This is one of the most inspiring videos I've seen all year. Your suggestion of keeping a diary is brilliant, and I wish I'd thought of it before. I'm teaching myself Latin right now (I will get around to Korean or Japanese eventually), and I plan on immediately implementing it.

My experience when teaching English in Korea is they're so darned used to speaking like how people speak in the book as opposed to how people ACTUALLY speak the Language. It's frustrating speaking English to Koreans because they feel as though the way they speak English has to be perfect or they can't speak it at all. I have to constantly tell them to MAKE MISTAKES so they can get better but the culture doesn't allow mistakes in getting better. It's very frustrating.

OMG!! How could I haven't seen your lecture earlier? Watching today, I am very moved. Maybe that's how you analyze problems clearly and present solutions clearly... It's amazing. When I was over 40, I went to undergraduate and graduate in US. Can you imagine how difficult it must have been? Thank you for the video, I have many thoughts in response: 1) I currently go to school with two Koreans in an electrical & automation program -- the woman is brilliant and diligent while the younger man is a bit lazy (like the other younger men in the program, they just want to play video games outside of class). However, his English outpaces hers because he is more willing to speak "poorly" and fail. I teased them both about it, how her grades are much better than his, but his English is improving faster because he is less shy about trying, while she seemed more concerned with accurate speech. Similarly, years ago I taught outdoor education at a summer camp that hosted some Chinese exchange 'campers'. One particular kid was the first to stutter through a personal story that made the entire camp break into laughter (it was supposed to be funny). You saw the energy inside of him light up! From then on you could tell he had and enthusiasm for practicing English that outpaced his ability to speak, but he progressed so fast. He became a favorite of everyone, no doubt because he was willing to try and speak from his heart. 2. Yeonmi Park is someone I was introduced through more alternative political thinkers like Michael Malice (Author of "Dear Reader" a book about his visit to North Korea). What's interesting is her English isn't *that* fluent (she makes a lot of mistakes) but what you said is very accurate: She is speaking from a place of deep spiritual conviction, and she reminds me of the young Chinese boy from the summer camp -- her passion exceeds her ability to speak English, but you can tell it *pulls her language skills forward* . She will continue to improve because what she has to say is more important than how she says it. 3. The many cultural differences are interesting -- I am dating the woman from Korea that I mentioned I went to class with. I have found there are subjects that are clearly less freely discussed in Korea than America. But interestingly, I feel like some things she says come across as much more rude in English and it is hard to explain why. We have mildly offended each other for similar translation errors. Something she says is too blunt in English, and vice versa. Today she said Chinese is easier for English speakers to learn because it has a similar word order, and I said I thought it was more difficult because of the "tonal words" -- she disagreed and I said she might be a little biased since it shares some things with Korean. She looked up "bias" and said that it was rather insulting in Korean. I had to explain its a fairly neutral word in American English (like the "bias" of people who debate whether New York or Chicago-style pizza is better). Another time she told the young male Korean his haircut looked bad (he did it himself and it did look bad, but I would have never told him that) -- I said that was "brutal" but she defiantly insisted Koreans are this direct with each other when it comes to their peers. I love languages though and have been learning Korean outside of my classwork for a couple months now. I feel discouraged sometimes since Korean is one of the more difficult languages for English speakers and I really wish I could devote full-time immersion to learning it. But I love videos like this and appreciate the thought you have put into it for helping speakers from two different language backgrounds. I keep a daily journal already and think I need to try to at least write a few basic sentences in Korean to describe my day. Thanks again for the video!!

