I only understood the cloud option for games that literally would not run on the switch. The one I really wanted, Kingdom Hearts, had no reason not to be a full port. The demo was completely unplayable for me with all lag options. Made me super sad.

I know, I have wanted to play kingdom hearts on my switch for the longest time. So when I heard they were actually coming to switch I was super exited. I tried the demos and I had the same experience, they were completely unplayable. What makes it worse is that all the KH games (maybe except for 3) could play natively on switch no problems. Some of them were originally hand held games. They just wanted to be lazy about it and only put them on switch just to tick a box.

One thing worth noting is that your performance can differ based on not only your internet speed, but also your location If you don't have a streaming server near your house, you could have 10 gigabit up and down (which doesn't exist on Internet connections yet) and it wouldn't matter because you would still have to get your stream from across the planet

The time restrictions on these demos are insane. I just tried Resident Evil Village and literally before I was even attacked by the first enemy I was kicked out just because I wanted to explore I guess so I guess if you want to see any amount of the game you need to Sprint through the entire thing

The 5 minutes they give you in the demos is not enough to to get a feel for how the gameplay will be like in the full game, especially if your internet connection is very good or very bad.

I think the problem with streaming games is that it's used as a cost-cutting measure, which means the higher-ups are likely to underfund the project (otherwise it won't be cutting costs anymore), leading to the barely functioning mess we've got

My preference is physical or download to storage. Cloud gaming, while great in concept doesn't work in many locations where internet is spotty at best, and non existent or inaccessible at worst. So until Fiber has more availability in those areas it ain't happening for me ... period.

The fact that pathfinder wrath of the righteous was preforming pretty ok in the kenabres festival square market which is pretty on par with the ps4 performance. As someone who is currently playing wrath of the righteous on ps4 it looked pretty ok for the switch. Also getting characters bugged in walls happens communally.

The Alien Isolation and Nier Automata Switch ports are proof that if devs put their backs to it and actually try, you can get really excellent versions of current-gen games on Switch without having to resort to Cloud Gaming. Kudos to companies like Panic Button, Virtuos, Feral and all the other companies dedicated to Switch ports.

Except the difference is that those servers are managed by Sony and Microsoft. The servers here are managed by the individual game publishers, who then likely contract them out to other companies. Though judging by Nintendo's own online servers, they probably couldn't co better

I was so happy kh came to the switch and immediately destroyed when they were cloud ports. My personal fav is kh1 and that one could of absolutely been a straight port :( also with cloud games dissappearing can be said same for all our steam games, they go with the service but steam makes them cheap and I think cloud should do the same.

You have to remember kingdom heart doesn't get ported by its individual games anymore they give you a package of like 4 games to follow the series easier. Like kingdom heart 1.5 and 2.5 and 2.8

Cloud gaming works for the most part very well on PlayStation and Xbox systems, not so much Nintendo, it seems to be a fifty / fifty situation as you pointed out, with the triple A games performing better. Nice video as usual Wood - nice seeing you settled with the doggo!

I was really excited to play RE:Village on a handheld. I really really like this game and loved the idea of being able to play it anywhere like how i can pop onto Skyrim for 20minutes while waiting for a doctors appointment. Requiring a stable internet connection to play on a console who’s significant draw is its portability is STUPID

I've never liked the concept that something I bought could just one day be yoinked away when they shut down a server. That is a good point. Look what happened with Stadia. I am okay with cloud gaming as along as it’s subscription based like Xbox Cloud Gaming and PlayStation Plus. Nintendo and Google made the mistake on charging full price for cloud versions of games.

90 percent of games you buy on disk now only point you to the download or require a day one patch to even play it. Your physical copy is just as volatile you just don't know it. Unplug your internet and install and see how many let you play without downloads.

@@huggysocks oh I'm well aware of the fact that you have to download stuff in order to play most games now, but usually those downloads don't keep you from being able to play the game offline (if it's a game that isnt centered around online functions and multiplayer), which is still better than the cloud games because you could theoretically have downloaded the final patch of a game before it's no longer supported, then be able to play the game offline. Kind of like how PS4 consoles that have the PT demo downloaded to them are super valuable so long as you don't connect them to the internet, you can play that game forever until the console connects to the internet and the game deletes itself. But you're right that physical cartridges don't always fix the issue, and a lot of games are tied to downloads that could potentially disappear just like cloud based games.

THANK YOU WOOD ! I know that there are a lot of cloud games out there that do have issues, but I am tired of reviewers (I'm looking at you RGT) dumping on Kingdom Hearts. I am a LONG time Kingdom Hearts Fan, and I have been waiting PATIENTLY for a port of the KH 1 & 2 that was available on the Switch (and the Wii before that.) I finally got it, even though it's a cloud version & I am completely satisfied. It is worth mentioning that I also have Gigabit Ethernet & a wired connection, but I have had NO issues. I am sorry for those that do, but I am also tired of these reviewers who are telling me I am WRONG to buy this game because it is sending the wrong message. Anyway, thank you for being the FIRST reviewer I have seen that had GOOD things to say about Kingdom Hearts.

I think there is a place for cloud streaming games in the future, but I think the technology needs to improve first. Either we need to develop much faster and consistent internet connections or we need to develop ways of transmitting the data between the host machine and the player's console more efficiently. Likely, we need to develop both for cloud gaming to be truly successful. Like I have played around with streaming PS3 games on my PS4 and PS5 through Sony's cloud streaming service and I have much slower internet than Wood and was using Wi-Fi and I could play with fairly few noticeable issues depending on how many other people were currently on the network using bandwidth. However I do feel game streaming should be relegated to subscription services and not a pay per title model. If I'm buying a game even if it is digitally I want the ability to download and store that game on my device for as long as I choose.

