Batuu was a mistake from the start with being locked in the Sequel Trilogy and a planet with no previous history for Star Wars and fans. Star Wars land should’ve been different at each resort. Disneyland gets Tatooine with California having a sunny dry climate, Disney World gets Endor with it already having shield bunker for Star Tours, and Paris gets Naboo which is something distinctly European.
@patrickmuhlbeyer926220 күн бұрын
Great idea, but i would have loved Endor in Paris. Mainly because endor was alway the destination in classic star tours and you could do great story telling with „we finally arrived on endor“. I love star tours, but in never fit the paris discovery land. Moving it to the other park and making it the entrance to the land would have been next level theming. Imagine, riding star tours with new films, landing on endor, leaving the vehicle and exiting into the endor land. Just amazing.

That is what the original plan was by the imagineers, but Mathy called Iger to pushed for sequel trilogy, and Iger wanted to save money as well avoid paying George as many royalties as possible. While he did sell Star Wars to Disney, they still have to pay him whenever they use any of his ideas. So the sequel trilogy and the land avoid using his characters and ideas as much as possible. That's a reason why the Millennium Falcom is slightly different. By being different enough, they can avoid layinf him.

There might be another reason. Disney made a contract with the French state to invest a certain amount of money. With the development of this land in Paris (instead of Animal Kingdom), Disney can pay themselves for research and development and then us the finished land in other Disney Parks - while still abiding to their contract with France.

I may be wrong, but isn't imagineering normally outsourced to the parent company and therefore not part of the investment in france?
@themainstreetnews20 күн бұрын
Disneyland Paris acts in a different way than any other resort. It’s 100% owned by TWDC (just like WDW and DLR) but it pays licensing, operational and other types of fees to the parent company. Walt Disney Imagineering Paris is also a subsidiary of Euro Disney SCA and the resort pays for the costs to do with that company. From 2020 to 2022 it was the most the company spent in WDIP, over 112M€! Why do they do it like this? Well, it could be to pay less taxes to the government. The downside of this is the resort appears to be underperforming, when it very clearly is isn’t!

Construction for a third park was supposed to start in 2017. 3. In 2010, a contract extension was signed. This is a great idea. A lot of SWGE budget was spent on the environmental rock work and building that, while beautifully executed, fails to resonate with many longtime SW fans because it's unfamiliar. While Coruscant doesn't resonate with me as well as original trilogy locations, it's at least "a thing" and could be cost effectively created inside a show building, as you describe. From there, an attraction could transport you to wherever is needed (for example Rise of the Rebels (see what I did, dropping sequel trilogy tie-in?) could start from a Rebel hideout in the back alleys on Coruscant. Also, saving money on rock work and buildings could allow for a larger (or two) cantinas/nightclubs -- correcting a SWGE failing.

I think that the lion king land was a cost saving measure. I mean it is mostly rockworks. I expect a log flume ride with a retelling of the original movie. So far it seems that Disney is playing it safe. From a business point this land makes perfect sense. But to impress me I want either a very well themed indoor section or something that revolutionises the ride system. Disney is the leader in the industry and from a leader I have high expectations. I think that no one should be suprised that star wars land got cancelled. Galaxy edge wasn't a success. Disney invested a lot in this land but the attendence stayed roughly the same in the american parks. In Paris this land would be even perform less well. Galaxy edge is basicly a mall, but we europeans tend to spent less on merchandise than the average american. Also the interest in star wars is in a all time low. The acolyte got cancelled and Ubisoft star wars game is also underperforming. Currently I see no argument for another Galaxy edge.
@gregr372020 күн бұрын
How do you expect Disney to revolutionize a log flume ride?
@kalzium885720 күн бұрын
@gregr3720 Disney has chosen a log flume for a new ride. Disney as the leader in the industry needs to come up with something new. Something exciting. Something that pushes this ridesystem forward. Disney was once a great innovator. If Disney builds another Splash mountain clone with a lion king theme, I would be a bit dissappointed. I mean we have already seen turn tables and backward drops. Some parks are even using a vertical lift instead of a conveyer belt. I am not expecting much but a new technical gimmick would be nice.
@themainstreetnews20 күн бұрын
It wasn’t a cost saving measure for one simple reason: while Star Wars was going to be an expensive build (rise being one of the most expensive rides ever) it was a clone, there was no R&D involved. Now, Disney has needed to completely design a new land from scratch including their first flume of this type, which is rumoured to be the same system as Chiapas + all the animatronics and more.

