For real, same. I can't bring myself to hate this game and when people do bash it. I just question their view point on games and video gaming over all. Games like TM are neish audience that have a huge fan base. Even more now because of the show. I showed my mom the show and she loved it and wants a season 2 😅. Lol after it was over she told me is there a season 2 right after I said their no season 2 yet the show just came out 😂

TM3 was my first so I had nothing to compare it to. Then TM4 improved on TM3 so much that I really like both. I really do think the combat is actually better. Outside of how broken Sweet Tooth is in TM4 I think TM4 is near perfect for me

One thing that I feel separates TM3 and TM4 is the feel. With the physics, graphics, and sound design of TM3, it just doesn’t feel satisfying shooting someone or blowing them up. When you shoot someone with for example a power missile in 3, it just feels meh. But shooting someone with a power missile in 4 feels like “yeah that looks like it hurt”. It’s a shame though because club kid, auger, and flower power are good character designs.

However napalm in 3 was thousands times better than in 4. and remote in 3 had more massive explosion than 4.

funny you get that feeling, because i feel like either everyone has less health in 3, or it's that all the missles do way more damage.. In 4 - and this is coming from a tm4 superfan - I feel like it takes way longer to kill enemies with normal weapons and that their hitboxes are slimmer and harder to hit compared to in 3.

Twisted Metal 4 is probably the game I played the most by a good margin. I really liked the art style of Black, but wasn't as much a fan of the faster game play. For me TM4 was probably where the franchise peaked.

I can forgive TM 3 for its bad character choice, bad car design, and idiotic endings because it brought TM to its true form hard core Metal music, and not this V8 music that we got From David and his Team Or the old Soft rock we got from TM 2012. When you play TM3 and you listen to that music, the rush of adrenaline you get is amazing, especially for a tryhard like me. gameplay was really good. I like the rearview in TM3. You can see what is behind you perfectly well. Also since the cars flip over, you have to learn how to control the vehicle, so it doesn't flip over. I don't know how to explain it, but you can actually control that with the movement of your tires. even while you are in the air. You can also use the beautiful sexy rearview to time a jump to avoid missiles and freeze attacks. every car can use rear attack to transform their specials into atomic bombs. Auger can grab you forever. outlaw can electrocute you with 5 specials at the same time. Hammerhead can actually escape anything with her special rear attack. Specter can fire 5 specials and they will land if your opponent is frozen. If you use rear attack while moving Specter's special will never reach its target. the only way to get the 5 hit is to have the opponent immobile. There are more combos with other characters, but What I like the most is the Machinegun effect. The sound of it, the collision sound, the explosion damage you take when you ram a vehicle. With TM3 you don't just get the game. You get some kick ass soundtrack. And the best part is that we got the real calypso, the guy from TM2. That's the voice we need. Who the heck is that guy and why wasn't he brought back for TM head on or TM 2012. TM3 has so much to offer. Honestly if it wasn't for its shitty map design and the stupid endings TM3 would be Gold. TM4 however is as Bad as TM 1. yeah they fixed the flipping over but in doing so we got stocked with something far worse.. You can get glued to ledges. Because the car can't flip over you can easily get glue to a ramp or anything because the car flips over automatically fast. TM4 is long and boring. the amount of damage that cars can take is insane. It is true that Sweet tooth ending was bad in TM2, but what the endings is basically telling you is that sweet tooth is a compulsive killer. He doesn't want to be limited by the rules of our world, so he decided to transform into an insect, so he didn't have to worry about our rules and he can kill as much as he wants, but The twist is that even though he got what he wants, he can't escape mankind. That old lady was going to squeeze its guts out.

