Patrick (H) Willems why do you imply the idea of cameras being the problem (with no proper evidence) and then exact it by going back to your issue and then have hope because of the camera......youre very inconsistent in this video or didn't explain your correlation properly. Interstellar and Hateful Eight are great examples of filmmakers working with the tools they have and just letting the film stocks speak for themselves. I still look at Drive (2011) as THE best usage of digital to print examples. Was blown away when I found that movie was shot on digital (although recorded to HD-cam). The wide range of colors on that film really convinced me digital could go head to head with film. Years after that initial movement we're at a time where desaturated films are king, both studio and indie ones unfortunately.

Hi, professional colorist here. Sorry to get a little pedantic but your black value argument is actually severely flawed. Specifically what you measured with the eye dropper was the legal black value (6.25%, or digital code 16 on an 8 bit scale) which is used in video files in the REC 709 color primaries intended for television and theater, as opposed to the full scale black value 0% which is used on computer screens. While I agree that they don't use a very strong contrast curve, I can tell you that the primary thing you're seeing wrt black points is a technical issue between improper standards conversions rather than a colorist's decision. I've seen moderate to severe issues with this not only in my own footage misbehaving between my own systems, but also between different quality renders on KZbin, whether im streaming to my tv or not. Worse than that, sometimes the versions on iTunes or Netflix or Blu-ray are all different in how they're presented, depending on whether the right metadata flags are present in the stream or not. Yes, colorists can and do make decisions about black points, but when you're dealing with a studio like marvel there are other possible points of failure in the image distribution pipeline that the film goes through. Don't be so hasty to judge - you've just accidentally peaked into the messy world of video standards errors

@redplanet768 жыл бұрын
Sergio Lugo color grading has been used for decades but was primarily achieved as a chemical process. You of course could use certain filters on the camera to shift the look. Oh brother where art thou wasn't the first film graded but it's considered the first feature length film to be digitally colored from front to back through the "digital intermediate" process, which is what we use today... although we use much better and much less expensive tools than they had obviously.
@ozgruntsyd42818 жыл бұрын
Not quite correct. PAL video had a black value of 0. NTSC had the 6.25% value which is one of the reasons a lot of countries hated the look of it (that and their power supplies ran at 50hz not 60hz). So I take it you are an 'old' professional colourist and still abide by the rules from the analogue days. Everything is digital now right through to the screen so there is no need to even consider the nasty limits imposed on us by analogue technologies of yesteryear.

People are saying that the film has to look grey in order to have a "realistic" look, but if you look at movies like The Dark Knight or the Dark Knight Rises 4K Blu-rays, it becomes quite apparent that a film can look realistic without having to have a low contrast color grade. GOTG2 and Ragnarok had some very nice grading and I think they handled their digital images well.

TDK had the opposite problem. Everything else in the movie was so grounded and gritty, they needed saturation to make it resemble a comic book movie.
@jacobbentley93186 жыл бұрын
Have you seen dark Knight? From what I remember the colours were pretty toned down
@ViveLRoi6 жыл бұрын
I would not agree with that. TDK has very strong colors, they're just mostly in shades of blue and black. But the use of black does give great depth to the contrasting colors-- mostly blues and purples. It's not really toned-down or washed out. Of them, Batman Begins might possibly be described having a washed out look, and it's very brownish in its overall color palette. But I still think it makes excellent use of black to bring out those colors. It helps that all 3 of Nolan's Batman movies were shot on film rather than digital.

@ActiumFilms8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have. There certainly is a small visual difference between cameras like the Arri Alexa and the various REDs, but it doesn't affect the final image we see in the cinema that much. Using a different camera is not going to make Civil War look like Iron Man. It's all down to the lighting and colour grading, not the camera at all. The camera is just the tool. It's all the processes that give the footage a particular look.

