I'm a first year GenX and I told a co-worker 10 years younger, who was a child mostly in the 80s, how it was when I was a kid and she couldn't believe it. My mom would drop me off at the movie theater on a Saturday afternoon and ask when to come back. Inside were nothing but other kids, no adults anywhere in sight. I think everything started to change in the 80s. One of the biggest factors I think, was the kidnapping and death of Adam Walsh. Things like that happened before but they would hit the news and be gone and they were so few and far between that we'd never think of it again. Adam's father, John, went on to make a huge deal out of it and had that hit show, "America's Most Wanted" for years. At the same time the news media was changing and started to pay more attention, often too much, to scandals and sensationalism. The media had no problem making the public fear things that were rare and made them think they were commonplace.

So glad as Gen X we were able to experience freedom as kids. I could NOT imagine the difference if we had an electronic leash and pictures/videos of every stupid thing we did. Great conversation.

As an early Millenial who grew up in the 80s/90s, I'm so thankful to have a similar time growing up as my slightly older Gen X counterparts. Trying to let my kids grow up this same way.

I raised my Gen Z sons like they were living my Gen X childhood, mostly. They would spend all day outside on their bikes, and later, dirt bikes. I made them wear bike helmets, only when they were in town. On the farm, I didn't. On dirt bikes they had to wear helmets, but I did to, when I was young. Now they are independent young men and are not afraid to voice their opinions.

It is wrong that our (GenX) parents "Didn't Care", Our parents expected us to not be stupid, as to get in trouble.

gen X is such a joke…they are so narcissistic (Dana is such a Karen) wait ten years and they’ll be worse than all the boomers combined
