Arcsys has done this thing before. If no one speaks up about it nothing would be done about it. They have the inability to leave well enough alone and buff characters that needs nerfs and vice versa. If you played BB you’d see this pattern right away. They are terrible at balancing.

While I think the overall patch is, for the most part, okay (from a casual perspective). The biggest issue for me is how ASW is continuing to buff already good characters (and not going back on previous overkill buffs) by making fundamental flaws just not really matter that much; - Ram was weak at mid-screen pressure and combos (less so after Wild Assault), now she's the GOAT at midscreen and the corner with meterless confirms/pressure extenders - Potemkin was designed to have a tougher time against characters like Asuka to balance out his strike/throw's massive reward- flick now insta wins the neutral - Johnny is untouched even when his 15f dash and guard crush offense are known to be problematic - Goldlewis doesn't need to setup drone for some setups and can just kill you whenever he wants with back-to-back typhoons. - Leo gets backturn relatively safely with the pseudo Dire Eclat from pillar

I mean it's not every character. Just the characters that are supposed to be high damage. GL, Ram, Sol, May, Johnny, and Nago are the main ones with big damage buffs

Ram Calvados didn’t need the damage buff that move already melted health bars. Trying to compensate for lowering the damage by raising the damage of certain moves quite literally misses the entire point of lowering the damage

As an Axl player, I've been left so dissatisfied by them straight up making my character nonfunctional that I'm just probably not gonna touch the game very much until they fix all his new issues or a character I am otherwise interested in playing drops (mildly curious about Unika, and maybe I'll try Venom, we'll have to see). 6K doesn't even actually combo into Rensen 90% of the time despite that being the big thing they tried introducing him doing this patch, it's shameful.

One positive is that they are moving a step closer to unique character identities instead of some characters being better versions of others. Jack'O 100% copied milia's homework and did it better. Ram may be better than testament still (esp if they keep the sword issues) but she now plays different enough to justify picking playing testament.

i do not like ky's 6h change, it removed a lot of his (imo) fun and interesting combo routes and generally made his combo game much more linear. i would have preferred that they give the move a large lingering hurtbox or something similar instead of increasing the recovery on it. foudre arc nerf is not quite as impactful since it was mostly only part of his easier, low damage combos so i don't mind it nearly as much. ky does have new mix and whatnot but i think given the option i would rather have the season 3 kit. i think it doesn't need to be said but di infinite is corny and boring, although even post patch cse is going to be crazy

I love how Ram has just been a constant balance headache since launch. Too good at everything and too simple, then they buffed every mid range/balance character to her level and got to a point where nobody had any weaknesses.

Its weird- the dash cancel servant shoot is something, but it's not like she wasn't crazy at pressure already... why reduce her set up oki options? As a Millia player, I felt straight up insulted. At no point in this game's lifecycle had she ever been in the conversation for top tier, but for some reason they decided to shoot her. Like at least with what they did to Zato, he was previously very frequently seen in top 8s, and the addition of a mechanic like WA meant they could have possibly pre-nerfed the character so that he didn't become an instant demon with his new tools. The fact that: a) Zato has been dead for over a year and Arcsys clearly doesn't wanna do anything about that (seriously I can count on one hand the number of Zato players I've seen in tower since the S3 nerfs) b) Millia got shot for no reason c) Asuka got nerfed way way more than he should have d) Potemkin gets his kara cancels removed and all his sauce with it e) Axl also lost a ton of his cool shit leads me to believe that they just don't want people playing hard characters. I'm sure Jack-O is next on the list to catch a crippling nerf

Same here fellow Millia mains. Like why nerf Kapel? It can be air thrown and has counter play. It’s not our fault that people don’t take the time to learn her weaknesses. She has bottom 1 health on top of nerfed 6p, nerfed wall spalt resets, and Kapel which is how she literally survives being in the air. It’s not a traditional projectile so why nerf it? You have to be literally on top of the opponent. The buffs she got while nice aren’t really what she needed while other characters like Ram and Goldlewis become juiced beyond belief and she gets nothing to compensate her actual weaknesses and struggles that she’s always had. So now she struggles even MORE. She can literally die in one mistake in this game from someone mashing huge buttons while we have to work arguably harder than almost any other rushdown character in the game atm.

