable. We had been eating a lot of crappy foods in secret, so this way we see how much food we're eating and go over it with each other at the end of the day. We're not cutting anything out, just thinking twice about that candy bar while grocery shopping. What do you think? Any tips on making lifestyle changes that we can maintain forever? We're not morbidly obese, I have about 15 lbs and he has 35. Love your videos!

Totally agree with Becca's video. I got sucked in to the idea of dieting to look 'better' unfortunately i lost too much weight, and my period too, and after trying to gain weight back and get healthy, my body kinda went into survival mode because i had deprived it and i developed BED... :( it's been tough and a cycle you get stuck in and it only gets worse, so girls (or even boys) dieting can cause many food issues. Thankfully after many months i found and read a book called Brain over Binge and it has helped me to understand my situation and i'm finally starting to recover :) thanks so much for this video Becca, its a message that needs to be spread! Most women in their 50s lose their youth physique due to childbearing, illnesses, or natural aging processes. I’m one year away from turning 50, and my body is changing. There is a realistic mental shift that is necessary for living a healthy lifestyle at this age. But as with any age, food is never the enemy. We are all human and face the same challenges of control of our eating. I have never believed in diets, as Becca described, nor followed diet trends. Instead, I believe that each of us must make an assessment of our own bodies and eat what fuels the body for living. Processed foods and fast foods are by far the nutrition that I avoid, if I can. Thank you Becca for this video. I agree that we are saturated with wrong information about nutrition. Is it all about money? Possibly. I hope your viewers learn about nutrition from your videos. What you say is so true! I have a friend who decided to go on a diet about 8 years ago and she did manage to lose the weight and she’s really slim now... but she’s become completely obsessed with how slim she looks and she developed really bad eating disorders. Whenever we go out to eat, she will prevent herself from eating supposedly “too much” of her meal, even if she’s still hungry. It’s so sad and frustrating at the same time!

Emma Odren A diet is temporary. A lifestyle change is permanent, and what people need to do to get the extra weight off and not gain it back when the "diet" is over. After 15 years of disordered eating, I finally figured out that eating real, whole foods and not processed junk is the way to be healthy, not obsessing over counting calories or carbs or whatever else. I started my lifestyle change to what most would call "clean eating" at the beginning of the year and have lost 17 lbs so far without a lick of exercise. Weight loss happens in the kitchen, fitness in the gym. You can't out-exercise bad eating habits. I eat meat, veggies, fruits, nuts, some full fat dairy, and the occasional treat of a piece of dark chocolate. I don't eat foods with added sugar or anything processed 99% of the time. I also don't eat grains, but only because I'm diabetic and they spike my blood sugar. I feel better than I ever have in my life, and I know I will never go back to the way I ate before.

Heres something that helped me, Ive been reasearching about this and the thing is food isnt the enemy we can eat what we want its just the point of view of food we all have. Why not eat the foods our bodys desire with no judgement of eating it what so ever? You want cake, Go for it. Intuitively choose what u wanna eat. One meal doesnt make u fat, We shouldnt be so dependent on numbers but how we feel.

Fat doesn't just "sit there". It has numerous hormonal and metabolic responsibilities. It's not dead tissue. Could you instead give us tips on how to build our metabolisms (aka: build more muscle, eat more food), or how to increase leptin levels while decreasing ghrelin levels. I really don't understand your stance here. I am all for body positivity, and decreasing body dysmorphia, but you can't honestly say that you would look at a client who is 5'3" and 250+ lbs and not at least think to recommend weight loss to better all aspects of their health. If I "listened" to my body, it would tell me to eat sugar all day long because of the dopamine release that causes. I still love all of your other videos, but if you want to go science, go full science.

A lot people here at asking how to get to their happy weight. I think if one truly ate intuitively and honored rule #10 of intuitive eating (self-care and gentle nutrition), you’re weight will take care of itself. You are not eating intuitively if you are still thinking about weight loss. Intuitive eating is not a diet.

