Can you call yourself a feminist if you don’t support the rights of transgender people? Amelia Abraham doesn’t think so. As someone who identifies as the ‘L’ in LGBT, Amelia has always felt empathetic towards the societal prejudice trans people face, but, on speaking with her friends, she was shocked to discover how many of them struggle to reconcile their feminism with transgender rights. Amelia addresses the common concerns listed by some about trans people - principally the risk to women’s safety. She demonstrates why conflating sexual violence with transgender rights denies the reality of rape culture and its actual perpetrators, whilst also unjustly demonising the trans community and increasing the prejudice, discrimination and hostility towards trans people. A couple of years ago, a 60yo family man named Sergio change his gender to woman, and his name to SergiA...he then retired with full benefits from his job. Nope, they're really not. Even in the most liberal pro-trans countries, there are exceptions to protect for example women refuge centres, and most of the work isn't as trans-inclusive as that. Any boundaries should come from scientific merit, not just some random sample of peoples opinion on what they like or don't.

If you watch teens talk about this stuff, your mind will explode. They have so many rules that contradict one another but the basic premise is that having a gender outside your birth gender gives you rights that no one else has! If you purposefully present as androgynous, a term they seem to not use anymore so they can very specifically define both genders, no genders, or neutral genders, you still have a right to get mad at a person who doesn’t know your pronoun or has questions about what they are doing! It’s crazy! Then, besides being transphobic if you don’t want to date, yes date, a trans person, they also manage to get pissed off at “trans chasers.” The whole thing is absurd. I think trans people exist. They are still less than 1% of the population. They are typically not the problem either as they have sacrificed for their transitions and it isn’t a game to them or something to promote to get KZbin views. It’s not some creative expression. Those people though are not getting violent with feminists to dominate their spaces. Why? Because that is not a particularly female thing to do.
