"Paint dries. We know that, we've all painted a wall, set down the brush, walked away and let it dry.... But what most people just don't know is that if you sit and watch paint dry it can be extremely exciting. How exciting? Well that's what we don't really know. First of all, you have to take into account a number of factors. Just how good is the paint? Well we have to DISCERN whether we're talking about the elite brands, take your Olympic One or your Anne Geddes Baby Paint. OR we could be talking about your bottom of the barrel, Wal Mart Level gutter paint, cost you 5 bucks and you buy it cause your wife was getting on your nerves, she WANTS this wall painted, you're trying to get it done cheaply and efficiently so she doesn't kick you onto the couch. Well the difference, and anyone in THE BUSINESS will tell you this, is that one drys faster than the other, one drys smoother than the other, and they both offer two COMPLETELY different watching paint dry experiences. Olympic One is fast drying, dynamic and markets itself very well, take it from me, that paint knows what its doing. Anne Geddes, to a similar extent also knows how to market itself. How well does it market itself? Well we haven't really seen that yet, its a newcomer, still learning the tricks of the trade, BUT... (*Holds up finger*) give it time, and we could see a serious problem emerging in the interior paint division. Now.. can we say one is superior to the other? Well that we just don't know. Until these two compete wall to wall, we just can't know. Now... Paintbrushes are another factor that you HAVE to take into consideration...." - Chael. P Sonnen on Watching Paint Dry

Boxers do train and cut weight but they are doing strict dieting and the cut is done the entire camp, so when fight week arrives, they do little dehydration. Unlike mma who cuts 10-20 lbs in one week or less before weight ins. Injuries are relative rare in boxing because the training is not that aggresive to the body, whereas in mma you do grappling, wrestling, striking, workouts and even some strenght and conditioning, which eventually will take a toll to the body.

Smaller gaps between weight classes so less cutting. Injuries do happen but they just reschedule and everyone forgets in the end, and because undercards are much less important in boxing no one cares about the other fights that get moved or go ahead on a smaller show on the original date. Example of missing weight just this year: Scott Quigg in his WBO world featherweight championship fight against Oscar Valdez. Examples of injuries postponing fights: David Haye vs Tony Bellew II, from memory wasn't Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko meant to happen on Dec 10 2016 but Klitschko got injured so they knocked it back. Examples of injuries cancelling fights in boxing: Tyson Fury vs David Haye (twice), Tyson Fury vs Klitschko II.

Back in RINGS MMA, Bobby Hoffman winning 2 fights earlier refused to enter the Ring against Fedor who dismantled his 2 opponents quickly. Hoffman never entered the ring and left. Fedor won becoming the Tournament champion.
@1Leggo9my9Eggo26 жыл бұрын
So let me break this down. Firstly there are more than just a few examples of main event fights being pulled for one reason or the other, usually it’s when they get popped but injuries also. Secondly, boxing training consists of completely different conditioning and training techniques in one maybe two fields of specialised martial arts (striking). This means drastically lowering the risk of injuries during sparring, considering how much more you have to train for in MMA. Thirdly, boxing has many more weigh classes in between that make it easier for fighters to fight closer to their natural weight so the weight cut isn’t ever really an issue, but even then some boxers miss weight, just rarely main event ones. Lastly, I can never remember a time when a fight got cancelled in boxing and the opponent that didn’t get pulled got the W, in fact I don’t think it’s ever happened. Maybe in wrestling it has because in wrestling it’s usually a tournament on a given period of time where they don’t have to draw any money, in professional comabt sports there’s a paying audience therefore you have to either rearrange the fight or bring in another opponent. NFL and other sports alike are team based sports so that’s a bad example but maybe something like tennis would have been a better one...again that is a tournament scenerio so of course you can’t reschedule. These things are not exclusive to MMA, and chael didn’t put too much thought into this. What I will say is in MMA, the people within it aren’t as experienced and skilled at certain things like they are in other sports, it’s a growing sport that is still jumping hurdles like the others used to have to.
@awilson966 жыл бұрын
They do, but they have more flexibility with rescheduling cards. UFC have set cards regardless of a fight already being made. Cards are made in boxing off of a fight being created. Also, more weight classes equals less cutting, and MMA incorporates more complex movements, and is ultimately more dangerous to train.

