This is the explanation from the book of jasher : 8. And Moses rose up to go to Egypt, and he took his wife and sons with him, and he was at an inn in the road, and an angel of God came down, and sought an occasion against him. 9. And he wished to kill him on account of his first born son, because he had not circumcised him, and had transgressed the covenant which the Lord had made with Abraham. 10. For Moses had hearkened to the words of his father-in-law which he had spoken to him, not to circumcise his first born son, therefore he circumcised him not. 11. And Zipporah saw the angel of the Lord seeking an occasion against Moses, and she knew that this thing was owing to his not having circumcised her son Gershom. 12. And Zipporah hastened and took of the sharp rock stones that were there, and she circumcised her son, and delivered her husband and her son from the hand of the angel of the Lord.

Yes I just read this and was stumped and was curious as to what the book of Jasher had to say. Thank you for posting. I know Yah is mighty and powerful and some think he is extremely harsh but without some of the apocrypha books we wonder why Yah did somethings that He did. Now I understand better.
@amyw41255 жыл бұрын
Also the fact the Zipporah recognizes why Yah was going to kill her husband she was obedient to Yah. I differently believe the man is to cover the woman and recognize the roles of a wife but at times Yah uses women to show the error in the man and to show that we are equal sense we do come Adams rib but our roles are different and both are important.

As I read through the comments here, I am SHOCKED!! I cannot believe how many negative and absurd comments I am seeing!!! I’ve never watched these videos before, but turned to this one today because I am reading in Exodus (for the umpteenth time) and never recognized the significance of these three little verses. (It’s crazy how God reveals more each time as you continue to read His word!!! ❤️) For those of you who (for lack of a better way of putting this) have “beef” with this pastor’s teaching, have you read James 3:1? “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” And in regards to God’s judgement - “It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.” (Deuteronomy 32:35) Why then do you weary yourselves with insulting this teaching?? I agree that it is important to test everything to make sure it is from God, but why so much contempt towards your fellow brother? “For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgement seat. It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’” So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:9-12) No wonder it has been said that “Christians” are the ones who turn people off of Christ. Those of you who were upset by the joke about Zipporah’s name, I’m sure this pastor would apologize for being a stumbling block to you. However, by getting hung up on this minor remark, are you not missing the point of this teaching? Similar to how the Pharisees were obsessed with the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the law?? I am so sad that this is the reality of the world we live in today. However if we’re all awaiting the same end (eternity with God in heaven and on the ‘new earth’) should we not be seeking to unify to promote the gospel to the unbelievers?? And as for those of you with concerns about the misinterpretations of the NIV have you read Revelation 22:18-19?? If in fact this pastor’s teaching is wrong, God will give to him what he deserves. And if you are so distraught by the misinterpretations of the NIV, perhaps God is calling you to devote your life to learning the Hebrew and Greek languages so that you might give a clearer interpretation of what He is trying to say?? Hmm? Abba, please help us, your children. There is so much division among us, but the one thing we all recognize is how much we need You. Please forgive us of our sins, and help us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Thank you for sending Your son to deliver us, as we know there is nothing we could do on our own to earn forgiveness. Please help us to be of one mind and to work together to be Your hands and feet in this fallen world. We love you, Lord! In your name we pray. Amen.

God already knew that Moses wasn't righteous (hadn't been following the law) before he called Moses from the burning bush, so why almost kill him instead of picking someone else whom he knew was already following the law? I think that is a better question to ask. I think it does show that God can use anyone he pleases but does have a higher standard for those (think of pastors in the New testament). It seems extreme to almost kill him but then again God's judgement is holy. It shows God's grace. Jesus didn't come to save the righteous but the sinners. Moses wasn't perfect and God knew that and just like our own salvation, we're not saved because of our own works but by Jesus' work on the cross (the blood sacrifice). The holy spirit only then transforms our hearts to become more like Christ. Moses is an example of this transformation. Correct me if I'm wrong though!

Ageeed 💯 and as I study the Bible I realize how God for his own purposes chooses the ones who are considerably unworthy of carrying out Gods plans , yet Jesus Christ his only son ultimately came from that lineage ,the tribes of Israel . As you work your way through each line of descendants starting with Abraham on down they’ve all done some things that one would view as unworthy of Gods grace and mercy but he used them for his glory eventually . He wants to do the same with us , we have that privilege now because of Christ’s blood he shed . To be used for Gods glory .

