There was a group of people that did make some fan-improved ending concepts for this game. For Warthog, they had Rogers mortally wounded, yet he's still able to tell Calypso his wish. Calypso actually does make him fully young again, and Rogers is grateful for it. In return for granting his wish, Calypso asks of a favor to him, which he obliges. The following year, Roadkill/Marcus seems to have won the tournament, but just one catch. Captain Rogers has taken Minion/Primeval's place as the big boss of the contest, and is piloting an M1 Abrams tank. Marcus can only watch in shock and horror as he gets blown to bits. Auger actually goes for the wish mentioned in the profile, and even twists it against Calypso. Auger wished that wherever his company built/redesigned something at is permanently off-limits from Calypso's contest. Unbeknownst to Calypso, Auger's company built or redesigned things practically everywhere on Earth, allowing society to heal and improve while Calypso has a tantrum over it. Until he realizes he can host the contest in the sky (or space). Club kid wanted to host a party that would make international headlines, with him at the center of the mosh pit. The twist, it's a dance party full of Zombies, and he's the only human. Lastly, Flower Power. She basically gets rid of all man made structures and basically make life like it's Adam and Eve. People are pissed she probably killed millions from that stunt (People in hospitals, for example), and chase after her in an angry mob.

The problem with TM3 is its both a victim of a short development cycle and the idea of "We can, therefore we should". "We can ditch the comic book style cutscenes and add cutting edge 3D animation". "We can add rollover physics and realistic steering mechanics". "We can take design liberties with already established characters". They then proceeded to half ass all of it because they didn't have a choice or the time to do any of it properly. Its honestly a Miracle that it came out even half as good as it did.

The worst part about the endings is that they are pretty easy to fix. Outlaws could easily have been “oh, everyone collectively agrees that nothing is illegal and the world falls into chaos”. Meanwhile, they could have used outlaw’s ending for Auger. Just change his wish to making his buildings indestructible, then reveal most of his business was reconstructing the buildings.
@El_Febo_Abel Жыл бұрын
The endings in TM2 have something that was missing in this 3rd installment: All the characters have interactions with Calypso, Calypso never knows their wishes before their meeting and some wishes overcome the unfortunate twist (some even turn against Calypso). The only thing that I found "bad" was that they needed more voices (Twister does not speak in his own final) and not repeating so many Calypso sketches, but they are details that never tarnished the game for me.

I actually really enjoyed Twisted Metal III but then again it was my introduction to the series. That aside, as a game developer, I can tell you that this game suffered from many different things. The first major point of contention is that when Sony acquired the intellectual rights to the series, they failed to really press the original creators on giving them the game engine as part of that acquisition. As a result, when they handed off 3's production to an in-house studio, the requirement to make an engine from scratch probably consumed most of the time and resources, and it probably got to the point of, "If it's playable, ship it." Another point is the creative direction of the game. Every ending felt like a big fuck you to the player, as each ending resulted in the driver being screwed over no matter what. It's like the writing staff that created the character profiles had little communication with the writers who drafted the endings, when really they should have been the same people if they weren't. That causes a huge tonal inconsistency such as with Auger's profile vs his ending. The endings should have been made more sinister, leaving some room for interpretation or a much more ironic result from the winner suffering from their wish. Making everything a mandatory monkey's paw is contrived, lazy and makes the endings predictable once you've seen just two of them to confirm it, Take for example Twisted Metal 2's Hammerhead. They wished for the ability to fly, and Calypso provided... them airline tickets. It was a funny and ironic ending, and if it were handled by 3's ending writer staff, they would have probably been turned into flies or something, and die when Calypso swats them. Endings need to either provide a twist of irony, consequences as the result of the winner's own actions, or set up for a sequel with a cannon ending. At the end of the day, Twisted Metal III suffered from a short development time (even if it was the 90s and for a PS1 game), but particularly from needing to have a whole new engine created from scratch.

I kid you not, when I was still in my early-mid teens in 1999, I was at Best Buy and I had the option to choose THIS game or Super Smash Bros for the N64. Guess which one I went for? I was a huuuuuuuuge Twisted Metal fan and I had to swallow my pride and selfishness that day because I still think back on how much I would have regretted getting TWISTED METAL 3 and how much it would have changed my life based on this decision because I got my buddies at the time into Smash Bros (4 dudes, 2 of them younger than us). They would come over my house and it would be A. BLAST. Other people had LAN parties or whatever but we had Smash Bros. My older brother would even come in and play with us at some point and that would be 6 dudes in a rather small space. It didn't last very long because the next year was the year that everyone went to a different school and I was the only one that didn't attend the school they went to. I guess you could say it was the exact opposite of the experience I had with them some several months before. To elaborate a bit further, it was my brother that convinced in the end because we would watch the Smash Bros. TV ad and we thought the game must be amazing. Before I left to the store and pick this up instead of TWISTED METAL 3, he said, "Get Smash Brothers! Don't get Twisted Metal!!". If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

