WHY Fake Speedruns? Speedrunner Reacts to "The Worst Fake Speedrun on YouTube" by Karl Jobst

When it comes to faking and cheating speedruns, so many people ask IF a speedrun is fake, but never HOW to stop fake runs from cropping up in the future. This reaction video uses ‪@karljobst‬ 's video about ‪@badabunOficial‬ and ‪@TavoBetancourt‬ as a lens to look at WHY people fake speedruns. Contrary to popular belief, "just to look cool" may not be the prevailing reason.
Arguably speedrunners fake speedruns for a number of reasons, and I'm looking at going into those more in depth in the future. If you'd like to see me look at more fake speedrun videos, let me know via comment below!
Don't forget to check out Karl's channel here: / karljobst

Hello again friends, thanks for stopping by! Sorry if this got a little rant-y, I just have a lot to say about the speedrunning community as a whole and wanting it to be a welcoming hobby that doesn't chew people up over time. I hope videos like these can at least help get that going in the right direction. If there's anything else you want me to check out, feel free to let me know! I'm also still working on OC too so that I'm not just using everyone else's videos to sound off on. Have an excellent day!

Ya know, I used to watch your videos. Then you decided to throw a tantrum, directed personally at me, in the comments of one of your videos because I put out an opposing opinion as a talking point. It was the first time anyone I watch has ever responded to my comment, and you acted like a toddler, insulting me and telling me how wrong I am for thinking differently about some speedrunning topic. It was really disappointing, cause your videos are actually very well put together, and I was literally just putting out my thoughts. Let me tell you, I don't take the internet seriously at all, but I was very taken aback. I hope you respond better to dissenting opinions now than you did a year or so ago. EDIT: Oh, wow. I got curious, so I checked. Almost exactly a year ago on your Goldeneye vid. Happy angerversary! I forgot that you had deleted your comment berating me afterward too. Good thing my comments still exist, and if they don't after today, then you're still as petty as before. Again, I hope you really have improved and don't treat other people like that. @@roguedude1299 It's directed to Karl Jobst. Like I said, his videos are excellent quality, but he blew up at me for sharing my opinion in the comments then deleted his comment. I had literally just said that something might be different than how he described, giving my two cents. Dude went off, saying how he was "glad we don't base the rules off your feelings" and the like. I only mention it now because he was included in the video, was portrayed as a great guy, and he commented himself. I didn't go looking for him. I just think it's fair to make people aware that he has a problem keeping his mouth shut if he has nothing nice to say. If he's better now, awesome. If not, it doesn't matter that it was a year ago. People should be aware when someone is acting poorly.

Nah mate, they're often overprotective of their stuff, Badabun would go as far as to Copyright Strike anyone in the Spanish side of KZbin who used even a single unedited second of their content, and when the Speedrunning community caught wind of this video, they decided to deactivate the comment section and the like/dislike bar, they're scummy af so they're pretty hated, as for the guy Tavo I would assume they just yeeted him under the bus, a man dragged down by a corporate YT channel, think of them like T-Series but being complete jerks who'd abuse the Copyright System, I dunno if Badabun is still active but I don't really care

@@YoBGS Yeah, the problem with them, in regard to other videos, is that they use bits of other youtubers for example with the typical top 10 but when someone uses a little bit of them, they go all crazy. And a lot of other videos are fake as well, they supposely caught couples cheating, but the couples are all actors as well, they found a stray dog and raised it, but later they found out that it was owned by one of them since birth. Heck, the worst thing they did was that they raised a charity to help a little girl to get surgery (I don't remember for what exactly) and they did it, but then they took all the money and never talked about the subject again. It's not a surprised they are the most hated spanish channel in the world, fortunately they are no longer on youtube and the staff fully apologized, but the owners disappeared and never got caught. From what I can tell and from what numerous comments have told me is that Badabun is a pretty disliked channel in the Latin sphere, and its not the first time they have done something like this for views and played it straight. Imo I think it was more about views and less about actually trying to make a legit run, as a regular passerby would see the video and never follow up on it. In the end, the only ones who know what their objective was is the video creator themselves.
@YoBGS
@YoBGS 3 жыл бұрын
That's what is so weird though. Even your most casual gamer knows that is NOT the Mario theme, and that's the first thing they hear. It's like they went out of their way to do that. Maybe it's for engagement? Like a million comments of "Why is the audio messed up?" Hard to say.

