Still not legal in Australia, my partner and I have been together for 28 years and we consider ourselves married but it would be nice to be able to do it legally. Still, it's pretty great that others can get married if they want to, so go you!🌈🌈

I never minded the term girlfriend when my partner and I first started dating but now 7 years in it doesn't seem like the right word. We use partner as we legally can't get married in Australia yet. I agree that girlfriend gets confused a lot with just a girl that's a friend!

In Germany marriage equality has just been legalised and there is a lot of discussion about the need of marriage in general. The question of 'Why would you want to get married, as it is the most heteronormative and conservative idea?' comes up sometimes. To me that is just frustrating, because that should be for anyone to decide individually, whether you're gay, straight or whatever. I am so happy that I now have the legal ability to make that decision at some point in my life. If a straight person was to ask me that question, I'd feel somehow invalidated. Just because I'm gay, it doesn't mean that I have to do everything differently to my straight friends and family.

There is this documentary called bridegroom which is about a gay couple where one of them died and their parents didn't keep his boyfriend informed and actually barred him from going to the funeral because next of kin rights gave the power to his parents and not his boyfriend whereas if they where married (which they where planning too when it was legal) then he would have been the next of kin. It's really sad but it shows the importance of marriage equality. I also really don't like the term partner I personally prefer significant other for a gender neutral term for the person you are dating as it shows how significant that person is.
@nicoleduckery40677 жыл бұрын
That's exactly why gay marriage being legal is so important to me. I'm single at the moment. But, if I had a significant other, I wouldn't want her left out of any decisions concerning my welfare...EVER.

I am a bisexual in a "heteronormative" engagement. If I were engaged to a woman I feel like things would be dramatically different. Things are definitely easier since i am betrothed to a man as i am a woman. People just assume i am a heterosexual because of this. Sad fact but sometimes in these situations you have to play along not so much to be accepted but to be treated as a human.

I remember when we got marriage equality in Germany,my mom,her bf at the time and my brother were on our way to buy groceries. The song that was playing was interrupted by a really happy moderator, squealing about how it's finally legalised. My brother and I screamed and gave high fives to our mom. The next day in school everyone was so happy and everyone talked about it. The whole class talked about how it's time, about sexuality and the history of homosexuality. It was like Christmas but better.

It's absolutely hard to fathom that there are still many countries that have not legalised homosexuality and also that many people are still killed JUST FOR BEING GAY. I was reminded of this last week when I met a lesbian from Cameroon who had to flee her country as her friends had been murdered and she would have been too had she not escaped. You and Claudia are just the sweetest! As someone who has a chronic illness and feels like I will never find someone who will "put up with me" it's really inspiring to see such a nice unconditional love between you two. I would love a video where you speak about your engagement story :) Also, why you decided to be married after such a "short" time. I'm just curious haha.

As Claud said (at 9:00) , familiarity helps change peoples perspective or thoughts about gay people . It feels more natural and fine. You two really help that issue, it's just helpful to see two smart, fun, loving, responsible people who happen to be gay. I've noticed that if society sees a shift in "acceptance" , more people feel able to be alright with the change. No one wants to be the first if it's not their issue. But, as society grows, the naysayers can re think their ideas, feelings and then Not feel so vulnerable about their new belief. YAY

In 2017, I was closeted in an extremely unaccepting environment with disabilities that were constantly belittled and ignored. Now I'm married and have medical professionals that are actually listening to me. Your videos have been a constant in my life through it all and I'm so grateful that I had you as a role model where I could see a positive future for myself even though I was gay and disabled. You have helped me through very tough times and I am so grateful for the work you do.

Thanks for the sweet video. I absolutely adore the two of you and love your discussions/stories. I lost my life partner to cancer before it became legal to marry in the United States. We would have loved to have gotten married and been each other’s wife. Every time I’ve had to fill out some form that asks what my marital status is, I feel robbed of the opportunity to have been married. I should be checking off the box that says Widow, but instead, I have to check the box that says Single. What a heartbreaking reminder that prejudice against lesbians/gays denied me the right to marry the woman that I love. In my heart, D’Nell will always be my wife, but having our relationship legally recognized would have been life changing and solidifying in so many ways.

Two things I want to say about marriage and the bible: 1) the passage about man taking woman is a bad translation. It is more accurately translated as "takes a partner like onto himself" genderless. And 2) the bible describes marriage as two bodies becoming one flesh, which seems pretty dog on accurate. And again no gender specified. Kinda cool.

