What do you think about intermittent fasting? How fast does the body slow down the metabolism due to not eating? Like how long does it take for our body to adapt?

Me too, I’d like to know this. There’s also information out there than women shouldn’t intermittent fast for more than a couple of days a week and go no longer than 14 hours without food. What is a dietitian’s view on this?

Just wanted to say that it is SO REFRESHING to have RDs like you who are preaching true health! Feeling good, eating to care for your body, and moving to feel good are so very important. It is due to people like you that I have regained my sanity. I have come to appreciate what my body can do for me. Through respecting and listening to my body I have found enjoyment in food and love in exercise again. Thank you so much for spreading the good word! As someone who is on track to become a MD I will take this information with me and to my patients one day. Keep doing what you do ❤️ we are all grateful

Becca your videos just make me feel good about food. I love the comment that our bodies will fluctuate. That seems like such common sense but we have these expectations of always fitting into the same pants or being the same size. Other videos talking about what to eat, diet rules, restriction, just leave me with anxiety. Yours make me feel like a big sigh of relief. Love your message. You totally deserve 100k followers.♡♡♡

What do you think is the best way to lose body fat without slowing down your metabolism? Thanks!
@fusiion29
@fusiion29 6 жыл бұрын
Its not completely possible to not have metabolism slow down when losing fat as your body adapts to a lower calorie intake. Some studies suggest that the best sustainable fat lose should be down with a small deficit with breaks taken in between where you eat at your maintenance calories. For example, Have a 250-500 calorie deficit for 2 weeks, then eat at maintenance for two weeks and go back and forth between the two. It may be a good idea to have shorter periods of deficits in between longer periods at maintenance.
@fusiion29

Higher protein intakes are also recommended during periods of caloric deficits

sustainable weight loss takes time. Anything that promises quick results is usually bogus and ineffective in keeping weight off long term. Pair good eating habits with consistent resistance training, and the results are sure to come
@ccap3211

fusiion29 that’s so hard though. Seeing results is what keeps people motivated and if results are slow to come people typically give up because they haven’t seen any changes.

What a fabulous video. Really enjoyed it. You explained something scientific very well to the lay person, I can tell you’re super passionate about your job. I watched because I’m in my healthy range yet I’m about to embark on a slow ‘bulk’ of upping my calories to build more muscle in the gym. I will then cut them down steadily to lean out, both of which won’t be long term as I believe in switching things up every 10-12 weeks to meet my fitness goals. This was a ‘going back to basics’ video for me to get inspiration and be reminded of the fact that we are indeed different and everyone is to celebrated in their own way. Do you workout and eat to maintain your shape Becca or have you ever experimented with gaining muscle/leaning down?

Becca I always love your videos, they’re so interesting! I love what you say but I have a question. So, I know that we all have a set point our body wants to be at, and that we should accept our body just the way it is, but at the same time, doctors are constantly telling us that overweight people are at higher risks for diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. So my question is, shouldn’t some people try to lose weight for health reasons? Not hating, I’ve just been wondering about this issue lately and would love to have the opinion of a RD who doesn’t approve of diet culture.
@ericaerdahl1469
@ericaerdahl1469 6 жыл бұрын
In case Becca doesn’t answer, I will be an RDN in a year and have some input to your question. Doctors are extremely knowledgeable about diagnosing and prescribing treatment for disease. However, they do not have extensive training and knowledge in preventative nutrition. Studies have also shown an incredible weight bias among physicians. While there is truth and evidence behind disease being related to overweight and obesity in many cases, it is extremely problematic to ever assume that someone is unhealthy based on weight alone and even more problematic to loosely advise someone to lose weight without proper support and nutrition education. Doctors are not evil people, but rather, the system the exist within is just messy. Fortunately, there are rising numbers of Dietitians joining the workforce who hopefully will work to dispel the myths regarding nutrition and dieting!
@CrystalLynn815
@CrystalLynn815 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the individual. Obese people are at a higher risk, but people who are “skinny fat” can be as well. Doctors usually won’t say anything to people in the latter category, because they don’t look big. For me personally, heart disease runs in my family. I’ve noticed if I get a lipid test when I’m eating healthier fats like extra virgin olive oil, avocado and salmon, it will be optimal. When I’m eating a lot of processed foods and refined oils, my lipid tests will worsen to suboptimal. Intuitively, processed foods can taste better, are faster, more convenient and sometimes even digest better than whole unprocessed foods. I really have to use my knowledge of my individual health to make better food choices. Frankly, if I only ate based on intuitive feel, I wouldn’t make the best choices for my health.
@ericaerdahl1469
@ericaerdahl1469 6 жыл бұрын
CrystalLynn815 Intuitive eating has nothing to do with only eating what tastes and sounds good all the time. In fact, it highly encourages making nutritious food choices that nourish our bodies most of the time. The intuitive part has much more to do with the timing of eating and amount of food eaten. It’s about listening to hunger and satiety cues and really tuning in to food and how it tastes and makes you feel. Unlike dieting though, intuitive eating leaves room for ALL foods. If you want to eat an extra large slice of cake, intuitive eating say “yes, you should!”. Because normal eating consists of eating both what is nutrient dense and healthful and nutrient poor and unhealthy some of the time.

Erica Erdahl Perfect answer!
@CrystalLynn815
@CrystalLynn815 6 жыл бұрын
Erica Erdahl Diet is simply the kinds of food that a person eats. So one could say there’s a spectrum with disordered, highly restrictive eating on one end and immediate pleasure seeking eating on the other end. You could say intuitive eating is somewhere in the middle where you’re health conscious but still allow the freedom to indulge. That’s not “anti-diet.” It’s a method of food intake, therefore it IS a diet. It’s just the age-old “eat a balanced diet” being rebranded into something trendy.

