I grew up in Ontario too and am a little older than you. I remember when I played, in my teens, NOTHING caught my eye like some beat up "well loved" Copa Mundials. Sometimes the older guys (20+ yr olds,at the time) would go to practice with the tongues on the copas DUCT TAPED so theyd be extra floppy on game day. That, coupled with a thin white headband ( a la Francesco Totti), was the epitomy of cool back then, haha. I always loved the elegance of the Copa Mundial's, and that was even over the popular Predator shoes that were big circa 2000-2002. The "rich kid" on my rep team had some original predators and I loved them, but always preferred the classic looks that Adidas, Lotto, Puma, Diadora, Mizuno were offering. I had some Lotto Stadio's that I miss and cant find anywhere... WTF happened to soccer shoes now? I've been away for about 15 years and now I've come back to the market and dont recognize anything. Knuckleballs, footballs that have minds of their own, plastic weightless shoes, neon colours.....was i gone for that long? Josh, thanks so much for making your videos, I love watching them and love to get soccer news by a fellow Canadian. I got so much to learn! I gotta admit though, I just bought a couple of Tango's and looking to get some Copa's...was gunna try to relive my youth, and now i just look like I'm straight out of Argentina 78' . You echoed my thoughts man. I’m a Brit living in Canada and I too had been away from football for a while, in my case it was about 7 years (I’m 32). Growing up I was always attracted to the simple boot - All leather Kappa with green lettering, Lotto Stadios, black all leather Puma Kings. When guys were crossing over to Mercurials I still stuck to my guns. I once had a pair of white Predators which was the most extravagant I ever went and it didn’t last long (My mentality was always the same; simple yet elegant boots will go unoticed on the pitch but for me this always gave me the edge mentally; I wasn’t there to show off but rather to be a productive player in the team. In the end the player with the technique and disciplined hard work will always prevail over the flashy players. I wanted that balance of being noticed for the right reasons but to still carry the elegance of a quality Italian leather boot. Fast forward some years and as I was getting back into football here in Canada I took a stroll into Sport Check and was horrified at the plastic, light weight, pink/green bright coloured crap they’re selling now. I had to drive 2.5 hrs to get a pair of Copas which is what I wear now. Fortunately the Canadian lads I play with are old school as well so they all wear their copas. No head bands though...I’ll leave that to the Italians and Argentinians. I’ll never change though, in fact I’m considering buying Lotto’s Stadio ‘Made in Italy’ boot as an addition to my Copas.

I agree marketing is the reason why they do not wear Copa Mundials, but I feel the Copa has been losing popularity and kids do not know what they are; Adidas needs to start some marketing or else it will stop selling well. I personally hope they keep selling the Copa Mundial, World Cup, Mundial Goal and Mundial Team. They will always be my favorite boots next to some Predator and adiPure/11pro and modern Copa models

I pulled out my high school copas from ‘96 3 years ago when my kids started playing. The leather was good. Several cleats snapped off in an hour of play from dry rot. Also cracking on the plastic bottom sole. Went and bought another pair for coaching/playing with my kids. I hope to find an old guy team soon.

One of the very few boots that work for wide feet and for players with toes that have not been squeezed together by years of wearing restrictive modern footwear. Almost all the boots out there are very narrow in the toe box and mold your foot to the boot, rather than vice-versa. The Copa Mundial is soooo comfortable.

I've tried alot of football boots. I used to be Copa all the way until my mid twenties and I thought I'd try some new stuff. I can honestly say that the Copa is the best boot out of the lot, even better than the original Mania boots, well, perhaps not looks wise because they were ridiculous but still, the Copa oozes class and is so so comfortable.

They might be old, but... I have rather wide feet. Every modern shoe that I was able to try on at the local sports store was more or less difficult to put on and more or less painful / uncomfortable to wear even for 10 minutes in the store. The copas are so easy to put on, and they feel great on my feet (well not as great as my various barefoot-style shoes, but they are as good as it gets).

Copa mundial, Samba classic, Kaiser 5, my favorite indoor boots. I love the classic style, I see more and more people going back to the more oldschool look for their football boots/soccer cleats. I bought some samba's classic for futsal last season and this year 3 of mates switched to the more classic look. I just hate the weird colors look and feel of the modern boots.

I started playing soccer in summer 2018, and decided to get a cheap used pair of soccer boots. (Used is right - the previous owner never even cleaned off some grass). I never bothered to research what I got, but every time I played, the callouses on my bunions would be screaming in pain, partly because it was summer and my feet swelled up more, but mostly because it was a narrow tapered boot made of non stretchable uppers (it was an Adidas F10 TRX FG). The pain was so bad that I didn't want to play as much anymore. (Also, the other players complained when I stepped on them because of the hard rubber/plastic cleats - it seemed to be a soft surface boot). So I was driving by a soccer/futbol store and decided to stop in to see what boots they had. I had researched some wider front box boots before, but was still unsure of what to buy. I told the store's owner my predicament, and he immediately suggested the Cops Mudials. He asked my size (12-12.5, US) and provided an 11.5, explaining that soccer boots need to be reasonably tight to provide better ball control, and that the K-leather will stretch out over time. He felt my toes inside, and said I needed a smaller size. We eventually settled down on a size 10.5, which felt kinda tight in the store. But I trusted his advice that it would stretch out, and he said I could come back and exchange for an 11 if I worked them at home for a bit before playing and decided they were too tight before playing. And by golly, this is a great boot. What a fantastic suggestion by the store owner. My bunion callouses have actually shrunk significantly since I've played in these, and have never been in pain. My ball control is significantly improved naturally, considering I never practice and only play on games (looking to practice drills more in near future). The only downsides: - the price. I was looking to spend no more than $50-60 American, and ended up spending $125. I have literally never spent more on any sports equipment, but for my foot health and comfort, they were well worth it. - the sides tend to stretch over a game, and need retightening periodically. Otherwise, these are a great pair of beginner boots - the golden standard -, but also great for advanced players as well. And they're especially great for wider feet because the K-leather stretches over time.

