All the most successful electric guitar designs of today were introduced between 1950 and 1965. Everything else, including PRS, are based on designs from that era.

I think Gibson and Fender are always recalled as the kings of Guitar because no matter what different builders make they always compare it to though in body shape, those kind of things however, I’m a boutique guitar lover, i’d rather give my money to a smaller shop, even though some of those prices are high, but I get to get a relationship with the builder I know where my moneys going , and it’s not as cookie-cutter fender or Gibson

It's because Fender and Gibson are "Iconic" brands that stood the test of time, plus all the famous legendary guitarists ALL played those two brands.🎸 Also Jonathan has a point, If you're playing roots music like blues, you'll go back to those 2 brands because they just feel right. it's a very awkward feeling to play other brands, I myself have lots of guitars...(Ibanez, Suhr, ESP, BC Rich, PRS, Harley Benton, Schecter)...they all play great and some are even waaay slickier and playable. But I always grab the Fender Strat and the Gibson LesPaul whenever I want to play something meaningful or nostalgic. It always feel right with those two, there's some kind of unexplainable feeling or power when you play them.🔥

They didn’t in the early 1980’s. Watch an old episode of British 1980’s live music show The Tube. You see guitarists in most bands Schecters, Yamaha SG’s, Ibanez Roadstars & Blazers galore. The only Fenders & Gibson’s you see on stage are mainly vintage ones. Although early Squier JV guitars seemed very popular with many touring pro’s too. UK session ace Alan Murphy used a heavily modded JV Squier as his main instrument along with Aria Pro II RS Elites. I think the big two really owe this success to PRS & the Japanese for shaking things up.

I grew up on Ibanez and Epiphone guitars in the late 80s/ early 90s, usually from pawn shops. They were what I could afford. Along with a Peavy Bandit 65. Fender and Gibson held/ hold that mystique and are a high bar to reach for. They are iconic. I have and have had a few Fenders and Gibsons in the last few years, and they are good guitars that do the thing. I also have a few off-brand/ boutique guitars that i enjoy playing. Tools in the tool box. Some high end, some akin to Hobo Freight.

It's weird. A year ago, it seemed like everybody was commenting on Gibson not being present at all in the big concerts as everyone was reopening from the pandemic.I know I saw a lot of epiphone SGs at the local shows in Houston, a lot of offset Fenders and a whole lot of Schecter in the hands of the metal guys. It's been more of a comeback of Gibsons outside of the Dave Grohl and Taylor Swift who've kept on using them for long time. Speaking of Taylors, I been seeing more Taylor guitars out in the wild lately than ever before.

All the bands I listen to are using Ibanez and PRS lol but overall sure, Fender and Gibson definitely dominate. I’m personally not a huge fan of either. I use Fender for certain tones but my main players are PRS, Ibanez and Charvel. I just think they’re better, and yes I know Charvel is owned by Fender hahaha. Gibson I’ve just never picked one up and thought “wow, this is it.” I’ve never really enjoyed playing them. And Joe Walsh just got his own signature PRS a bit ago.😊

Hi guys, great subject. I can appreciate other brands. I know that Gibson and Fender aren't the only ones who make good guitars, and most people can name brands that make "better" guitars. I think that PRS is the only "big" brand that offers something sincerely different, for better or worse. Boutique brands sometimes offer something that really veers from the formula, but even then, it's usually some evolution or refinement of what Fender and Gibson already did. I can't speak for anyone else, but the guitars that make my musical world go around are my Tele, and my SG. These are the guitars that make me and keep me excited to play, and these are the voices that I want to hear when I'm playing. I've had those two for 19 and 20 years respectively and they just don't get old. I don't get tired of them. Is that me wanting to be like my heroes? I haven't actually thought about that too deeply but it's possible. In my own head, do reference other players when dialing in a sound on my gear so... yeah maybe. Cheers guys!

