I would be so happy if I could even get that many peas. Here above you we can't really plant in January but we still had some temps in the 80's this week.

I love my English peas. I’m in Tennessee on the plateau where it’s colder than everywhere else (except the mountains) I plant in middle march. By June they’re ready to pick It’s just that you have to grow a million plants to get enough for the freezer.

I was just out there looking at my peas this morning thinking the same thing... I'm in 7a and just keep marching my planting date back, crossing my fingers, being happy with the pods I get, and using them mostly to fix nitrogen in the soil for the next crop.

We plant 2 rows growing up 1, 18' long trellis fence. 1 on either side of the same fence. Seeded every 2"s in each row staggered seeded from each other side to side. We only get 2 flushes of pods but, if planted a month before our squash and pie pumpkins, the Peas are all done just in time to train them up the same trellis. We also have 3 double sided 8' rows in a 4x8' raised bed. Last year we put up 2+, 1gallon ziplock bags in the freezer. This all works out very well because in zone5, Maine, if planted by last week of April, our Peas are all done by end of June, just in time to start starving our Japanese Beetles, that arrive July 1st.

I know the first row had sprouting issues, but still a good harvest. Some varieties I grow do better than others and it changes year to year sometimes. I plant peas super dense, like half inch or inch between seeds, helps get more harvest

@@sislertx peas love to be planted dense and do better and you get way more plants so even if harvest is light there’s still tons. Being that they come and all being densely planted help with some support for each other. Still have to trellis or tie up somehow

It would be nice to grow sweet peas in May and June but if you live in the south it better be field peas or cowpeas as most people call them if you want to eat peas. My peas are setting fruit now so maybe I'll at least get a couple of meals from them before they are toast. Fresh from the garden sweet peas is so much better than the ones you buy in the store there's no comparison.

Thanks for this! I just put my Sugar Snap peas in on the 15th. Sugar Snaps increase your total yield because you eat them pod and all! I’m planning to sow a fall crop too around the beginning of August, this is the Toronto area.

I grew snow peas for the first time last year and had them coming out of my ears.Growing them again this year, along with snap peas and shelling peas. I tried to pick heat tolerant verities because like you, the heat prevents us from growing many cool weather crops. Hopefully, we get a good harvest from all of them. Love me some peas...

As a young boy I had a chore list every day in the summer. Clean the house, wash dishes and clothes, weed garden and mow yard as needed and sometimes cook super. I also remember setting on the porch or watching tv and shelling field peas for weeks, and if I didn’t do my chores I got a beaten. I’m grown and I still do the same things on my own.

Maybe try a different variety of Pea next time. I'll agree that some variety of Peas can't take the heat, but there are different varieties that actually do better in warmer climates. The Green arrow peas we grew last year did an amazing job when it got hot. Where am I? Georgia. I was picking peas in the 90's and the plants were still putting on blooms. Just saying. Also, if you got a whooping for picking peas wrong, that sounds to me like an abusive family. I can't ever remember My parents or grandparents whooping me for anything I did in the garden with them. Even when I accidently stepped on the watermelon vines that my PawPaw grew from seed in a field he hand tilled over 2 acres. Guess he figured if they would have whooped us, that might stop us from wanting anything to ever do with Gardening.

Spanking a child is correcting the behavior before they grow up and become some of those coddled young people screaming in the streets to kill the Jews, blocking traffic on freeways, etc! In the south a spanking is called a whooping and it taught us valuable lessons that carried us through life and it's definitely NOT abuse. Beating a child is abuse and the person doing it should be in jail but I never got a whooping I didn't deserve and I respect my parents for loving me enough to correct me, and I raised three sons that say the same.

I'm frustrated with my peas too. I'm in north GA and it is too cold to plant in Jan. Feb is a true gamble. So I sowed seeds March 1. I'm just now getting flowers but it hit mid 80s degrees this weeknso I don't know what will happen. GA just doesn't have many days in the 70s. We just jump from cold to hot! I use containers so I will put them in shade to see if I can get some peas. Maybe next year I will start them inside in January.

I'm in West Central Georgia and in the same situation. Planted 6 containers of sugar snap peas in early March. They are just now starting to bloom and now it's in the 80s so I don't know if I'll even get any peas. Same thing happened last year. I got about 6 pea pods total. I've about decided it just isn't worth the effort.
