The problem was that they were given a foreign property and both decided to go in a completely original direction from what came before, instead of following the treatments given by George Lucas himself. Kathleen Kennedy was also at fault as she’s normally just a person who manages the harder parts of filmmaking so that the director can make his movie. It’s the reason why Spielberg was able to pump out so many high budget original films back in the eighties, I mean you can see the quality improvement after 1941 with Raiders of the lost Ark. So you basically had an uncreative Hollywood producer scouting out Hollywoods “most popular young directors”, in other words the directors that make movies that are easily marketable to audiences, to continue a franchise without the original creators input. I mean it was doomed to fail.

Prepare for the third movie to be FUCKED beyond comprehension. EDIT: Saw the movie. Turned out to be decent. Something I'd say is a 7/10 movie. The villain was pretty 1-dimensional and the CGI wasn't very good. But most of the actual action scenes were well done, and both Deadpool and Wolverine themselves are solid. And I'd say 90% of the humor worked. Overall it's the best movie we've been given in this whole Multiverse Saga so far.

Well I took that feature as being part of Loki's manipulation of Asgard in pretending to be Odin. The play and audience reaction serves to show us, the audience, that Loki was able to spin a particular narrative where Loki was the hero of Asgard and not Thor. The fact that nobody makes a big deal about Thor is done on purpose to show us that something's amiss here. When the lady in the audience puts her hand on Thor, his reaction is the same as our reaction, which is "Don't you recognise that's Thor?!". That's the whole point.

Taika is the perfect example of what people refer to as an “ideas man”. Someone who is good for throwing out tons of options in the writing room but you’re not going to want him in charge because he is going to want to do all those ideas at once regardless of if they fit together or not.

Idea guys can also be good writers, it just takes some talent and know how in regards to what good writing actually is. The main perk of idea guys is that they have a creative spark that other types of people might not necessarily have, making them useful in a team of people in need of ideas but with the talent to handle other important roles. Without that kind of talent and just being a huge wellspring of ideas, an idea guy in the writers chair just ends up cobbling together a tangled mess of ideas vaguely resembling a story. The same person, but more well disciplined on how to write will still be coming up with all the same ideas, but will have a better grasp on which ones to keep and how to satisfyingly tie them into the story. Overall though, idea guys are better off being part of a team rather than the main guy in charge of a project. Their input is valuable, but it should be up to people much more professional at writing and editing to decide which of their ideas to use and how to use them. If they do get an opportunity to write a whole script, it should be subject to peer review and edit by other talented writers before it goes into any sort of actual movie production.

How the MCU deals with humor these days is a major issue. Phases 1-3 dealt with it in a way in which the humor was more of an ice breaker or a light hearted exchange between the characters that never messed with or ruined a serious plot. The story was still every bit as serious as it was needed to be. Phase 4 treats humor like its a necessity in every show or movie irrespective of what the story requires. Thor love and thunder is a film which requires a very serious approach given it's context. Instead Waititi was like "make Thor funny hehehehe"

To defend Taika a little bit, when you get as big as him you often find yourself surrounded by enamored yes-men who don't feel it's their place to give the famous director feedback, even if he really needs it. It apparently happened to George Lucas on the Star Wars prequels too, no one was willing to give him proper feedback, even when he asked for it. I remember seeing a James Gunn interview where he mentions he has a few close writer friends he bounces his ideas off of, who aren't afraid to tell him when they think one of his ideas stink. It's probably why he's one of the few current directors who can put out shows of consistently good quality. (He also believes in finishing scripts before beginning filming, something Disney has not been doing, and it shows.)

That scene in Thor: Ragnarök also showed that Thor was no fool. He see's through the visage and can tell it's Loki. This sets it up nicely for when later in the movie Thor see's through another of Loki's tricks and gets the upper hand on him.

Asgardians have intellects that human beings can't comprehend. I know you have to create a character within the bounds of what people can realistically believe, but Asgardians are galaxy-spanning aliens that created wonders. The average Asgardian is roughly 90-100 times stronger than Captain America and significantly more intelligent, but they are portrayed as being as meek and feeble as humans. That's why I've always had a problem with how movies present superhumanly powerful beings. They would move so quickly and create such destruction that humans wouldn't even be able to see them. They would appear as a blur to normal humans. Even in Star Wars, the Jedi and Force-users are superhumanly fast and superhumanly strong, because of their connection with the force, yet they are portrayed as regularly-adept human sword-fighters and nearly as slow. The problem with repeating scenes in a comedy sequel is that jokes are generally way less funny the second time around. In Raganrok the play scene was basically quite funny (as well as the various other purposes it fulfilled as described in the video), but repeating it in L&T.. well it's just like hearing the same joke again - the joke is old and not really funny, but this time it doesn't even fulfill any other purpose either. I'm surprised that someone like Waititi who has made their name with humourous films thought this would work.