@@themainstreetnews no R&D for RotR, because it is clone? The unique challenge at the Parisian resort is that it is bilingual. The Star Wars areas in the US parks have not been successful in terms of attracting extra guests. The same for retail sales or foot traffic. All this is due to the change to have these lands take place during the Disney trilogy, not the original trilogy.
@ChienaAvtzon21 күн бұрын
It is more than that. Disney made a mistake building exact clones on both coasts, and allowing the Imagineers to do whatever they wanted. Galaxy’s Edge is not “friendly” to casual parkgoers, as it relies too heavily on LARPing. It needed to be set in a fluid timeline, rather than be frozen and rigid. Also, one of the rides is essentially just a B-17 flight simulator.
@conigliostressato21 күн бұрын
@@ungabungababy i think the biggest mistake (among many) was creating a new “amalgam” location to set the land in. As a French, they only explanation is MONEY. Galaxy edge is very expensive to build, we all know that. Dlp can’t build millenium falcon because of all européen language so they should have build Rise of the resistance. But rise cost 500 000 000 dollars 😅 and the complete studio expansion cost 2 000 000 000. Rise is just too expensive. Lion king will be a cheap land, 1 ride ( who is already in every park ),easy to build and cheap -> splash montain lion king. Without universal in Europe, there is no competition to Disneyland Paris, so they can continue to keep adding cheap land just to maintain guest. Ex : Avengers campus, spider man is one of the newest cheapest attraction of all time, Fligh force is just the same ride as rock n roller, with bad theming inside. The only expensive things here is Iron man animatronics. Frozen land 1 attraction, who is already in Epcot -> easy to build, cheap because it’s not new, and reliable. I beg universal to come in Britain soon. It will shake DLP, and just like in Orlando or Florida, they will need to invest more and better for compete. And even with R&D for splash montain lion king, the cost is still far behind the cost of Rise. Maybe I am wrong, but as a ancient cast member of DLP, choice here are always made because of money, and flight force is the BEST exemple of that. (every cast member knew that flight lack of theming will be a big disappointment among the guest, and we all knew that was because of money)

“Rise of the Resistance” cost $250mil. The $500mil was due to Disney building two of them. “The Lion King” is not a Splash Mountain clone, and the show building is proof. Indeed, these will have two different types of guest. It's like saying that Splash Mountain shouldn't have been built because of Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom. However, I do understand your point that there needs to be more ride types in the park but if we take a step back, there isn't any boat ride in Studios yet while there are 2 coasters (3 if you count RC), 2 drop towers, 3 flat rides, one interactive shooter, one trackless and whatever Road Trip is.
@kevinbhieey918820 күн бұрын
I think another reason for the change comes down to capacity. The park has only one truly high-capacity ride: Ratatouille (about 2200 riders per hour). The Tower of Terror and Flight Force are both about 1600 people per hour. The Road Trip thing is probably really high, but it also never fills up so it doesn't matter. After that, things get really bad. Spider-Man is estimated to be about 1000 per hour. And I think everything else is under 1000 per hour, which is what happens when most of your rides are tarted-up carnival rides. Frozen Ever After isn't going to help much as it's also about 1000 per hour. (At first, Tokyo DisneySea refused to build it thanks to its horrible throughput. That's why their version is not a clone of the Epcot original.) Maybe this doesn't sound important for an unpopular park, but it averages about 15,000 guests a day. Open about 12 hours a day, that means about 12,000 people will get to ride Frozen Ever After when it opens. That number is NOT equal to 15,000. And 15,000 is the AVERAGE. In summer it gets way more people than that. Maximum capacity is 24,000, so only 50% of the people visiting on a busy summer day will be able to ride the new attraction. That's what happened to Rise of the Resistance. While allegedly able to hit 1700ish riders per hour, constant problems meant the ride was barely doing 1000. It was already a questionable choice as Disneyland can hold 85,000 people, so even at 2000 people per hour, the ride wasn't going to accommodate everyone. The thinking was, "Well, Disneyland is a two-day park anyhow!" Except many people were going for two days, and still weren't getting on the ride. People visiting the park for three days weren't riding. Disney's Hollywood Studios, with a 60,000 max capacity, was having similar issues. Opening new rides means parks can increase max capacity, but Frozen and Resistance weren't going to allow them to increase it by much. Also, it's just going to be way cheaper to build. Someone who worked on Rise of the Resistance claims it cost about $450 million. Which explains why this Galaxy's Edge would've been so cheap.
@themainstreetnews20 күн бұрын
Thats a very good point. I was able to count 1200pph in WEB Adventure and 908pph in Crush. Indeed the park has several rides with awful capacity and both Frozen and Lion King will have huge hourly capacities. I’m not sure what the numbers will be but for Lion I think we can expect something in the realm of 2000+, seeing how large the boats will be with 3 people per row