God sought to kill the son of Moses NOT Moses! First and foremost IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THAT GOD WOULD TRY TO KILL MOSES! WHY? We have Isaiah 55:11, "so is my word that goes out from my mouth -it will not return to me unfulfilled;but it will accomplish what I intend,and cause to succeed what I sent it to do.” GOD HAD TOLD MOSES THAT HE WAS CHOSEN TO FREE THE HEBREWS IN EGYPT FROM SLAVERY AND TO FULFILL THE COVENANT GOD HAD MADE WITH ABRAHAM! Ezekiel 12:25 repeats the message! So the WORD was sent and it could not come back void! GOD was obligated to protect Moses and give him all the resources necessary to complete that which Moses was chosen to do! The same with Jonah! Running and hiding could not stop the word of GOD and eventually Jonah fulfilled what he was chosen to do! This is also repeated in the case of David and of course Yeshua (Jesus)! Furthermore the original Hebrew texts NOT THE TRANSLATIONS is very important! The pronoun "him" is the key! The original Hebrew text gives us the answer! The pronoun "him" used in the original Hebrew is 3rd person masculine singular! So this verse is referring to the son of Moses, NOT Moses! Here are the original texts of both times it is used; First at "God met him" original Hebrew is (וַיִּפְגְּשֵׁ֣הוּ), Second at "to kill him" original Hebrew is (הֲמִיתֽוֹ׃) The original Hebrew is 3rd person masculine singular in both case! So with the pronoun "him" referring to the son of Moses, the verse makes sense! So God came across the son of Moses and Zipporah and was about to kill their son then Zipporah acted by circumcising her son to save his life! NO CONTRADICTION, NO CONFUSION! GOD IS NOT A LIAR! AND NOT A MAN THAT HE SHOULD CHANGE! MOSES WAS CHOSEN AND HAD TO COMPLETE WHAT HE WAS CHOSEN TO DO! Moses could not be killed or harmed or blocked in anyway from doing what God chose him to do so that the WORD of God would not come back void, but complete the purpose for which it was sent! Interesting point here is that even if Zipporah had not circumcised her son and God had killed his son, Moses would still have done everything the WORD of God had been sent to accomplish through him!

There is no scriptural basis for taking the life of a father who does not circumcise a son. Punishment for failing to be circumcised falls upon the child, not the father (Genesis 17:14). Moreover, the failure to be circumcised is punishable by exclusion from the Abrahamic covenant, not death (Genesis 17:14). If God sought to kill Moses for his sin of murder, as some scholars speculate, there is nothing about circumcision that atones for sin. Circumcision is a covenant, not a sacrifice that atones for sin. These speculative answers flirt with unscriptural principles.
@ShandyLiciousz4 жыл бұрын
True. It was very clear to me that God was going to kill Moses' son if Ziphorah hadn't acted. Like mentioned in Gen 17:14, the uncircumcised one should be put to death. Nothing mentioned about the father being also put to death. The confusion came because many bible translations added Moses' name where the original Hebrew scripture actually didn't even mention his name. This is just an example of the many other verses that was incorrectly translated thus confusing people and even whole religions. It's a sad reality.
@501Mobius4 жыл бұрын
Correct. Why kill Moses then? God had plenty of time to do it before they got to the inn. If God was really going to kill him he would give him a plague or a Thanos snap. As you said the only penalty for failure to do that is his children would not be included in the covenant. And we have seen that only means ones distant descendants will be numerous. Moses had two sons, do we ever hear of their descendants? One other strange thing is that Moses' two grown sons and his elderly wife all ride the same donkey to Rameses.

I'm going to have to humbly disagree with Todd here. The text doesn't give a reason for why the LORD sought to kill Moses. The circumcision was what appeased the LORD's anger, but the text does NOT say that was the REASON for His anger. Also, I think it's important to note that it wasn't just that his wife circumcised his son, but that she took the foreskin and touch Moses' foot with it, declaring him a "bridegroom of blood". Therefore, transferring blood from the son to Moses. Circumcision can be understood as a symbolic sacrifice of the son (see Gen 22). Read like this, the text should be obvious to a Christian: Moses was under condemnation (as all humanity is) and it was only through the blood of the sacrifice of the son that he was saved. This plays out again in Exodus with the Passover and the blood of the lamb.