I feel like they aren't noted by most, but the fact that Rainwater doesn't vacuum anymore alone killed a lot of my best combos with him, and now it feels like I'm much more desperately chipping for damage with stray hits that hardly convert and using Sickle Flash a lot more to play the keep away game, which isn't fun for either party, even if it's what Axl is meant to be doing. Though, let's not forget Nago's sauce also being absolutely robbed from him, on the note of Potemkin. I don't know much about Nago besides my friend who played him before dropping him this patch, but the fact one of his best combos is now heavy slash -> Roman Cancel -> heavy slash -> Roman Cancel -> heavy slash is such a robbery when he's another super hard and super cool character that got gutted of that complexity, just like Potemkin (even if he was a pain to play against at times). Glad Bedman? at least got a buff as another difficult character that desperately needed health more than anything. Might even at least be mid tier to make up for all the other hard characters that have lost their sauce (still trying to determine it myself, but he absolutely feels a lot better to play than he used to).

And yes i did play competitive, i entered about 20 tournaments, won 1, coolest moment ever, final was against a godlike Potemkin, who im sure is really pissed right now.

I think season 4 is trying to go a proper direction to bring new life into Strive and Dizzy is fun but there is CLEAR oversight that was missed before releasing the patch that hopefully, the Guilty Gear team at Arc Sys will PROPERLY look from fan feedback.

The other reason why the Guilty Gear strive community is upset is because of the update cycles of the game they are downright bad. Because of this we know this problems are not gonna go soon. This also makes Arcys more hesitant to make strong characters because of how long it takes for the game to be patched . Arcsystem needs to patch the game more frequently because if they don't it would take a long time bringing some broken characters to reasonable strength. For example Happy Chaos it took 1year to finally bring him to reasonable strength. It was just 2 patches but took an entire year to do. For example if the game was patched every 2 weeks we wouldn't be as upset as now because the community would be like there gonna fix the balance issue in no time because of how frequently it's patched. I feel like the community also needs to demand more frequent patch cycles.

Woah woah woah, balancing the game too quickly will only serve to make the community more upset. The best thing to do is to have a balance every time a character releases, that way the devs can focus on both balancing the characters and making new characters at the same time, while also allowing us to have enough time to get used to the character changes and respond accordingly.

i think they needed to just straight up nerf certain top tiers. I think asw is too scared to upset the players of higher tier characters but if they become less of a problem they will inevitably upset the players so they end up nerfing chars then buffing something else, sometimes too much. also even ignoring bugs PLUS 30 ram sword toss is RIDICULOUS. i am not the best at the game but it feels like my skill does not matter when she throws the sword then i am blocking and then she can loop it afterwards

Testament got 1 new change and a worse 6P (one of our few good tools mind you) and arc sys called it a day. I get that we got a post-evo buff but it brought us from low tier to barely mid-tier. I don't know if arc sys will ever give DLC characters new moves, but testament is definitely one that deserves it. Out of all of season 1, they're definitely undertuned

I play Millia, and actually, after a day or so of adjusting my game plan without kapel, Millia still seems viable. The back airdash cancel is a really great move in practice. It's best used for crossing up your opponent faster with a high low when you double air dash past an opponent or simply jump past an opponent, then back dash it puts your opponent in a position to where they have to guess what side you will attack. The main downside is that it can be easily anti aired, so you have to play a bit of mind games with your opponents with kapel and turbo fall. Air dust cancel is good but not really that useful so far. Mizarh is really nice change, but im having issues canceling it into other moves sometimes when in an online match. Offline It's perfect. it's just hard to get heavy disc out without accidentally executing winger. (That's probably just me) i honestly think she's ok in general, but her damage and health nerfs seem to be a bit much she already has the weakest supers and lowest damage. It feels like ASW doesn't like Millia. I believe if they gave her one more special move, like and upwards, kick out of mizarh or a slight buff to her other special moves to make them easier to execute like turbo fall canceled into other moves like kapel or bad moon , she'll be in a very good spot.

