Why Dogs Dig? 5 Super Tips On How To Stop Your Pekingese From Digging!
Unless you stop your Pekingese from digging, he will turn your backyard into the moon - complete with craters all over the place. If you don’t do it, he will ruin the beautiful flowerbeds, the shrubs, and the trees in your landscaped yard.
So, why exactly do Pekingese dig?
Well, here are some of the reasons why they do:
To Reach Playmates
Pekingese may dig to reach playmates they crave for on the other side of the fence. Digging out of your yard so as to get to your neighbor’s dog could be an indication that your Pekingese simply needs a mate. In this case, the solution can be providing a companion - if you have enough space.
To Escape or Because of Boredom
Pekingese may dig to escape. They could be trying to escape to somewhere they think is more entertaining.
Burying Valuables
Dogs bury their “treasures” such as bones, food, prey, and toys. It is a demonstration of a dog’s survival instinct. If they were in the wild, this is how they would hide their food or prey and come back later to feast on it.
Separation Anxiety
When left all by themselves, Pekingese tend to suffer from separation anxiety. So, they would resort to digging so as to get noticed or deal with his anxiety issues.
5 Super tips to get your Pekingese to stop digging:
• Provide your Pekingese dog with loads of bones and other activities for him while you are away. It will help him to be satisfied in the yard. You should also have a shade and cool area during summer for the dog. In colder climates, a heated kennel or another bed area may be necessary.
• In case your Pekingese digs holes randomly in the yard, you can try to fence off or provide a “digging zone” for the dog. Try to encourage him to dig in this area and reward him for digging in the designated place. Also, provide plenty of soft dirt for the Pekingese to dig in. Since most dogs dislike digging in mud, filling existing holes with water will put them off.
• Putting some drops of pennyroyal essential oil, citronella or sprinkling some cayenne pepper or red pepper around the hole will naturally deter the dog. The pepper often works like magic. In fact, it can be used to prevent the dogs from digging around shrubs, trees, and flowerbeds in a landscaped yard.
• Try to exercise your Pekingese for at least 30 minutes before you leave him alone in the yard. Also, provide him with distractions plus other companions. It will help him to spend the day without turning to digging as a way of entertaining himself.
• If your Pekingese is a very enthusiastic digger, you may fill up the hole and put a layer of chicken wire over the hole before covering it with a layer of soil. The moment he returns to dig, he will stop because the chicken wire will frustrate his efforts. But you need to be careful so that the wire does not harm the pads on his feet- just in case he keeps digging persistently.
Now that you know how to get your Pekingese to stop digging, it is advisable for you to do it this early before it gets out of control. Obviously, you don’t want to find your home in a mess every time you come from work. Do the necessary now.
