It's a subculture partly comprised of people who flock to the furry fandom who do, however--trans, gay, people with disabilities or autism, minorities... they find a home with us as our fandom is universally accepting, understanding of, and patient with these individuals. This is a fandom where a hug -actual physical human contact, shown to have positive effects on mental health- is a greeting instead of weird, and everyone has something they can connect with and talk about outside of their main interest enough to network for people who do share your interest, and then break the ice with cute pictures of a fursona/fursuit/furry hobby! All they need is that anti-bullying drumbeat loud and clear, and more opportunities for an individualized education, college opportunities, how to adult, a safe place to learn in free from violence and drugs, and freedom from oppression to express their identity to figure themselves out as people. Bullies need to be taught empathy, going over what it's like to be in someone else's shoes, or even shown how our morals and biases are relative, and how even an illness like mild autism might really just be evolution at work and not illness at all, something to be appreciated for its strengths and supported for its flaws. They need to be nurtured, their family lives need to be improved, and their futures need to be worth fighting for, so that they feel loved and don't have to seek attention by acting out in a negative way to the point the behavior becomes so deeply ingrained that they are ruined as a person before the 8th grade. Break the cycle of abuse and ignorance! While communities could learn a lot of things studying the fandom and how we treat one-another, and how we have fun, furries do not need to be promoted, just accepted--keep in mind the difference between tolerance and acceptance; tolerating is synonymous with putting up with (someone), so the resentment is still there and bleeds out into interactions. Acceptance is seeing no problem at all with the fact that Tommy is dating Kevin, and Lisa was Richard last semester, or that Elise sees phantom sock puppets with bleeding, hollow eye sockets in place of people. P.S. Trans isn't a modern issue, there were temples in ancient Sumeria for the goddess Ishtar/Inanna where trans were at least accepted by the God of those times. The Epic of Erra would be a good poem to read.

I had a teddy bear in High School I used to talk to and snuggle with due to a lack of friends... It sounds so sad to say it now all these years later but I loved that dude. I moved on to a little Husky plush and that's when I really realised hey... FURRY. I also was (and still am) OBSESSED with Kingdom Hearts. Especially II, that got me through some dark dark times. Coping mechanisms aren't stupid.

The fictional character that had the biggest impact on me from an early age (4-5) was Darkwing Duck. Yes, an old 1990s toon hero. But he was the first capes and mask hero I’d ever watched and he was so cool with all his gadgets. He always got back up and fought for what was right, no matter how much he was beat or blown up. He had a huge ego I didn’t like, but he realized his mistakes and did what was right at the end of each episode. He inspired me to always do what was right and do my best and never give up in everything that I do, to this very day. Other kids were bullied and I would stand up to the bully and defend them, usually swinging a punch to the face and getting in trouble sure (this was the influence of Gosalyn), but helped the innocent and I never actually got in trouble for it and they always tried to thank me by giving me their snacks or desserts at snack time, which I normally refused unless they just would not stop insisting I take it. Darkwing influenced my love of purple being my favorite color and liking fedoras as stylish and dramatic entrances and witty banter, sarcastic barbs, and spontaneous puns. Darkwing paved the way for me later liking Batman as my other favorite superhero later on because both worked hard, had no powers, used gadgets, and did everything through grit skill and intellect. Darkwing Duck made me who I am.

man, i really feel you on this Stormi. i dealt with a lot of bullying. i've never had a lot of friends. i have pretty severe social anxiety and depression. and yeah, fictional characters have helped me through a lot of emotional stuff too. both as concepts, AND as plushies! one, as you can guess, is Spyro, but there have been (and still are) a LOT.

Oh Stormi, this video is definitely my favorite on KZbin just because of how much I can relate to you. Tails is definitely my favorite character from Tails for the same reasons, I was bullied in school for so many reasons, one of the reasons was my teeth as well it sucked so I can definitely relate to you on that. Also, yeah plushies are my coping mechanism as well, all though I did have a hard time in my teenage years and with a very abusive boyfriend I was with at the time I would cut then hug my favorite plushie, my teddy bear (I still have her to this day and won't be getting rid of her ever) until I passed out from not eating or from the cutting. I actually have many plushies I hug and love every single one of them, so yeah I totally agree with what you said that it shouldn't matter what someone has as a coping mechanism if it is not unhealthy like I used to do, people should not make fun of someone else just because they have plushies as a coping mechanism. My favorite Sonic character (and all time favorite character!) Is Shadow the Hedgehog!! I first got into Sonic when I had a lot going on in my life and I could somewhat relate to him because he's also been through a lot! Such a beautiful story, a lot of what you talked about hit me hard bc I’ve made a connection with many video game characters and relate to them. The biggest one that I look up to definitely has to be John/Spartan 117/master chief from the Halo series. He is such a strong independent character that is put threw such an unimaginable stress but comes out fine in the end as if he had nothing but a slight scratch. I would love to have more plushies to hug but 1. I’m broke, 2. My parents would question me. I have done some really bad things to cope that only made things worse on me but now trying to fix it and find better ways to cope. I figured I was the only one who gets an emotional attachment to video game characters but happy to hear I’m not the only one that’s weird. Love the videos and keep up the good work!

Dude, you kinda reminded me of how much I loved Todd and Robin Hood as a kid. Foxes were one of my favorite animals growing up, but for the longest time my step dad straight up bullied and made fun of me for it. It got to the point where I'd actively avoid anything having to do with foxes so he'd leave me alone about it, which really sucked because I wound up throwing my favorite fox toy at the time into the shed. The damage is still kinda there today, but I'm slowly starting to learn the love the adorable lil' fluff butts again.

I can relate to this so bad! My favorite video game character was from the first ever game I played which might have been Super Mario World. I always thought that Yoshi was the coolest and the cutest thing I'd ever seen and I still do. His design is simple and I know he's not real but I always thought he was, I just could never see him. Today, I have three Yoshi collectibles - a giant plush, a small plush and a tiny red Yoshi figure.

I've loved the Sonic franchise since the beginning yet my first encounter with Tails was on the third game but eventually I did get the first and second games. I never had a Game Gear to play Tails' stand-alone games but I did eventually play them through emulation and I agree that they should probably give Tails a game again for a change though it does make me wonder what it would potentially be about. Remake of the old game(s) or an entirely new adventure all together. I'll be honest, my collection is nothing like yours but at the same time I could never afford to really get many plushes of Tails, I did recently get a little collectible figure of him (I think it's like 2.75" tall or something like that, I keep it in the box). As a kid I watched the heck out of the TV series, and even though I knew he was a fictional character I always wanted to give him comfort when he was down or sad on screen.