Just because your on a diet doesn’t mean your starving yourself.... maybe for someone it does, but I just replace the bad foods I was eating with healthy foods when I’m hungry. This ”diet” of mine is turning into a lifestyle because I am so happy eating this way and taking care of it. I’m nowhere near starving myself.

Josefine Funch Your metabolism doesn’t slow down permanently! She just meant that when you come out of your caloric deficit, it could be slower, and then you have to work to build your muscle back up and speed your metabolism back up, just to be at the point you were when you started. Take care of your body and it will work properly, no need to worry! :)
@dvdmon

I'm not sure how much evidence we have that our metabolisms significantly slow down based on losing weight. Yes, if you are in a severe caloric deficit and you are actually starving, then your body intentionally does things to decrease caloric expenditure (moving less), but in terms of utilizing the calories you are eating, I don't think you get more or less calories out of the same food, which is what it sounds like you are inferring. I'm surprised you don't talk here about set points, since that seems to be more indicated by the evidence for why/how weight loss stops on calorie-restrictive diets. IE, a 180 lb body needs 2,242 calories to maintain that, but you eat 1,992 calries to get a 250 calorie/day or 1750 calorie/week deficit, you'll lose weight initially, but by the time you are 140 lbs, those same 1992 calories will only be enough to maintain that weight, so unless you further reduce calories, you will stop losing. I'm not suggesting calorie counting/restriction is a good method of weight loss either. I agree that eating a good balance of foods and staying away from foods that are ultra-processed (and thus ultra-addictive), as well as simply limiting foods that are calorie-dense (IE very high in fat) while increasing foods that are high in fiber will naturally keep your caloric consumption in check...

Any suggestions on how you can get your body out of starvation mode? I was diagnosed with gastroparesis (not diabetic) a few years ago and lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks because I couldn’t eat and hit a super low weight since I was always a healthy weight prior to that. Now that it’s under control and I can eat, I’m wayyyy over my pre illness weight and just keep gaining no matter what I try. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

So what do you advise for losing weight without a calorie deficit then? Some people, like me, actually do need to lose weight, as you know. I do believe in set point theory and am not looking to be skinny, I already do what you said and eat small portions of clean and healthy foods (mainly veg and protein) and exercise (spinning, 5ks etc). But still. It’s not healthy for me to be 224 pounds which I am currently.

We need to stop looking at other people's bodies and wanting to be like them. I hate it when you see women pulling up their shirt and showing their 6 pack. It is so unachievable for most of us and just causes so much anxiety for us. We don't need to look like somebody else. As you said, feed our bodies with real food, nourish it, move, even if it is walking for 20 minutes a day, because for me that is all I can do. Great video

As some one who is slightly chubby and a lot of my clothes don't fit me anymore because I stopped counting calories/macros for a year and GAINED fat I find this video offensive. I didn't like your previous video either. Seriously considering unsubscribing. As some one who battles to control their weight I find this offensive. As some one who's thighs rub together when they gain even a few extra kilos, I'm sorry but this video is enraging! Some people can eat healthy and be okay with it, but other people need to diet okay? I used to be a UK size 8 and now I'm a size 12. I think in America that's a size 4 and now I'm a size 8. And no, dieting doesn't cause starvation mode! You wanna see starvation mode? Go to Africa or India or Haiti. That's what real starvation mode is. So sick of this word being thrown around so casually.
@tarynpulver9251
@tarynpulver9251 6 жыл бұрын
RosesareRed38 She doesn’t believe in counting macros because it’s not maintainable for life (which is why you stopped). That’s a perfect example of why diets don’t work! You don’t have to rely on a diet, just start experimenting in the kitchen, find some healthy recipes you enjoy and can eat forever! I used to be a size 12 and now I’m a 4 (US) and I just got here by finding vegetables I love and eating them non stop! And finally finding exercise I enjoy. You deserve to be happy! Diets are all about unhappiness - being unhappy with your body - doing things that make you unhappy as if in the end it will make you happy! That doesn’t make any sense! Find healthy foods that fuel your body that you ENJOY eating. Keep watching Becca’s videos because she has LOADS of information on how our bodies work - and knowledge is power! When you learn how your body is supposed to work, you will be more aware of what you’re eating and how it will affect you. You’ll also know what you need to incorporate more of. You can do this! You don’t need a point system! Just BE happy - don’t get happy. Enjoy life, and food, and movement. Your body will work with you, not against you!

Taryn Johnson I'm already content with where i am thank you. Yes I know I won't be counting calories for the rest of my life, but for now, whilst I get the hang of losing weight I need to. Infact I never used to count calories or macros until recently and it's been life changing to see how much I was eating and how I need to meet my daily protein requirements. I went on holiday and didn't count calories for three weeks, but focused more on protein and didn't lose any muscle. I have a body analyser scale to prove this. I find calorie counting has helped me. Before that I couldn't seem to change my body. I only have 27lbs to lose and at 5' 4" I shouldn't weigh this much it makes my legs heavy. Losing weight is more about how it makes me feel, less about looks (and because I need to fit back into my clothes before they rot away). I find Beccas anti dieting rants to be double standards because she's so slim herself! Also, I already eat healthy, I'm known as the health guru in my family so yeah I get plenty of veggies, healthy fats, complex carbs, protein etc.