Rise is an amazing ride, a full experience even. That said, I think Galaxy's Edge taking place in one moment in time (the sequels out of all too) was one of the biggest mistakes they did. A fluid timeline land with a great ride, meets and more would be awesome.

If they make Rise of the Rebellion at Disneyland Paris with Darth Vader instead of Kylo Ren, the people will flock to DLP.

the new land sound great but having the pride lands of Africa in France seems strange, its gonna be wierd when its pouring in rain and freezing cold or snowy, that's why Star Wars felt better it doesn't require the weather to help the theming. it will be interesting to see, I mean its one film and one story how do you expand on one ride, Star Wars has so many directions they can go to expand.

If lucasfilm can sort themselves out then they’ll be in a position to give the people what made them and what people want, George Lucas’ Star Wars. The park is calling for a hagrids motorbike styled Star Wars themed rollercoaster. Speeders or pod racers spring to mind
@themainstreetnews21 күн бұрын
That's exactly what I've been saying for months. It a Hagrid's SW coaster in an Endor land would be crazy!
@ChienaAvtzon21 күн бұрын
“The Lion King” has the potential to be Walt Disney Studios/Disney Adventure World’s equivalent to Cars Land. A premier immersive land that is exclusive to that theme park. Cars Land is what saved Disney California Adventure, because it was so unique, and can only be found there. “The Lion King” is a multigenerational phenomenon with iconic music. Part of issue Galaxy’s Edge is that it is the exact same in both California and Florida. While also being too fussy, and was not built for casual theme park guests. Imagineers cares too much about canon, instead of focusing on building fun rides.
@themainstreetnews21 күн бұрын
Well said! I think Lion King will have room to expand into an even better land, that first area is pretty bare and could have a flat ride or better theming however I really do think it'll surprise us all when it comes to the ride itself. The park needs a Radiator Spring Racers type of successful ride!
@conigliostressato21 күн бұрын
@@ChienaAvtzon i still hope they’ll eventually bring Cars Land to DAW (still not used to the new name), it’s a really awesome land, and would be an incredible anchor to the pixar area of the park.
@themainstreetnews21 күн бұрын
Replacing Road Trip with a Cars Land (even if smaller and with just the Spring Racers + relocating the Quatre Roues Rally flat) would be perfect
@ChienaAvtzon21 күн бұрын
@@conigliostressato - I can see Disney potentially bringing a reskinned version of the “Cars” mini-land going into Magic Kingdom to Paris, rather than replicating Cars Land from DCA. That version is rumored to be a trackless, driverless off-road rally race. Unless Disney were to reskin Radiator Springs Racers into Sugar Rush, and build a land around that.
@conigliostressato21 күн бұрын
@ iirc Quatre Ruoes Rallye has a similar ride system of Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree (Zamperla Demolition Derby), albeit with less connected turntables. They could just move it and retheme it and call it a day.
@juanfranciscocabanillas516116 күн бұрын
I would have preferred Star Wars, because the ride is one of the best in the world, and a more adult area, in contrast to Frozen. But I must say that the chosen area looks very well integrated, it has enormous musical potential, and it will be unique, I mean, much better than I imagined... and if Star Wars comes to the castle park, then perfect.