You can still see it in some of Marvel's more recent movies like Thor Ragnarok, even though it's is one of the most colorful and beautifully shot MCU movies to date (in my opinion). DC's color grading feels less flat (especially in Wonder Woman) but the dark tones and SO MUCH BLUE (the Zack Snyder look) run the risk of going to the opposite extreme. I have to agree the suspension of disbelief that the audience has to put into a film, as our part of the artistic process has become an increasing issue with modern excessive colour grading. Just look at the Jurassic franchise for a perfect example. The original was shot on film and has a natural colour balance, World was shot digitally and over graded in post, the result was a less engaging visual effect. It is reminiscing of Spector’s wall of sound in the 60s or autotune, within a style it has a place but over use results in an unsatisfying artificial feeling. Marvel have been trying to sell the MCU as a real world rather than a comic book cartoon, it is a stylistic choice that has worked for them.

Like GotG, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor and the other more mystical, cosmic & space themed ones can embrace the comic outlandishness. Then more realistic ones like Captain America, Black Panther, Iron-Man, etc are fine to have more muted, subtle colour grading. That’s just my view anyway

Huh, funny how I never noticed that, but once pointed out, it is fairly obvious. Although I have to say that it fits movies like Winter soldier and Civil War better, than let's say Ant-Man, and it actually works into their advantage. But it's true that it probably shouldn't have been used on every movie since they stopped shooting on film, just the ones with a more realistic undertone while the lighter movies would've benefitted from a more colorful approach. It doesn't make the movies ugly per sebut I can definitely see your point.
@Yatsura28 жыл бұрын
Cant see how it does give them an advantage. Those movies are everything but realistic and dont want to be. Thats not a bad thing. Nobody wants to see _"realistic superhero fights"_. The best fights in comics were always those best drawn with good contrasts and colors. Those are comic movies, so they should do the same.
@jarosbodytko64628 жыл бұрын
Yatsura2 Maybe 'realistic' is the wrong word here. I guess I mean it gives the movies more gravitas, subtly suggesting there's more at stake than just the classic 'good guy vs bad guy and all is well at the end'-thing. The more colorful (in the broader sense of the word) movies are the ones like Iron Man, Ant-Man, etc... that stand on their own while the movies that are greyer are the movies that foreshadow a bigger plot. That's why I think those movies benefit more from that color pallet, or lack thereof. Don't know if that makes sense, but it comes across that way to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the very comic-y feel that the Marvel movies have. Not everything needs to be The Dark Knight.
@sydnehan4778 жыл бұрын
I agree--I think the Russo Bros were specifically going for a more grounded, realistic look in TWS because of the tone shift between 1940's Captain America and modern-day Captain America. The action and political plot lines became much more grounded in realism starting with TWS too, so for the CapAm series, I think the coloring is fine. But I agree with you that lighter MCU titles like Guardians and Ant-Man could've gone with the more comicbook-like contrast and color.
@avip85398 жыл бұрын
Does no one think this is on purpose? So the characters look more realistic or more connected to this world.
@Pepingco8 жыл бұрын
It can also just be lazy post production or really bad producers who want to stay safe and dont want to take a risk with something already gaining a lot of steam. The issue is complicated because the film versions of their movies looked highly saturated and look nothing like any of their digital films after Iron man. So obviously its not AS intentional as people think. Film grading is really expensive and film is also risky when producers rush directors. Digital is cheaper and faster and you only need one grader so it kinda makes sense financially and once you have the grading, its REALLY EASY to cut and paste. But Im just another nerd that needs to shut up lol.

except theyre not lol. that works for the dark knight trilogy because it was a more realistic take. In this case, you have literal gods, stones that control different aspects of reality, a guy who can shrink and become giant, and most recently, someone who travels through different planes of existence. It would make more sense to have it be just a smidge out of flat colors. not enough to be jarring, just enough to make it seem like a different universe where all that is normal. side note: Batman begins had amazing color grading anytime batman was in a scene. it switched from flat colors to deep contrast depending on whether bruce wayne or batman were on screen. it was subtle, but helped differentiate between the different personas

And they can definitely make better stylistic choices that still align to the "realistic" feel they want to impart. I agree with you on Pacific Rim! It maximizes the audio visual experience to the hilt, making it more enjoyable to watch in theaters. Aquaman too, as the most recent superhero flick! I'm all about getting dazzled by a genre like this, I mean, isn't that the whole point?