What i dont understand is the dissonance between how some characters were treated and others, some were plunged into gg strive rev2 some were just nerfed Like Nago and ramlethal have been buffed basically every other season since released (ram JUST got a new move ffs), but here we go, reworked Goldlweis and pot were doing fine but theywent full "fuck it we ball" and reworked them to make full use of their identities But then you have entries like asuka or slyer, or jako and millia (from what ive heard) that where just nerfed to make them more balanced or in line, despite not necessarily being top tiers. Or take sol that DID get rework, that basically made him BY FAR the most boring and simplified character in the game, removing basically all intersting maneuvers he had but giveing him YET AGAIN new combo routes by making fafnir and vortex little more than combo tools. Also gunflame and bandit revolver are usless basically. Im not necessarily against any ONE of these changes, but its just that all of em in the same patch just... doenst make sense, some characters got shafted and some are playing stive 2. Of course the biggest problem is that the next patch in woth we can hope for some fixes, is coming on 3-4 months amd we know arcsys doesn't go back on they changes

Personally I like the patch but a degree of overturning with Ram Pot and GL. To me these characters have distinctively been not only changed but hurt matchups extremely. I play most of base roster and season 1&2 characters. My main being mostly Zato and Bedman. The recent changes I feel have put both of my mains in a good spot to where people don’t hate playing the matchup anymore. However with the afformentioned characters I dislike how one to two mistakes completely destroy my gameplay experience. Zato vs Pot u loose to two pot busters and since new changes it’s almost impossible to react and jump out even on hard knock down. I don’t know if that’s how they intend things to be. But I think they need to fix the things like defense for characters again. Mainly fix bottom 5 health characters. Also Millia just feels so sad now.

The problem with new Kapel is that we get a knockdown, but it's not a good one. :\ Millia can only get high/low from that HDisk and opponent can 6P out of it. Not to mention that Kapel -> j.K is inconsistent and depends on height, space and stuff. And if you don't link anything after Kapel, it's punishable on hit. There are ways around it and stuff, but it does feel untested and unpolished. Also j.D buff. How much damage they gave it completely changes our optimals. :\ At least we get to say that we are "dustlooping" now. :D

I think the issue more than anything…more than changes…are certain key aspects being taken away constantly & more than that, taken away for no reason or feel malicious. Additionally arcsys is so horny for fan favorites yet hardly give lesser played characters some sauce they’ll enjoy for more than a day (testament stain throw…we been waiting months bro). Then they nerf certain moves and just leave them broke like limp noodles. The bugs is whatever…it’ll get fixed, but them constantly so excited to keep Hc super strong on every front along with Johnny and slayer. They completely ignore our concerns and frustrations then just decide we don’t know what we’re talking about wtffff

Season 4's been kinda iffy for me. I love the intent behind Ram's new direction, I love all the non-bug aspects of new sword toss, and I'm eager to see how her new pressure gets optimized and developed with time. I even like that they made her 214H slower so it's harder to just send it in neutral with RC! But I don't think I'm a fan of her other special move changes... like I'm having trouble trying to understand why they felt the need to change Daruo, rekka, and flip. Daruo feels more restricting to use, rekka 1 loops look so ugly to me, enhanced rekka guard crushes feel pointless, and making flip an even faster overhead feels even more pointless without a similarly ranged low to also threaten with. After they fix her bugs I'll give Ram some more time, but until then I'm glad I at least have Elphelt!

Also, I wouldn't say I like the Idea of being unable to pick up swords. 3 Reasons: You get them back after wall break or getting wall broken so it's not really a proper resource. Because they give you a flat damage nerf for using sword moves, they effectively punish the player just for playing and make any combo route that does not rely on swords more optimal. And it makes Calvados as a wall break option almost unusable (if the developers ever double down on Ram actually needing the swords for stuff)

The reason this game feels boring is because it's too shallow and too fast (by too fast I mean rounds are over too fast. Compared to Xrd this game feels sluggish to play). Overall, I'm losing confidence in ASWs ability to deliver on any kind of vision for the game.

Especially since Xrd, by the end of its run, effectively perfected what Guilty Gear was trying to be. If these things were not applied to strive, then it would have just been Xrd.5. I know that that is basically what people want from a fighting game sequel, but considering that I already have Xrd, strive would have been far less appealing if it was just more of the same when we already got a perfected version of that. Granted, that is a subjective opinion, but I still think that this was the right direction to go into. This patch however, is a different matter.