I agree with almost everything negative you said about TM3 and 4 except the hang up about the password system. I absolutely disagree with the graphics. I believe you are playing an emulated version with improved graphics. Playing the games on PS1 or even PS2 backwards compatibility, you will see how bad the graphics really are. The idea of TM3 was fine, but making everything circus themed in TM4 is a major turn-off. Overall, they are the "red-headed-step-child" of the series because they feel like it. They are the lesser of the franchise, but still better than many other games. I still own all the Twisted Metal games because they are all good to an extent. Plus, the first 4 make good mood music when I pop them in the CD player while driving.

I loved all the twisted metal games, 3 and 4 seemed to be quite different from Twisted Metal 2, which is what I played first then went back and played TM 1. My main issue for TM 3 was with the character development and the endings the gameplay to me was still fun. TM 4 to me didn't feel as bad to me as I think it improved a lot from TM3. I remember before Twisted Metal Black came out I was expecting an all out armegeddon style Twisted Metal game where all the characters from TM 1-4 are in it and every level you go against a new cast of characters and when one gets eliminated they are out instead of going to the next level and potentially versing the same character again. I don't think the Twisted Metal Black, Small Brawl, and 2012 characters mesh well with the ones from TM 1-4 but I love those games as well. One of my favorite vahicles is Spectre from TM3 the Dodge Viper even with those physics, it feels really good to drive and play to me.

The physics engine is absolute shit. Driving feels terrible. This is seriously objective and not an opinion, the engine is just rushed and awful. The videos/style is worse, the endings are stupid and make no sense, and it destroys all the character continuity. Add to that the aggressive AI that a lot of people don't like that constantly farms health packs.

Twisted Metal 4, I can understand some issues, but I replayed it recently and it's honestly better than I remembered. Not one of the best, but WAY BETTER than TM3. That game is just fucked with the physics, controls and specials. By no means unplayable, but it's a major bastard.

I started with TW3 & 4 and tbh I do feel like everyone gets a little dramatic about 3 and 4. I personally love them. Yes black is awesome and better however it came out on a new console years afterwards so of course. I think TW1 and 2 are almost unplayable tbh. I had them both and hated them. 3 and 4 are clunky and the handling is rough but black is loved by all and the handling there is also not great though. I think it just became popular to hate them so everyone does. They have issues and things that are annoying but ALL twisted metal games are like that. I think sometimes people get mad that 3 and 4 just aren't the same games as the first 2 because the first 2 are the games that got a lot of people into it. 3s and 4s maps are awesome except one or two. 4 is awesome for all the secret weapons and making your own car etc. I truly don't know why some people hate them so much and I really think it's partially just the classic mop mentality or popular bandwagon kind of thing. They aren't the best in the series of course because they are old but man going back and playing them is a blast and I love them both personally. There is also a skill gap involved to a degree and that's always a part of games that makes some people hate it instantly.

I've gone through the whole alignment chart when it comes to how I feel about TM3 and 4. I played TM3 when it just came out, I was 7 years old. At the time, loving TM2 through my child brain, I immediately loved TM3. What I remembered the most about TM3 was that Spectre was a Dodge viper and I always had to swap or fight with my step-brother over who played him. I beat him every time we 1v1'd for Spectre. It was great. I played TM4 a few years after it came out, I believe during the peak of the PS2 era. I had not played any TM games in a long time, prior to this so I didn't remember what the games were supposed to feel like. With that approach, I also enjoyed TM4's gameplay, but I couldn't help but be annoyed over all of the new characters. The closest I got to liking a character was Pizza Boy because he drove a Honda Civic and it was totally because he was a hilarious caricature of a dying trend. I got bored of TM4 really quickly, admittedly because I kept playing the Road Rage level. I now understand the error of my ways. With time, I started to dislike TM4 more and more because of what I remembered of it. At the same time, I looked at the endings for TM3 and was like "Oh god, this is really stupid." And the more I looked into TM3, realizing another developer made it, the more I started to dislike it. Doesn't help that it ended up being a popular opinion that TM3 sucked, so I sheepishly fell into that thought process. Coming back to all of it now and revisiting the series as a whole? It turns out that my opinions changed dramatically. Now TM2 is aggravating to play, TM1 is a blast, I finally played Black and it was awesome. What about TM3 and 4? I've come around and I find TM4 fantastic. Even if I still kind of dislike the characters, especially Captain Grimm, I know good gameplay when I see it and TM4 is as good as you could get it with what 989 had. I don't hate TM3 anymore either, especially after learning of its hellish development cycle and seeing first hand how passionate Jim Buck is about his creation TO THIS DAY. I have to respect it. We could have gotten so much worse from TM3, but it managed to come out playable enough for me to enjoy it as a kid. I know that I have to revisit it.

