“About 50 per cent of companies have party subcommittees” This sentence summarizes all the reasons of China's development. Capitalist entrepreneurship combined with a communist sense of discipline and compromise towards the others with also a strong patriotic belief and a remain to tradition. Whether you like China or not, this is something Lenin himself envisioned for a socialist country to succeed.

The Communist Party of China of today, is not a political party, rather it's a ruling organization, a sort of social class within society that is based on Meritocracy. The idea is to have representatives from all levels and all sectors of society, so that decisions made within the party can be representative of the entire society of China. This in a way is very similar to the Imperial Bureaucracy of Imperial China, where a ruling class of educated people from all walks of life, join the Imperial civil service through a rigorous exam called Keju. Kind of interesting how the CPC system have so much similarities with the Imperial system. Perhaps it's the same system just under a new management. Or maybe it's the result of "Socialism with Chinese characteristics", many people might not know, the Chinese characteristics are Confucianism and Legalism, of which President Xi is a pretty big follower of Legalism.

It doesn't matter what party you support, there will always be people in power controlling those who aren't. Meanwhile in other side, the democratic system also stabilize corruption. From the beginning, to have the chance for being the candidate (both on legistatives & excecutives house), ones needs to spend equal to hundreds thousands till millions US dollars. When they got the position, they need to get back their "investment" plus "make profit as much as possible" at any cost. That's how corruption work in "democratic" country and it is like never ending saga. Indonesia is the best example for that.

Exactly: most aspects of Chinese economy/industry are controlled by the CCP. As such, in many cases you have to join the CCP to participate in economic activity, even if you disagree with their policies and ideology. Just be careful to not voice your disagreements out loud, and your paycheck and family will remain safe ;)

To be honest, the party's communist principles weren't helping the country out of poverty at all. It started on it's path to greater wealth and power by adopting some Capitalist Market tendencies in the 1970s with visits by Nixon's administration, such as allowing private businesses & allowing them compete for profit on their own while the government held the reins in things got too out of their control.

The last comment "its fraught relationship" is totally unfair. China is making many friends with its Belt and Road Initiative around the world. The BRI is a win-win project for developing countries as infrasture is built and funded by China for many countries under terms that are far superior to that offered by the IMF and World Bank. If there is any tension along the BRI, these are engineered by the CIA/NED. Unfortunately the US has the most powerful propaganda machine in the world, supported by their twisted, corrupt mainstream media.
