Why Germans LOVE No Speed Limits! Autobahn Explained

It's not unusual to be driving 100 mph on the German Autobahn and be left in the dust by a family saloon doing 150. Germany is the best place in the world to legally drive as fast as you can.
Germany's roads are also relatively safe, but would an Autobahn speed restriction make them even safer - or more dangerous? And why is Germany the only developed country in the world without a general speed limit?
REV reporter and self-confessed speed freak Kai Steinecke heads onto the highway to see for himself with the flashiest car he could find: A Jaguar F Type R with 550 horsepower and a top speed of 186 mph.
P.S.: for comparison, roughly speaking:
80 kmh = 50 mph
100 kmh = 62 mph
130 kmh = 80 mph
160 kmh = 100 mph
200 kmh = 124 mph
240 kmh = 150 mph
300 kmh = 187 mph

Not trying to diss my home country or generalize but maybe it's because people actually know how to drive over there and dont act like mindless drones that text on their phones about how a picture of a dog is cute while clickity clacking with their long a$$ finger nails or how pick up truck drivers think and believe that they own the road because they have a v8. It's not about the speed limits, it's about the driver. Some drivers are better than others, simple as that! I'm from the UK and I believe that the speed limit here should be increased, maybe 80/90 mph. The current limit of 70mph is too slow and outdated. No one stick to 70mph, 80% of motorists drive faster than the limit.

People drive at a young age because you need a car to get around and get to school in some cases. When I got my license at 16 I thought it was cool but my parents just used me to go get food groceries all the time. And I guarantee Americans spend more time in a car than any other country.

Seriously 150kmh (93 mph) top speed?!?! I have a family car, the nissan rogue, that tops out at 120 mph (193 kmh) And even though 100 mph (160 kmh) was my highest speed I drove. Studies have shown that it is not the speed that causes accidents, it’s the variations in speed. If everyone is cruising at 200km per hour they will all have the same following distance. The prob is when u go say 100km/hr and then another at 120km/hr and another at 80km/hr. This causes ppl to break and swerve around. Germany got it right here.

But not right enough. Germany's motorway death rate is significantly higher than Britain's, and has been for decades - in spite of the fact that the vast majority of British drivers have no motorway training whatsoever (it was only made compulsory for new drivers in 2018). So either German drivers aren't as good as they think they are, or there is something much more dangerous about German motorways. One thing in particular springs to mind, but it couldn't possibly be that - could it?

The EU, the OECD, and Germany's own Road Safety Council all publish their figures in fatalities per billion kilometres driven - a metric which renders the size and length of different networks irrelevant. I don't know where you got that information from, but you may be thinking of the often quoted statistic for 2014, which claimed that the Autobahn carried 31% of the nation's traffic and accounted for 11% of her road fatalities. However, in the same year those figures for the UK were 21 per cent and 5.4 per cent respectively. In other words, the Autobahn carried 48 per cent more of the country's traffic than the United Kingdom, but was responsible for _104 per cent_ more of her road deaths. It's a typical piece of specious lobby talk which looks impressive in isolation, but is anything but when viewed in context.

They didn't only do that. They steadily improved their driver training courses throughout the years. Now Germany's drivers are some of the best-trained in the world. The entire practical course takes about 100 hours to complete, and includes a variety of driving conditions, including driving on the Autobahn, in the dark, in the countryside and in urban areas. These are all minimum requirements for the test, by the way. Speed always comes at a price; you can either choose death, or a hilariously difficult driver training course.

Quite honestly, after driving on Autobahn for a good 8 years, I have the feeling that there should not be an speed limit. Though there is no much of time difference (despite burning more fuel), it is the emotional connect with the car and the sense of "Gloves off baby" engages the driver. Unlike in the US where you have long straight lines (mostly boring), German Autobahns have engaging roads. If it is just getting from Point A to B, I would rather prefer public transport !!! Just saying. :-)

And they're immensely safer than in countries further away, even European ones with high standards of living. It's undeniable: there is no real problem with no speed limits on the Autobahns. It's just that some people are sadists, political extremists and are not happy until they control every aspect of other people, destroy the smallest joys, conveniences of others. So tell me: if Germany has the best roads, the best cars, and the best drivers, then how come they can't match the motorway safety record of a country like the United Kingdom? Kilometer per kilometer, nearly twice as many people die every year on the Autobahn as on British motorways - and the vast majority of UK drivers have no motorway training at all, because learners were banned from using them until 2018, and post-test tuition has never been compulsory! So either German drivers aren't as good as they think they are, or something makes the Autobahn relatively dangerous, to the extent that not even the "world's best drivers" can cope with it. There's only one thing that makes German motorways radically different, so "no real problem with no speed limits" sounds a bit like wishful thinking to me - and not even your own Road Traffic Safety Council agrees with you.

Going 200? LoL thats super regular speed out there. Lived in Germany for 6 years driving 260-280 daily...didnt see any major accident. Just..the german drivers are skilled enough. They know their cars, their roads, their behaviour and they have big discipline. Unrestricted speeding on the highway is a form of escapism to many of us, even in countries where road conditions are not up to the Autobahn's standards. It's a way to break free from the constraints of having to conform with traffic rules, but of course we have to be prepared with its consequences as well when we get too excited. It's perhaps the closest thing to getting adrenaline rush from roller coaster rides for ppl who can't afford to spend money on a pricey ticket to visit a theme park.

