Why Thor Love And Thunder Sucked - A Scene Comparison

So most of us seem to agree that Love and Thunder was a terrible movie, and I think there's one scene that pretty much explains why. Join me as I compare two scenes from two Thor movies, to understand the difference between good and bad writing.

It's funny how Wonder Woman 1984 and Thor Love and Thunder were both written by their directors after directing 2 successful films that were written by other people.

Same with Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams. Good directors. Not as good writers. Or at least not in that particular genre. They are two very different talents and it is strange to me that producers keep tapping directors to write their own movies.

@@choreomaniac JJ and Johnson have both done amazing Sci Fi films. The problem was that they were given a foreign property and both decided to go in a completely original direction from what came before, instead of following the treatments given by George Lucas himself. Kathleen Kennedy was also at fault as she’s normally just a person who manages the harder parts of filmmaking so that the director can make his movie. It’s the reason why Spielberg was able to pump out so many high budget original films back in the eighties, I mean you can see the quality improvement after 1941 with Raiders of the lost Ark. So you basically had an uncreative Hollywood producer scouting out Hollywoods “most popular young directors”, in other words the directors that make movies that are easily marketable to audiences, to continue a franchise without the original creators input. I mean it was doomed to fail.

He’s a talented writer and director but had no intention to make a good faithful Star Wars movie, let alone one in continuity with Force Awakens. He deliberately set to deconstruct the saga and the previous movie, a terrible plan for the bridge film of a trilogy and the eighth entry in one of the most beloved stories in film history.

Writer /Director is ALWAYS a red flag and almost always a bad idea. They are different jobs requiring different talents and combing them has the compound negative effect of removing a system of checks and balances or adding a point of failure.

One thing that always bothered me about that scene is - here is Thor, the literal most famous person in Asgard and he shows up after a long absence and no one makes a big deal or even notices him?

Well I took that feature as being part of Loki's manipulation of Asgard in pretending to be Odin. The play and audience reaction serves to show us, the audience, that Loki was able to spin a particular narrative where Loki was the hero of Asgard and not Thor. The fact that nobody makes a big deal about Thor is done on purpose to show us that something's amiss here. When the lady in the audience puts her hand on Thor, his reaction is the same as our reaction, which is "Don't you recognise that's Thor?!". That's the whole point.

Compare it to the comics where when ever Thor shows up people will wave or shout his name. Guy's single handedly the foremost front line warrior the realm depends. And these people have been around. Most of them are thousands of years old, as he is, they know him, they are not living under a rock and only just moved to the big city last week.

How the MCU deals with humor these days is a major issue. Phases 1-3 dealt with it in a way in which the humor was more of an ice breaker or a light hearted exchange between the characters that never messed with or ruined a serious plot. The story was still every bit as serious as it was needed to be. Phase 4 treats humor like its a necessity in every show or movie irrespective of what the story requires. Thor love and thunder is a film which requires a very serious approach given it's context. Instead Waititi was like "make Thor funny hehehehe"

Disney, Fiege and whoever saw that the humor was well-recieved and thought to themselves, "You can never have too much of a good thing." Thus, they demanded more and more comedy until MCU movies became toothless trash where serious moments can never be allowed to linger without someone making an "oh so random, lol" joke. It's like a person who loves chocolate cake. Yeah, chocolate cake is great, but you can't have it every single day for with every single meal.

One of the major reasons Curse of the Black Pearl was such a great movie was that it was so tightly edited and written. Even the most seemingly pointless action scene was packed with character or world building moments. Shame Disney went from that to just giving a random guy a camera and thinking they can glue something together later.

Another small complaint I had with this movie is that the Guardians weren't in it for a long time. According to the advertisements, it felt like they were going to have a much larger role, but it didn't turn out to be that way. It felt like I was being advertised a different movie than what I got.

I found the elevator scene in Thor: Ragnarok an example of a Taika scene done well. The development between Thor and Loki really hits an all time high in the brief dialogue they have in the elevator to the hangar. Thor acknowledges his brother, Loki for who he is and not what Thor hopes/wants him to be, but expresses his unconditional love for his brother regardless. The scene ends with Thor actually putting that new character development immediately into action by planting the shock device on Loki. Thor knew that after expressing his love to his brother that Loki would likely try something cheeky, showing further that he won't be tricked so easily as in the past. This scene has 2 jokes. One after a long, digestible pause in the elevator to break the cathartic moment with their "Get help" bit. This bit shows that sense of brotherly love their relationship has desperately needed and I think fits well since they give the dialogue some time to breath before whipping it out. The other, when Thor actually gets the best of Loki ( and some payback) by unexpectedly planting that shock device on him. Both of these jokes were funny (imo) and actually expressed the recent growth Thor has gone through as a character. Love and Thunder takes the goofyness from those jokes but removes the substance that respects the characters and story being told. They could have easily pulled this off with characters such as Gorr (if they had put decent time into his backstory) and Jane Foster who had a lot of potential for character growth. *sigh* I guess not :/