I found the elevator scene in Thor: Ragnarok an example of a Taika scene done well. The development between Thor and Loki really hits an all time high in the brief dialogue they have in the elevator to the hangar. Thor acknowledges his brother, Loki for who he is and not what Thor hopes/wants him to be, but expresses his unconditional love for his brother regardless. The scene ends with Thor actually putting that new character development immediately into action by planting the shock device on Loki. Thor knew that after expressing his love to his brother that Loki would likely try something cheeky, showing further that he won't be tricked so easily as in the past. This scene has 2 jokes. One after a long, digestible pause in the elevator to break the cathartic moment with their "Get help" bit. This bit shows that sense of brotherly love their relationship has desperately needed and I think fits well since they give the dialogue some time to breath before whipping it out. The other, when Thor actually gets the best of Loki ( and some payback) by unexpectedly planting that shock device on him. Both of these jokes were funny (imo) and actually expressed the recent growth Thor has gone through as a character. Love and Thunder takes the goofyness from those jokes but removes the substance that respects the characters and story being told. They could have easily pulled this off with characters such as Gorr (if they had put decent time into his backstory) and Jane Foster who had a lot of potential for character growth. *sigh* I guess not :/

The Drinker's strength is his ability to explain why things work or don't work, in a way anybody can understand. Anybody can dunk on things they don't like. It's much harder to back things up with premises and reasoning, and show how things could have been done better. The educational angle also contributes to fixing the entertainment industry. Maybe one day, one or more of the million+ viewers of this video will be out there, making better pop culture for us all.

I was hoping Thor would have an emotional outburst about how much loss he's endured, particularly in the scene where Jane tells him her condition. I really thought he'd start breaking down or have an outburst because even though he's just barely gotten back to a "healthy" mindset (which I don't think is true given he's just avoiding everything outside of fighting), this is yet another significant loss that he's being confronted with. I mean, he really can't catch a break. Since Thor 2, I think he's suffered significant losses in nearly every movie. It's honestly super tragic, and while we got to see how affected Thor was in End Game, I don't think we really got to see his recovery. He just got a slight bit of catharsis when they defeated Thanos. So I was expecting him to FINALLY have that in this movie when confronted by Jane's situation. But... Nothing. We got like a sympathetic sigh and a frown. Also, was I the only one who thought Thor should be confused by "cancer"? I mean, why would he already know the implications of cancer? I'd assumed that was a purely human affliction, one he hasn't encountered before, so unless he and Star Lord have been having serious heart to hearts about their pasts, I just didn't think this made sense.

One of the biggest problems with L&T was that it basically rehashed all the same stuff we’ve seen before in slightly different ways. - The Immigrant song used twice in Ragnarok was used 4 times here - Gorr is basically a watered down Thanos using some magic macguffin to achieve his goal of mass murder in an instant - The Zeus post credits scene is basically identical to the Guardians 2 post credits scene - The theatre piece being rehashed for jokes - Korg fake dies like Loki (but isn’t nearly as emotionally charged) - Korg is just being Korg. He was fine as a side character with a few minutes of screen time total, but he quickly gets annoying as a main character - Thor becoming a dad like Tony - Thor needing to “figure out who he is” for like the third time now - Getting the thunderbolt because it’s a powerful weapon that can help stop Gorr like when Thor went to make Stormbreaker in IW Also, all the characters felt like parodies of themselves. Pretty much the entire movie felt like if the Team Thor shorts were turned into a theatrical movie. Nothing but jokes, turning Thor into an idiot, etc. Also, Taika really seems to hate Sif and the Warriors Three. He killed off the three instantly with no regard for Thor’s emotional response, he brought Sif back in a comic accurate costume just to cut off her arm and write her out of the movie, and I feel like it was all just to make room for Valkyrie and Korg (which is just an excuse for him to talk more and more in these movies). I’m pretty sure the only reason Sif wasn’t killed in Ragnarok was because of scheduling conflicts with the actor. And so much of the dialogue was basically just exposition and describing the plot like they’re reading script notes or something. It’s that one line Korg had in Ragnarok where he analyzed the loss of Mjolnir and applied to basically everyone. To me, Thor’s arc should have ended with him becoming king. It’s what his entire journey was leading up to, so to basically have that thrown away in favour of more wacky adventures feels like a character assassination.