Lou Danganan Not so much realistic, but more grounded. The heroes that aren’t meant to be super out there like captain America and iron man are achieving an everyday lives look rather than comic book. Which was a smart decision, considering that comic book movies wasn’t really taken seriously when iron man came out. Grounded and Gritty was the best choice

@@coattanimous7182 But Iron Man was on film! It did not in fact have this drab grading. That's one reason why it's still my favourite Marvel film. I would also say that grounded is almost the opposite of gritty. DC films and Lord of the Rings look gritty with their dynamic range. You can see all of the markings on people's skin for instance. In Marvel films, everyone's skin looks smooth and dim to me. Overall, I think Nolan did it perfectly with Dark Knight. There still hasn't been a more 'realistically' colour-graded super-hero film to date than that one, in my opinion.

Miles Anderson Every marvel film usually has a great pallet if it isn’t meant to be a be a more grounded political thriller like Civil war or winter solider. The other ones that don’t are Thor 2 and iron man 3. Otherwise we have the beautiful space of infinity war, guardians, and Thor 1&3, the contrasting colors of iron man 1&2- and the bright colors of ant man and the wasp. It’s rarely drab. Also no, grounded is not the opposite of realistic. Grounded means it’s more realistic than a cartoony mess. That’s why it’s called grounded. Also, the dark knight doesn’t do any thing particularly good with lighting. It just turns up some blues and deepens the shadows. It works fine, and it’s a great film, but it’s colors are dull next to a ton of marvel films (gotg 1&2, Thor ragnarock)

@SKyrim1908 жыл бұрын
Yes, kind of...I agree that using only a "normal world" scale is boring and flat, but just upping the saturation is not great either. The color scheme of the movie should be meaningful to the story being told. So an Iron Man movie can have a different look when compared to an Ant-Man. Only saturating everything is not a solution. However, I understand that this was quickly done just to prove a point and Marvel has infinitely more resources than KZbin guy. I just think some of them did not look THAT good...

I personaly LOVE saturated colors, even if it does look a bit wrong, and I actually color graded civil war for my first time watching it, and I'm planing to increase saturation for (mostly) every movie I watch from now on
@DarthHater1007 жыл бұрын
He didn't really answer the question, but I know the answer: 3D. The film makers actually address this in special features/commentary. . . how they've "mastered" lighting and grading for 3D. That is why they have brighter black levels and even lighting, to make up for the darkening-effect of 3D glasses. And overly colorful images can cause crosstalk on some LCD active displays, which is likely what they are using for playback when shooting digital. Marvel has some of the least problematic 3D and it is totally because of the way they've chosen to light and color grade their movies. I think if you go back and look at the grading and lighting, you will see the Avengers look emerging when they began doing movies in 3D. If you don't like it though, or you're not watching in 3D, just adjust your TV's settings. . . crank the saturation and lower the brightness and voila! Really, I think they should do two different masters, one for glasses on/3D, one for glasses off/2D.

