Awesome recap of this situation, i like that you tried something different here! Also at first I was against jagex accounts, as a 17+ year player of Runescape Myself like many others are just inherently resistant to change. However since transferring my account I've been pleasantly surprised with how easy to use the jagex launcher has been and im really hoping for a system where we can preview our characters before log in similiar to other MMO'S. great video! :)

4:25 I know you suggested NOT using an email, but if someone prefers otherwise, I would HIGHLY recommend creating a FRESH/unique (2FA) email that is SOLELY used for your Jagex account. DO NOT USE YOUR PRIMARY EMAIL ADDRESS TO LINK YOUR JAGEX ACCOUNT! This way, the email address itself is not known from any potential previous/future database breaches and therefore makes any chance of a compromised email via recovery/brute force extremely unlikely.

The thing with using an email address solely for your Jagex account is that you'll have to remember to log in to that email from time to time so that it doesn't get deleted due to inactivity. Both Gmail and outlook will delete inactive email accounts.

Only need to access the email for transferring ownership of the RS account after its registered. Although I’m not sure if you’d be able to change the email if the email account gets deleted.

My account was literally hacked a day before I could transfer to Jagex Accounts 🤣 Thankfully I was able to get my account back, but it took about a week. More than enough time to be stripped barren of billions. I just thought it was funny that my account has been safe for so long, only to be hacked the day before Jagex Accounts could be implemented. I love the Jagex Launcher and its ability to make a new character whenever i want, and to have all my characters linked via a single sign in. Its a fantastic new system.

@@jstavorinus I did, it had to do with my email being linked to my Google account! That's how they were accessing my Runescape account. At the time I was taking a little RS break, so they slipped in and boom billions gone.

The whole pull is that you can just "choose accounts with a single click" and the increased security? I'm not using jagex accounts and I can do that now via jagex launcher though, while retaining my username login that nobody has seen since changing in game name from login name was released. It's such a jagex move to push for something like this, enticing with in game loot, while plenty of people are reporting problems with the system.

I will admit that the history of Jagex using ingame events to "sweeten" deals in the past definitely gives a bad first impression for them tying the golden cape event to Jagex accounts, but from a technical perspective they have made a better system at the cost of needing user action to do the migration. There are always some road bumps with new deployments so I don't blame anyone for waiting until they iron out the kinks before considering moving over. You can get the same level of secrecy factor with an email address as a username, but neither are treated as particularly sensitive information (usually stored as plaintext etc.). You're right to value the secrecy of your username though, and if you move over keeping that secrecy with the email address is a good idea.

My friend logged into my launcher last night , didn't have a jagex account previously, now he is unable to log into his account, without me being logged into his launcher, now he has access to my account or no access to his. Yeah very secure ..... can't remove account... should never have upgraded and the help is useless .... please if anyone has solution please help please please

Manage accounts it will take u to the support page follow the support links , I can't access my account blah blah until u find a contact us button , its not easy to find but once u get to a page where u can fill out a form with ur email and card details ect that's the one

If you're concerned about using a known email address for high value accounts then that is not likely to be unique to a Jagex account, I deal with this by having multiple email addresses that I use for different levels of trust, e.g. a burner one for one off "why do I need an account for this?" signups, a general "gaming and forum" one etc. You're correct to value a secretive username, despite them not being treated like passwords when stored (usually as plaintext) a good username is a good idea. But keeping that secrecy factor whilst moving over to a more secure system (from a technical & design pov) would be the best outcome imo.

@@krityaRS That is just swapping one hidden log-in name for another. As more people swap away from the old system, having a unique name will add more obscurity. The new system offers no verifiable benefit as far as I can find.

I wish we would just remove emails and passwords altogether in favour of a physical key you must insert into your computer to log in to accounts, or a physical RSA token to something similar that you can tap on a NFC device connected to your PC to login. Passwords are primitive security.

I'm still kinda disappointed that they don't let you have multiple Charakters that share 1 membership, like every other MMO does, trying out ironman or HIM is just not sustainable with bonds for an average player and I am not paying multiple memberships with money, that's just nonesense. Imagine you had to buy new membership to use a different character in WoW or FF, people would go nuts and somehow in RS people just don't care.

you can turn it into a jagex account, and yes itll make it safer and make it to where you can click to log in, it saves multiple accounts and you can pick them from a drop down menu, its extremely convenient and worth it

Mobile still works, you log into your jagex account and pick a character then it works exactly as before.

