As a comic illustrator, I can definitely say that when you find a hand gesture that you like, it works its way into practically every panel. MY personal hand gesture is an open hand with the fingers splayed but the two middle fingers pressed together. It's very hard to do in real life, but it's easy to draw and ... I just like the look.

@@khodexus4963 Thanks, just edited it. Symbology is indeed the study of symbols, while symbolism is the representation of a concept through symbols. But just to make clear to Scott (if he ever reads this), the suggestion was NOT aimed at the S chevron, but to the revealing gesture of opening the shirt with a(ny) uniform under it. Although Superman as the first superhero made it popular, Lee Falk's The Phantom did it first.

I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone."

The gesture Spidey does makes sense if you think about the double tap he has to do to shoot the webs, heuses his ring and middle fingers at slightly delayed timing so he doesn't have to do an actual double tap. One taps slightly behind the first and the index and pinky are used sort of like sights on a gun.

Ronnie James Dio claimed to be the person who introduce the horns gesture to heavy metal. He said that he got it from his grandmother, who in turn got it from the old country, where it was used to ward off the evil eye (demons, sickness). I usually think of it with the back of the hand to the viewer, but when he did it, it was palm forward, like the Hindu gesture that Scott comments on. And now that's a thing you know.

Great vid! Always knew about Spider-Man’s finger gestures, but not Dr. Strange. I think it’s awesome that you spent time focusing on what seems a trivial point of comic artistry, but we often see how small details make the whole image come together time and time again.

It makes sense when you actually think about it: Spideys spidergesture resembles a spider. Dr. Strange's hand gesture resembles the Satanic/Wikia symbol for devil, Devil of course being associated with *magic.*

Ditko wasn’t Jewish, he was of Slavic descent, and the symbol associated with rock music (which has the thumb placed over the middle two fingers, not extended away from the palm) can be traced back to Ronnie James Dio taking over as the second lead singer of Black Sabbath. Dio wanted something to do with his hands during concerts that would fit the darker tone of the music they performed (compared to what he was singing as the lead singer of Rainbow) so he drew on something from his Italian (Sicilian?) heritage. In the folk magic traditions of the region, that gesture was thought to both ward off and control the Evil Eye.

It also goes to show how effortlessly flexible Spideys powers make him, it's not an incredibly easy hand gesture, whenever I try to do it my pinky always curves in a bit and I feel like Spider-Man accentuates it to a level that's even more difficult for a normal person to pull off.

I guarantee he has no idea what objectivism actually is about, nor that the "selfishness" referred to in the philosophy is significantly different than what the average person thinks of. I mean, I've got my own disagreements with the philosophy myself, but it's by no means immoral or evil.

@@ThatGastrodon I just don't get why comics need to be political statements now, sure there's been underlining themes in old comics, but not how it is today where the politics are first are for most, and always for the left. Ditko would be disappointed if he kept up on what they did to his character