So the guy who murdered thousands of people and tried to wage genocide and killed some poor guy Thor thought to be his friend (Coulson) is now redeemed all of a sudden and acts like a silly sidekick. Yeah, makes total sense for both to act that. For Thor to just accept Loki as his silly sidekick and for Loki to have a change of heart. I seriously cannot understand how anyone who likes Ragnaschlock can have problems with Dumb and Thunder. They are one and the same. I would argue Ragnajoke is worse because it does more character assassination.

Taika is the perfect example of what people refer to as an “ideas man”. Someone who is good for throwing out tons of options in the writing room but you’re not going to want him in charge because he is going to want to do all those ideas at once regardless of if they fit together or not.

Idea guys can also be good writers, it just takes some talent and know how in regards to what good writing actually is. The main perk of idea guys is that they have a creative spark that other types of people might not necessarily have, making them useful in a team of people in need of ideas but with the talent to handle other important roles. Without that kind of talent and just being a huge wellspring of ideas, an idea guy in the writers chair just ends up cobbling together a tangled mess of ideas vaguely resembling a story. The same person, but more well disciplined on how to write will still be coming up with all the same ideas, but will have a better grasp on which ones to keep and how to satisfyingly tie them into the story. Overall though, idea guys are better off being part of a team rather than the main guy in charge of a project. Their input is valuable, but it should be up to people much more professional at writing and editing to decide which of their ideas to use and how to use them. If they do get an opportunity to write a whole script, it should be subject to peer review and edit by other talented writers before it goes into any sort of actual movie production.

The theater scene could have been great if Taika put a bit more thought into the scene. The theater scene could have explained why Jane is able to wield the hammer. What I imagine is that the play elaborates on what Hela did to Thor's hammer. They could show how Hela secretly collected the hammer before being teleported to Asgard. While she was ruling Asgard, Hela works on a spell to restore the hammer for herself. She succeeds, but places a new spell on the hammer. The spell only allows those who are worthy of being queen of Asgard to lift Mjolnir. This would better explain why Jane is able to lift the hammer in the movie. Jane posses the right traits to lead Asgard to its previous glory at Thor's side.

David McDevitt I’ve seen some folks say he wasn’t being serious but still it’s a low blow considering how overworked a lot of these VFX guys are and how little direction they get from the directors with how they want their effects done. But that’s modern Marvel. Let’s build the set pieces first and then write them. Horrible method and also asking for unreasonable changes at the last minute as opposed to when the effects are being built.

He's a collaborator. That means he needs foils. You nailed it in your rundown of him. He's always been part of a writer's room, and as the writers room joker he's hugely valuable. Putting him alone at the front was the mistake. If he wasn't such a narcissist I'd think he just needs a partner, but what he probably needs is a handler who is also the lore guy ("no Taika, you can't do that. It doesn't make sense, from a lore standpoint or in the real world.")

To defend Taika a little bit, when you get as big as him you often find yourself surrounded by enamored yes-men who don't feel it's their place to give the famous director feedback, even if he really needs it. It apparently happened to George Lucas on the Star Wars prequels too, no one was willing to give him proper feedback, even when he asked for it. I remember seeing a James Gunn interview where he mentions he has a few close writer friends he bounces his ideas off of, who aren't afraid to tell him when they think one of his ideas stink. It's probably why he's one of the few current directors who can put out shows of consistently good quality. (He also believes in finishing scripts before beginning filming, something Disney has not been doing, and it shows.)

I was hoping Thor would have an emotional outburst about how much loss he's endured, particularly in the scene where Jane tells him her condition. I really thought he'd start breaking down or have an outburst because even though he's just barely gotten back to a "healthy" mindset (which I don't think is true given he's just avoiding everything outside of fighting), this is yet another significant loss that he's being confronted with. I mean, he really can't catch a break. Since Thor 2, I think he's suffered significant losses in nearly every movie. It's honestly super tragic, and while we got to see how affected Thor was in End Game, I don't think we really got to see his recovery. He just got a slight bit of catharsis when they defeated Thanos. So I was expecting him to FINALLY have that in this movie when confronted by Jane's situation. But... Nothing. We got like a sympathetic sigh and a frown. Also, was I the only one who thought Thor should be confused by "cancer"? I mean, why would he already know the implications of cancer? I'd assumed that was a purely human affliction, one he hasn't encountered before, so unless he and Star Lord have been having serious heart to hearts about their pasts, I just didn't think this made sense.