My response on your religious views on circumscision Christians are no longer under the Abrahamic covenant nor the Mosaic law-Christ was the end of the law. The Apostle Paul made it clear in the New Testament that Christians no longer have to worry about circumcision, for it was a temporary sign of a temporary covenant: 1 Corinthians 7:18-19 Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

Newbie here. Honest question. I seem to have this problem frequently when reading the old testament/ hebrew bible. If that is what God meant, why wasn't it just written clearly. Like why doesn't the text just clearly say "I send Moses out, but because he did not circumcise his first son, I sent death upon him, for he did not do as I say." etc. Why is it written in such a riddled and obscure fashion, that it calls to question the nature of God? It is such a stumbling block for me. It seems that every Christian that has issues with the obscurity and conflict in the old testament just reframes it so it fits their ideology, but never admits, that the text says what it says, it's obscure and often represents God as fickle in mood. The obscure nature of the text calls us to depend on our own interpretations and fitting the story to our logic. When something doesn't make sense, we make it fit the sense we believe it has. It's honestly so difficult, to accept these very confusing elements of God in the Old Testament and reframe it to fit the image I want. Also, I thought circumcision was no longer necessary? And why would you be given a newborn shots of vitamin K? Doesn't God provide everything the child needs? I am honestly confused ...

Why do people always assume that when Moses killed the Egyptian that he was trying to deliver his people on his own accord at that point. There's nothing in the Bible that alludes to that at all. He just merely did not like the situation and he ended up hitting the guy too hard to kill him. And then the next day, he was still sticking around and didn't take any action to try to free his people. In fact, it was this people that got him scared to where he ran away. But people still try to assume that Moses tried to do it on his own and it wasn't time and God didn't sanction it, or whatever the reason, and he was stopped. But that's not at all the case. The story does not even make any indication that that was the case. The story is simply that he did not like how his people were being treated and he hit somebody and killed them and then he got scared because he was going to revealed and get in trouble so he fled. Anyway....

God was angry with Moses for failing to circumcise his son because his son will in danger of being out of the covenant of God. - Genesis 17:14 which would have been a great scandal since Moses being the leader should be the role model in obedience to God's law by having his son circumcised. God in his anger towards the Israelites also sought to kill all of them and make a new people from Moses' descendants. God shows no partiality to anyone even to Moses since God can raise another leader like Moses to replace him just as he can replace the Israelites with another people of his own choosing.

God IS NOT seeking to kill Moses here. He seeking to kill Gershom, the firstborn of Moses. -The previous two verses focus on firstborn sons. Firstborn sons are the center of attention. When you attack the firstborn you attack the center of the family, the future of the nation. -In context then in verse 24 and 25 the "him" his Moses son. -The Hebrew in verse 25 doesn't have "Moses" in it anywhere. It just has "his" , still in context of the firstborn sons. -Verse 26, Zipporah is talking to Gershom. She's his bridegroom of blood. -Moses is nowhere in this scene. This opens some parallels: -Going into Egypt, Moses' firstborn son is attack by Yahweh. Later on, in greater scale the all the firstborns in Egypt who do not display blood are attacked. -Gershom's publically displayed blood on the legs (doorpost of the body) spare judgement from the Angel of the Lord (Angel of Death), Later on all publically displayed blood spares the people.

Yeah, the him referred to is the firstborn. 4:22: Thou shalt say unto Pharaoh... 23 ... I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn. 24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him." God's seeking to kill Moses' uncircumcised first born, that's why they perform the circumcision. This foreshadows how they would paint the doors with lamb's blood later, when God actually killed the firstborn sons of the Egyptians.

This is the reason why i came here to watch about it. Out of confusion, i don’t understand why God sought Moses in order to kill him. As i did some research, it seems like Moses was not a righteous man and that made him not worthy of God’s appointed leader for the Israelites. His sons were not circumcised. How did his wife, Zipporah know that her uncircumcised sons were the reason why God wants to kill Moses? And when Zipporah circumcised her sons, he casted the blood to Moses’ feet. There are researches that “feet” used in the bible was a Hebrew literature that indicates the male’s sex organ. So the blood was not literally casted into his feet, but to his sex organ?

That answer doesn't cut it for me at all! Why would God have even chosen Moses in the 1st place if Moses wasn't circumcised & therefore wasn't righteous? Even more confusing is that Moses had murdered someone in Egypt, but then God chose him anyway but will now be so wrathful that he will kill Moses for not being circumcised??? Isn't murder a tad bit worse than uncircumcision? Why would God even consider Moses if Moses was an uncircumcised murderer that was also very argumentatively hesitant & resistant that it required that Aaron speak for him???