I know this game is bad, but there are things that fans are wrongly accusing this game and 989 Studios of a couple of things they didn't do. Most infamous was calling Needles Kane, "Sweet Tooth" to the character and the vehicle, despite Twisted Metal 2 did that in his own ending. And Outlaw's Officer Carl changed his name to Buzz which again Twisted Metal 2 did that first until Head-On changed back to Carl.

Even the first game has Calypso calling Needles "Sweet Tooth" in a pair of endings, and 2 IIRC also has Calypso referring to a bunch of other drivers by the name of their vehicle; indicating that they're not just car names but also the title or alias of the driver. Not to mention that "Sweet Tooth" _does_ works as a name for the clown in a way. Like is it really so unbelievable that people may take to nicknaming a serial killer who drives around in an ice cream truck "Sweet Tooth" or "the Sweet Tooth killer"?

I actually like those cinematics a lot, the style is close enough to the old comic style to be acceptable, and for 1999 cel-shading (nigh-on unseen when basic Silicon like Beast Wars and ReBoot was the main popular thing) it pulls it off, at least in retrospect and a false nostalgia, I didn't play this or see these when I was young. Funnily enough that's how controlling the cars feels lol. But yeah it does make the cutscene look worse than the actual models do.

When you play games like Twisted Metal 2 or Black, going back to this game just shows how bad it truly is. Both tonally and gameplay wise.

Tm3 hands down my favorite in the series. Personally I would say my least favorite to play was TM Black, though it had some good stories. I also love the intro to tm3, and the game has one of the best soundtracks. The more we get into this video the more I just cant agree with your stance lol.

I just started getting into this series a few days ago and when i saw Twisted Metal iniatally i would logically asume it's more or less mature. However Twisted Metal 3 looks like it's made for babys compared to two.

As much as my dumb 11 year old self liked 3 back then, I probably got more use from it as an audio CD than a game. I felt so cool when I learned you could do that, it was like being in a secret club or something. And it was how I first discovered Rob Zombie. I don’t pretend to be a massive metalhead or anything, but I do still enjoy his music casually from time to time. Also, the only game that has made me motion sick was Assassins Creed Black Flag, that freaking boat… Great video, appreciate you sharing your thoughts, can’t wait for 4 and the show.

I give props to 989 for TM 3, doing what they could in the short time frame they had while still trying to make a game that mostly fits in with its predecessors, by way of the vehicles/character roster and "world tour" aspect of the tournament. TM 4 after that though went too far off the deep end for me to try giving it the same praise.

I have not played many twisted metal games, this is one of the few that i have played what turned me off of it was the endings, i remember completing this for the first time as auger, I picked him because i liked his motivations displayed in his bio, The ending would have made more sense for nearly every other character even sweet tooth

I'm biased but Twisted Metal 3 was my first TM game and being around 10-11 years old at the time of receiving a Playstation 1 back in the 90's, Twisted Metal 3 also introduced me to my first real big interests in Industrial Metal/Rock music, such as Rob Zombie and Pitchshifter.
@BigSlick98 Жыл бұрын
I actually like TM3. Not as good as 2 but for 9 months and all the development hell they went through they did a damn good job. Only problems I have is the endings and the cars flipping over sometimes too easily. The gameplay is really fun and that’s the most important thing.

*Nitpick/Tangent:* Proceed only if you feel like it. XD @18:25 Capt. Roger's (Warthog's) Twisted Metal 2 ending only works because we _know_ Calypso is looking for any excuse to twist the wish. Your head and brain are parts of your body, ergo wishing for the body of a 20-year-old makes perfect sense. In fact, even if you know Calypso is going to try and twist the wish, it seemed the least likely to backfire. If Captain Roger had just wished to be 20 years old again, Calypso would have probably just legally (and retroactively) changed his birthday to February 29th. Okay, the math doesn't exactly work out to 20 on the dot, but considering the body versus head cheat, being 26-ish probably still counts as being 20. Or Calypso would remake his body so that everything was 20 years old... but still looked and functioned like his 105 year old body. XP Or include his _mind_ and in doing so, probably get him killed or into doing something unfortunate as he'd behave as if it was 1903 (assuming TM3 took place in 2008).

