The only time reprimanding someone over their hobby is valid is if it became an addiction and they lost their job/ won’t find a job, do nothing else and don’t look after their kids. About "the worst she can say is no" - as a man, here is my story from the highschool 10th grade (i think). I wasn't (and pretty sure i am still not) good in face, so basically any dating was complicated. I didn't like many, nor was i liked myself. But! There was one girl i wanted to ask out, for a movie and stuff like that. With lots of debating and encouragement from my friends i eventually decided to put cards on the table and approach her. Surprisingly after i mentioned going to cinema she sayd "lright, why not" and so we did. It was a bit awkrward at first, but eventually pressure lowered and conversation went much smoother. Throughout the movie (a thriller) i noticed some signs that basically SCREAM "come on, do it!". I knew that it's a bad idea to go for something serious, so i just decided to put mt hand on hers to calm her down. *BUT.* The SECOND i made a touch her hand flashed away without her even looking at me. (I didn't need any more hints that "well, we fucked up", so didn't pressure any further. My point was proven right, couse as soon as movie ended she went with "sorry i need to go home and all" and of course proposition of escort was rejected) Dissapointed i walked back home myself, thinking "could've been worse, Alex" hoping that we won't have to interract with each other that often... *BUT I WAS PROVEN WRONG NEXT MORNING!* "The worst she can say is no?!" - the next day, after i went to school, i was called by the councelor for *SEXUAL HARRASMENT!* I started: "wha- why?! What did i do?!", "that girl informed us taht you tried to grab her in inapropriate places, and bla-bla.." WHAT INAPROPRIATE PLACES?! I can't touch hand anymore? Will the accusations be the same if i were better in face? Would've i been called a "sex-offender" if my jockes were funnier? NOT ONLY did i have to get a hour long lecture about ME being a WEIRDO, but reputation was RUINED! Not only wasn't it well recieved by girls in school, but guys and even some of my FRIENDS started to look differebtly at me. "What did i do?!" was the only thing i could say. And OF COURSE nobody beleived me, nobody believed that i wouldn't dare to do that. And OF COURSE there was no need for proofs, to back up taht girls lies. NO! Becouse WHY WE NEED EM, RIGHT?! She can say yes and you go out several times and start to fall in love with her and randomly she just ghosts you completely with no apparent reason.. I want to touch on the topic of emotional men. My husband who I love to the ends of the earth, is sometimes sheltered. He didn't have the best upbringing and as such doesn't let himself cry often. I hate seeing him cry but not because he's "weak" or anything like that. It means something or someone has hurt or upset him or the point he can't hold it back. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen him cry. When he cries it feels like nothing else matters but him. I will lay with him and hold him while he cries. It almost feels like a bonding moment. He is at his weakest mental state and I'm able to help and bring him out of it. I hate that we live in a society where a man crying is seen as a negative rather than them just being human.

So when my best friend was going through his first break-up, He was extremely upset and sad, and of course I was there to comfort him! Because that's the natural and obvious thing to do. His heart was so broken that he couldn't keep his tears and just started crying. And this just broke my heart, seing him so hurt and heartbroken 🥺😢 I just took him in my arms, rubbed his back and let him be vulnerable for the moment because he really needed it, I was by his side the whole time and it helped him a lot. He was super grateful! And he knows he can trust me, he knows I will never ridicule him, because he wasn't "manly" enough in my eyes or so! Now I can't even imagine if it was my partner! My world would shatter!! How can you not be worried about the person you love the most when she's feeling bad??! How can women leave those men who had enough courage and most importantly TRUST in them to let themselves be vulnerable in their presence and they just discard them!! How horrible is that?!! As seen in the phrases of "man up" "be a man" "grow some balls" it's considered "unmanly" to show emotions as a guy (also obvious in the "you're being a little girl" also being used against men for being emotional). At the end of the day I do think men are at a disadvantage when it comes to mental health. Which is why they make up the majority of self-unalivings. And because of the stigma in men being emotional, they tend to not reach out when they need help the most which leads to such high unaliving statistics. I have a son now and it worries me. I'm going to do my part in teaching him that it's okay to be "manly" and emotional, and that if a woman doesn't like him being "emotional" then she can go kick stones.