As of season 4, I've quit the game until they fix both the bugs and the balance. After 3 years I'd resigned myself to the fact that arcsys just didn't want Millia to be strong in strive, but I didn't expect them to completely gut one of her most essential tools considering she was already bottom 5. Especially since Kapel loses to airgrab if you know it's coming. Oh and they also cut down her HP for some fucking reason. Meanwhile, the same handful of characters get slap on the wrist nerfs and compensatory buffs patch after patch after patch. That's to say nothing of the bugs. Maybe I'll check back when they release a balance patch in 6 months, but until then arcsys can get fucked. my refund request for the season 4 pass was denied, but I think I might press steam support a little harder because I really really really don't wanna financially reward the devs for this kind of shit.

Heavy caveat, I am a floor 5-8 player. I am really happy with the changes and really enjoy the game. I love Dizzy. I don't play her but I find her to be a very fun looking character and enjoy the new mechanics and I don't mind playing against her at all. I don't love all the bugs but I have to say, I don't think they make the game unplayable to me. I don't play this game for money, I can totally get how it feels for those that do. Overall, still feel like this game is going strong and I really enjoy playing it

I'm floor 10 with most characters and celestial on my main, this game has been fun its whole lifespan and so far I'm loving season 4. Playing competitively has gotta suck but I wish floor 10 and below players didn't just echo all the complaints the top influencers have. It's so sad to see a floor seven player drop a character because someone put them low down in a tier list.

A lot of people doom about Pot, but he's just not locked behind doing kara back megafist to optimize his damage anymore. Losing kara Pot buster and garuda sucks for pressure, sure. However, not having a high execution ceiling to optimize his damage, just makes sense. It is definitely weird playing him now, but it's not THAT much of a difference in terms of approach. Oki is still pretty similar. I'm not sure what to make of some of his button changes and the armor for Potbuster being so late(I guess it's for a scenario where you're getting the opponent to try and do a delayed button or counterpoke a tick throw?) though.

Removing the kara cancels makes him boring. It killed his execution and identity in strive. Not to mention hundreds of hours of practice. If he is better or worse is irrelevant, the changes are bad. It's not fun and just makes him the typical boring big body grappler.

@@blastimbre You know there's another big body character who heavily relies on kara's and just got a huge buff to his kit that increases player expression and allows for some pretty sweet conversions. You can just pretend 268->grab during guardcrush is a command throw.

I think the idea for kBMF juggles being necessary to optimize damage only stings because slayer just has damage that absurd with almost none of that execution. For every optimized pot route there's always a far easier equivalent that only loses 20-30 damage or so.

I think in regards to making characters easier late in the games life, they might be expecting at least a decent sized new boost of players from the upcoming anime. Ram is one of the characters they have explicitly said is gonna be in it, so it makes sense they'd make her easier.

I play faust, and i feel like he just didnt get enough. The new move is borderline worthless. None of his moves actually got more damage, only some of his items. The spit changes are actually good and open up more routes and things. The j2k nerf felt unnecessary. Guilty gear strive season 4 is out and all i got was this lousy golf club

I think the reason is they are wasting too much resources on 3v3 mode (no one asked for btw) instead of making the game good Oh and obviously as a axl player i hate how they ruined my beloved rainwater, i think favlurite move in fighting games...

@ I actually agree, I think he’s a better character. He’s NOT a fun character, or at least not fun in the way I’m looking for. I loved pot cause he broke free of the stereotype of the clunky grappler. Just adding damage and armor to everything is *fine* but now he feels like every other dime a dozen clunky grappler. That’s not even an insult, I’m a Master Gief in SF6 and have a blast with the character. But Strive Potemkin was by FAR m favorite fighting game character of all time. If I wanted to play Gief I’d go play SF6. He’s not hitting my dopamine in the context of guilty gear. There’s nothing making me want to ever touch that character.

I like the concept of carving out niches for each character, but yeah, it's been a pretty big adjustment. Saying you want lower defense and then increasing damage a lot of the time seems weird.

This feels almost like the "preaseason" in games like League of Legends. Nothing is balanced, a lot of wild ideas are getting thrown out there, then after that they lock everything that works into the game. I think they don't do much if any competitive tournaments during the preseason though.