I always think of resale when buying a guitar. I know that when I look at used listings, I notice Fender and Gibson - and subsidiary brands Squier and Epiphone - first. Other brands, like Ibanez, seem to sit longer and sell cheaper used. There's a topic for you: buying with an eye to eventually reselling. I'm an older player and know it's inevitable that either I, or a family member, will be selling off my retirement hobby

I love PRS, but I think they're the ultimate definition of "Jack of all trades, master of none". They can't do the Strat neck tone/in between tones, the Tele bridge tone, and they don't have the ballsy humbucker sound of a Les Paul. There's a reason why Paul literally made the scale and neck radius right in between a Gibson and a Fender. They're sort of that one guitar that tries to emulate a little bit of everything but doesn't quite get there (but close). I guess the best way to put it is that if you're at home recording, you're of course going to grab that Gibson or Fender style of guitar to get that specific tone. But if you're going out to a gig and your catalog has a mix of everything from metal to country to jazz, and you don't want to bring more than one guitar, then PRS is up your alley.

Interesting video subject! As an older player, here’s kind of what I’ve observed/experienced in the past 4 decades. The electric guitar didn’t really “take off” until the 60s. So it was a relatively “new” thing at the time. This era produced a “crop” of guitarists that ended up being both genre-defining and instrument defining. It could possibly be argued that Jimmy Page “saved” the Les Paul only for it to get “re-saved” by Slash and Zakk Wylde later on. If you look back at the 80s and 90s, Yngwie saved the Strat (go ahead and have a fit over me saying this). Just a reality. Musicians idolize players; this creates artist-driven affinities. For example, do I feel “inspired” to play blues on my ESP Horizon? No, never. I typically grab a Strat for that (though, more and more I find myself going for my Silver Sky). If I’m playing classic rock, I go Les Paul (again, more and more to the PRS McCarty 594). In spite of my roots being Strats and Les Pauls, I’m really becoming mostly a PRS guy. They are more expensive for sure, but They are definitely a better instrument and since I can afford them, there you have it.
@JohnPMusic
@JohnPMusic Жыл бұрын
This is spot on. I’m a generation behind you having first picked up the guitar in ‘78. But by ‘84 things changed dramatically. You couldn’t give away 70’s Strats and players got bored with a Les Paul’s 3 sounds which only two were used. Everything changed after EVH and the bar was raised. Eruption and that tone was the gold standard. You couldn’t get that with stock Strats or a Gibson’s. So all the “shred” companies came out-Kramer, Jackson, Charvel, Ibanez, etc. Fast forward 40 years, and the weird reality is that players are better than ever and they’re all over the place thanks to sm. But a lot of it is still based off of blues/blues-rock styles. But they’re simplifying their needs. They can do what they want on Fenders and Gibson. And they can play. Fenders and Gibson’s are low-maintenance, affordable for the most part, and nail the blues stuff. Plus Ibanez and PRS still carry too much of a negative stigma to a lot of people or are pigeonholed.

My son listens to some heavier stuff and Gibsons shine. But it’s true those two dominate the stage generally. I think newer artists play different ones. I had the opportunity to play a Gibson Les Paul for a week and it was so much lighter because of the weight relief, which i don't really like. Seemed out of balance. If i could afford a top quality Gibson without the weight relief I'd definitely get it to add to my (currently small) collection because i love Les Paul's but I don't really have complaints about my Tokai. Fender and Gibson nailed it with the Strat and the LP. There is a box where within one are to create a guitar that will appeal to the masses. Scramble away in that box but it will always cross Gibson and Fender and the outcome will in most cases bee quite not as appealing. There are a few makers making some good progress still built on LP and Strat but enough of its own and as pleasing to the eye, they may make a shift but as I see their marketing is still a way to lame. One is realy to slap people in their face in getting thru. One other factor is all these copyes that are flooding the markets, those takes the eyes for the new genuine stuff.