I hear a lot of "if you started with 1 & 2, you'd hate 3 & 4" I'm glad people who jumped on at 3 & 4's release like them I started on TM1, and I think 3 & 4 are amazing games, even if they're vastly different I'm a fan of every single TM game because car combat games are one of my favourite genre of games, and with all the changes across the series, I've never been disappointed or disliked a single game Some aren't as strong as others (Black I'm looking at you) but each game has its own merits for why their fun games Small Brawl & Head-On I love, but my fondest memories are of playing 2, 3, & 4 with my Dad, mostly 3 & 4, so they'll hold a special place in my heart

Honestly, TM3 is the TM game I've had more fun with and I've played them all except for TM2012. I find myself playing it from time to time along with its mod after learning about it thanks to you and Kong. The AI in this game can be merciless on the higher difficulties but it makes for some truly funny moments, like that video of yours in which you're battling 7 opponents and 4-5 of them die in an extremely quick succession in Egypt. I agree with you about the endings though. I especially disliked when a character's ending didn't match their bio. I think TM2 did better in that regard, save for one: Sweet Tooth. When you look at his bio and his claim that "when I win, you'll never be too far from me", it would appear that he's trying to become this kind of omnipresent nightmare, someone you'd never be able to run away from because he inhabits the insides of your mind... We know what happens later.

3 is hard to hate because it was the first TM I ever played, even if it gave us Tommy Wiseau Calypso and added characters we wouldn’t see again like Great Value brand Keith Flint. The soundtrack was good and the graphics were a step up, not to mention I think traction improved so my car wasn’t skating around a map. I gave 4 a lot of shit even though I liked it because of the boss fights after each level, plus LOOK AT HOW THEY MASSACRED MAH BOI GRIMM! The game was still fun though and I would still marathon all contestants again.

Personally I prefer Head on, Black and as far as the PS1 tm's are concerned SB. Idk I never really had fun playing 3 and 4 might just boil down to the physics, controls and the very low damage numbers on 80% of the weapons (The other 10% is some of the specials and the auto lob) also don't think I didn't notice you didn't mention the low hanging fruit that is Speed missiles :P I don't see an issue with the level password system, it's not like you using an actual cheatie cheat just simply getting back to where left off is that any different than loading up a save?

Twisted Metal 4 was amongst some of the first games I ever played as a kid so I do genuinely love TM4. I will say now that I'm older, the overall art direction and story writing wasn't the best by any means. However, you have to admit that TM4 had possibly the best soundtrack of the series. I remember even having the CD with the soundtrack on it plus some other music entitled: Twisted Trax. Good times. I agree with your thoughts on Twisted Metal 4 wholeheartedly. I'm very indifferent to Twisted Metal 3 due to the weird physics and boring level design, but I do get pockets of fun playing through it. However, Twisted Metal 4 feels like a major improvement. I like the cast of characters, even if they are more silly and cheesy, I think the difficulty is much more fair, and I quite like TM4's level design. I prefer TM4 over TM2 thanks to its more fair difficulty plus having a larger cast of characters overall.