At least the Team Thor sketches went for 2-3 minutes. They're funny and entertaining because they don't have/need a crazy story and the comedy was a hit and run, not a constantly smash you on the head for 2 hours. Watching characters do goofy shit for the sake of goofy shit is great for a short spin off like Team Thor but you can base a FEATURE LENGTH film on "hahaha so randem XD lol". Ragnarok worked because while there was a lot of goofy shit, it was balanced carefully with seriousness, had stakes, the characters developed meaningfully and stayed serious when necessary for the story. No one is going to take your plot seriously if your characters don't even take it seriously.

The theater scene could have been great if Taika put a bit more thought into the scene. The theater scene could have explained why Jane is able to wield the hammer. What I imagine is that the play elaborates on what Hela did to Thor's hammer. They could show how Hela secretly collected the hammer before being teleported to Asgard. While she was ruling Asgard, Hela works on a spell to restore the hammer for herself. She succeeds, but places a new spell on the hammer. The spell only allows those who are worthy of being queen of Asgard to lift Mjolnir. This would better explain why Jane is able to lift the hammer in the movie. Jane posses the right traits to lead Asgard to its previous glory at Thor's side.

Interesting how your scene comparison review comes up on my feed a day after struggling to finally watch the movie itself. I think I slogged through 45 minutes before just giving up and watching something else. Too right about the 'play' scene, but the rest of what I watched felt as if this scene never ended. All of what I watched seemed like a bad local theatre play, where the leads are given to relatives of the donors that help keep the 15 seat theatre open. And the writing! Imagine Thor having to explain to a supposedly dying Sif that she can't get to Valhalla by dying on the battlefield, but that she has to die in the actual battle and her being surprised by this! No self-respecting Viking would ever need this explained, let alone the Norse gods they worshipped. If she dies from her wounds after the battle, she'd be given a proper sending to Valhalla by having her body cremated on a longboat. This information isn't even difficult to read about so the entire scene was another waste of time and dialogue, leading to nothing. As I said, I surrendered after 45 minutes of this drivel. How the movie ends, I have no idea. Nor do I care. I sure hope Marvel rights the longboat very soon, before they actually make the DC movies seem good by comparison.

The biggest issue I have is that they're really butchering the lore that Thor is derived from, as well as not taking care to respect the character growth that had occurred before. I had expected the next Thor movie to focus on his grief and the journey that would take him through, after loosing his home-world, his father, and his brother he's deservingly depressed. I was thinking we would see his interactions with the guardians, or maybe work through what had happened with the avengers and how he's effectively left that life behind. There was a lot of ripe storytelling available to address the biggest point developmentally in his character after the last movie. But Taika took all of the seriousness and driven storytelling and turned it into a cheap joke. Like I am honestly astounded at how a multi million dollar movie feels so genuinely, disgustingly cheap. The actors must feel almost ashamed and I really pity them. Overall Marvel has lost my faith, my excitement, and my loyalty. I will no longer be watching their movies in theaters unless they're widely known to be worth the time and money to go see. Hell, if they shit the bed like this one did I probably won't stream them either. No reason to subject my eyes and psyche to such a disasterous wreck.

Really, this is a good lesson for anyone making any sort of published media period. If you're going to tell a story, you need to know the purpose of each scene, what it accomplishes, and how effectively it accomplishes it. If your first response to being asked if your scene accomplishes one of those three things is, "Well, that's too strict of a criteria," you aren't making something for others to enjoy, you're making something purely for yourself. And yes, I've talked to many an aspiring writer, and when I ask if their scene either develops a character or progresses the plot, they gave push back to that.

This reminds me of the difference between the star wars ot and the prequels. Lucas was always the man with the creativity and the vision for the story. This was true in both instances. However, in the OT he surrounded himself with talented people who checked him and ultimately resulted in a great product. By the time of the prequels he was surrounded by yes men who just worshipped at the altar of Lucas so he wasn't challenged or checked by them. This results in a prequel trilogy which still has the vision and heart of the OT, but with much more wooden dialogue and poor execution of scenes and technology.

The dialogue works in those situations, like duel of the fates has very simple dialogue which works because Anakin and obi wan are basically fighting their closest friend and that's heart breaking. Not to mention the physical tax of the fight itself. However when those conditions aren't present, that type of dialogue feels unnatural

This is something I first noticed with Adam Sandler, talented comedians often need a leash. They need someone to pull them back and wind it down to focus, trim the fat, reduce down the sauce, sauté, sweat, and put it together. They are a fantastic ingredient, there needs to be a cook. Thor love and thunder is that, a fantastic set of ingredients thrown into a bot and left to boil. You have articulated the difference very well between doing something for comedy and using comedy to do something.