I don't think that's the issue. Beauty and the Beast, Kong: Skull Island, and Ghost in the Shell 2017, especially the GitS, have just as good, if not better 3D than the MCU (BB having the best), without looking grey. GitS even takes place during the night half the time and it sure doesn't have this problem. Shit, Avatar, the gold standard for 3D, doesn't have this problem. I truly doubt filmmakers deliberately sacrifice their aesthetics just for 5% of the showings that are in 3D. It's that sarcastic remark from the video that's probably the reason: people like flat looking because they're used to it from every single other media. It's much easier to look at, especially when scenes at night and at day have the same look, the transition doesn't hurt the eyes. And now with people bitching about the DCEU looking too dark, they doubled down on this: the recent Spider-Man Homecoming footage, and even Guardians 2 to an extent, have their saturation crancked up to an absurd degree, to the point that New York is bathed in sunlight as if it has a beach, while not fixing the contrast at all. It doesn't help that Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther had the exact same look either.
@AikiNickAMV27 жыл бұрын
Well, this was informative, articulate, well edited and without a hint of pretentiousness. You, sir, gained a subscriber and I would love to see more video essays. On the topic itself, my guess would be that that since Marvel crosses over all of their films, they don't want them to look very different. To use an extreme example: imagine if Sin City crossed over with Mad Max. If that crossover had a look of the former, the characters of latter would look out of place and vice-versa. If it had a completely new look, than both would look out of place. I'm not saying Marvel is justified in using this method, perhaps they should figure it out better, this is just my best guess as to why a studio this large would make this kind of choice, which most definitely is a deliberate one.
@johng74108 жыл бұрын
I like the flat look, because it makes it more "real". Marvel has fantastical characters and (unlike DC) the movies tend to be very funny and tongue in cheek. So having the flat look I think helps ad realism to the otherwise less serious parts of the movie.
@geneparmesan87488 жыл бұрын
I can definitely see how it would help characters like Iron Man or Captain America, who are very inherently "cartoonish" and would never blend into the real world. I'd be interested in more colour saturation in Guardians, though, because that movie was much sillier and didn't try to be so realistic. And I don't know if you could saturate specific cells, but ignoring the saturation on godlike characters like Thor or Loki would probably be a cool effect (because then the gods would be deeper colours than everyone else, underscoring the fact that they're from another dimension).

But it's not just people who buy comics that watch the movies. Making it seem more "real" color wise keeps the audience from thinking "no way that couldn't happen" during the scene itself. Actually very few people buy comics compared to how many watch the movies. Base the idea off the comic, but different medium and different audience so don't just copy the pop style of the comic.

Mysterious Enigma that's the way comic book films approached things in the early 2000's. But ever since the Dark Knight brought mainstream audiences, comic book movies have really forged a new, more grounded identity. Generally speaking, comics are a more stylized medium, whereas movies are more muted and conservative in what they show. If you want examples of movies that adopt the look of comics: Kick Ass, 300, Watchmen.

I don't think this is an issue. The problem here is that this is all subjective. You can love it or hate it and you wouldn't be wrong. I personally never saw their moves as muddled down but keep in mind that we're seeing exactly what they WANT us to see. The colorist isn't some college amateur that's doing it incorrectly, this is just how they had it planned. Maybe the point was that they didn't want their color grading to look the same as every other action film?
@theangryseal57058 жыл бұрын
It isn't subjective dude. Marvel movies look like amateur rackaracka youtube videos. It's measurable and hence objectively provable, as done in this video.

The Angry Seal How can you say it isn't subjective? Clearly you have a different opinion of it which proves it IS subjective. Do you honestly think all cinema is color graded one way?

It Came From A Box No but these marvel movies are. Dude did you watch this video properly? he slowly and fantastically proves how cheap and non-movie like these films really look. they are unlike old marvel movies like the spiderman trilogy, which actually looked like huge superhero epics in terms of colour grading. Not to mention the mix of practical effects and cgi was way way better and realistic looking.
@itcamefromabox8 жыл бұрын
Fantastically? I, once again, disagree. Do you think the color artists on the film don't know how to pump the contrast and play with levels and curves? He even brings it up at 3:35 and states it's all subjective aesthetics. I'm not defending these movies but I am defending their right to take any artistic privilege that they choose to use regardless of whether you or I agree with them. Did you not stop and think that maybe the point is that they DON'T want to look like the Spider-Man trilogy? Especially since those previous films don't belong in their current MCU. And VFX is a whole other beast, in these current films they don't crush their blacks on so they can't hide effects within them, it takes a whole lot more to make CG characters, beams, lasers, explosions etc. look anywhere near believable.

Movies like Sicario and Spotlight use the flat looking image to portray some kind of realistic tone. I think part of the problem may be cinema owners. It's been known for a long time that many cinema owners reduce lumens in their projectors to save money on power. This results in dark and muddy images, and why people complain so many films these days are too dark to see what's happening in scenes with a lot of shadow in them. I believe Marvel is compensating for this by red-lining tone up at the top end, which, on a screen with low light, will have the effect of creating more differentiation in the grey registers where there used to be just black.