Despite how bad the endings are, a few somehow elevate it to so bad it’s actually good Some like Auger are stupid while ones like outlaw are prettt funny because of that ridiculous premise, and the hell Michigan was pretty clever too. These endings just need either a new premise or just add more polish

I may have missed this one. I only played TM1 and 2 and 4. But this was…wow, what? But on the flip side, I love the fact I get to see calypso with his VA from TM2. But wow, seeing this one… the sounds don’t have that punch that 2 had. 😮 My fellow man, you are awesome and the only one I know who is another Twisted metal fan! Looking forward to more!

I LOVED 4... after the initial shock of WTF characters. it was the only I could finish without cheats as a kid, it let you limited custom character creation (I could recreate Crimson Fury in a Lambo with better special) and the gimmicks in levels were fun... 3 I hated out of difficulty but some levels were real good.

God that Blimp level in this game might be one of the worst finales in this series next to the one in 4. Having to halt the pacing of the game just to look through this ugly looking level because the game decides to twist the already annoying Regen gimmick in a way that isn't well communicated to the player, via hiding switches everywhere that stops CPUs from continuously respawning. Like if you didn't make that connection by discovering a secret early on in the game that involved destroying similar looking switches, any first time player would be stuck on that level wondering why CPUs kept respawning.

That's the best way to experience it tho imo. Imagine being served raw unpolished greatness in 1 then perfecting the genre in 2 only to have your expectations sky high for 3 and 4 that let you down. Especially if you're a kid who had limited access to video games so you're burning your christmas or birthday gift for a pos game.

Gameplay: Memories were a lot better than actual fact later Soundtrack: Still Bad Ass, because I loved Hellbilly Deluxe by Rob Zombie, so Superbeast and Meet the Creeper were awesome! Story: Gods Awful, non-existent, and ridiculous even for 1990s camp standards... At least it isn't 4...

I bought this game right when it came out. I played 1 and 2 until the discs melted and I loved it. And I have a love hate feeling about 3. I enjoyed some of the gameplay even though it was pretty rough. And the soundtrack was awesome. I used to play the disc in my CD player. It's how I discovered Rob Zombie and became a fan. But this game has a LOT of flaws and is mostly trash lol. I still had fun with it back in the day.

i was around 8 or 9 when TM3 dropped. i had been playing TM2 since i was 6. i didn't really understand gaming studio's or anything back then, so i remember just being very confused on why thing's looked and felt so different with TM3. i do have some nostalgia for TM3, because you just kinda played what you had back then no matter what. But it definitely confused me on almost every level back then too, i didn't find out it was a different creative team until i got TM HO and watched the history of TM video when i was like 18. it all made sense after that.

Regarding using energy for reverse shots, it’s to keep you engaged in a battle and not simply run from battle the entire time. My brother was a Spectre main, and it was annoying as hell to chase him and only to get spammed.

You shared pretty much every single thoughts I had about the game when I played through it recently with every character and researched myself on it's development history. The good, like the bad and etc. Couldn't agree more on everything. Except the lil bit about TM4 at the end though which caught me a bit by surprise! Since personally I saw it as a big improvement in every single aspect to TM3. But again, missing the point thematically and also still not being as good as TM2 overall or TM1 in most aspects even. So I'm definitely pretty curious to see why it's the worse one for you and hear your opinion about it! Always enjoyed your reviews and I'm sure I'll enjoy that one too and you'll have an interesting angle on it. My best guess would be, based on your past reviews and your mentions of what you liked in the series (which among the many things was when the games playthrough were short and sweet), is that your biggest grippe would be that it overstays it's welcome by being 8 stages long on top of having boss fights at each stage? Which personally I both liked that aspect of it and kinda was annoyed at times with it too. Especially since I did it with all 22 characters + one custom car hahaha! But I guess that in itself shows my level of patience which is certainly more than most (and not that makes me better than anyone btw.) Now that I think about it, I think you mentioned that issue you had with it, before in one of your videos. But I'm curious if there's more to it too. So yeah, looking forward to that one! :)

If I had to rank all the Twisted Metal games from best to worst, mine would be: 1. Twisted Metal 2 (still a blast to this day) 2. Twisted Metal Black (dark, gritty and still fun) 3. Twisted Metal (2012, a different take but I still really enjoyed it) 4. Twisted Metal Head-On (very underrated) 5. Twisted Metal (original, yes it started the franchise but hasn't exactly aged well and they improved a lot with 2) 6. Twisted Metal Small Brawl (the mini golf course level alone made this game better than 3 and 4) 7. Twisted Metal 3 (Yeah, had some issues but I still think was better than 4) 8. Twisted Metal 4 (this was bad. Every opponent felt like a damage soaking sponge. The bland level design and boring characters didn't help.)
