I have no love for the corporate decisions made during the 86 movie’s production, but I have much love for what it did for the franchise. It taught Hasbro the value of their characters through the audience’s outcry over Optimus and others’ death and introduced so much that’s become standard for the franchise. That, and it’s got a bangin’ soundtrack and solid animation.

Couldn't agree more. I have such a love hate relationship with this movie. I hated it because it broke every TF TV show rules on bots taking damage with resultant deaths when they could have just simply had characters no longer "appear" in the show to introduce the '86 toy line. But absolutely loved how fun the movie was and the slamming sound track

It was rare for a kids film to truly kill off characters we care about. Transformers the movie and Joe comics never talked down to me as a kid, and I think that’s why they still resonate with me at nearly 40.

The thing I like to commend Transformers: the Movie for is that they didn't just phone it in. In an era where a TV cartoon-made-into-movie meant "120 minutes you can divide into 5 20 minute episodes", the crew making it stepped it up and made a big screen film. The animation quality was a big step up. The music wasn't just the stock GI Joe riffs the show had played every episode prior. The storyline wasn't just another episode of the show, dragged out for an hour and a half. Everything about it shows enough care and effort to it. Even the celebrity stunt casting helps with that. Just compare it to something like Go-Bots: Battle of the Rock Lords, or even Sunbow/Hasbro's own GI Joe: the Movie and you can see something on a whole different level than those other cartoon movies.

There is a segment of fandom -- any fandom, really -- who wanted the thing that they loved since they were little kids to have grown up with them. In Transformers' case, that meant turning that thing that little cartoon about robots that turn into trucks and cars and planes and fight one another into a full blown war drama. And the '86 movie was the first time we got that. The stakes were higher, characters died and didn't come back (not right away at least.) And it allowed them view the whole thing in a more mature light. But while Hasbro would indeed largely acknowledge it as a mistake, they did notice the way the adult collectors loved it. So, Transformers and many other fandoms leaned into it. Event stories that always featured a bodycount. "No one was safe!" They'd brag! Never mind that with alien robots and superheroes, there were often any number of ways of bringing them back. As we well know from Hasbro backpedaling on Optimus Prime's death. But they kind of miss an important point. The reason why the deaths in Transformers: The Movie are so impactful is because we'd had two seasons of the cartoon to get to know Ratchet, Ironhide, Brawn, Prowl, Wheeljack, Cliffjumper, and of course Optimus, where we watched them survive countless battles. It was shocking! In the Bay movies, most of the casualties are glorified extras who we had little or no attachment to. Ironhide and Ratchet the only real exceptions because they at least survived the previous films. You can't mourn a character who seemingly was only created to die in the same film they were introduced. Even if they'd been given the names of legacy characters. And because we KNOW they only exist as glorified extras to die, we don't bother getting attached to any of them. Why bother when you know that the writers don't care about these characters beyond using them for canon fodder? The argument that I often heard about the human characters is that they are supposed our viewpoint characters into the world of the Transformers. The idea that kids and mainstream moviegoers would have a hard time accepting giant robots as the main characters and needed someone relatable to help them get into it. Okay, I can accept that in the first film or two. Or in early issues of a comic or episodes of a cartoon. But if you're done your job, at some point you should be able to move away from the human sidekick character and focus more on the Transformers themselves as the main characters. Keeping their human friends around as B and C plots. Daniel isn't there to introduce us to the world of the Transformers. He's there to show the passage of time from the series to the movie and establish a legacy. Spike, the Autobots' human companion is all grown up now, and this is his own son, because his family are still close friends with them. And while he has a subplot, it's not the main focus. He's not even with Hot Rod's group on his hero's journey into becoming Rodimus Prime! No, we don't watch Transformers to see the adventures of the Whitwicky family, or Sam and Mikala, or Charlie or Cade and their assorted families. Or Rad Carlos and Alexa, or Kicker! Those characters have their places, but they should never have been the main focus of the entire story. Jeez, sorry for my own rant here.

Hot Rodimus from radical delinquent into the chosen one the future leader of Cybertron/Autobots the matrix of leadership picks up a top class potential Supreme Commander as Rodimus Convoy/Prime. It was biggest adventure yet and faces Megatron was reformatted into dangerous Galvatron which Unicron influence in it. Optimus vs Megatron was epic for the last stand. Dare and The Touch are among the best rock n` roll music.

The reasons i think it so highly loved is the ambition of it. The balls that Hasbro had to kill off the previous years line while introducing new guys, the actual scale of thier world is expanded, the soundtrack is an absolute banger, and the animation was top notch for the time. Not to mention the sound design, the voice acting and the general pacing of the film. Yes, the script is a bit goofy in spots, but it is targeted at kids.