You have to see the general picture here: The Autobahn in general is a very safe place compared to normal roads. The oncoming traffic is separated by a barrier, no slow participants in traffic such as pedestrians and bikes etc. Germany has a very dense network of Autobahns. If you limited the speed, people would take more direct and shorter routes instead of longer ways via Autobahn. That might actually lead to more lethal crashes on country roads. There was a serious thought about setting the max car weight for speed limitless driving from 3,5 t down to 2,7 t to stop vans from racing after there had been a few serious accidents. But limiting them in speed on the Autobahn would just push them off there onto normal roads and shorter routes. That's why that plan was abandoned.

Here in the US, we have drivers with focus on par with a soggy towel and can barely handle 60mph without smashing into everyone around them. I'm almost certain that more than half don't have a license, and the process of getting one is too leniant overall. An Autobahn would never work here, sadly.

Crashing at 120 km/h means you potentially wake up in a hospital, suffering in pain and agony. Crashing at 220 km/h means your instantly die without feeling anything, it also saves on cremation costs as your remains have been liquefied by the impact.

Just so you know, the main reason why you cannot directly compare those death statistics is because those are absolute numbers. You need to compare the deaths per month PER NUMBER OF PEOPLE USING THE HIGHWAY, i.e. per million of users. That's more like it. You can't just take numbers like that, that's not how you compare a statistic. Denmark has only 0.8 deaths per month and italy 3.9, so Denmark is better, right? NO. Just as a rough estimation, we can assume that in both countries the percentage of highway users is the same, hence it will be proportional to the total population, in first approximation. So, Denmark has 6 million inhabitants, italy has 60 millions. So, if denmark had 10 times higher population (same as italy), the number of deaths would be 8 per months, while italy would have half, 3.9. So, Italy is better, taking the ratios. As you said, of course the number of deaths depends on a lot of other factors, but I wrote this comment just to remind you that numbers have a meaning and a power, and you just cannot use them simply displaying them without an appropriate contextualisation

The most important is Road Traffic Regulations (Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung, StVO Section 1 Basic rule (1) Use of the road requires constant care and mutual respect (2) A person using the road shall act in such a way as not to harm or endanger or, more than is unavoidable in the circumstances, to hinder or inconvenience any other person YOU can go to jail for over 1 year for disregardig this golden rule remember 2003 fatal accident of a Mercedes engeneer without touching - just passing 1.5 years sentence

4:43 this is a really bad comparison metric. US has ~330 million people to Germany's ~83 million people. USA is 12.4 deaths to road accidents / 100,00 people and Germany is 3.7. Also curious where you got your numbers given that the US has some 3,000 people die monthly on average due to traffic accidents. These are pretty brazen errors, figured DW would be better.

Thanks for checking up too! Clearly it depends on how the statistics are presented. Our quoted figures are taken from the International Transport Forum, which is part of the OECD and is pretty reliable. For clarity it should read monthly deaths on motorways alone per 100,000 people, that's close to the figures you quote.

Can't really compare those two. The Autobahn is a very safe place. In 2018, only 400 of Germany's ~3200 road fatalities happened on the Autobahn. Compare that to almost 14.000 firearm homicide deaths in the US in the same year...I think you get the idea. The most useful thing about regulating the speed is that it saves a ton of CO2 emmissions, but that's about it.

Dont metion USA deaths on highway. We just have bad drivers. I guy could literally make a mistake whilst driving, (no wreck just the mere fact of cutting someone off without a signal),then the cutoff person will get road rage, pull out a gun and the other person will chase after them and call the cops. And last I checked bullets travel faster than a cop car. They'll continue thier shared road rage of cat and mouse across the city all while running reds and driving on the interstate shoulders and other reckless behavior. Also we'd rather slam on brakes to make a turn with no signals, and if the signal lights are used its after they already turned the steering wheel. People also drive slowest in the fast lane. They also dont get in the slow lane after they've finished their pass. Tailgating, using their brakes when they are the lead car instead of just taking their foot off the gas. Not checking their blind spot before changing lanes (again not using the turn signal) American Drivers suck.

German unlimited highways are far safer than most other European countries' roads even though they have low limits. That's enough about that subject. Education should be the solution to this as it is an intelligent solution for all other issues. And for all the East-German-minded, jealous, cowardly people who can't handle driving fast: you don't have to drive fast. No-one is forcing you to drive fast. No-one is even forcing you to get on the Autobahn at all! You can live your whole life without ever going on the Autobahn, just take public transportation. But yeah, we all know that it's not about you, it's about you evil, slimy, jealous, hateful people wanting to hurt OTHERS, you want to punish them and FORCE them to give up what they benefit from and enjoy. Because you are pure evil. But speed limits WILL be implemented soon. Why? Because German politicians and civil servants are TOTALLY corrupt, and VW Group has gone all-in with EVs after they ruined their diesel-strategy by getting caught in their massive diesel cheating. So now that VW has gone all-in on EVs they want speed limits on the roads, because without speed limits the EV inferiority in high speeds is very pronounced. The public will always know that EVs are inferior in high speeds when there are no speed limits, and VW can't stand such a situation as a hindrance to any of their sales. And yes, the German government IS absolutely and totally corrupt, just look at yet another example: they came out with MASSIVE subsidies for EVs EXACTLY perfectly timed for VW's first proper EV sales start. EXACTLY when the VW ID.3 came on sale is when the German MASSIVE over 9000€ subsidies were introduced.