I think the key difference between Holland and DC is that while they're both essentially flat rectangular planes, Holland gives you options of variance in topography and strategy (however brief) in the windmills, and Holland also encourages a fast, intense, frenetic gameplay style that suits both the level and the game. DC offers none of that, and the clumsy, cumbersome control scheme and physics of TM3 only serve to highlight the shortcomings of the level design, along with the many inadequacies of the game as a whole in that regard. That said, I never had a problem with level passwords, particularly if they were a standard option implemented by the devs. At the time of TM 2's release, I was a high school kid who wasn't yet old enough to work and couldn't readily shell out $20 for a memory card (which was a lot of cash at the time for something so small), so a game with level passcodes to emulate that functionality was a godsend for players like me.

I replayed all Twisted Metal games these last few days, and I gotta say that I had the most fun with TM3, surprisingly. The huge majority will say and agree with Jaffe that TM is more of an arena brawler and the cars are more of fighting characters, so being able to turn without moving was a huge improvement in TM2 and is a must of the series. I'm starting to see things differently. TM3 has some physics issues, I know. But it is the one that makes you feel like you are controlling a car and actually in a car combat game. The handling and speed stats make a lot more difference, as it is possible to keep on a bigger, sluggish enemy's six, like a dogfight. I was able to avoid Darkside most of the time being on his tail. It felt like I was a skilled driver and I was outmaneuvering my opponents. It was so much fun! The slower pace also helps this type of combat. TM3 has the worst characters and story. But in terms of gameplay, it is miles better than TM2, imo. TM3 is really underrated and it is impressive what 989 Studios was able to pull off from the ground up in such a tight schedule.

I think for a fair few people, they also want to play through the series in what is considered the "main canon". And thats where i thought you would also mention the original developers and how THEY felt about TM3 and 4 (because there's no one that hated those games more than David Jaffe). They hated TM3 and 4 so much, they deliberately tried to erase em from canon and get them replaced by Head-On and such. They basically dont want TM3 and 4 to be considered part of the series, even, and think both games fail in every way of being a Twisted Metal game. That's basically where a grand number of people stand too. They follow with what Jaffe and the OG dev team lead with the series, and thus, they believe in them that TM3 and 4 has no place in the series and they hate/ignore it completely, even if someone said something positive about em because "Jaffe doesnt agree with you". Would've been nice to see your argument against Jaffe.

Tm4 is my favorite, simply because that's what I played the most as a kid. I forget what game I technically started with but I don't think I progressed normally. I also didn't really play them for the story, nor did I know how to use many of the special attacks, but I didn't find myself struggling that much, although I didn't crank up the difficulty much either, for child me and the single digits of age, I enjoyed the games.

My general summarized thoughts are that 3&4 are too far removed in tone and functionality from the rest of the series for them to feel like they belong when put up next to my favorites in the franchise. I fully understand why and I give props to 989 for making TM games from scratch with as short of time as they had, but even so, to me I don't see or feel the passion in their games like I do the Jaffe-made games - and that's what makes the difference. It seems too much like 989 just had TM dropped on their desks one day, and they then set out to make games that **looked** like Twisted Metal without ever truly grasping what it takes to make games that **are** Twisted Metal. Meaning: I can't shake the feeling that if the content (the recognizable characters, vehicles, weapons, etc.) in 3&4 were re-skinned and renamed without changing anything else about how the games play, you'd have no idea that they were supposed to be TM games as opposed to the more generic car combat competitors of the time. TM3 started off on the right foot that, despite the stiff and janky physics of the TM3 engine and the "class of grade-schoolers given an hour to make stories for the characters" level of writing, it at least tried to fit in and act as a sequel to TM2. The character roster in TM3 was enjoyable and the gameplay was passable - and, poor writing aside, the tone of TM was there, if not slightly watered down and overly-cartoonish. The tone of TM4 however was literally all over the place. TM4 couldn't decide if it wanted to be sci-fi, supernatural, old-timey, prehistoric, realistic, or toy cars in a bedroom. TM4 passed by all the other check-boxes and checked the box that simply said "yes". TM4 literally threw everything at the wall, and instead of waiting to see what stuck, forced everything to stick by taping everything onto there. For that reason to me, TM4 is an off-the-rails mess, but even an off-the-rails mess can be fun at times. TM4's gameplay improved greatly from 3 so props for that, but I would rather take "jankier gameplay but focused, grounded tone" over "smoother gameplay but nonsensical tone and oh hey, there's a leprechaun in it this year too". Thing is, I don't hate these games. Not when I played them as a kid, and not now. Fun can still be had playing them and at the end of the day that's what matters. I'm only critical because I see the potential they had, and see that they could've been much better in my eyes if they had more time to develop, more care for the source material behind them, and someone on the team who could've reeled in and kept in check all the silly, cartoony, one-dimensional joke characters they wanted to cram into their games for some reason.