I had a coworker who had just come back from her loa after giving birth. She was about a month postpartum & still had the appearance of a baby bump. She had put on a decent amount of weight from the last time I'd seen her, and I could tell she felt uncomfortable about it. I have never shared an L publicly, but it is actually a way that women communicate with each other. My friends and I all have young kids. We talk about our oopsies and fails pretty regularly. In a way, it helps to turn sources of stress into humor plus get advice, and also feel less like failures. This is exactly what I was thinking. I remember 20 years ago sitting around with my girlfriends talking about bad dates over a glass of wine. The difference there is there was like four of them and they were all my friends. No one else saw or knew anything about it. It requires strength to let people see where you are vulnerable. A strong man does not need to pretend they are invulnerable because he knows he has the strength to protect his vulnerabilities if necessary. A "strongman" spends enormous amounts of energy trying to convince everyone that he is invulnerable because he knows he is too weak to deal with any kind of genuine assault. The result is that too many men believe they need to project invulnerability, and too many women believe that about men too. Women sharing their problems is deeply ingrained in their DNA. And social media makes it especially easy to share it. Of course, there's still a difference between women who share their most intimate things and those who don't. In western 'democratic' nations it seems to be relatively common to share the intimate ones that shouldn't be shared. If you look at eastern Europe, Asia, South-American, Africa... that ain't happening. They know to not share things that make them look bad. Meanwhile, the US, eastern Europe and Australia... it's different. That being said, there's a decent chunk of women here that does have common sense in that regard. Not all women carry pregnancy the same. With both my boys I only carried in the front giant basketball bellies- but I HATED strangers coming up trying to touch me. Yes, they do that. I would tell them I wasn’t pregnant I was just fat so they would feel uncomfortable too and leave me alone. Now I was very obviously pregnant- but pregnancy belly doesn’t always “disappear” right after you deliver. I’ve seen someone congratulate a woman that had just experienced a loss through etopic pregnancy. If you don’t know them personally- just keep your mouth shut. Oooookay. I have had four kids. My babies were big. I've had three cesareans, and I have not been able to do the work on my core to get those muscles in place (did I mention I have four kids? I know some moms can make it happen. I am not one of them). I am also a bit overweight. And all of my weight goes right there to me abdomen. My legs, arms, and face look pretty fit. So I just look pregnant. All the time. Even when I'm decently fit. I have plenty of people assume I'm pregnant. But you know what? I have accepted this. And when people say this, I tell them I'm just fat, but then I tell them about my core and stuff. Some friends are offended on my behalf, but I just can't fault people, because I really, really, really look pregnant. I think the problem with vulnerability is that it has its time in its place. When you are starting to date, most women want a man who is stable, stoic, who knows how to handle stressful situations, along with the rest of the characteristics that can be considered attractive. It's completely different when you are in a long-term relationship and your partner needs your support and opens up to you in a time of need, by then your love for that person makes you want to comfort and support him.

I would highly advise against the whole prison pen pal thing. I did not take it well, and I feel completely justified 10 years later that I used my entire quota of adult words for the year while I ugly cried. Or, you could just have an iota of compassion that this woman intended to be kind, and had no idea of your pain. There was NO reason to unload your pain onto an innocent person who only meant to be kind. I'm sure if you had politely said 'actually, I just lost the baby', the woman would have had compassion for you that you denied her.

@@DanielleJ-p6u The response to the polite,"I just lost my baby" is a mumbled "oh" and retreating as fast as replacement hips will carry them. It's pretty fast. Social maxims are there for a reason. Don't assume someone is pregnant isn't there just for fat people. It can be much worse. You might become part of one of the worst days in someone's life and 10 years later, they will still be glad they broke all social conventions and called you out on your lack of common sense.

I was told I'd never carry a baby to term so yeah, it was a big deal. People sharing in my joy was a good thing. It made people, particularly other women, happy to see someone having children. Especially in today's day and age where women are made to feel guilty for having them and told it's wrong to do so from so many places. Having someone be happy you are can help ease that guilt parts of society are putting on them.

She didn't do anything to you and you being proud still that you did that says way more about you than her. You're "you don't know what other people are going through" goes right back to you. You don't know what SHE was going through either or had been through. It's not a one way street. You're not the main character in the world's story.