I have a feeling this was made because of what Lorenzo said. I will say that I only saw the '86 movie a few years ago. All the new characters that debuted in the movie are so ingrained in the franchise today.

I was 8 when the movie came out! Yes, I did see it - but to be honest I'd been told that it said Optimus would return at the end, I think - so I wasn't as devastated as some kids! I must have seen it quite late in the run, here in the UK maybe? When I got a bit older and watched it again, I saw the artistry in it. The opening sequence is particularly good. The shots of the moving parts inside of him and then the way his rings illuminate as he flies away really shows that he has 'consumed' Lithone. It has it's faults and it's very much a product of it's time, but it's still a great movie that has aged well.

Hey, I got the shout-out today! Yay! I still listen to the soundtrack periodically. Hell, I've even edited the tracks in Audacity to make them line up more to how they were presented in the movie. Vince DiCola's score is just fantastic. As for the perspectives the respective films have, that's a big deal too. The live-action series has been too obsessed with the human perspective of these alien machines, and while human-perspective characters have existed since G1, most of the time they were never the main focus.

I always thought the argument "its just to advertise new toys" just...isint an argument. Like in any sense. Fundamentally it doesnt engage with the material and "this is bad because of the intent" is simply an anti art sentiment. The movie, and transfomers as a whole, works because talented people who cared about making a decent product. You sell toys by investing people in what that toy is supposed to represent. Sandstorm remains one if my favourites not because they flashed his toy on screen over and over with "buy, buy, buy!" Over and over like parodies of these shows do, i like him because the ending of his episode was profound to me. genuine crativity sells shit. It takes just as much skill to create a world and characters for toys as it does to make a "passion project" no matter what the soul behind it is. The movie is beutifully animated, massively shifts the status quo, introduces all kinds of insane locales, tells a simple but effectively portrayed story, adds all kinds of lore, Unicron is a genuinely Top tier sci fi concept, actually letting characters die adds so much weight to these beings that hasbro literally didint see it coming. Weather we like the intent or not this movie essentially invented the larger TF mythos. Compare this to the gi joe movie from a year after thats not as well animated, not as strongly produced, wussed out of killing duke so lacks that oomf, and only shakes things up by adding new slightly different characters. No one cares about that movie anymore. 86 was made to sell toys, and they made sure it SOLD those toys.

I'd also add that the original movie knows it's a kids property but respects the younger audience. The curse words were a bad idea and adults weren't happy (I'm glad some of the recent home videos lets you choose), but it took the war story, added in a huge sci-fi element, but remembered that it's still for kids. Adult collectors and fans hate it when I say that, but I'm older than most of them so I don't care. Transformers wasn't created for 80s kids, it was created in the 1980s for kids. None of the Bay films cared about kids, yet still was somehow more immature in its attempts at humor. (To quote from this movie: this is bad comedy.") So it wasn't bogged down in cynicism but instead embraced things a child would like to see and does it without insulting their intelligence. It's more fun and imaginative as a result, and it's made by people who care about what they're making and its place in the franchise rather than using an IP for immature "adult" humor and flash without substance.

THIS. Thank you so much for saying this. I wish more of the Transformers community as un-self conscious about the “for kids” aspect as the movie is. I know Optimus is a beloved character and the backbone of the Transformers franchise, but I think bringing him back was a mistake. It undercuts the weight of his sacrifice in the movie and ultimately negates Hot Rod growing into Rodimus Prime as his successor. It would have been interesting to see what could have been if Hasbro stuck to their guns and kept with Rodimus as the leader for the remainder of G1. All Optimus all the time kind of dilutes the character and makes him feel too untouchable since we know he will always come back.

Speaking as someone from the UK, my experience and appreciation of TTF:TM goes beyond the film itself, as we in the UK also had TFUK's Target: 2006 story arc to hype us up into the stratosphere; not to mention the comic's various story arcs featuring Galvatron, Unicron, Rodimus Prime, Kup, Blurr, etc once the movie had long departed cinemas and was on its way to becoming a cult home release on VHS. It's a shame that TFUS did so little with the movie characters.