I think that's unfair. Adam Sandler was accused of being a onetrick pony back in the day - people certainly weren't accusing him of running wild or needing to be on a leash. Sure, some of those comedies didn't turn out great, but some of them are still really funny to this day. And to Sandler's credit he broke out of archtype a bit, he did dramatic work and in fairness it wasn't bad. His latest one the Gem dealer one is apparently *very* good. Waititi can do that dry Kiwi/Aussie/British humour exceedingly well; What We do in the Shadows (movie) is utterly fantastic; and it shows he truly is capable of subtletly & nuance. One does have to wonder if he was simply star struck, or whether, like Rings of Power, the studio put its thumbprint on the production.

@@anaryl like I said Adam sander is incredibly talented, I was not putting down Adam. I love Adam Sandler. But when you look at the films that he had full control off (his Netflix deal films are great examples) they just aren’t as good. I am not saying these people are not skilled I am saying that they are better when they let others bring out that skill and refine it down. Which is true of most people by the way, no one is at their best using only their own skills. They can even be in charge if they let people in to better their work. I chose Sandler as an example because in this film (Thor love and thunder), like many of Sandler disliked films, in isolation each joke is funny and well done but placed together in the service of the film itself it doesn’t function well. Because yes each is funny and well done but no one was focused on if the funny joke was fit to the purpose of the film. So you need that guy to pull it back and they need to listen to that guy.

I can't get over how he was even allowed to handle Ragnarok, essentially the Norse apocalypse and death of their gods. There's nothing comedic about Ragnarok in the original myths or the slightly less dark Marvel comics. The only reason anyone even survives Ragnarok in the comics is because Thor hanged himself from the world tree to find out about Those Who Sit Above in Shadow and break the cycle of Ragnarok, and Loki does some other shit to have the souls of part of the Asgardian population go into new bodies on Earth or something. I don't remember exactly. Anyways, Those Who Sit Above in Shadow are essentially the gods of the gods who cause Ragnarok to happen again and again in a cycle, so they can feed off the energy from the deaths. There could have been a horrible existential crisis about the gods, their purposes, their fates, and all that. They all die to only relive a slightly different but similar life again that will always lead to the same horrible death, never really learning from their mistakes or resolving the problems that cause the war to happen over and over. The only reason Thor does something drastically different from the many lifetimes he faced Ragnarok before was because of the influence of mortals.

After reading this comment I realized that Sam Raimi should have directed this movie and Taika should have directed Multiverse of Madness. Think about the insanity Taika would have let loose on Multiverse of Madness and how much he could play it up. Especially since the movie is called Multiverse of Madness. You'd think weird multiverse shenanigans would be the main focus of the story. Sure Wanda was set up to be the villain, but they wasted the whole multiverse is in danger premise as it never felt like it strayed deep enough into it. Replace the different universes the movie spends significant time in with different countries and the variants as new characters (which technically they are) and its basically the same story. Even if the end product doesn't make much sense like how Love and Thunder turned out, Taika would ultimately be making a movie about the multiverse. Only a true idiot would be unable to make a semi-connected skit comedy special when dealing with the multiverse as a set up. It doesn't have to be super cohesive, but the multiverse is a crutch Taika defiantly needed if he wanted to make that film with the same thought process he had while writing Love and Thunder. As for Raimi directing Love and Thunder, he would have definitely amped up the horror elements if given the chance. I am not sure how he would handle Gorr and Jane together, but if he only had to adapt one of the story lines instead of both he'd probably make something closer to what you were looking for. At the very least we'd probably see the God Butcher actually butchering a bunch of gods, though I don't think Disney would be too happy about that much violence. I'm not too sure what you'd be looking for when it comes to the drama side of things though. Everybody seems to have their own definition what makes drama, and you're more than welcome to think my idea of swapping the directors is nonsense.

That's really sad because this is the most boring, unimaginative take ever. Like, his while premise is completely wrong. Yes, it was entertaining when it first happened, but he goes way too hard on the Loki aspect, the actual reason for that scene was to recap important parts from the previous movie for people who had forgotten about Dark World, or hadn't seen it. This scene has the same effect, explaining new Asgard for people who didn't see Ragnorok.

Interesting how this and the scene comparison of "Ghostbusters" 1984 and "Ghostbusters" 2016 both have Melissa McCarthy and, both scenes have a distinct time difference with the worst scene taking twice as long for little to no payout... with Melissa McCarthy in them.