Gibson is the counterbalance, more money but Epiphone gets you close to Gibson. All sorts of music genres as people know them today where established from the 1940s to the early 90s (I'm including the 80s/early-90s basically for the post punk / indie / grunge side of music). Back then PRS basically did not exist. D'Angelico's, Gretsches & even Ibanezes did (think of the Ibanez GB10 launched as early as 1977) but with a more limited scope of application. So new musicians obviously want to reproduce the sound of the classic recordings they're listening to all the time. All they want is a good Strat, a good Tele, a 335, a 175, an LP, an SG, a 6120, a Jazzmaster etc. PRS, as good as they might be, are irrelevant, sound too generic and are VERY expensive (you can buy a descent Strat plus a descent Paul for the same money as a single Core Custom 24!) But most importantly there are no milestone recordings on PRS guitars that anyone wants to mimick. The same thing has happened to other newer guitar brands, like e.g. Hamer (remember them?) The difference with PRS is that P.R.S. (the person) is really a hard worker, throws into the mix some serious QC processes and sells that through intensive marketing. But from the looks of things (judging from what's going on in music production over the past 30 years) it's going to be Fender & Gibson forever... (not that I'm complaining).

When I decided to be a Beatle (early 60s, I was 7) it was Gretsch, Rickenbacker & Hofner (natch). By the end of the 60s it was Les Pauls & Strats . . . with a few Teles, SGs, 335s etc. thrown into the mix . . . and that was the 70s, essentially. Gibson & Fender have had their ups and downs over the years (still a bit hit and miss . . . ya gotta play the thing in the shop before you open your wallet!) but let's face it - Coke and Pepsi . . . they are establishment. Happy with my 1968 LP Custom and a nice Japanese 'Roland' Strat from 1981 but I'm sort of agnostic about my guitar brands these days - Gretsch, Duesenberg, Sadowsky, Eastman . . . TBH the few Gibsons I've played recently, Custom Shop stuff, are just too dear for what they offer . . . I'm a musician / producer, not a rich 'collector'.

THE humbucker will always be Gibson while THE single coil will always be fender. Boutique market is great, even the resell values tank when compared to Gibson/Fender

Fender and Gibson are like classic cars, they look amazing. From the mid century modern classic look of the Strat or Jaguar to the snarling devil himself in the SG. PRS headstocks just screams math rock, metal and fret board wankery, not the blues and hard rock.

Fender and Gibson dominate because all the boutiques copies are copying them with the most monor appointments beyond the classic designs, but want extreme premiums for the mods. Why do that? Get the cheaper Fender, add the mods. Now the boutique is laughable as it should be imo. Its only a guitar people, it says nothing about you if you cannot play it well.

Having owned Les Paul’s and a PRS. The PRS was nice but tonally generic/ plain label. Not as musical? Sold it and bought a Les Paul Night and day. So musical. And mojo

my gibsons stay in tune... and I've seen PRS's lose headstocks and got out of tune, sometimes its more about who's playing it and how its set up then anything

My opinion after 35 years of playing guitar, classical guitar major, teach, owned a music store, played out with other musicians and payed for solo classical gigs. ESP rules. I am recently taken by Harley Benton Amarok 7 and a Fussion 3.... Fender and Gibson aren't impressing me much other than everyone thinks they have to play them. It's a popular name brand twice the price and half the quality. It's like driving Ford and pissing on the tires of your neighbors Toyota because it's not an "American" car. Give me an ESP, a PRS, a Gretsch, a HARLEY BENTON FUSSION 3. I'm really down on Ibanez these days also. I think their quality has gone to $H!t! Iconic brands....well....you trade quality for a label. Give me an IPA. Bud Light sucks! Literally. Like who they be sucking now...or what?😂😂😂

@@oig40203 that is called gate keeping. musicians are like politicians, once they get their foot in the door they'll die before letting anyone else through that door. Middle aged venue employees just keep reforming bands and booking themselves, it's like a comic book.

@@sqlb3rn I couldn't disagree more. I work with two medium/large venues that are dying to get younger audiences in the seats. Promoters and venues everywhere are experiencing this. We clearly can't host Taylor Swift, so where are the young bands that are putting out music that puts butts in the seats? The older audiences are thinning out and we are searching. So much of music today is electronic and much of this doesn't tour. It is just a different age.

@@oig40203 well every city is different. In my town the venue employees just keep reforming bands and booking themselves. We have plenty of local bands that have proven themselves, but when a big act comes into town, only the old dogs in their annual new unproven bands are opening. Talent, creativity, and proving yourself is a fucking joke and ain't going to get you booked when the bookers are the ones in the band. Network and connections get you on stage, having an inside lane. Talent and creativity will get you followers on tiktok but won't get your band booked.