Is there any way for people who actually need to lose weight to do so without losing muscle. Or is that just unavoidable?
@RosesareRed387 жыл бұрын
ccap3211 yes there is! Eat 0.8-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight to preserve muscle. If you're really overweight then only use your lean body mass as an indicator. Do strength training along with that combined with cardio. It's really that simple. This is what I'm doing. Also figure out your body type. Are you an ectomorph, mesomorph or endomorph?
@ccap32117 жыл бұрын
RosesareRed38 thanks thats really helpful! I find it difficult to differentiate between whether I’m an endomorph or a mesomorph that could lose a few pounds. Lol
@RosesareRed387 жыл бұрын
ccap3211 it's okay 🙂 so if you're a mesomorph you have bigger shoulders and smaller hips. If you're an endomorph you have smaller shoulders and wider hips, so you're more curvy. Think of Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez and scarlet johansen as endomorphs and Hally Berry, Jennifer garner, kate winslet as mesomorphs. You can also be a combination of both. How well do you handle carbs?
@RosesareRed387 жыл бұрын
Ashley Jongepier that's true to an extent but some body types (mesomorphs) preserve muscle mass much better than the other types. Endomorphs need more cardio to burn the fat and a lower carb diet. Ectomorphs actually don't do well will calorie deficits so should stick to smaller ones if at all. We all lose fat differently.
@Devonxoxoable6 жыл бұрын
you will loss a bit of muscle mass, it is unavoidable when losing weight. However, you can minimize it by doing a couple things. Eat enough protein, don't have too large of a deficit, and make sure you are lifting weights.

It's a real shame to hear this kind of misinformation, especially coming from a registered dietician. The human body is very complex at the minor level, but at the gross level, if you eat more calories than you burn, you will store the energy as adipose or muscle and gain weight. If you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight. Weight loss is not EASY, but it is SIMPLE. Saying that 95% of diets fail is incredibly misleading - 95% of PEOPLE fail, because it's hard! People have low willpower, people underestimate how much they eat, people give up. But if ANY person, barring extreme medical conditions, consumes fewer calories than they burn, they WILL lose weight. You think your message is empowering but it's the complete opposite. It's defeatist and you are telling people there is no point in attempting a healthier lifestyle because they are destined to fail, and I think it's awful. To anyone reading this looking to lose weight: you CAN do it, it IS possible, do not believe this bullshit about 'set points' and whatever else garbage people are spreading on the internet to make weight loss seem unattainable. Addressing a few incorrect/misinformed points in this video: - Becca's comment about muscle breakdown is ill-informed. If you are overweight and cut calories, you will burn fat predominately. You will lose a slight amount of muscle along with the fat, but if you have adequate protein intake and engage in exercise you will be able to preserve muscle just fine. It's true that muscle mass raises metabolism, but it's only a slight effect. Losing extra fat is far more beneficial for your health than preserving a tiny bit of muscle mass you would lose along with the fat. - Your weight loss WILL level off after a while of reducing calories, because your body no longer requires as many calories to function, because you will be smaller! Recalculate as you may need to be eating less calories. Here is a calculator you can use to figure out how many calories you burn each day on average: tdeecalculator.net/ If trying to lose weight, reduce the calories you consume by 500 under that number for an average weight loss of 1lb/week. Good luck to anyone wanting to lose weight for their health! I wish you health and happiness ❤

I think you missed one of the big messages of this video in that "diet culture" is toxic and made society obsessed about fitting a certain mold of what healthy "should be" and going to extreme starvation and stupid tactics to lose weight and look like some cookie cutter celebrity.
@babeheffron7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's completely fair enough, and I do agree with that. The point I was making is just that that's not necessary for healthy weight loss, and it's perfectly achievable without starvation diets or any crazy or dangerous stuff. I guess I just think it's irresponsible to be telling people essentially that weight loss is dangerous or impossible when we're deep in an obesity epidemic.
@Optomystyc7 жыл бұрын
This is what I was looking for. Thank you. I think Becca's intentions are good, but I would disagree with some of her points. I would further add that there has been some research to support that people can readjust their "set point". This is achievable by lowering your weight slowly, and maintaining that lower weight before trying to lose more. This is just one body of research, however. Everyone is different.
@tarynpulver92517 жыл бұрын
I agree that this video could be a little more detailed, but having watched a lot of her videos I know that she is comparing "diets" to a lifestyle change. This video isn't about weight loss, it's about diets. (She does have a video on weight loss.) When she talks about diets she talks about doing ketosis or going vegan or paleo strictly for weight loss or body shape manipulation. She's talking about cutting things out and being restrictive. Obviously if someone is overweight, they need to lose some weight for health reasons (I've been there). I don't think shes saying they shouldn't lose weight. She's saying don't go on a "diet." I know for a fact she would advocate for realistic, maintainable lifestyle changes. It's just temporary diet rules vs. lifelong lifestyle changes. And I know she didn't say it in this video, but that's what she means.
