A little stretch is ok, like -10-20 on width but nothing more for something that’s going on public roads. I can’t in good conscience drive on something that could cause an accident if a tire doesn’t hold bead or I skid because my rim went to the tarmac. I enjoy seeing stretch as “auto art” at shows but hope people trailer them home....

Isn't the whole point of running a wider wheel is to have a larger foot print for better traction, stretching tires just looks like you couldn't afford the right size or you just look like an idiot that can't order the right size wheel.

Mild stretch is good, but if you have to trailer the car to the show because its stretched so far it cant be driven over a rough patch in the road for risk of de-beading then, no. I am waiting on my first set of stretch tires on 3sdms that I got from FI but I am balancing performance and aesthetics. While the wheel is about 1.5" wider than stock at 8.5" I'm still running the stock width tire at 225, this way my contact patch is not decreased and my already existing struggle to grip at launch is not impacted. You need to perform, but look good doing it, thats how I roll. And about the origin, I'll agree it was the Euro scene, if you look at a Eurotuner or Performance VW mag from the late 90 or 2000s, they are all over the pages, though now its much more extreme variants.

The tire stretch is one thing, as long as the tire won't de-bead flying down the highway, thus endangering your fellow motorists with an accident caused by "scene creds" . The real problem is stretched tires coupled with extreme negative camber, essentially causing the car to ride on a contact patch the same size as a mountain bike tire, literally 3000-4000 lbs of vehicle flying down the freeway at 75 mph with the handling and stopping power of a Barbie Huffy bicycle. If you wanna run a stretch setup for fitment, more power to you if the tires will stay on the wheels, especially if you're keeping your car under 40 mph, and at the Walmart car meet on the weekend. Do the rest of us a favor and stay off the freeways, most especially if you run a bunch of negative camber. Simple physics = logic.
@86surge905 жыл бұрын
stretched tire fitment is the ultimate way to go to make your ride pop, its the last and ultimate bling factor one can do to show off their ride. Of course you want to do it right so that it looks as if its riding on wheels and not rubber, although that s2k was doing too much. and its not for every particular car such as you definitely won't see it on a car used for the track. And I doubt it serves a function for drifting otherwise we would've been seeing it on formula drift cars (unless that extra sidewall stiffness is not allowed). In short, a little bit of tire stretch on oversized wheels looks good on a lowered car modified with the purpose of form over function.

Find the details for your current wheel, specifically the bolt pattern i.e. 4x108 - any wheels with the same bolt pattern will fit, space providing... Remember that offset numbers are opposite to what you might think, i.e. ET10 sticks out further than ET35!

Naa I heard it was drifters in 80's Japan who started it.. something with slip angles and tyre wall strength??
@Grum19835 жыл бұрын
Matt Cannon having a stretched tire makes the side wall less flexible (stiffer) which is bad for grip, drift cars don’t need grip as they like to make the tires lose grip quicker making it easier to initiate a drift and keep the drift going. You won’t see any stretched tires on a proper race car, or rally car.