Both themes are very popular in Europe. They should not compete with each other. Both must be built. But it would be better if instead of Batuu they theme the Star Wars land as Tatooine or Coruscant and there are the popular characters like Darth Vader.

On a somewhat related note has there been an explanation why the completely out of place Twilight Zone Tower of Terror sitting at the entrance of entrance of Avengers Campus hasn’t been re themed to the Guardians of the Galaxy? Is the Twilight Zone really such a popular IP in continental Europe?

This is done just thinking in USA guests....but as European I really wanted the Star Wars land. Really a shame. Besides the construction and changes in DLP take almost forever. Conclusion if Disney wanted more USA guests in DLP is perfect but if Disney wanted to secure that europeans go more frequently it wasn't the good choice.

Disney bet on their trilogy being better than the original trilogy, that arrogance resulted in 2 one billion dollar land that are waisted and most SW fans wouldn't want to visit or spent money in. It's another attempt to get a Harry Potter like land without understanding what makes Potter so good. At least The (original) Lion King is Disney from a time they where actually good and not an IP they bought and ruined.
@themainstreetnews20 күн бұрын
I agree to an extent. For me, the biggest and worst decision when it came to Galaxy’s Edge was not recreating a location people know and love AND have it locked in time so that only a few characters can appear. They’ve since loosen the timeline a bit and we’ve seen Mando and Boba Fett appear, which is a good start. The lack of kinetic energy and animation makes the land feel dead and not lived in, which contrasts with all the theming that looks incredible and real
@rosariobono43819 күн бұрын
I think that galaxies edge just performed poorly because of how it’s locked to the timeline of the least popular trilogy, and Disney thought the lack of guest interest was because of the brand not the era of the brand

Not shure with the lion king area.. maybe is cheaper to build but another water ride together in a mostly rainy park doesn't fit for me. Something like Zootopia or the Londonier Mary Poppins cancelled ride from Epcot would fit better but of course is more expensive to build. Not very excited with the expansion really.
@ChienaAvtzon19 күн бұрын
Shows how little you know about the canceled “Mary Poppins” ride. It was a tea-cup spinner, not a dark ride. Boat rides are actually one of the most expensive versions of a dark ride, due to the plumbing for the water systems.

Why would that matter that much? You have speaking based rides like Ratatouille that work perfectly, it would be the same with Star Wars
@Coasteric19 күн бұрын
@ the Interaction in the rides and shops, also gastro and bars are completely different. I experienced booth lands in America and it wouldn’t work here in Paris. The Paris team is not able to handle is amount of different language speaking cast members for all needed languages here in the middle of Europe. - your arguments in the video are not wrong. But the real reason was the multilingual citizens and guest of Europe in the resort.
@themainstreetnews19 күн бұрын
Thank you. I too have experienced Galaxy’s Edge and I seriously think that it wouldn’t be difficult when it comes to the language barrier to operate what they had in mind for Paris. Millennium Falcon would be the biggest problem as the 6 people need to interact with each other, that’s not present here. The only thing I could see be the smallest inconvenience would be the color selection on the loading of Rise, but they do something similar in all the major rides with the numbers (ToT, Space, Pirates…..). The lightsaber experience would be troublesome, not present, the droid experience could be too, also not present. Rise would need to be reworked to have two different audio tracks, one in French and one in English, just like Remy, but it’s an easy task in the end. I just don’t see language being in the top issues and reasons for its cancellation knowing what they were planning to build.