Like you said, Taika Waititi is definitely a very talented and creative film maker (I think Jo Jo Rabbit is one of the best films of the last decade) but he definitely phoned this one in. It's not a bad movie, it's just kind of a goofy nothing of a movie that criminally wasted an amazing villain portrayed by probably the most talented actor to enter the MCU since Robert Redford in Winter Soldier.

I watched it about a week ago and while watching it, I feel like watching a series of videos on youtube while reading something on a book. I never got emotionally engaged, jokes are too forced, and everything seems to hold no consequences. When it ended I was like "Huh, so that movie ended" I never though about it again except for thinking about how bad it was.

Really, this is a good lesson for anyone making any sort of published media period. If you're going to tell a story, you need to know the purpose of each scene, what it accomplishes, and how effectively it accomplishes it. If your first response to being asked if your scene accomplishes one of those three things is, "Well, that's too strict of a criteria," you aren't making something for others to enjoy, you're making something purely for yourself. And yes, I've talked to many an aspiring writer, and when I ask if their scene either develops a character or progresses the plot, they gave push back to that.

What I find especially interesting is Chris H's statement - that he will no longer join a movie simply because of the director in charge of it. Poor guy, he got burned hard with this movie. I mean, look how RDJ walked away with almost godlike status, then you have the last 2 thor movies making him look like a clown when he could have been developed into something much better. Interesting how your scene comparison review comes up on my feed a day after struggling to finally watch the movie itself. I think I slogged through 45 minutes before just giving up and watching something else. Too right about the 'play' scene, but the rest of what I watched felt as if this scene never ended. All of what I watched seemed like a bad local theatre play, where the leads are given to relatives of the donors that help keep the 15 seat theatre open. And the writing! Imagine Thor having to explain to a supposedly dying Sif that she can't get to Valhalla by dying on the battlefield, but that she has to die in the actual battle and her being surprised by this! No self-respecting Viking would ever need this explained, let alone the Norse gods they worshipped. If she dies from her wounds after the battle, she'd be given a proper sending to Valhalla by having her body cremated on a longboat. This information isn't even difficult to read about so the entire scene was another waste of time and dialogue, leading to nothing. As I said, I surrendered after 45 minutes of this drivel. How the movie ends, I have no idea. Nor do I care. I sure hope Marvel rights the longboat very soon, before they actually make the DC movies seem good by comparison.

I've talked about it before that I think this movie should have been 2. They should have done one where Gorr was the villain, and it was a serious movie, and another without Gorr, and make it a funny silly Thor movie. EITHER of those would have been so much more successful than trying to combine the 2. Christian Bale did an amazing job with Gorr, and he deserved a more serious movie. But on the other hand, the interactions with Thor/Jane/Mjölnir/Stormbreaker are great, and It could have been a fun movie of its own, or even just a short. If they did one before Gorr where he met with Jane again and had the relationship issues with the weapons, then progressed into a more serious Love and Thunder it would have been fantastic. I also wish they would have stuck with the original idea of Zeus being a sort of mentor for Thor. They could've used that for a more serious version.

Taika Waititi is like a guy who has successfully built and designed houses. With Thor: Ragnarok, he was given the opportunity to oversee the construction of a well-designed skyscraper. After rising to the challenge (pun intended), he met with his bosses who inexplicably announced, "Now we're going to let YOU design a skyscraper." Instead of admitting that he had no idea how to do that, Taika just started laughing his ass off and stacking a bunch of shiny and expensive materials as high as he could with no rhyme or reason. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony for what had essentially become a skyscraper-sized pile of garbage, the public openly expressed its disapproval of the misguided and self-indulgent monstrosity which now marred the city skyline. Learning nothing from the abysmal failure, Taika's bosses have allegedly rehired him to design a second skyscraper, this time in the Star Wars district. Not surprisingly, citizens are fleeing the city in droves.

That scene in Thor: Ragnarök also showed that Thor was no fool. He see's through the visage and can tell it's Loki. This sets it up nicely for when later in the movie Thor see's through another of Loki's tricks and gets the upper hand on him.

Asgardians have intellects that human beings can't comprehend. I know you have to create a character within the bounds of what people can realistically believe, but Asgardians are galaxy-spanning aliens that created wonders. The average Asgardian is roughly 90-100 times stronger than Captain America and significantly more intelligent, but they are portrayed as being as meek and feeble as humans. That's why I've always had a problem with how movies present superhumanly powerful beings. They would move so quickly and create such destruction that humans wouldn't even be able to see them. They would appear as a blur to normal humans. Even in Star Wars, the Jedi and Force-users are superhumanly fast and superhumanly strong, because of their connection with the force, yet they are portrayed as regularly-adept human sword-fighters and nearly as slow. An olympian human fencer or master human swordsman wouldn't even be able to react to a Jedi attempting to strike them down. That's how fast they are.