I learnt so much from this as a native english speaker who wants to learn korean. Your observations are astute and very insightful. I'm really impressed by your practical assessment of what the problem is for most koreans who are trying to learn english. But one thing I'd like to point out is the importance of slightly separating a country's cultural values from the English language. A lot of the times, people associate english language with american culture, just because America is a prominent country in the world that uses English natively. But English is spoken natively in so many countries too (although, most of the time together with other languages), including African, European and Asian countries. One unique example is Singapore, which uses English as a native language, alongside Chinese, Malay or Tamil language (depending on your ethnicity. I'm Singaporean by the way). So because of my asian cultural values, I relate more towards 'cute sarcasm' rather than 'smart sarcasm'. But yeah, it's true that Korean's extremely age-based, authority-based culture really makes it even harder for koreans to learn another language, especially a language that traditionally or often has cultural roots that is so different to korea's culture. Anyway, you are a really inspiring speaker. I can feel your passion in the way you speak. This inspired me in my journey to learn Korean. Thank you!

정말 수많은 영어 관련 동영상을 봐왔지만 이 영상이 정말 저에게 감명깊게 다가와 처음으로 댓글을 남깁니다. 저는 캐나다 어학연수온지 어느덧 4달 정도 되가는데요 항상 유투브를 보면서 어떻게 문법을 공부해야할까?, 어떻게 스피킹을 공부해야 될까? 어떻게 하면 빨리 영어를 습득할수 있을까? 라는 스킬 위주에 관심을 가져왔습니다. 그렇게 공부하다보니 당연히 지치는게 당연했고 의지가 떨어질때 즈음 이영상을 보게 되었습니다. 정말 영어를 어떻게 접근해야되고 어떤 마음으로 공부를 해야될지에 대한 본질적인 이유를 잘 설명해주셔서 다시 도전이 됩니다. 외국까지 와서 한국식 영어로 습득을 하고 있는 저 자신을 다시 반성하면서 내가 왜 영어를 배우려는지 어떤 의지로 어떤 목표로 영어를 배우려는지 다시한번 생각하고 공부를 시작하겠습니다. 정말 좋은 영상 감사드립니다. 모든 영어배우시려는 분들 연수생 분들 학생 직장인 분들 화이팅입니다.

Hi! This us such a strong message for every learner in this world. You last tip, "Be humble" is like an awakening beacon for me. As I was surrounded by adult who has an extremely huge ego, I unconsiouly absord theur behavior and assume that at such a young age, I will no longer learn how to do thing that I love most. And thats expressing myself. When I was a kid, i thought that I was too old to enjoy life and should act like an adult. Y'know like being serious and constraining to keep life to themselves. But change and situation happens. I got to let go of that past and start living my life as if today will be my last. Thank you for reminding me that learning is a long-time process and should never be stop. Im learning Korean right now and still practising my English. And if given the time and dedication, I hope to learn Spanish too!

This is powerful...educating and illustrating through empathy, kindness, understanding, humility and deep, deep insight rather than fixating on perfectionism or checkpoints/test scores. Your humility and open-minded shows, and it is so so refreshing to experience a video with so much quality like this. You're a genuinely caring person, and it shows in the way you teach such things. And creating dialogue...to be able to speak sincerely and continuously/flow naturally, you must create and practice this inner dialogue until you can interact with others. From the experiences I had during my undergrad uni years with international students, I completely agree with you. When I would talk with Korean or even Chinese students, I could tell they would overthink what they wanted to say to me and try to say it as complex as possible, with fancy vocabulary that made it even harder to understand. I told them, "just say what you want to say in the simplest way. The more people that can understand you, the more fluent you sound because we are able to understand you." Jokingly I added, "if I wanted to decipher unnecessarily complicated sentences, I would go finish reading my political science articles." Another thing to, is the fear of making mistakes. I speak English and Spanish, then learned French for a whole year at uni, and making mistakes is just part of the process of learning--on par with your point about learning English to impress others. I had to emphasize to the international students, even people who only know English make mistakes, don't sweat it.

I agree and can relate to knowing Asians who are afraid of making mistakes and want to avoid it entirely and just be accurate. But I explain that is the most important part of the experience. Making mistakes (and knowing that you'll make more), and not being hard on yourself are traits that Westerners have in abundance. To them it's a minor bump in the road, not a stone wall.