In addition, in Genesis 15, God made a covenant of a promised seed with Abraham and Sarah, in Genesis 16, he went in to Hagar and got a son, outside of God's covenant; God gave him a sign of circumcision as a form of discipline and deterrent to keep to God's will until the Seed is come Malachi 2:15. The eighth day signifies God's getting up from His rest after the work of creation, and rested on the seventh day, but had to begin the work of salvation of man, by shedding the blood of an animal, whose skin He used to cover Adam and Eve as a temporary covering to expire in 1000 years- (Methuselah-969 years, +Jesus as a man 30 years, and will be completed in the millennium). He began to deal with man on the basis of the blood from then upwards: Noah offered a sacrifice to God as soon as they got out of the ark, and His blood covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15, for his generation. That blood covenant was remembered in Exodus 12, a blood for a house. Then, the children of Israel rejected God i Exodus 19, and the blood covering was removed, so each now had to offer blood for his sins. Jesus Christ came and He was circumcised on the eighth day, thus fulfilling this act for all who would simply believe and plead His blood, which was later shed for the remission of sins for and restoration of man to God's glory. Jesus continued this work until the cross, when He died, was buried and rose again from the dead on the third day John 5:17, 19:30. So, no one is under any obligations to circumcise, either on the eighth day or or even not at all, as long as he is under the cover of the blood of the covenant that was shed- before the foundation of the world, and on the cross, and now it has been sprinkled on the mercy seat, as a constant reminder before God the Father, for the believer in Christ Jesus. . God's angel performs His word, so he would have killed Moses and his children that his father in law brought to him in the camp. Galatians 5:16-26, one cannot perform the work of Spirit, in the flesh- no matter who that person may be! Abel- first man to offer the first blood sacrifice to God, Abraham, the first man after Abel to be willing to offer the blood of his son as a sacrifice to God, so, God found in him a cogent reason to invest the sinless blood of His own only Begotten Son for man. Abel- God is my Father-Abraham - the father of many nations, in whom all the unworthy families of the world would be blessed! Thus, Moses had to bring his own blood, so he could live, until our Lord comes to offer His blood for all who would believe- anyone who insists on his own self righteousness, must bring his own blood, that is what will happen after the rapture, in order to be saved. God is no respecter of persons! Our God is Holy!

@J H God does what He wants as He wishes. Also, God only gave the sign of circumcision to Abraham as a contingency plan. In Genesis 15, God gave made a covenant for a promised Seed, through him and Sarah, specifically. In Genesis 16, Abraham went into Hagar, truncating the process. So, in God gave him the sign of circumcision as a deterrent as well as a means of discipline, so he wouldn't go and make another mistake. Then, in Genesis 17, He made a new covenant with him to this effect. The same reason his descendants must remain inside the 12 tribes until the Promised Seed comes. Malachi 2:15, and Simeon also was kept alive to see this promise fulfilled. Luke 1 :67-75, 2 :29-22.

What do you think about Galatians 5 Freedom in Christ & Romans 2:25-29 Circumcision of the Heart 25 For circumcision benefits you if you observe the law, but if you are a lawbreaker, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 Therefore if an uncircumcised man keeps the law’s requirements, will his uncircumcision not be counted as circumcision? 27 A man who is physically uncircumcised, but who fulfills the law, will judge you who are a lawbreaker in spite of having the letter of the law and circumcision. 28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. 29 On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart-by the Spirit, not the letter.[a] That man’s praise[b]is not from men but from God.

It wasn't Moses life that was in danger It seems that it was the child's life that was in danger in view of what the law of circumcision states at Genesis 17:14; that Zipporah circumcised the child because she realised what was needed to set matters right;
@takirid3 жыл бұрын
@J H For start Zippora is a Midianite, not a Hebrew. Her father Jethro was a Midianite priest who helped Moses and gave his daughter to him for what he had done. Were Jethro and family Pagans more than likely? But that all changed when Moses encountered the burning bush. that would have changed Jethro mind about the God of Moses, especially after the Exodus from Egypt hearing of the ten plages opening of the red sea and the total destruction of Pharaoh and his army. The answers are in the Bible. Read Exodus 18: 8-12.