Possibly a controversial opinion, but I think they should've brought back the director of Thor 2 (Alan Taylor), or even Kenneth Branagh from Thor 1. Both would've worked better for the more serious tone of Thor 4, from Thor having to deal with his own depression, the god butcher, Jane's cancer etc. Both directors have shown they do a good blend of humour and serious, ie "congratulations, you just decapitated your grandfather". Or, to be really adventurous bring in Edgar Wright, who was meant to do Antman 1.

The problem with repeating scenes in a comedy sequel is that jokes are generally way less funny the second time around. In Raganrok the play scene was basically quite funny (as well as the various other purposes it fulfilled as described in the video), but repeating it in L&T.. well it's just like hearing the same joke again - the joke is old and not really funny, but this time it doesn't even fulfill any other purpose either. I'm surprised that someone like Waititi who has made their name with humourous films thought this would work.

One of the biggest problems with L&T was that it basically rehashed all the same stuff we’ve seen before in slightly different ways. - The Immigrant song used twice in Ragnarok was used 4 times here - Gorr is basically a watered down Thanos using some magic macguffin to achieve his goal of mass murder in an instant - The Zeus post credits scene is basically identical to the Guardians 2 post credits scene - The theatre piece being rehashed for jokes - Korg fake dies like Loki (but isn’t nearly as emotionally charged) - Korg is just being Korg. He was fine as a side character with a few minutes of screen time total, but he quickly gets annoying as a main character - Thor becoming a dad like Tony - Thor needing to “figure out who he is” for like the third time now - Getting the thunderbolt because it’s a powerful weapon that can help stop Gorr like when Thor went to make Stormbreaker in IW Also, all the characters felt like parodies of themselves. Pretty much the entire movie felt like if the Team Thor shorts were turned into a theatrical movie. Nothing but jokes, turning Thor into an idiot, etc. Also, Taika really seems to hate Sif and the Warriors Three. He killed off the three instantly with no regard for Thor’s emotional response, he brought Sif back in a comic accurate costume just to cut off her arm and write her out of the movie, and I feel like it was all just to make room for Valkyrie and Korg (which is just an excuse for him to talk more and more in these movies). I’m pretty sure the only reason Sif wasn’t killed in Ragnarok was because of scheduling conflicts with the actor. And so much of the dialogue was basically just exposition and describing the plot like they’re reading script notes or something. It’s that one line Korg had in Ragnarok where he analyzed the loss of Mjolnir and applied to basically everyone. To me, Thor’s arc should have ended with him becoming king. It’s what his entire journey was leading up to, so to basically have that thrown away in favour of more wacky adventures feels like a character assassination.

At least the Team Thor sketches went for 2-3 minutes. They're funny and entertaining because they don't have/need a crazy story and the comedy was a hit and run, not a constantly smash you on the head for 2 hours. Watching characters do goofy shit for the sake of goofy shit is great for a short spin off like Team Thor but you can base a FEATURE LENGTH film on "hahaha so randem XD lol". Ragnarok worked because while there was a lot of goofy shit, it was balanced carefully with seriousness, had stakes, the characters developed meaningfully and stayed serious when necessary for the story. No one is going to take your plot seriously if your characters don't even take it seriously.

The theatrical play scene could've worked if we see Jane watch it but we didn't, idk why they didn't do that. That way it tells Jane what happened to the hammer and she her self goes to that spot alone by herself.(advances the plot) Where also would make her more sympathetic (as a character development?) towards Thor instead of being stingy at the get go about who left and what not, seeing how Thor went through a lot, and also it would contextualize and give more meaning to hear death when she fade away just like Odin did. I dunno what went on in the comics, but to me, in this movie, I just really couldn't help but laugh at him. He just kinda came across as a needlessly racist (my god was bad, so all gods bad), and way way too edgy character who was barely saved by the acting.

Taika Waititi's failure with Thor: Love and Thunder was well explained in one of Mauler's video's: give the man a good script and he's great with his little humorous touch-ups of that script. Let him do the entire script and it almost becomes a slap-stick movie with a rapid-fire of bad jokes.

The DS film is much clever here. There is a macguffin that can defeat Thanos, but using (or searching for) it has dire consequences. So it's pretty understandable someone might have known about it but just didn't want to use it.

One of the reasons I like about Thor in MCU is he's goofy, but he's serious at the right moments. However it doesn't look like it on Love and Thunder where they try to squeeze as many jokes as they can. On which the movie could be a lot better already just to cut the jokes in half and just focus on plot progress.
