A few weeks back, maybe a dozen songs or so ago, I ended up in a petty comment argument here with some naysayer who kept insisting "he's still no Dylan." My point was that he might be even better. It gives me great pleasure to watch as Jesse Welles continues to develop into something more than Dylan ever was. On some level, that guy has to be eating his words. You've got this, man; you are the stuff of stars.
@apex.amatuer5 ай бұрын
I was just saying this to my Mother today!
@somerandomnification5 ай бұрын
I don't mean to be contrary and I'm certainly not trying to start an argument, but I agree that Jesse "ain't no Dylan". But I also think Dylan ain't no Welles. We can have two troubadours from two generations without having to decide which one is "better" Dylan's not writing better songs than Welles today and Welles wasn't writing better songs than Dylan 50 years ago. And if you still want to argue about who's better, Dylan ain't no Guthrie. If we absolutely have to compare Mr wells to some antiquated folkster, I suggest we go straight to Woodie Guthrie and consider them comrades in arms instead of trying to decide who's "better". Keep on keepin' on, Mr Welles. I'm really enjoying the music.
@pocket83squared5 ай бұрын
@@somerandomnification Sure, apples and oranges; music is relative to some extent, because it involves the subjective experience. That said, Welles is still better. Whether or not I'm correct in feeling so, Dylan always struck me as artificial. He was one of those I-do-it-for-the-money type of performers, and as such, much of his music ranged from empty free-association to downright contrived. Even the political stuff. Just my opinion, man. Note that Welles isn't even monetizing this album-quality content. Dylan wouldn't play at a birthday party for free.
@somerandomnification5 ай бұрын
@@pocket83squared Like I said, I'm not interested in starting an argument. Welles isn't going to write "Blowing In The Wind", but Dylan also isn't going to write "Why Don't you Love Me". I'm trying to give Mr Welles credit by comparing him to Woody Guthrie instead of Bob Dylan, because (in my opinion) Mr Guthrie has been more influential in folk music than Dylan. What I'm really trying to say here is that it's unfair to try to compare Welles to Dylan in the very same way it is unfair to try to compare Dylan to Guthrie. Dylan built on the music that Guthrie made in the same way that Guthrie built on the music of his predecessors. And Welles is following in that tradition by building on both Guthrie and Dylan. Please note that I'm not talking about virtuosity in any case here. the thing that makes Guthrie, Dylan and Welles stand out is their artistry with lyrics. It's their ability to put what we're all feeling (but unable to articulate) into words that sets them off as masters (in my humble opinion).
@pocket83squared5 ай бұрын
@@somerandomnification It's okay! You're already embroiled in an argument, whether you want to be or not. No worries. And _I_ started it Besides, I understand and agree with your point. To an extent. Also, I too recognize the difference between virtuosity and artistry. Take for example Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston; the latter has a far stronger voice, but the former was better able to express vulnerability, which made her original the more beautiful version (of "I Will Always Love You"). Second example: Eddie Van Halen was one of the most well-known guitar virtuosos ever. Guy sure could rock. Yet the music he's in can be hard to enjoy, because it ends up being dominated by his showboating. In contrast, Lindsey Buckingham takes one for the team by incorporating himself into the bigger picture of harmony that is _Fleetwood Mac,_ and as a result has contributed to creating one of the greatest musical acts in history. But here's my point: we _can_ compare apples to oranges sometimes, because a sweet apple can still be better than a bitter orange. All mixed up together, all things considered: virtuosity, artistry, style, et cetera, I still see Welles as having far more potential than Dylan ever did, even at his best. But we'll both have to wait and see what happens.