They were being juvenile about it, yes, which can be dumb, but not really the definition of sexist. It isn't against women, or stereotyping them. Dumb? Sure. Otherwise, if the point were that having a character in something be the 'sexy' one, or have any focus on those topics with a character means it's automatically sexist, then I guess that would make most anime shows and games sexist, even though they also do it with the males, and is meant to be lighthearted or arousing. If someone still finds all that sexist, then either we've got very different definitions of sexist, or they're lost.

Personally I think that Twisted Metal 2 and Head On are the best games in the series, followed shortly by Twisted Metal 1995 and then Black. I preferred the comic book style that TM 1995, TM 2, and TM Head On used. To be totally fair, I think that Twisted Metal 3 and 4 are visually impressive games as far as the PS1 goes. As for my problems with Twisted Metal 3 and 4. What truly wrecked those two games for me was the change of tone. Twisted Metal established itself as kind of dark comedy with a slightly "edgy" twist. 3 and 4 entirely threw that out the window, and went for a cheesy and cartoony tone instead, and it almost felt like a cruel joke that the developers were playing on the players. This tone shift also hurt TM Black for me as well, I wasn't really a fan of the extremely dark tone of that game. I can give a pass to the less than ideal collision detection, bugs, and empty(ish) levels, because it's a PS1 game, you can't expect early 3D games to be perfect. As far as controls, I personally love the kind of clunky, heavy-handed controls of the first games. It makes it feel like you're actually handling a 2 ton pile of steel, rather than an RC car like the 3rd and 4th games; mind you this is coming from someone who loves the Driver 1 and 2 style of control. I don't think TM 3 and TM 4 are inherently awful games or anything, I just think it suffered from a change of developers. With new developers comes a totally new and different set of ideas for what a game should be. This becomes a problem for a game series when it has already established AND doubled down on its universe, after all, Crash Bandicoot had the same issue as Twisted Metal. When you pass the baton on to another set of hands, you're passing on a fanbase as well. That fanbase fell in love with the first two games, and had an idea of what a Twisted Metal game should be, and what a sequel would look like. When you deliver a product that isn't inherently bad, but extremely different, you should expect backlash. I think that if Twisted Metal 3 and 4 came first, then the other games would be looked at like the outliers. In a way, Twisted Metal 3 and 4 were marketed and sold to the wrong audience, because they were so different from what fans had come to expect. Sorry for the paragraph lol...

Even if it shits all over the established story.

Going from playing TM2 to TM4 is incredibly frustrating and I had to force myself to get some type of enjoyment out of 4 as a result. Going from 4 to TMSB was very refreshing even though all playing 4 did was make me suck at 2-SB. I wish the team had made one more on PSX that was more like 2 with SB handling and improved draw distance. Bonus if they could strike a tone in the story and endings more consistent with Black.

very surprised going from TM2 to 4 was frustrating for you. I find the controls and physics to be so much easier in 4. It felt especially nice to do the special moves like shield and freeze because the inputs worked every single time, whereas on 2 you had to press them in a very specific speed - otherwise it would fail even after 5 tries in a row. And let's not forget the little input delay between doing the code and the special coming out. In 4, (and 3) it is always instant.