Either that or ban any rankings. If you only want shows, make shows. If you want rankings. Use forfaits. Happy to see Chael stepping up to the plate like that. I wish more fans would be so outspoken about this issue. And I wish more fighters would say outright that the belt is worth nothing but money. And catching that belt has nothing to do with rankings.
@AlexVerbruggen6 жыл бұрын
They could also make seasons. Which would help avoid champions picking fights that suit them. If the UFC wants a fighter they should value him without having the counterpart names. You think he's a possible champ. Pay him like a champ. Not always the best system like soccer proves there is still a lot of corruption when players are payed royally. In my mind fighting and money is just a bad combo. Fight only works for self defence and honor :) Nonetheless I still like watching fucking skilled fighters. I don't like watching knock outs that much any more. Love more tap outs. Like Khabib would say. A tap out machine :)

I agree somewhat however there is a more likely chance of an individual pulling out of something than an entire team. A team is less likely to forfeit considering they have backup players to substitute those who are injured for an event.

MMA's brutal. I can hardly kick a heavy bag without my knees popping and crackling. It affects your hips and back too. Plus all the BJJ. In boxing the main event is a Co promoter to the point where they kind of ARE the show. Not so in MMA, where the show is "UFC 240" where the event of the ufc putting on fights is the show you are paying for, not just the main event but some other fun fights too. A forfeit clause would be a nightmare in a non-tournament format, you would never know who the "legitimate" best fighter in the world at a weight class ever was. It would be annoying. The nature of a fight may not change but the story line would be very hard to follow unless you convert to a tournament format which takes too long in MMA and as for one night tournaments, may be considered dangerous and not ideal to samction

It's probably because in boxing the range and variety of movements utilised whilst sparring are alot less than your typical MMA fighter. Whilst possible, it's alot less likely a boxer will tear knee ligaments or break their foot etc. Plus they wear big gloves, meaning less arm and hand fractures. Also the rounds are alot shorter, so boxers spend less time at the limits of their physical endurance - at the point a boxer is counting down the last 10 seconds of a round an MMA fighter is only just at the half way point. And as your body tires, your risk of injury sky rockets. And if your a boxer and start to feel your hamstrings tighten, you can potentially coast through the remaining rounds by clinching, using the ropes to support you whilst you defend etc. If you have the same issue in an MMA fight you have nowhere to hide...you can't clinch, because you'll be open to knees, elbows and worst of all take downs (putting more pressure on your leg and knee ligaments), you can't use ropes to take your weight, because against the cage your essentially trapped unless you clinch and then reverse the positions to enable you to get away. When you don't have to worry about takedowns, a slight knee injury isn't a big deal. You can fight, not at full effectiveness but still competitive at least. You can ofset the reduced defensive footwork with good head movement, ring positioning, opportunistic clinching etc. Now imagine your inside octagon with reduced knee stability. Your take down defense will be terrible, and once your opponent realises you have a problem they can target your knees also if they choose using legkicks, oblique kicks (which were able to destroy Robert Whittakers knee with one blow by Yoel Romero and put him out for basically 1 year). Boxers have very little risk of taking damage to their lower body, since strikes bellow the belt aren't allowed, whereas MMA allows for kicks, knees and even elbows and punches to the legs if the opponents position allows them to connect. Bottom line...an MMA fight has more ways of hurting you due to the vast amount of extra strikes and techniques allowed vs boxing (I totally forgot about leg locks, knee bars, heel hooks etc - which if the opponents holds on to for longer after you submit or you try to act tough and refuse to tap, can easily damage your ligaments, tendons and joints and put you out for half a year or more)

I can forgive injury but not failure to make weight... unless it's a super last min thing.

