I’ve been a subscriber since the early days. 2 years ago I decided to make a career change and had to make the extremely difficult decision to sell a little over half of my dividend portfolio to fund my life while I went back to school. I took a screenshot of my positions when I sold and just took a look to see where they are trading currently. Most of them are up a significant amount in just a few years. While I’m upset I missed out on the gains, I’m happy to see that I made the right decision to buy the positions when I initially did. I start my new job next week and cannot wait to start rebuilding my portfolio to where it was prior to selling and beyond! Thanks for always being an inspiration Ian!!!

Same here. But I am 2 years older, so let me tell you... those 2 years will make the world of a difference. Keep putting in as much as you can. I slacked for 2 or 3 years and it fucked my entire portfolio for easily the next 5 years

Great video. When I started to take investing seriously tracking my cash flow became the most important metric. Net worth is secondary. My passive income increased every year, and that is repeatable and worthwhile.

One of the nice things about being diversified into both dividend and non-dividend stocks has been that when I needed to sell stocks to raise cash, I have my value stocks that are there for that purpose. My dividend stocks are much further down the list of what I might sell.

@@ppcianI am curious why people who don’t want to spend their spare time monitoring and worried about diversification, don’t just buy a couple highly rated dividend etf’s like SCHD, DIVO or even JEPI, and worry about your golf swing instead?

Question about the portfolio worksheet: As it reinvests the dividend in the table starting at A40 the YOC is growing each year but the “new money” DRIP’s in shouldn’t be at that new YOC % rather the dividend initial yield. The only way the YOC would continue for the DRIP money is if the dividend payout increases over time with no stock appreciation. That makes drastic differences in the payout $ in later years of the projections. Does that make sense? Am I reading the sheet wrong?

Those steady dividend growers are a way to have your cake and eat it too. Or a different food analogy, you can eat milk and eggs every day while the cows and chickens stay happy out back making more for tomorrow. The high flying tech that doesn't pay dividends? Lots of cake. But if you sell it, you don't have it. Sure in a perfect world you can sell a little bit. But when the market goes down 50%, suddenly you are selling 2x a little bit and leaving a lot less to come back later. Did you think you could cut a steak out of your milk cow or roast just half of a chicken? Sure, if you wait a year you can grow a new cow and/or chicken. But you probably need to keep twice as many because you might want to eat in between now and then and you never know when your livestock is going to get sick and that's sure not a good time to stock the freezer. And what's in the freezer doesn't grow... The high dividend payers are really just the cow and chickens in the freezer. You don't get milk and eggs, and eventually the freezer is going to be empty. Cap gains are nice. But that's the special dinner when we "kill the fatted calf." Day in and day out we eat milk and eggs - the necessities are provided by dividends.