We just recently had a very expensive plebiscite to vote on whether gay couples should have the right to marry. Don't you love that? When people get to have an "opinion" on equal rights and the government actually takes the prejudiced opinions into consideration because they don't want to loose votes....what is this world we live in!? But, luckily, last week 61.6% of Australians voted YES to same-sex marriage and hopefully our government will actually do the right thing. Finally. At least the people of Australia have a conscience even if our government is poorly representing us. 👩❤️💋👩 🌈 👨❤️💋👨

The great thing about marriage is when you fall out of love (and that happens more often than people are willing to admit), you try to work through it rather than just walking away. I think that's the biggest difference between being married and being in a relationship.

Yet another lesbian Australian here, I'm only 20 years old I've been out for 5 years and I have this mental block against marriage simply because it's never been legally an option to me? I never saw anything like it growing up, in media or in person. The same way I can't imagine being an old woman in a rocking chair on the verandah holding the hand of my beloved. It's never been shown to me and I find that quite troublesome, like there's this implication that, that kind of life isn't for me. Does anyone else ever feel this way?

I've personally never seen the point of marriage. I just don't feel the need to "validate" my relationship by signing a bunch of legal documents and having a big party. That goes for whatever the sexuality and gender. But I support anyone who chooses that for themselves. I just wish long term commited partners could get the same legal rights without all the cost and rigmarole of "getting married" (and divorcing if it unfortunately goes wrong a few years down the line) If there were a way of simply registering and deregistering your relationship once you've been together for so long, I'd probably go for it... people would say it would make marriage less significant, but I don't think so if marriage were still an option.
@nikk-named6 жыл бұрын
Well there surely are ways to get married without throwing a party. Like you can just walk into the law thingy and get married and that's it. You don't need to have a party... I think. I dunno if that would be an answer to your question? :)
@zhenia25112 жыл бұрын
I know that replying to a comment after 4 years is weird, but, maybe, you will see this comment. In my country there are 3 types of marriage: factual, civil and religious. Religious marriage is registered in both church and state organisations. Civil is registered only in state organisations and factual marriage is when you live 5+ years together and share some property. It functions just like civil marriage legally if there are witnesses to prove that partnership. So the legal concept you're talking about exists in very few countries. My parents are in factual marriage, cuz they never wanted to waste money on wedding. My mum isn't a fan of that stuff.

Me and my girlfriend have been together for four years now but aren't at a point in our lives where we want to get married (although we do want to in a few years!) and 'girlfriend' doesn't quite carry the weight / is often seen as the 'straight girlfriends' kinda thing but partner just has the wrong connotations for me. I think one of the saddest things about gay relationship inequality is when I hear about couples who have been together for decades and one dies and because of them not being married, having equal rights and a will the deceased family just comes and takes everything and inherits everything. Marriage is so much more important for gay people (and other minorities tbh). A straight, white, unmarried couple doesn’t have to worry about being denied access to their SO if they are hospitalized, the ability to make medical decisions for an incapacitated partner, etc. Gay couples have to constantly worry they’ll end up at a hospital run by a homophobe. People don’t need marriage for the happy times- they need it for when everything goes to shit.

Ugh, I do not miss when I would call my wife my girlfriend and everyone assumed we were straight. Or when I said my girlfriend and people said “your boyfriend?” like I was just confused. It is really interesting to me to hear about other’s reactions to the legalization of gay marriage because it is very normalized where I live, by the time my wife and I got married in January of this year gay marriage had been legalized for almost 12 years.

In the U.S. marriage was such an important issue for a lot of people because of access to health care. Healthcare is entirely privatized in the U.S. (you’ve probably heard) and insurance is most often provided through employers. Usually it’s offered to the employee’s family as well (at a cost. But generally, a manageable cost.) So having a spouse whose job offers health insurance makes it possible for a person to make choices, like working part-time (no insurance), staying home with children (no insurance), self-employment or entrepreneurship (no insurance) etc., while still being able to have babies, or you know, stay alive. I don’t know if people outside the U.S really get how critically, critically important this is. It can literally be life and death.