Since the begining of its exsistence there are other brands that produce compareable boots to copa mundials. However copas are more consistant in supply and available almost everywhere in the world. I remember bought them in the early 90s when they were very popular. I had to pre order.

I must disagree when you said: the boost won’t make the player better or worse. Of course it does, every player has a different shape of feet, the way you hit the ball will never be the same for them all, reason why pros nowadays has bespoke measures for their “popular market “ boosts. Mundial was the best boots I ever had, I’ve played from 10-14YO as amateur and 14-18 as professional in Brazilian main league. I have returned playing last month after 12 years out of the pitches, bought 3 pairs of adidas boots and none of them gives the feel and comfort neither fits the way I hit the ball when shooting strong, for short passes any boots will do, but for long passes, chips, etc always take the boots that best fits your feet shape. Example the legendary old school players, they are all still using their old models boots but refreshed to nowadays (colours and models name) for their events and friendly.

Kaka was wearing them prob cause his bad knee and playing on turf last year in orlando, he switched to mizunos mid year though. I just bought today my copas, I looked to all of them and non of them made me feel that street football spirit, tried pink ones yellow ones all different colours and shapes non of them seemed quite all right then I saw this old fashion cool ones and tried them on, Perfect love them right away I play indoor football, futsal, recently changed for outdoor was not quite sure about the boots, they were kinda more expensive but I pretty sure I made the right decision and so i google it and find out this video so Im now more sure about them, anyway Im not saying the all colorful ones are not good like you said its about personnal taste, anyway I think in the end of the day its all about marketing. Josh I totally agree with these assumptions with the copa mundial. However, the copa 17.1 is a new silo in the adidas line so why don't they use the athletes under the adidas brand to wear the 17.1. I honestly don't see any athlete wearing the 17.1 (correct me if I am wrong).

While id love them to have more cushioning, maybe similar to the adidas busenitz which is essentially a copa upper with a spezial bottom, there has been no other boot that my flintstone feet fit in so comfortably. Im going to try a knit pair the next time i buy a new pair, but still going to go with the same boots ive went with since the early when i started playing. Ive tried the tiempos, the predators, a couple others for indoors(i usually go with a street gato or busenitz) but i always go back to these.😊

I was recently wondering about this issue. I bought the Copa Mundial boots last month after switching from the X 16.3. The adjustment remains massive. I feel like I've lost a yard of pace due to the leather and the ball flys off my boot when I pass or strike the ball. However, the control and precision of the Mundial is worth the compromise (I'm a sloth). Maybe the pace of the professional game has become quicker which is why lighter boots have become the norm. There was a big debate here in England back in 2004 about lighter boots and its correlation with metatarsal injuries (caused by the Rooney injury). It would be interesting to know your thoughts on future boot innovations. The impact of recycled material on performance etc... Thank you so much for the video.

My daughter wears copas and she's 11. I admit, size 4's are VERY hard to come by. She saw old videos of me in my youth wearing copas and she asked if she could get a similar pair. I said, "absolutely". She loves them. They're comfortable, they look nice and she plays well in them. However, I don't think it's about the shoes. She's a great soccer player b/c she loves the game; not b/c of the shoes. She likes them b/c she feels like she has control of her game wearing those.

How did they hold up durability wise? I’d wear literally anything that didn’t split apart after a few months of damp grass training. So far Adidas have held up the best but I use the cheaper ones cause I can’t take another 100 dollar loss. I’d rather pay 40 and replace them after they start splitting from the sole.

My brother loves wearing copas - but I honestly can't stand playing with them. I find it difficult to pass and shoot accurately and it feels clumsy, but they are amazingly comfortable and the first touch with the soft k leather is great. I guess you just have to get used to them or at least learn how to change your technique to adjust to them.

that's weird. I find new models, very plasticky and clumsy, slowing you down, contrary to mundials or kaisers, which are like a second skin. Much better and precise shots and passes, not at all less power. Maybe need to work on your pass and shot technique?

just ordered a pair of kaiser's instead of copa mundials, i felt that the kaiser leather fits better on my foot over the kangaroo leather weird but its all about personal pref, and that expensive does not mean everything. thanks alot.

@@rcmains4237 kaiser are my favorite boots! Holds great for long time, just remember to care for the shoes - clean, wax etc. and will serve you long (depends how often you play, which surface etc, but they are more durable than modern models).

Saying that different boots don't offer an advantage is simply not true, the boot manufacturers even specifically manufacture different types of boot to provide different advantages. For example, you can hit the ball harder with different materials and different thicknesses, you will get more friction in your hits with different boots which improves your ability to put spin on the ball or to control the ball.

They design and market different boots that are targeted towards different styles/positions to justify having that many different lines. Variety is great, the more the better, but there is no shoe that you can currently buy that will put you at an advantage in comparison to another player wearing a different shoe. What you're describing are differences in fit and feel, which are preferences, not elements that will improve or enhance skills and abilities.

I'm a 40 year old high school soccer coach and my players get a kick out of my Copas when I tell them that they're the same shoe (not exact same shoe of course) that I played with in high school. I've never found a soccer shoe that has a better fit than my Copas. Copas till I die lol.