Other combat sports have only a single discipline to train for. MMA has multiple disciplines to train for, and therefore increases your chance for injury in training. I do agree with the problems of missed weight and injuries do need to be addressed, but with a multiple discipline combat sports there will be an increase in injuries that prohibit the athlete from competing.

How'd Klitchko ruin boxing exactly?
@cattycats46 жыл бұрын
he means Klitchkos ruined boxing by not fighting each other and having 2 "champions" promoting the ever increasing expansion of new belts and ambiguity into who is actually the champion.

I assumed he was talking more about his fighting style. Vitali retired long ago and Vladamir was the undisputed champ in HW for 10 years, if anything HW was the most obvious division of who the champ was. A lot of people have a go at Vlad because he was huge and didn't have great style or great opposition

I don’t think level of opposition was their fault at all tbh, I think a lot of Americans say this because the klitchkos rarely came to the US to fight meaning North America lost a lot of interest in heavyweight boxing and boxing in general. The world doesn’t revolve around America though...much to their disbelief

The MMA ego is different than all the other combat sports. The MMA mind has been shaped in a way that allows them to continue to be paid in the future even tho they didnt feel the best one week or day so they pulled out of a PPV bout. Dont allow that to happen so easily and it wont

What % of MMA injuries are shoulder/upper boddy injuries (not spine)? Most injuries are during practice of martial arts other than boxing. Particularly BJJ.

I was the biggest boxing fan, from the days of watching it on Tuesday night fights on USA, ABC on the weekend, it's dead, I don't care if their main events don't get canceled because their main events suck. Promoters and managers build their fighters' records up by fighting bum's never putting the great Fighters against other great Fighters, I don't care about boxing anymore because boxing didn't care about itself
@edpark546 жыл бұрын
Let's be honest: In boxing, fighters miss weight all the time in mega fights, you just don't hear about it ... cause they're mega fights. Roy Jones Jr missed multiple times, promoters didn't care and public did know. The weigh in was NEVER a 'main attraction'. Plus, there's juice in boxing, usada ruined UFC
@Boudica2346 жыл бұрын
I think the #1 cause for cancelled or missed weight fights in MMA is the gamesmanship of extreme weight cutting in MMA. Being physically heavier and bigger than your opponent seems to offer a bigger advantage in MMA than boxing for instance. If Floyd Mayweather cut extreme weight before a match and then showed up 20 lbs heavier on fight night, I dont think it would be any advantage at all (in fact would prob be a disadvantage). Whether real or not, MMA fighters believe added size gives them an advantage in the clinch, with grappling and in power striking. Hence their goal is typically to stay as big as possible before a fight, dehydrate themselves to a dangerous extent right before the fight to barely make weight, then rehydrate immediately after weigh-in. This usually results in fighters weighing 10-20 lbs. more than their listed weight class at the time of the fight. I dont have any answers but do wonder if same day weigh-ins might help.

I think if a fighter misses weight once, he gets a big fine. If twice, larger fine and forced to move up a weight for good, no exceptions. If a 3rd time happens suspend them for a year and a large fine. That’s at least a start. Weight cutting should NEVER be a reason to pull a fight.
@marionmoseby74906 жыл бұрын
Kurt H Theres better ways to do it. All they have to do is adopt the hydration test system that one fc uses.
@tpnurdle16 жыл бұрын
Khabib Nurmagomedov That would certainly help. I think fighters are also simply trying to cut way too much, Especially the week of.
@marionmoseby74906 жыл бұрын
Kurt H Its definitely getting out of hand. One fc did it perfectly. They weigh you, but they also test your hydration levels to make sure you didnt cut very much water weight. Nobody is cutting 20lbs in ONE like they are in the UFC