You shouldn't need to, once the account is upgraded just log in to the mobile app with your new email and password.

Did they fix it so you can multilog yet? Also upgrading passwords to be case sensitive should have been done ages ago, though I seriously hope that the passwords are at least hashed, but are insensitive because they were forced into a specific case. The Jagex launcher is nice, but mostly because Jagex f'ikg disabled paste in the password field in the client, so I couldn't copy my password from a password manager

If by multilog you mean play multiple characters at once, then yes that is the case, not sure when it was fixed as it's been the case since I started using it. And yeah, it seems a bit odd that the case insensitivity wasn't fixed before, it's part of why I came to the conclusion that they must have a lot of roadblocks to making updates to the old account system.

Can you run several instances of the jagex launcher signed into different jagex accounts so that your accounts aren't tied together? What does the jagex launcher do exactly? Will the jagex launcher eventually become a kernel level rootkit that hooks into other running processes and snoop in on them like most other online games?

Question: I dont do any clues now so i'm saving all the clues i get. Maybe one day i will get Alt 1 and do clue scrolls. If i get a Jagex account will i be able to use Alt 1? Alt 1 has other uses i've heard. I havent seen an answer on this on Reddit. TY in advance

Great video man! My account was locked 1 day before the update. I had a bank pin and 2 step authenticator so hopefully im safe from a hack.. I immediately did a account recovery that can take up to 2 weeks i guess. Now im almost 3 weeks into my account recovery and i still didn't get an account recovery email.. Do people have the same problem or know how to fix this?

Who else was recently hijacked/hacked in the past two weeks? Lol, I know I was. Fortunately, I did not lose any items, and the hijacker did not secure my account. Unfortunately, my 4B ironman friend was also hacked and cleaned, and was locked out of his account for enough time to be cleaned completely. Something fishy is going on! Saw some more posts about this on Reddit... I think Jagex fucked up and don't wanna own up to something that happened. Yes, we both had authenticators and 2FA on emails(the hijackers did NOT access our emails or even attempt to). Whoever it was, did not need our authentication codes, because there is NO way they should've ever obtained one. No, we're not stupid to click clickbaits, phishing attempts, etc... I went through all our discord messages, we never sent any links to each other either. No, we never tried signing into a new client, we've been on runelite for like 4+ years. No, there's not a stupid logger or anything on our pc's...why would a hacker go for a runescape account, as opposed to my bank accounts, my investing accounts, etc...? This is why I'm convinced Jagex had a fuckup or something happened recently that they were (or were not) aware of at the time pertaining to account securities. Maybe verifications were temporarily disabled? I have since then transitioned over to a jagex account, but my friend was hacked BECAUSE the hijacker made a jagex account before he did. We didn't even know about it at the time, but it is not secure and ironically is a method hackers can use to take over an account. I just decided to make mine a jagex account before anyone else could do it, like they did to him. Now, the hacker's email address is the jagex account's email sign in, and is receiving notifications from my buddy who's trying to change his account details back. When you create a jagex account, the new code goes to the new email that you're registering. Meaning, his old email was bypassed with the code that the hacker was receiving on the hacker's new email. When the hacker did this, it was all over. HORRIBLE security measure, why wouldn't you need to verify an email change with the old existing email that has been on the account for years? Although I still have my account, and my items, I am likely done playing the game. 2k Ironman, I just feel so violated. L security and support.

Try to log in on the Jagex account site (account.jagex.com) and after you enter your email there's an option to reset your password.

I am going to write this here cause the redditards of r/Runescape keep deleting this. Do not make a Jagex account, it doesn't makes a new RS character that you can play runescape with, all it does is an account that can't log into the fucking game, I already tried it twice, went to the website did email X and password Y, named the character Z when I go to the RS client is says invalid login, tried the same with the Jagex launcher and all it does is to launch the RS launcher who can't even recognize the accounts made, twice.

Anyway, this new system is good - emails were meticulously attached to accounts, used the old-new Jagex Shield of yesteryear but losing email resets, knowing every detail of that pre-2010 account didnt matter. This new system is better than Jagex's Shield garbage

There are installation instructions on the jagex launcher download page for Debian based distros. I originally had a note in the video about lack of Linux support until I noticed that. I haven't tested it yet though.

Oh that's my mistake then, the page text says "download jagex launcher" and the download is the same for windows but I see in the debian commands it's still for the Runescape launcher. Looks like I should've left that clip in :/
