My favorite being the American Rocket grunt you meet in the postgame for GSC/HGSS that shows up again in Unova. Him, Lt.Surge, and Fantina all speak in broken Japanese mixed with english words and phrases. Dialects are also just used to characterize the different npcs so they don't always reflect what region they are actually from, you mostly see that in the regions not based off Japan. When it first got revealed that the Galarian characters in Masters would have non-American accents, I know so many people were mad. Especially since, sans Gloria’s original voice actor, Dela Saba, none of the VAs were actually English, and the accents…definitely aren’t the highest quality. However, personally, as a Brit, I really enjoy them. Part of me was mad initially, especially since the Xenoblade series, another Nintendo IP, actually DID use English VAs (Leading to then also technically appearing in Smash Bros due to Shulk and Pyra/Mythra’s inclusion), and some interpretations of the character voices I heard which paid VERY close attention to ensuring accents were as accurate as possible definitely raised my expectations. However, even if they’re DEFINITELY not authentic, I find them very charming regardless…though some voices take some serious getting used to (Hop’s voice can be grating as it is, he doesn’t need to sound like he’s always shouting) Heck, I’d probably argue some of my favourite voices from Masters are the Galarians BECAUSE of the accents. Raihan’s shockingly-posh accent being a particular stand-out for me.

Playing into the accents can easily be a strength, even if they are unrealistic or exaggerated----take the legendary Team Fortress 2 for example. I personally would never be mad about the choice to give----any characters accents (as long as it's executed, at the very least, decently well).

@@OmarRodriguez-pj3qy I can imagine so, but it’s not exactly as common to see it happen in video game dubs, which are predominantly made in the US. As somebody from the UK my opinions on Masters' voice direction for the Galar cast are pretty mixed. Gloria (the original one), Hop and Sonia are pretty spot-on, A+ for authenticity. Victor, Melony, Bea and Gordie are also quite decent. Then there's weird ones like Leon and Nessa who could've been done better overall and some which have incorrect accents (why is Piers... Australian?) and some who don't really bother with the whole "Bri ish" thing like Raihan, Allister and Bede. What's interesting is that they gave Viola a French accent but nobody else from Kalos sounds as French as her. Apparently there was backlash for this at some point? It's kind of annoying that most of the Galar voices are done by Americans. I get it's easier to do it this way but it doesn't sit well with me. They do have accents, they just gave them American accents. Also, it’s very common these days for cartoons that have an English dub to get both an American English dub, which is done with American voice, actors, or Canadian voice actors as well as a British Irish dub, which is done with British and Irish voice actors. The reason why this is done is because for a couple of years, no right up until recently, British kids were growing up with American accents and were learning the American words for things and we are really struggling to communicate with their own British parents. The British parents son ended up putting a personal household ban on all American TV programmes to prevent the Americanisation of their own children. There’s also apparently a thing with American censorship and also teaching American ideals in children’s TV that just some of it isn’t suitable for British kids. So I haven’t seen the newest Pokémon anime at all last amazing Pokémon was the diamond pearl series. Anyway I think what they’re doing is they are making an American dub of Pokémon in a British dub for the British Isles. Either that, or we just accept the fact that the English dub of the Pokémon anime has always been done in the United States and Americans. Trying British accent. Sound really terrible unless you hire a professional voice actor and that is going to be incredibly expensive.

I can understand the main anime not having accents as it's harder to keep an accent consistent over hundreds of episodes (though they could have just as easily hired voice actors with the relevant accents). But it would have been nice to see (hear) the proper accents in the spin-off series.

OH GOD SOMEONE SAID GALAR. HI. it actually did personally bother me. Bede is a huge comfort character for me, during my first play through of Sword, I ALWAYS consistantly imagined him with with a British accent bc Galar itself is extremely British aesthetically. Bede wasnt really in the anime, but was in Twilight Wings. I was very sad when he had a American accent. bc for me, imagining him as British only to have them give him an American accent was like? idk it just felt off. GOD BLESS masters EX for having an actual British VA, Beau Bridgland voice him. I personally prefer the masters EX voice acting over the anime bc it feels more authentic, and I would like to see more of that going forward. if a region is based on a certain part of the world, go all out. also I know you stated its not your personal opinion but like, kids dont care about stuff like that? Ive never known a child like my siblings, friends kids ect that have not liked a character bc of an accent and in fact its the opposite. my little sisters and brother LOVED peppa pig for example and my youngest sister even said "I love the way they talk" and from what ive from my friends kids they love Bluey, and the Australian accents as well.

I think what could of happen would be to add UK idioms/naming conventions into the dialog so it comes across that Galar is slightly different then other regions. Like how in the US a softdrink can be called pop, soda, or sodapop depending on which part of the US you are in.
@Maxidos Жыл бұрын
I think that in the games different regions are meant to speak different languages but they can’t make them do it because the player needs to understand since in the school in scarlet and violet when you do the language classes the teacher talks about needing to understand people in different regions.