I personally loved the 1986 movie because they dared to go dark and kill off characters. I wish they didnt kill off so many but still it was also teaching how vile war actually is, it can take your loved ones in the blink of an eye. Taught me so much even if the primary reason was just to clear the shelves for new toys lol. @@harrisonwhaley7872 Also something else to factor, the movie doesn't exactly work plot wise without Optimus' death. Optimus Prime's last stand against Megatron has to happen in order for the Decepticons to retreat, and for Galvatron to happen, Optimus Prime's death is what leads us to getting information about the matrix in a way that feels like a natural consequence of the plot rather than exposition, Optimus' Deaths is essentially what causes the Autobots to be on the run the whole movie with fractured leadership, and Optimus Prime's death is required for Hotrod to have a proper hero's journey. What's funny for me is, because my viewing of Transformers G1 was so ridiculously sporadic due to it only playing on TV here in Australia back in the 90s (and my family wasn’t exactly living the high life, so we couldn't afford to just go out and biy the VHS tapes whenever we wanted) before school (which also meant I couldn't watch it unless I was ready for school before the show started), the only death that hit me in the movie was Optimus himself... and even then, that didn't hit me hard because, by that point, they were playing G2 by the time I saw the movie, so my kid brain went "wow. Optimus died. Good thing he comes back later on". So, no traumatising me because I already knew he'd be fine😅

at least for right now its impossible for transformers one or any newer transformers movie to beat out the nostalgia of 86 movie. Nostalgia is that powerful, It will be 10 years before people in their memories it can compete as long as its good of course. But if you want to judge it by its story, characters and arcs, animation smoothness and technical aspects and be unbiased in doing so then thats fair but this is a problem we are having in society today with so many franchises, expecting things to come out and compete with 80's and 90's nostalgia just wont happen and instead it leaves people disappointed.

3:17 I'm not sure I would call the way the movie got rid of the old cast cold and callous. Hasbro's motivation for killing off the characters, yeah sure, but in action I'm not sure I would agree. I would say it would be callous if characters were killed off with zero effort, without effecting anyone in the story, but people in the movie are shown effected by the deaths happening. Optimus Prime's death in particular is beautifully tragic and is the crux of the plot. The attack on the shuttle acts as a good horrifying indicator how powerful the Decepticons are, and Arcee dragging Windcharger and Wheeljack's body shows the horrors of the battlefield. The deaths in movie serve a narrative purpose along with being given proper attention, and with the task handed to the writers by hasbro I am not sure what more the writers could have done to make the deaths feel meaningful.

The 86 movie was my first exposure to transformers. I can sit down and watch it from start to end any time. I might of hit a limit to that a little bit due to my son watching it sooooooo much though when he was a bit younger. It might not be much of an original story, but it’s still better than what we have gotten from the live action movies for the most part. It’s probably one of the reasons I like heavy metal so much as well, that and my dad listens yo the genre as well.

I love the movie for 1 thing with all the cartoons on at the time it killed characters alot of cartoons were to childish . Then they gave Optimus an emotional death . It was dark , great music gave me Galvatron my favorite transformer . The Hot Rod story another favorite character. New enemies the quintesson's . Love it still watch it once a year too and I love the story a huge threat Unicron wanting to destroy everything and the matrix threw hot rod the only thing to stop it and save the day.

The 86 movie did a lot of fantastic things. A perfect storm of those positives you mentioned. I honestly will defend the story. yes it is template plot of the hero's journey, but that is a very good template. I think a better metric to to compare it to the plot of the average G1 episode and then the movie looks like Shakespeare. it is finally a story that really mattered. I will also defend the use if music in the live action films, really more the original trilogy. music definitely mattered, definitely aided in their memorability. Prime's arrival to mission city. the somber song when they show daybreak in Chicago, What I've Done by Linkin Park roaring into the credits that literally inspired memes. who used music better is a worthy debate because I think both did it well.

I think the reasons why the 86 movie is actually so good is because it actually has a story and characters. The live action films do not. I mean there is a SORT OF story but it's constantly contradicting itself which is weird because the plots are actually pretty basic. I could describe the plot of each movie in ONE SENTENCE! How does a ONE sentence plot manage to have more contradictions than there is plot? The 86 movie is actually a lot more complex because really there are about four different subplots all happening at the same time and they all work with each other rather than against each other. And then there's the characters... as mentioned the 86 movie basically kills off most of the original cast in the first ten minutes and if you didn't watch the show for the first 2 seasons up to that point you have no idea who any of those characters are except maybe Optimus Prime who has the most screen time dedicated to him. Everyone else is just sort of forgotten about. But it's also a movie that introduces a bunch of new characters and they're all pretty well developed characters for their first time ever being on screen. Arguably the worst character in the entire cast is Arcee who's entire personality is just being a girl but you still know who she is. I can't say that about any of the Live Action movie cast. I showed a friend who is a casual fan at best both the 86 movie and the first two live action films and he was able to follow the 86 movie just fine without a problem. During the live action films he was constantly asking me who everyone was because the movies don't even bother to tell you the name of over half of it's cast. The only reason I even know who any of them are is because I looked up the freaking cast list online before I even saw the movie otherwise I wouldn't know either. And in some cased even after looking it up and years later I still don't know most of the Constructicons names. The movie and Hasbro's toys have never even been consistent about how many Contructicons there even are in the movie. They aren't treated as characters to the point where their names really don't even matter because they're just slapped on for Trade Mark purposes anyway. There's also the action... because the 86 cast are so visually distinct it's easy to follow what's going on. With the live action films everyone looks basically the same. They don't have distinct appearances. Grindor is suppose to be a separate character from Blackout but they don't even have a distinct color scheme to tell them apart so I just treat them as the same character. Everyone looks like walking piles of scrap metal. So the majority of the time I have no idea what's happening.