I was dooming at first but the more I played the patch, the more I was able to be won over by the decisions team red has made. It was really a few nasty and disgusting blemishes that needed exploitation by the playerbase for the lack of polish to truly show.

I think the patch is a lot of fun but I play nago and Bridget. I think nago is so much better and Bridget is a lot more fun with steerable rolling movement. I do think dizzy is a pretty annoying character to play against but that’s probably just a nago thing

Just to be pedantly precise: More interactions is not the same as less damage on average. It SHOULD mean less effective combos. If someone can kill you with 5 jabs, that is more damage, but if those jabs dont combo, then you have to interact at least five times. I understand they aren't delivering this either, I just wanted to highlight the difference in concept.

I'm wondering there's some uncertainty internally whether or not there's going to be another GG in the pipeline soon with ASW. Furthermore, Strive is the conclusion of the story for the main characters. I feel like the developers wanted to extend the life of GGST as long as possible due to this uncertainty. Because by reworking all the character mechanics, with confidence that everything will be smoothed out in good time, and that the game being rebalanced in a good way, this game's life span has just been extended a year or two. The other thing is that you can tell that there is not enough man power in the developmental side. This patch is very ambitious, for them to even accomplish so much in a year is amazing. So I wouldn't be surprised if they release it with expectation with bug reports, as if they're using their own player base as QA for patch.

Arcsys is a AAA game studio that's been around for decades, coming off of their biggest commercial success in the history of the company. In a year, they've put in 3 characters (all of which were returning so they at least had a character design to start from), 3 stages, one minor balance update, and another balance update that's so incredibly poorly executed that it has more noticeable bugs than all previous versions of the game combined, which is to say nothing of the actual balance changes. If that constitutes an amazing job, you need to raise your standards. This kind of output is usually only considered acceptable among Star Citizen fans

@@0therwisesleep522this comment shows a lack of understanding of 3d modelling especially the 3d modelling style of guilty gear. To get this style the 3d models need to be really well crafted. ASW is probably the best company at achieving this style a lot of other games will use the same actual model and just change things like hair and clothes, every character model is made ground up and it must take a really long time. On top of this arcsys is more AA than AAA i feel like it doesn’t get as much funding as games like street fighter which end up having the same amount of new chars and stages in the same amount of time. The last 3 characters have all had probably the highest level of animation out of the entire cast. Animating characters like aba in the way they did is a really amazing artistic achievement. 3 characters in a year is probably just because of the sheer amount of love and passion put into those characters. They could have probably released 4 or 5 different characters with the same level of animation as one of the base roster characters (already amazingly animated) but have chosen to consistently attempt to one up themselves

The main story of like sol/asuka is indeed concluded, but at the end of strive's story mode they showed happy chaos being ready to make a mess once again. Also the focus of the series is slowly shifting from sol to sin. After the anime, we are probably getting a new gg more focused on sin and on the anime

I just wanted to point out that game dev is actually very hard. 200 isn’t that much and not all of them are working on ggst. They also publish a bunch of games so id say it’s probably like at most 50 people. Also 3 is actually still quite a lot for a fighting game. Like street fighter has also had like that many. Tekken has had WAY less and bandai namco is totally giving that game way more funding, that game LITERALYL refuses the models from the last game. Who do you play btw you seem super upset about the new season.

Funny because if you are a Pot player, Ram is actually your best matchup now since you can flick Sword Toss AND the Sword Explosion. Ram has to get in your mid range (which happened to be Pot's BEST range right now.) in order to start her offense. Pot and his new HFB setup could literally ended a round in 5-10 secs once he got it going.

@@Basswire HFB reduce recovery allow you to do some NASTY tick throw setup RPS with your long range normal such as 2S and 5H or 2H as well. 2S and 5H on CH would guaranteed a HFB>Bustour easily thanks to increased Pot Range. Instead of doing a Long HFB, you could do 2 consecutive short range HFB with about the same distance. HFB also carries the armor from HF in this patch so they have to double guess as well. Talking about guess, your enemies will HAVE to guess either Bustour or Heavenly because they used the same directional input now.

I stopped playing GGST after this patch. Literally stopped playing and picked up DBFZ instead. And this is after playing since season 1.