I know this video is a year old but could you explain something about Korean humor to me? (I am American). On Korean TV shows & radio interviews they will interview a celebrity. In the past, the celebrity might have said something embarrassing or stupid or funny. The interviewer then asks the celebrity to relive or reenact the stupid thing again for the audience. They ask the celebrity to do this thing AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. Sometimes the celebrity is very humiliated or annoyed but must pretend to laugh and perform. Then the interviewer will ask other guests to imitate the funny/stupid remark and it goes around the room! And everyone thinks this is funny or OK. I have seen this happen many times on different shows. To a Westerner, this is very strange humor. I don't think any Hollywood celebrity would stand for it. They would probably be very angry and insulted and walk out. I hope you can explain this. Thank you.

I agree with you 100%. 'Making mistakes' is THE most important part when you learn a new language. Most Koreans try to not make mistakes when they speak English. It's like a baby trying to be 100 meter sprinter without even mastering how to stand up and walk. Learning English should be fun and it IS fun from my personal experience. I feel so bad for those who's been spending so much time AND money, and still having trouble expressing themselves in English. Hey, fellow Korean folks! You wanna express yourself in English and communicate with native English speakers? Stop STUDY-ing English and start LEARN-ing English. Babies don't think about the grammar of their languages. Just be like a baby picking up simple expressions, and then expand your understanding of the language. Feel the sound of English. Look at the facial expressions, hand gestures and changes in their tones and pitches in different situations.

English exams have made them rich, so they don't want to accept a communication English environment.

Key point 를 잘 지적해주셨습니다 . 실질적으로 써먹을 수있는영어를 해야되는데 그런 시스템 자체가 지금까지 잘되지않앗던갓같습니다 영어를 수단으로만 생각하고 목표한 점수만 받으면 그 이후로 끝 . 주위에 미국에 갔오신분들보면 토익이란 시험은 아무소용없고 한국에서만 요구하니까 실전에서는 필요가 없다고 하더라구요 정말 영어를 사용하는 직업이면 모를까 그렇게생각합니다 저도 영어를 잘하고싶은 사람으로서 첫째 우선 목표가 영어를 해야 하는이유 영어를 시작한지 늦었다고생각하는데 그래도 꾸준히 포기하지않고 할수있을까 처음엔 여행을 가고싶어서 영어를 배웠지만 그게 다가 아니구나 느꼈습니다 이목표가 실행이 되고 내가 정말 영어를 배워야 하는 이유는 뭘까 남이 하니까 아니면 와국인과의 이야기해보고싶어서 일반적으로는 이렇게 사람들이 비슷한 목표를 가지고 있다고생각합니다 정말 나는 꼭 영어를 해야되이럼 뚜렷한 목표가 없으면 중도에 포기하거나 할필요가 없어지는 것같습니다 그래도 저는 한가지 자기계발을 위해서라도 영어의 손을 넣지 않으려고 하고있고 하고자하는 목표를 달성할수있다고생각합니다 중간에 시청하다가 너무 공감 되서 글을 올립니다 ^^

One point about Westerners, particularly Americans lack of formality that is important. In the US, it is ESSENTIAL to our culture that everyone is supposed to be EQUAL. (I know that isn't always true in reality). Nobody is "special". We are taught this from children. Even the President is not above the law. George Washington said The United States will never have a King. We are taught this very strong lesson. Your older siblings get no special treatment. You can be smart and respected at 8 years old or 80 years old. Conversely, a 60 year old idiot is an idiot and if a 14 year old wants to call him an "idiot" that's OK. People EARN respect, we don't just hand it to them because they were born at a certain time. And you must continue to EARN respect through your life. We do respect our parents, grandparents, teachers BUT if they are wrong, we tell them. Respect is not age driven in the US and though there are economic classes, it doesn't make you a better person. Again, this goes back to our Constitution and Declaration of Independence which shapes the way we think about privilege and class. I hope that helps. As a Korean, your explanation helps me understand how Americans can interact with older people in a comfort and casual manner. I've been recently a book on the U.S. history in Korean because I want to learn the country's history. The book said Americans, at the early stage of building their country, labored to keep themselves from centralised government system like the one in British Empire, and they also eventually fought with it for their freedom. I think history or culture generated by it affects how a nation behave in their own country and it lingers longer than we expect it to do. In the past, Korea was significantly affected by China's confucian philosophy that's also really popular in China. And Confucius emphasized that people had to respect their parents, and it made a country flourish and desirable. He believed that a country couldn't be healthy without the respect of family members, especially in the elderly in a family. Because he thought if a family, a minimal part organizing a country in his thought, couldn't be in harmony, it would inevitably lead to the discord of a country. Also, because he lived in the era when China was in a state of severe war and wasn't peacefully united yet, he urged people to reclaim morality and humanity which is a basic and essential part of the country he deems good. His sermon of "admiring your parents" came out of this background. The trace of it still exists in my country, not adjusted to a new era, whether it's good or bad.