Well, after all, these are just fictional regions, they can be inspired from real places but they are still fictional places v:

Even if the language of the pokemon universe originates from a common place, regional dialects are unavoidable. We often think that language is only discint because people originate from other places, but language is constantly evolving, and the priorities and mannerisms of shared groups are reinforced by the language itself. I mean we aren't even talking about an accent from people who speak a different language when referencing Galar, these are BOTH English, and we're talking about the differences just between that.

Personally, I like Sonia without an accent because the accent for Masters Sonia doesn't really fit her (in my opinion). It sounds more middle aged instead of young adult. It also sounds more academic and professional. While even though Sonia is now a professor, she still likes more trendy things. If Sonia had a higher voice that suited her younger and more immature personality and look while still keeping the accent, I would've liked it better.

Honestly, having people with different accents in different areas is a detail I really like, and even in the US release, Galar pretty much stops just short of straight up using British English spellings anyway, so I prefer the accents here.
@oyoo3323 Жыл бұрын
And by British spellings, you mean international English spellings. There hardly any spelling convention for any words which are unique to Britain, they are for the most part, just standard international English spelling, used in basically all countries with English as an official language, and even nearly all other countries too, where English is taught at schools, with a few special exceptions, like former US colonies, like the Philippines. They often forget about it, but the US, both in its choice of English spelling, and many other ways too, is an outlier, not the standard.
@AzureGreatheart Жыл бұрын
@@oyoo3323 Sir, it originated in Britain, it’s represented by the British flag whenever language selection screens have flags on them, and it got spread around because Britain conquered large swathes of the world. The only reason the US has a separate form of English is because the nature of our country caused the language to change over time to the point where it’s technically considered a different language.
@oyoo3323 Жыл бұрын
@@AzureGreatheart firstly, not a sir. Secondly... Yes, and....? You aren't really contradicting me in any way. You are right. But your point is... what exactly...? All English originates from there, so of course that's going to be the case. It is only logical to represent a language by the flag of its origin point, so either the Union Jack 🇬🇧 (or the English flag in stead 🏴, which is my preference, but both make sense). It then follows that is makes sense to use the flag of any outliers by the the outlier's flag. The fact of the matter is, how does any of what you said contradict what I said? It just adds to it. My gripe is that yanks, and basically no one else, call ALL other English: British English. When really it's just normal English. It was never called "British English" spelling before that, and even now, no one in the countries in question calls it "British" spelling. Whether it be Australia, Jamaica, Singapore or (my own country) Aotearoa, no one there and here calls our spelling "British" spelling, it's just normal English spelling, sometimes called "standard" or "international" if necessary to specify. So it rubs us (non-UK English speakers) quite the weird way when yanks see how we (by which I mean nearly EVERYONE ELSE) write, and call it "British English". It also has the negative side-effect on them themselves, as many of them, due to this terminology, end up with the misconception that ONLY the UK uses it, as worse yet as I've often seen, they think that the way THEY write is the norm taught all over the world, often fueling their over bloated hyper nationalistic ego even further than it already has.

I like both of the accents, but it would've been nice to hear the same kinda mannerisms in the anime as they had in the SwSh dialogue. As a Bri'ish myself, as much as I hated SwSh as games, it was a nice change seeing certain words used, like saying "mate" more often or talking about how Leon is *pants* with directions. Some of the time it was a bit awkward, but iirc it was mostly good. Could've been interesting for them to go even further with the accents though. Hammerlocke was apparently based on Birmingham, so it would've been funny if Raihan sounded like a Brummie. Also obviously Gloria and the heavy Scottish accent memes that've been around basically since her design was revealed.

As someone from England, I hate the "British" accents they gave them in Masters, other than Gordie. He's the only person who actually has an accent that isn't clearly an American person doing the stereotypical English accent. All of the characters (other than Gordie) sound like they come from various areas of the South of England, with Gordie being the only character who deviates from that, taking a lot of inspiration from Geordie accents which are from a similar area to where I'm from. With virtually all of the accents being pretty much the same posh southern accent, the entire thing seems less like they actually took inspiration from the UK, and more that they googled what the stereotypical British person sounded like and said "yeah that'll do, the entire country is like that", which is incredibly lazy and stupid. It would be like if the Unova series has all of its characters speaking in thick Boston accents, or the stereotypical Texas cowboy accents because they're two of the most well known American accents, even if they are exaggerated. I just feel like if they wanted to do British accents properly, they should have rejected everyone in the actual voice cast of Masters and got some actual British people to do the voices. Except Gordie. He was good. But if they didn't want to do that then just go with the American accents because at least it wouldn't have ended up with the terrible "British accents" of Nessa and Sonia, both of which really distract me from my experience in Masters. Yes, I know this is incredibly petty and doesn't matter in the slightest. No, I do not care.
@rentor9230 Жыл бұрын
I feel the same. Also, the accents they gave them seem really forced and "offish", except for Gordie's.
@joshpohlner8716 Жыл бұрын
@@rentor9230 I know exactly what you mean. I think it's probably down to them getting American voice actors, who arent good at British accents, to do British accents. At least that's what I think happened.
