The human body does not need fish it just needs a source of Omega 3. You see even fish themselves don’t create an omega 3 fatty acid, it is made by plants. Fish eat algae which is a plant that produces long chain EPA and DHA Omega 3 fatty acids.
Now we do have other plant sources of Omega 3 on land such as Flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds and walnuts. These foods contain the precursor to the long chain fatty acids which is ALA and the human body converts this into the long chain fatty acids. Eating 1 tbsp of ground flax seed is more than enough to get all of the Omega 3 fatty acids in a day.
If someone if worried that their body may not be able convert the ALA into DPA and EHA they can simply take an algae based supplement.
Not to mention when you consume fish there high chances of you consuming high levels of toxins due to the laws of bio-maginication. Biomagnification refers to the accumulation of toxic substances in the food chain. The toxic chemicals that are naturally released into the aquatic environment by phytoplankton are absorbed by the lower organisms such as smaller fish. These chemicals are then transferred to different trophic levels when lower organisms are eaten by other organisms.
That means that higher-level predators-fish, birds, and marine mammals-build up greater and more dangerous amounts of toxic materials than animals lower on the food chain. With us humans at the topmost of the food chain we are exposed to the most number of toxins from so called “sea food”. Leaving animal cruelty aside for a minute, Fish is a horrible source of Omega 3.
So there is no need support industries or individuals who head out at sea and use nets and hooks to capture innocent fish who can feel pain and suffering as much you and I can, suffocate them and then bludgeon them to death for Omega 3. We can just take a tablespoon of flax seed instead

How much more nonsense can you speak? Did you ever try to the see the molecular structure difference between Omega 3 fatty acid and algae based DHA? Did you ever try to compare their price? You just can't change how the world works and have been working for centuries. Our bodies are adapted that way.

Your message will be more spread, if you can do a debate between Certified Nutritionists and Doctors. Both send each other their questions and queries in advance, and then prepare for the debate and then have a full debate. If you can do that, then there will be no one to refute you. Look, most of the people are not doctors nor do they have any formal education in diet and nutrition, so we cannot verify if what you are saying is the entire fact or some information is hidden (for example some people say soyabean is a good source of protein, while we know soya is the only plant product that has the most anti nutrients which can't even be reduced by cooking, so japanese people ferment it to make tofu then consume it). So, its very easy to fool regular people. So, why not have a debate with proper researchers and professionals in this field and then if your Message stands, nobody will question you ever again. No, loud mouthing or sarcastic tone, just genuine conversation and debate.

Vegetarians also have low levels of omega 3 fatty acids and choline Consequences of b12 deficiency: Anemia - feeling fatigued all the time, low WBC - frequent infections, falling sick often, low platelets - easy bruising, bleeding gums, etc. neurological - early dementia, poor memory, poor concentration, mood swings, depression, subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord, etc. Choline and omega 3 fatty acid deficiency: A myriad of neurological problems including memory loss, brain fog, depression, etc Humans are omnivores just like how cows are herbivores and lions/tigers are hypercarnivores. Embrace nature. No need to go against nature and enforce a restrictionist diet on yourselves. No use debating against nature and science. You will always lose!

Some studies suggest that less than 5% of ALA is converted to EPA, and even less is converted to DHA. ALA is first converted to EPA by the enzyme delta-6 desaturase. This conversion is not highly efficient, and only a small percentage of ALA is typically transformed into EPA. Further conversion of EPA to DHA occurs through a series of desaturation and elongation reactions. This process is also relatively inefficient, resulting in limited DHA production from ALA.

Great Arvind . I just want to say chia seeds hv to be soaked at least 40 minutes in water till they swell up and form a gel and there after to be consumed ...dry chia seeds can chok as it may stick to the upper food track and swell up there aftr receiving water .. I hv been consuming chia seeds , basil seeds , flax seeds since a long time ...and they did me well . And actually they r a very good source of omega 3 . And I am very happy with those sources .