The dealbreaker for me on TM3 was the endings. Why in the holy heck would you enter into a twisted metal tourney just to watch tv or get in touch with your inner child? And thumper wanting to hang with his homies, like.... just go do it. Maybe if all his homies were dead, that would be a good reason, but it's never brought up. That, along with the floaty physics, the horrid 3D work, the half-arsed voice acting, and the lack of offensive options (ramming and machine guns) when out of pickups really sunk the game for me. TM4 is definitely an upgrade, but it still has some of those issues. I will admit though, that the build-a-car option needs to be brought back.
@mr.bp-dcbg

TM3 had one big major issue, and that's the physics. They're attempting realistic driving physics in a game where mobility is key. You can hardly power slide in that game, or pull a 360 while still keeping momentum and control, which often makes combat and movement frustrating. TM has always been an arena shooter in vehicles and the last thing you want is for the player to frequently loose momentum and flip into a state where the can't do anything (Sometimes just a few missiles knocks your balance off in that game). TM4 essentially fixes this for the most part, but during my Immortal rank runs I commented that you're often fighting the physics of the game (Getting stuck on ledges/walls, the still too realistic reverse, and traction). Plus there's hardly any sliding so jousting and dueling are less engaging than TM2. Knockback in TM2 is frustrating because it's literally designed to fuck you over, and I hate that. If it just knocked you back in the opposite direction that would fix a major gripe I have with that game. The level design in TM4 was awesome, and I'll be the first to admit I'd definitely want some form of refix/remake of that game above all else since TM2's "remake" is Head-On, and when you think about BLACK it's kinda a big remix on the first one. As you said in the video due to development crunch time, and hardware limitations they had to cut back on how many vehicles are allowed on the board. TM4's graphic fidelity is awesome. The texture choices, lighting system, the explosions and the sheen on the vehicles was a nice addition (although past a certain point I never cared for graphics in games and I almost don't like modern graphics past 05). Also is no one going to comment on how awesome the SFX are in TM4. I plugged in my subwoofer, and some decent speakers and this game really has some awesome sound effects and sound propagation (Speed missiles sound so damn awesome with how the warp in pitch depending on the distance). TM4's are only smarter with a few things such as being aware of health, jumping, jumping to dodge, hyperspace, shield, and invisibility. They lack the ability to navigate the world as good as 2's, and they're all far too similar (They quite literally move the same, shoot almost the same aside from their special, and act the same). They seem to have a binary setting whearas TM2's AI had personality, temperament, and would actively work together to pin you or play different roles that force the player to learn the in's and out's (they're actually aware of each other, but aren't coded to fight each other. They will actually try to hide around corners but it's clunky at times because the often ram really hard into a wall, and they're aware of mines on the ground) Also on Immortal rank you run into the exact same issues you would in TM2 albeit to a slightly lesser degree so I can't say much about that. The difference is that TM4 gives feedback most of the time as to why you died, while in TM2 it's essentially the old arcade method of just screwing you over to put another quarter in the slot, plus the game actually reads your movement and inputs I will always compare TM1 to TM3 and TM2 to TM4

When it comes to Twisted Metal there there is a misconception that 3 and 4 made the game cartoony when in reality Twisted Metal wasn't really "dark" until Black. Most people first played these games as kids and didn't really get that most of the characters in 1 and 2 were satire on American culture, particularly West Coast culture, of the time. The increased crime violence and police militarization of the early 90s plus the start of the "real TV" era of extreme television was mocked in this game where things were taken the extreme where it was all turned into a game show. 3 tried to keep going with that but played into a more silly direction while 4 went with a "carnival from hell" theme. Jaffe may say that Sweet Tooth was "serious" retroactively but its clear in the first couple of the games that 1 and 2 were jokey 90s remakes of Death Race

Best thing about Twisted Metal 4: hey look there's a Civic hatchback driven by Vanilla Ice lol. Worst: unless you know about the proximity mine cheese, NEVER ATTEMPT to throw hands with Sweet Tooth.