Jm Lee - very interesting! Please correct me if I am wrong but Korea had a king (?) at one time and wealthy, powerful families. Then Korea was conquered/lost wars and taken over by Japan/China (?) for awhile. It's a little hard to understand sometimes. And Korea fought back against the oppressors and became independent. But the people of Korea never had a REVOLUTION against the Korean royals. If that is true, that is the difference. Even though Korea is modern, the descendants of the royal families are still there. Now they own companies instead of castles. The system of hierarchy is still in place to a certain degree. If Korea had a revolution at the same time America and France did, things would be different. Again, please correct me or educate me if I am incorrect. Thanks!

It is very interesting . I was actually thinking of something of the things you mention. Like how asians think and talk to strangers.. I have paid fully attention to Koreans and it's quite easy for me to distinguish a korean from a chinese person now . Which was very difficult for me long time ago. Now I can tell right away from meters away. It seems like they show one face but thats not the truth of them. They always show one nice and polite personality in the beginning. As for other nationalities , people tend to be more genuine and honest. They don't care what others think about them and they are just who they are.

맞는 말씀만 하시네요. 영어를 외국어로 배우는 나라 중 영어를 가장 잘하는 나라는 네덜란드, 북유럽사람들이죠, 영어를 잘하는 나라들은 공통점이 있습니다 1.영어와 그나라언어가 비슷하다(일반적으로 언어가 비슷하다는 것은 문화도 비슷하다는 거죠 이 동영상에서 계속 하시는 말씀) 2.인구가 작은 나라라서 영화나 tv드라마 같은 것들이 자급자족이 안되고 미국이나 영국의 영향이 굉장히 심하게 영향을 미친다. 여러가지 상황에서 영어를 자연스럽게 쓰게 되고 쓸 수 밖에 없다. 해외에 나갔을 대 아무도 자기나라의 언어를 쓰지 않아서 영어를 써야한다. ( 한국사람은 해외나가서 한국사람 만나기 쉽죠 특히 북미 호주뉴질랜드 와 일본 중국의 경우). 반대로 영어를 모국어로 하는 사람들한테 한국어 일본어 해보라그러세요 10년배워서 안녕하세요 감사합니다 곤니찌와 아리가또고자이마스 밖에 못할 겁니다(조금 과장 ^^)

안녕하세요~ 학교 성적을 포기할 순 없으니 학교 공부도 함께 병행하되, 학교에서 배우는 교과서나 유인물 외에도 본인이 적극적으로 재미있는 영화 대본, 시, 노래 가사 등을 찾아서 공부하거나(요즘은 유튜브, 블로그 등 무료 자료가 널렸으니 찾기 어렵진 않을거에요~), 또 좋아하는 영어 원서를 찾아 읽는 것도 좋은 방법입니다. 즉 본인이 시간을 내서 학교에서 가르쳐주지 않는 공부를 스스로 해야합니다~ 이렇게 함께 병행하다 보면 학교 공부에 꼭 심혈을 기울이지 않아도 점수를 올리기가 쉬워집니다. 전반적인 영어 실력이 느니까, 시험도 감이 잡히는겁니다 :)