I agree we are born omnivores but I am unable to eat meat or eggs because of my awareness it caused death of an intelligent creature. Also I can't stand the smell of eggs and couldn't eat it several times given my vegetarian upbringing. Any suggestions for me

The fact is that we follow doctors of western science who says wine is fine, refined flour for daily purpose and violence in every food . All over the world now adapting indian habits , Our PRIDE YOGA(for example, in America they are drinking milk of A2 Desi Cows by knowing their worth, but Indians obsessed with A1 jersey cows)in that way everything they are turning into our ethical habituals but still we can't understand that our long old heritage is Supreme.Doctors profession is not scary.Problem is with Allopathy. Please try to know that every common diseases like Sugar, BP, migrane everything, has permanent solution in our pure Ayurveda, Yoga, and Vedas. Allopathy was best for Accidents and Cancers.Whats the problem with our society is , IF something like brand worked for a problem , then we search for all solutions in that stream only without knowing it properly.(for example a sunscreen from a brand is organic. So i blindly believed all other products in that brand. In reality everything in that isn't organic.) VAIDYO NARAYANA HARI. The doctorate is directly Compared to God.Then Understand my friends does God do harm to even insect?🙂

A valid question and beautifully explained. She took it so well too. Another thing to add is that doctors do not study Nutrition. It is a teeny weeny component of their course. If they had they would have recommended ground up flax or chia seeds to the vegetarian.

I can’t understand what these vegan activists plan to achieve by going against nature. Lions and tigers are hypercarnivores, heck even my cat is a hypercarnivore. The problem is Flax seed contains ALA which the body can convert to omega 3's but it does so very inefficiently (in the range of 5-15%).

Please note that ALA to DHA/EPA conversion is low from vegan sources. Best option is algae or fish based on omega 3 ..

Some people here are arguing about the conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA in plant based foods. Our body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA. This conversion happens in the liver. Research on Omega-3 fats is still ongoing and I couldn't find any conclusive proof on the conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA, as to how much of it gets converted. There are multiple factors that influence the ability of our body to convert ALA into EPA and DHA. The higher the Omega-6 fats consumption is or the higher the ratio of Omega-6 : Omega-3, the lower the conversion is. Omega-6 is found mainly in refined vegetable oils, which is extensively used in fried foods and processed foods. The acceptable ratio of Omega-6 : Omega-3 is between 2:1 and 4:1 Including foods rich in nutrients such as pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), biotin, magnesium and zinc help convert the parent omega-3 ALA into EPA and DHA Fishes are a good source of EPA and DHA but they may contain mercury, heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins and other contaminants, thanks to severe degradation of the quality of our water sources. Only small proportion of linolenic acid is considered to DHA and EPA. But still we can get enough DHA and EPA by consuming 1 table spoon of flex seed.

no need to educate in odisha ... most of people can't meet their daily nutrients requirement if they go vegan we are good as it is .. yeah i can say we can go vegetarian but not vegan .. its too expensive and eating curd and ghee is our biggest strength ... and its used in abada in puri ....... just imagine being a vegan can't eat puri Maha-prasada... so unfortunate

I am a medical doctor. some vegans ask whether there is any nutritional problem in vegan diet. I give following answers 1. never give up vegan diet. 2. never accept negative comments. 3.add some soy oil, gingelly oil, in your diet. 4.add more dhal when you eat rice or wheat based products. 5. take some vitamin B 12 supplements.

Out elders were heathy eating locally available food and fruits. They physically worked hard and didn't have gluttony. The problem now is no exercise and eating from restaurants. Gym will not do any good. Man is made to run not as couch potatoes. Our life style is the problem . Eat anything moderately. Around 25 yrs back hardly any fast foods and people hardly went out and ate.

Even for flaxseed oil Body's ALA changes to DHA & EPA r ridiculously low max at 15% goes even lower wid higher omega6 intake & age,ppls shud b vry careful wid inflamed & obstructive bowel & narrowing of esophagus while taking flaxseed bcuz can cause intestinal blockage & try to drink alot of water to mitigate it's negative effects

If you can eat shellfish, Mussels actually fall into a grey area in terms of veganism. I still believe that a more plant based diet is better than a perfect vegan diet because more people can get into it and it accomplishes more.

Conversion of ALA is too low in humans. Omega 3s can be easily oxidised so taking flax seeds doesn't help because when they come in contact with oxygen, thw oxygen oxidises the omega in flaxseed oil. And algae supplements are too expensive in india and ots hard to find genuine algae supplement in india

If you are not on a low fat vegan fatty acids are not going to be an issue. If they still are you can always add 1 or 2 spoonfuls of flaxseed oil a day.

You are missing the point, flax seeds or chia seeds are easier than eating fish, just buy flax seeds and eat them. But for fish you have to go to one of the stinkiest places on earth and pick up a fish of your choice, come home, remove the scales, remove the bones, cut the fish, cook them etc. So much work to eat a fish. You are very smart to think it's less complex to eat fish than flax seeds, LMAO