As a kid from the 80's myself, growing up with G1 Transformers, I can see the point you're making to compare this movie to the CGI ones we got since 2007. It's not the same thing, I understand the fact that we see humans interact and be more the focus in these movies, aka Sam Witwicki and Mikeala, I also know that CGI is expensive, I'm not sure how better the movies would have been without human interaction, but they were on Earth, like it or not, the Transformers will have to deal with humans at some point like in G1. Was there too much focus on humans in the movies? Perhaps. They will never be perfect, no franchise ever is. I am looking forward to Transformers One and see how all this will unfold, no humans in this movie, which could be a good thing, but the next movies? Only time will tell.

Was the 1986 movie perfect? No. Far from it. Was it entertaining? Absolutely. It also had the guts to play with much higher stakes, even if one of them, killing off Optimus Prime, was an extremely stupid decision. Then again, the fact that it’s been about thirty-eight years since this movie came out and we’re still talking about it because of that corporate decision, maybe it wasn’t as bad of an idea as we first thought. Don’t get me wrong, it was an incredibly bad idea, but it has kept us talking about the movie.

I love the '86 film for the introduction of Rodimus Prime, for the story and also, for all of the things you mention. Yo me, the only live action Transformers movie that even comes close to the emotional relam for me is "Bumbleee". I love that spinoff film. it was fun and emotional and had heart. ANd then, I like the 2007 film. Fun and competently made. Rise of The Beasts was also good. My only problem with "Bumblebee" is that it sometimes hits you over the head with the fact that it takes place in the eighties, but other than that, I love it. And in fact, that's not even a big deal for me. Also, I think that Got Rod/Rodimus Prime's hero's journey is better than Luke SKywalker's. And disagree about "Bumblebee". I think that it was evelny split between Bumblebee and Charlie. Also, unlike Sam and Bumblebee, Charlie and Bumblebee have some real interactions. I love that film. It had a Gobots like charm to it.

@lynngreen7978 those movies are set in a kew continuity, they are not prequels to the Bayverse movies. Things like Unicron not being Earth anymore and the Autobots landing on Earth far before 2007 prove this. If Lorenzo has said in the past that they are prequels, then it proves he's actually rather disconnected from the movies he has a producer credit on. And that stuff he says shouldn't be taken very seriously.

Gotta be honest, I absolutely can say 1986 movie is better than Transformers One just based on the released footage. I don't really know how to explain this further, but if there is enough content in that trailer that points in the direction of modern animated movie sensibilities that you don't like or you don't think suit The Transformers, it's not going to suddenly change just by watching it from start to finish. I don't think Despicable Me/Minions animation/humour or pop music suits The Transformers at all. Anime, metal and a grimdark universe though? Yeah, that's the ticket.

The 86 movie was pure Transformers. There was no actor ego or shareholders who needed their new car line shown off for 120 mins out of a 125 min movie. Of course it was made to sell new toys, but just like you said. They didnt understand the gravity or weight of the story they presented to us back then. Every episode was about some form of social etiquette. Friendship, cooperation, how tondeal with other qwerks, knowing when to sacrifice for the greater good. How to recognize selfish intentions as well as selfless intentions. That is why this made such a long lasting impact to our lives. Sure it was made to sell a toyline but they gave it some substance and character types to latch onto. How many kids loved Gears grumpiness, or Tracks' vanity. Things are rarely made with such substances anymore. I feel bad that all these kids have today to latch onto is Fortnite, or GTA5.

I've been saying (since they came out) that the Michael Bay movies should be called The Humans, because they're they focus of the movies. The alien robots happen to be there while the humans are doing stuff. I've heard the explanation being that they were trying to appeal to a wider (human) audience, but there are a multitude of non-human characters that audiences will identify with so this reasoning doesn't fly with me. The other major flaw of that argument is that if you're trying to appeal to an audience by using human characters, you shouldn't be concealing the existence of those human characters in your choice of title (see my initial point). Pick a lane.
