Hydrophobic actually means it has water repelling properties, not that it is unsuitable for use in the presence of water. Good points. The Solar Tank is a genius move from Cartier. They’ve surely made good mechanical models but they are off cause more expensive. This is a “cheap” way to come by that historical design, and in praxis it functions as an automatic (-as long as it gets its light). It’s a lot of money for a quartz piece - but after all Cartier is mostly about the design.

The vast majority of mechanical luxury watches contain mass produced, machine made and machine decorated movements that cost a few hundred dollars at the very most when ordered in bulk by watch brands. So, quartz shouldn't be seen as some magic recipe to drastically lower the price of any watch. If you think that quartz is cheap trash just because it is mass produced and machine made, then whatever movement is inside your Longines, Omega, Tudor, Breitling, Rolex or Grand Seiko is also trash because guess what - those movements are also mass produced, machine made and machine decorated. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it at all. Quartz is great, period. So is your Cartier.