I think they were playing it straight, not as a meme. I don’t think his reactions come off as making a joke, but as someone showing of his skills. Honestly I think the reason for the choices made in this video are obvious: - Time was already explained; a run fast enough to be impressive, but not so fast to garner interest from more serious speedrunners (Though clearly it did) - The game is a classic, tons of people can relate to having played it, and how hard it would be to get that time for your average player - The clips they chose were using visually impressive strategies. They didn’t want a crazy fast run, but they did want to show that Tavo was able to make those pixel perfect jumps and adjustments. Basically this was a channel that wanted views, and chose to do so with something they didn’t know much about. I don’t think they though to research whether a move was physically possible with the controller they had or the animation cycles of coins because your average person wouldn’t think of that. They just wanted a quick way to make money with minimal effort.
@YoBGS
@YoBGS 3 жыл бұрын
But wouldn't the quick way to just be to jack someone else's run? Pitching audio, layering an upper third, editing several runs together, all of this takes time. People can relate to it sure, but they can also relate to that not sounding like Mario. You see it on FB all the time when a WR run pops up there, everyone wants to call it fake. And this channel took extra steps to ensure they got called out. It's just bizarre.
@efanwhiffen3930
@efanwhiffen3930 3 жыл бұрын
@@YoBGS I feel like a lot of the decisions make more sense if viewed as a failed attempt to fix issues with the continuity. For example, they start with the TAS for the game but decide that to make it less obvious and to slow down the run they spliced in clips from other runs. However now the audio sounds odd because they got the clips from people with different recording setups so they distort the audio to make it less noticeable. Then someone recognised that the number of coins and the times on the screen were inconsistent, so they made an overlay to hide it. And so on. Overall I think the reason that all this happened was because badabun probably had somebody else make the video and then got someone else to pretend to play it. This would likely explain the incompetence since although it looks like they were making it harder on themselves an amateur can often find a 10 step solution to a 2 step problem simply from inexperience and then just hand it to the people running badabun and they just go with it since it looks fine at a glance.
@guillermocortes4415
@guillermocortes4415 3 жыл бұрын
@@YoBGS You give them too much credit. There are tons of videos debunking pieces of Badabun's content (most in spanish mind you). From hired actors for pranks, to faking interviews by splicing footage. Badabun is not "one speedruner", it's a straight up corporation. The biggest theory is that nabbing a whole run would've ended in a set time and be recognizable, so they put a trainee who's most likely 18 years old and has never touched mario bros to edit it. It just needs to "look" legit.
@Pyromaniacalsquirrel
@Pyromaniacalsquirrel 3 жыл бұрын
@@YoBGS You also have to keep in mind the target audience. Badabun doesn’t generally make content for gamers. Their target audience aren’t generally going to be the people who will easily note weird pitching in the audio, or weird visual glitches. Most of their audience probably hasn’t played this game in years (if at all) and would chalk all the weird stuff to it being an old game. And for sure it would be easier to just steal someone else’s footage, but I think of it as if you’re gonna steal, why not steal all the different cool tricks? (And splice those together into a believable run?). Also, maybe trying to stay under KZbin’s radar in terms of copied content

It's so refreshing to hear this kind of perspective. In the community, you dont usually hear people trying to understand why people cheat as opposed to the fact they cheated. Time is the most limited resource we have on this planet, and when we don't feel like we're given a proper return for our investment, we tend to take shortcuts. I dont speedrun, so I dont really know, but as an observer in the community, it looks like there's nothing to be gained from not performing well on a run. I can at the very least understand why a majority of people cheat, even if I don't agree with it.
@YoBGS
@YoBGS 3 жыл бұрын
I just think if we can keep making speedrunning less of a solitary hobby, people may feel less inclined to cheat. When world records are the ONLY way to get recognized, of course people will do a lot for them. But there's so much speedrun adjacent content out there now that you don't even have to actively run to build a following. We need the stress of speedrunning to be more normalized, instead of just laughing at them for being "cringe" and moving on.