I personally have two hypotheses: First: It was Moses himself attacking his own son, because in the same chapter verse 16 says: “He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him.” So, since Moses is as God to Aaron, we can hypothesize that he can be as God to all that he has dominion over them. Since his wife and his son are among his domains, so he is as God to them as well. My second hypothesis, I guess it is more logical, it is probably due to translation that made it so ambiguous. It is as follows: Most probably God meets Moses, the second part that says: “to kill him” is probably a command from the Lord to Moses to kill his son because he is not circumcised. And a similar of this happened to Abraham and Isaac, so it is not so strange to conceive. And Zipporah is forced to do the circumcision herself, because most probably she was not Jewish and circumcision was not in their traditions. Probably Moses asked to circumcise Gershom while they were in Midian, but their family did not allow for this and since Zipporah was among her own people, Moses was a stranger there, they were more powerful and their traditions did not allow for such an act, so Moses gave up knowing he will find time later on, that is why Moses couldn’t persuade them to do so. But now, since Zipporah is vulnerable and away from her people, it is in the middle of the night, in wilderness, far from her people in case she needed help; therefore it is the best time for Moses to do what God commanded him to do. Thus, she reproaches Moses’s approach and says that you have a bloodthirsty religion because your God requires blood. The fact that the prepuce touches Moses's feet, is that in the culture of Middle Easterners, feet is not considered very sacred, that is why in Luke 3:16 'says: "the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." that is another evident for how unworthy feet and sandals are. When Zipporah throws the prepuce and touches Moses's feet; that is an evident for how Zipporah was angry and how little she thought of the importance of prepuce to be so worthy that a father kills his own son over it. Thus, that is why it also says: "So the Lord let him alone." Since he is circumcised now, God doesn't bother with Zipporah's anger. I absolutely reject the idea that God came to kill Moses, that is very illogical and even childish. Why would God order Moses to go to Egypt to perform such a great deed and then come at night to kill his own hand? --- If you read this long comment and you reached here, I humbly thank you for being so patient and generous enough to give me your time.

PinkPeones I believe it was just a joke about the name. Not a very good one, but nonetheless not something to be taken seriously. Moses was taken under Pharaoh’s daughters’ wing “who adopted him as her own son” (Exodus 2:10). Most likely, he received the same education, same inheritance, and same military training as anyone in the royal lineage would. Moses tried to redeem or “free” a Hebrew he saw being beaten by an Egyptian (Exodus 2:11-12). Pharaoh tried to kill Moses because of his actions, which did not help his desire to free his Hebrew brothers and sisters (vs. 15). I hope this helps!

There is only one other passage in scripture that is more obscure. Yep. Gen 6. So any interpretation of this passage is an opinion. But some opinions are better than other. If you understand "father-in-law" in v.18 to mean "circumciser". Some records show the Median tradition that it was performed by the bridegrooms father before the wedding. If there was no father, then the father-in-law would perform it. Zipporah opposed Mose's circumcising 8 day old sons. Moses' was keeping home peace and didn't perform the circumcision of his son. We don't know which one. Also it isn't "seeking to kill" but rather as in Jacob's case, "putting in a death grip." And as such, Moses was not able to circumcise his son so Zipporah did and she cast it at the One "embracing" Moses. i.e. LORD

This is why I have a problem with the Bible. Just skimming through the comments I noticed almost every other person has a different interpretation of what the passage "really" means. God is said to not be the author of confusion and yet He couldn't be bothered to make the meaning clear so there would be no dispute as to what he was trying to convey with this story?
@mesimply25054 жыл бұрын
The Bible isn't the problem; people's own interpretations are. In order to read and study the Bible successfully, one needs to be saved by God & led of His Spirit. He will teach us all things, and that which we may still have a hard time grasping, He will reveal in time, typically through a faithful teacher. The explanation given in this video is a poor one, which is likely why much confusion has come about. To put it simply, Moses hadn't obeyed the commandment of the Lord to circumcise his son on the eighth day (the circumcision was representative of God's covenant with His people). His wife obviously wasn't on board with the idea of circumcision (which can be seen through reading the text), and this could have been the reasoning behind Moses shirking his responsibility. Moses was to lead God's people, but had to first be right with God himself. Because of his disobedience to God's commandment, he would be put to death (as will we if we don't submit to Christ as Lord and Savior). Seeing the angel up ahead, sent to kill Moses, Zipporah, reluctantly and with much anger, complied and circumcised the child, saving Moses from death.