Kinda disappointing when companies were showing off with Witcher 3, Doom Eternal and such at the start of the switches life. Even Ubisoft put all the assassins creed games they put on the console as full games. Streaming is the cowards way of doing it. Consoles that are graphically limited like the switch should stick to only allowing ports of games (like what happened with the DS and the GBA). And if they are unable to port the game over to the standard they wish it to be then it shouldn’t release at all. Maybe then it’d get Nintendo to make their next console to be way more graphically powerful so they can allow greater numbers of ports

Don’t get me wrong Square SHOULD have done ports or Kingdom Hearts, but my guess is they did the math. Getting a PS2 emulator to run well on Switch is probably easier said than done, and going full native would have likely been even more time consuming. They should have done the right thing, but they picked the option with the least effort.

I'm actually in awe that you got some of these to work. I did a similar test on my own some time ago and NONE of them wanted to be playable for me. Edit: I now realize it's because you have better internet than mine. My download speed averages at around 200 mbps.

They don't. If you have good Internet they're pretty good. However, the price and fact you need good Internet is the issue. If they were part of Nintendo Online as they should be people would have less of an issue.

Not all of us can afford fancy internet so I'm really sad that all of the new Resident Evil games are going to be cloud. I really wanted to try the Resident Evil 2 remake but I just won't be able to play Cloud there's too much lag

Hi Wood, Kim & kitties! I felt compelled to post my 1st ever KZbin comment & show you some love cos the way you ended this video gave me the 1st laugh of this, my 47th birthday! (Halloween is such a gr8 birthday to have growing up... there's always a themed cosplay party to go to & u get to demand sweets from strangers). I wanted to appreciate the creativity & care u guys put into your posts... I found you during lockdown & was drawn in by you sharing your mental health journey (alongside all the fun, quality content & accomplished editing (Goooooo Team Skillshare!!) At the start of lockdown I was finally diagnosed with social anxiety disorder & anxiety avoidance disorder which helped me make sense of why I coulnt find lasting happiness amd why anxiety & fear limited my relationships, career and squashed my own creativity. Following some therapies & counsellong I am now happy to post on a social platform without the fear of being ashamed or exposed as "not being good enough" & am rising to the challenge of a recent promotion which I had avoided taking for 10 yrs. I don't like cloud gaming but the only one I want to get is kingdom hearts. It's just my favorite series and I would love to play it handheld on the couch or in bed. I appreciate you trying it and it working makes me feel a bit better about it.

Having Re2 remastered on my switch seemed so cool that I had to buy the cloud version! And it actually works quite well. Sure the games may have a hiccup or two sometimes but my experience is that it's MUCH better than a lot of other cloud streaming services. Cloud gaming has come a long was. But yes the kingdom hearts game that was on ps2. That was stupid to put it through the cloud.

The one and only cloud game I ever tried to play was control, and for me the game took so long to load that I literally just got to walk around during the trial. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Got to a red tinted room and that was it. Didn't even get an idea of what the game actually was.

The $60 price tag for games you'll never own and will one day shut down is exactly why I hope these services die a death and people don't feed them. If Google couldn't get the service to be successful with Stadia and had to hand out refunds for games you'll no longer have now, then it's a push for anyone to make it work unless they can somehow promise you'll NEVER lose the games you've paid for... which is an impossible statement to make. Also, you considered doing WWE/AEW content on a separate channel? I'm sure there are plenty of us on here who are also wrestling fans who'd love a chat with you about that kind of stuffs. 👍🏻

I tried demos for resident evil 2 and 3 on Switch, and they performed better then RE Village. I think the cloud games should all just be available free as part of Nintendo Switch Online. It’s hard to justify paying $50 for a game that doesn’t guarantee a good experience and only available so long the service is.

I had horrific internet for a very long time, and when the Kingdom Hearts came to switch, even though it was on cloud, I so desperately wanted to buy it, but my internet was way too horrendous for it to even load a few seconds in to the demo. Thankfully this year AT&T FINALLY installed Fiber in my neighborhood several months back, so I went ahead and bought the 1,000 Mbps speed, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I bought it with Kingdom Hearts in mind. Just recently bought all 3 Kingdom Hearts cloud versions, and started playing KH1 about a week ago. I am BEYOND happy to report that so far it has been playing perfectly, with ZERO lag and zero issues, even when it says the server is congested. I loved Kingdom Hearts when I was younger when it came out, but haven’t been able to play it for a very long time because due to certain impacts of my chronic illness, looking at a tv screen in any capacity almost always sets a lot of my symptoms off. So, playing switch handheld is really my only option. I know a lot of people despise cloud ports, and I totally agree with many/most of those viewpoints, especially for a game like KH1, which could easily be done as a stand-alone physical copy on the switch. But, for my situation at least, where there’s really no other option to play Kingdom Hearts on any other platform, I’m at least glad it’s an option to play it on cloud, and I have been so happy to once again play one of my most nostalgic favorite games again handheld. So, if you’re someone interested in cloud ports, specifically Kingdom Hearts, and your curious about ideal internet speeds, 1000mbps works perfect for streaming for me, with zero lag or issues whatsoever, regardless how congested the server says it is. I can’t vouch for any lower fiber speeds than the 1,000mbps, so you may not even need that much on a fiber plan, but that’s just been my experience. 😊

I have Guardians of the Galaxy and I enjoy the ability to play AAA games on my fav console. It’s a little input lag (slightly) but it looks amazing in comparison to the ports.