I have to say, at one point i was interested in the speedrunning community, and still are a bit (that is why i am here) but the first thing i found out after digging even a smidge deeper than the surface was an avalance of "cheaters exposed", "cheaters exposed but were protected by the community", "person tries to expose cheater but gets kicked out of community for daring to do that" and so on. The first picture a lot of people (including me) get about the speedrunner community is: Everyone cheats and no one really cares about. Speedrunning is basically the bike sports or bodybuilding of video games. Everyone uses doping and no one cares about it and You have almost no chance to get big if You don't do it at least a little bit. I guess that frightens a lot of people. I for example like to watch the occasional speedrun, but are not interested in the "top player" stuff, more the "casual" type of speedrun

I think maybe what he means by high-ability runners feeling entitled to a WR is that they know they can do it. They see their sum of best, they know what's possible, they know what's within their abilities as a runner, and the only thing in the way is that pesky RNG. At some point they have two choices: keep playing until they happen to get a perfect run, or just splice a perfect run. It's the same result either way, right? But one option is just less time consuming. I think that's the slippery slope these kinds of people maybe tend to fall down.

I've been interested in this topic myself for some time now and I came to the conclusion that the answer to your question consists of a combination of at least two of the four elements, which (if you don't mind) I'll now list and briefly describe: 1. Pressure - they are expected to succeed or fail and often in the absence of this success they are punished by their viewers or they feel as if they are being punished. In order to avoid this punishment, at least for a while, they either give up or cheat. In the eyes of such a person, losing is the only thing that awaits him - he is a loser already and nothing will change if he chooses to fight, so he will behave like one. 2. Entitlement - They expect a reward for what they do and believe that the work they put into achieving it is, if not enough, then even too much for the value of what they are fighting for. Because your life will always seem harder and more unfair than someone else's, often, when comparing their achievements with those of others, they may come to the conclusion that others have put less work into it than they do and thus they themselves have already cheat - if everyone cheats, no one does. 3. Reward - they need to have something in return for what they do, and it's not fun or satisfaction. Cheaters, unlike real players, do something only for the actual benefit and, as in this case, if the chance of benefit is greater than the risk of loss, in fact, even if he is caught red-handed, he will not lose much - he will only gain from it. 4. Stupidity - They do not think about the consequences of their actions or forget about them for the duration of their deception. In the case of fraud of any kind, stupidity manifests itself in two forms: Arrogance - you think that "you are him" so the rules do not apply to you, or Ignorance - you think that the rules are unnecessary and therefore there is no need to follow them.

I appreciate what you said around 3:55. I actually have a mental disorder that makes motivating myself very difficult. Just in general. It actually makes it difficult to get good at the things I have a talent for. Take art. I can see the image I want to create in my head, and if I took the time to practice, the talent I already have would make it possible to create what's in my head. The thing is, due to my lack of motivation to actually improve as opposed to having the end result, I never end up finishing. Not because I don't want to, but because I can't force myself to. I used to do similar things in single player games. I could see the path, so I'd give myself the goal as if I'd already walked it. This wasn't because I felt I deserved it. This was because the tools were there, and my compulsion to make things as easy as possible made those tools hard to resist. I feel like the people cheating tend to have a similar mentality. They don't feel that they deserve the record, but this is the "easiest" route since it takes the least amount of time. Btw, what causes this for me is aspergers. If I remember correctly, motivation issues are common for people with aspergers. ADHD is also very similar to autism, and I wouldn't be surprised seeing a correlation between this issue and the conditions. It might actually be worth a study to see how many of the people caught cheating are neurotypical versus autistic/ADHD.
@YoBGS
@YoBGS 3 жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense because I can see a ton of myself in what you're saying. Except with ADHD it's this compulsion to get one particular detail right while neglecting the rest of the project. So like if you build a house. My house wouldn't have a foundation but maaan that mirror I made for the bedroom would be the most intricate thing in the world, because I just got distracted. But like you said, giving yourself the goal isn't necessarily out of malice, it's to get yourself out of your own head. I appreciate the comment and hope you have a great day!