An important activist thing on marriage is that AIDS lead to a lot of gay marriage advocacy because marriage allows you the legal protection to visit your partner in the hospital. A lot of people weren't able to spend the last days or plan the funerals of partners who died of of HIV/AIDS because of homophobic families. Marriage equality activist was launched around then! I find it a bit weird when people act like it's a waste of activist effort.

No-one ever notices us on the island, I had to rewind the video just to double check I'd heard you correctly. Gay marriage is now legal on the isle of man :)

Oddly enough, I have had people refer to my husband as my "partner" (not people in the US, but it's happened)... It does feel really odd. I've never liked "partner" really, because it feels like it takes all the romance out of a situation. Though, I do agree that there needs to be a better word for "girlfriend" because it does sound like "girl friend" and downplays the relationship... And "lover" implies it's a physical relationship. Labels are obnoxiously tricky! People thought Dan and I were "too young" to get married, because they were like "you only get married to have kids" ... Um, no. Plus, if we were, it was really none of their business! I love being married. That "this person is here forever and truly cares about me, flaws and all" feeling is amazing! Plus, it's definitely a validation of sorts, even for heteronormative relationships. When Dan and I were quite serious, but not uet engaged/married, he'd get invited to stuff alone and he always thought it was weird to have to ask if I could come (and the few times he was told something like "I only invited you" were pretty appalling). Now that we're married, it's much more of a "packaged deal" thing, so people have to confront their own exclusionary ways and be purposefully exclusionary to leave me out. I imagine the validation is significantly stronger in homosexual (or other) relationships... Which, I agree it shouldn't be, but I'm glad there is a way to get the wider acceptance started. Do you know if being a homosexual was ever fully illegal here (USA)? I know we have all sorts of laws that discriminate against non-cishetero people, but I'm not sure if we ever had a "you're gay so you're in jail now" law. I quite enjoyed this video! It wasn't quite what I expected - I think I was more expecting something similar to the "month favorites" videos - but it was thought provoking and a great way to start my day!

Hi Elizabeth! Thank you for your insightful comment. I really love the idea of the 'package deal' ha ha It is very validating to be able to call Claudia my wife, as I feel people tend to take our relationship more serious. I did some quick research, and well... "Prior to the 2003 Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, same-sex sexual activity was illegal in fourteen US states, Puerto Rico, and the US military." 😱

Jessica Kellgren-Fozard I did know about the "don't ask, don't tell" law for the military, but had no idea it was actually illegal if someone found out! Sadly, the Texas thing isn't surprising, but I'm sad that it was so many locations and wasn't changed until so recently! I have been noticing more and more that we tend to be a bit late on the social progress stuff, sadly... Hopefully that'll start changing soon!

I met my fiancé the year that same sex marriage was legalized in the US- 2015. I can't wait to get married, but I know it will have to be a while from now because her family is Indo-Fijian and, unfortunately, are not supportive. My fiancé is not out to her family and is scared of their reaction. I wish that didn't hold her back, but I can't force it. Btw I love your vlogs!!

In Switzerland we don't have "gay marriage". We have a civil partnership. So I'm not married to my wife, but we are "bound by a registered partnership". I generally say that she is my wife, and I think that being able to call her so has made things easier towards the outside world. But on paper, it could be more difficult to get a job. We also don't have exactly the same rights as heterosexual couples, and we can't adopt. Laws are SLOWLY changing, and we are looking forward to it

Well 2014 was a good year. Unfortunately heard in Australia it only came legal for gay ppl to get married. And I can't believe it took that long

I live, was raised and born in Peru and sadly no gay marriage for us. I understand it will take a lot because Latin America is so damn conservative and sexist. I do wish to spend my life here, I love my country (just hate the politicians). However I also wish to marry a woman and live happily ever after (I make up a different love story every week, hopeless romantic here). But I do think I'd be okay without a certificate. And yes, I also have a pretty open mind but live in a country where that's not common. I recently confirmed my mom would not accept me as a lesbian and my dad probably would (though it would still be tough, of course)

About the girlfriend partner thing this has always annoyed me in the English language cause in Danish we have the word *kæreste* and it's gender neutral and just means *dearest* or *my love*

You know, tbh I just don't understand why it was wrong to begin with, when way back in like the renaissance era and viking era, and with brothels and stuff, they had tons of like gays, lesbians and bisexuals. To me and in my heart, you should be able to be with whomever you love no matter what their sex or prefrence is. Love to all...😘 from my husband and me.