The most obvious reasoning to me about why this video exists is that 100% of the entire channel's content is outsourced to multiple people, mostly freelance teenagers fresh out of college, with no prior work experience, no communication between any of the branches that goes into making the video, so you end up with massive contradictions in the content they produce. They're a corporation that makes massive amounts of money off of other people's hard work. The actual people who worked on it don't even get minimum wage for their efforts. Forget why people cheat in speedruns, let's talk more about why corporations are allowed (and sometimes encouraged) to abuse the working class and treat them like expendable for the sake of company profits. If their content doesn't make sense in context, then it's safe to assume the company doesn't know anything about anybody other than their target audience, which makes the CEOs oblivious to the other people that might expose them for extortion.

another big BIG reason people cheat in speedruns is clout. they dont care about the community, they dont care how much work they or others put in, they just want the ability to brag that they have a world record run. i am sure there are some people who do i cause of stress or they feel like they need or deserve the record, but with badabun, they did for the sole purpose of attention. they want others to think "oh this guy is cool, lets watch his videos" and dont care who they are hurting to get the attention.

On the subject of "why do they feel the need to cheat?" All variations of the question are useless to ask. The only question that matters is "did they cheat?" If no, they're good, if yes, all officially recognized runs are revoked and they lose the ability to have legit runs recognized in the future. Personally, I'd go with a 3-strike rule where if a player has cheated on 3 or more runs, that's when they lose the ability to have runs officially recognized. That said, at no point does the question of "why" enter the equation, nor should it. I can appreciate playing devils advocate but cheating in speedruns is one of the few subjects in the world where the "why did they do it" question is almost entirely irrelevant as the answer will not change with that knowledge: a cheater still cheated regardless of the reasoning.

Badabun didnt need a viral video; their fanbase was *way* higher than any of the accounts from whom they stole footage. And considering other videos the badabun channel has uploaded. I do believe they did it with malice, as an effort to get more views and money without caring about the effects of what they're doing and completely oblivious to the fact that they're making a mockery of speedrunning. Badabun loves getting into drama, and they used to be super report-happy against anybody criticizing them in spanish (no idea if thats the case now, but it used to be) and copyright striking anybody using even 1 second of their footage and, from what I remember, threatening with defamation lawsuits. Like another comment mentioned, when the speedrunning community discovered the video instead of saying haha yes its a parody or whatever, they blocked the likes/disliked ratio and disabled comments on the video. Both you and Karl make good points about why speedrunners cheat, but.... this is the thing: Badabun isnt a speedrunning channel. Tavo isn't a speedrunner. They're just a channel trying to create stuff that people watch so they can get that sweet ad money, and they saw speedrunners, they probably saw events like GDQ where theres a lot of money flowing for charity, they said "Hey we want some of that money", chose a game that's immediately recognizable even from people who never played videogames and started picking the best footage they could find and mixed it. As for why faking the clock, very probably to keep all the insane feats that the original runs have without drawing attention for the short time. The speedrunning community is very welcoming towards people who want to do it. But nor Tavo nor Badabun intend to be speedrunners; they just want as much money as possible without the effort of having to learn the game and grind it for years until they get a good timer. Editing and splicing videos is easier, over all if most of your audience are kids who arent going to doubt what they're seeing, and that are going to go defend their 'idols' when they think they're being attacked, proven with the comments that the real runners have been getting complaining because they "stole" their footage from the thieves.

The reason for the "Pipe Artifact" appearing is a bug in the NES's PPU. If the game writes to PPU Control at a particular exact time, the scrolling for the next scanline will be 256 pixels to the left of where it should be, so it will show things that aren't part of the screen, such as that pipe. Then the next scanline is back to normal. Most emulators do not emulate this artifact, but watch any speedrun videos of affected games, and you'll see it happen all the time.

Here a Spanish speaker. I am going to tell all the story about Badabun and all about their company. (If somethign is misspelled i'm really sorry). Badabun is a Mexican Company that makes ''viral videos'' for KZbin (in the past was in a web page). The contracts to work at Badabun are AWFUL, they have al of your paswords, you can not use your own social media pages, literaly YOU are from their propriety, you can not say anything bad about em'. They always try to look like they are good persons and very moral. But they're not. For example, in the videos where the are ''''saving animal'', actually, all it's acted. Those animals were actually harmed for them. If you say something bad about em' in a video, they will copyright it, in that way, they can take it down and you probally are going to get a strike. The people from South America and Spain we hate em', we discovered all the thing bad that they did. The most of the people who worked there they leaved the company. It's not the firts time that they do this, they're people that nobody has to talk about em' any more, this channel got popularity because of the clikbait and those stuff. Everyone here in Sout America we forgot about they're channel to stop gaining views, clicks and the most important, money. this is a summarized thing about everything wrong they did. If you want to more about em', do it. but don't click in ANY of they're videos. From here (Argentina), i just want to say sorry for this people, if you actually got here, just want to say thanks!. -a Random Guy in the Internet for Another Guy in the Internet.

Belive me, as a latin american, i (and all latin americans here) know badabum very well, it is not a joke, they did tried to be serious with it, jusr like the fake videos of them resquing dogs, when there is proofs that they themselfs put those dogs in a bad position so they could make a video resquing them

Okay, for my answer on the "is it a meme or is it just plain deception" debacle depends on one thing: did they attempt to submit the speedrun to any leaderboards? If no, then I think it's a poorly-done parody. If yes, then I think it was meant to trick people.

This is the second video i watch from you, and i must say you are a super nice guy, but one thing i must say, you may not know the channel that made that fake speedrun, but they are trully a scummy company, they only do videos for views not caring about anything. But well languaje barrier, but don't worry, i understand that you wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, i don't blame you.

In the video's comment section someone pointed out that the timer only goes up to 0:00:30 rather than 00:00:60. That wasn't my find, I forgot who found out, but credit to that person. I would like to point out that they are semicolons and not colons Edit: Looking at it even further, it's completely wrong. That could be read as 5 hrs rather than 5 min. It should be 0:05:12.12, that would be the correct way of writing it.
@YoBGS
@YoBGS 3 жыл бұрын
The 30 instead of 60 strikes me as the timer being a frame counter instead of an actual timer then. So then it would be like the timer was capture from their video editing software but that doesn’t explain the semicolons. That’s a really interesting find

@@YoBGS It is. From my edit, it says that it's even written wrong too. That might just be me, but it should be written as 05:12.12 if we are going by that. Plus, if they are going by frame counter, does the speedrun community even accept that? I genuinely don't know. I thought they only accept things that count 60 frames, I could be wrong. I am not specialized in this.

@@YoBGS Yup, although as you say, it most likely isn't Tavo's work, the channel is hated precisely because of this kind of thing, basically it's very likely that it was indeed done by an intern that didn't care about what happened, just doing what was asked even though they don't know about speed running, they are a company that targets mainly children with fake, stupid, clickbaity and stolen content, just like all those food channels that tell you to dump strawberries in bleach and eat them, at the start they only ripped the whole thing off for their videos because too lazy, but people caught on so they started making weird edits to justify themselves, saying it's another video and not stolen, why is so badly done it's most likely because they only have to convince the children that it's real since they're are like over 70% of their watchtime. Their content is known for this.
