Chainbear delves into F1's incredibly complex technical regulations to explain the rules that were broken by Haas at the Italian Grand Prix, resulting in a protest from Renault that led to Romain Grosjean ultimately being excluded from the race.

It wasn't that well explained. The pictures of Haas' floor didn't make it clear what they'd done at all. I think Giorgio Piola would have been able to help us understand better with his graphics.

I can't understand how Renault can get any criticism for this. Haas had already been told to change the floor or it would be deemed illegal. They didn't do the changes so it was guaranteed they would get disqualified. Renault, their main opposition, had no choice.

the FIA let it pass inspection, but disqualified it after the race following the complaint. this is bizarre behaviour, something sadly to be expected from them
@Formula1Madx

@@illdeletethismusic Yes that does seem a bit strange. I wonder if it is something they would automatically be checking for. I'm not sure. It doesn't change the fact that Haas had previously been told that without the modification the car would be deemed illegal. I can't understand why they didn't just do it. It all seems strange to be honest 🤔

Hey mate, can you do a video on engine modes and how they work? I know it sounds basic but who actually controls it? Do the respective teams choose when to turn them up or down remotely or is the driver able to turn it up from his cockpit? Mercedes and Ferrari seem to have a 'party mode' which the other teams don't seem to have. 🤔
@AngusMcIntyre
@AngusMcIntyre 6 жыл бұрын
The car telemetry is one-way. The team cannot change anything remotely. Only the driver can change engine modes. This behaviour is guaranteed by the common ECU.

You all should be glad Autosport is using fellow KZbinrs to create videos for the channel instead of demanding they be payed when you don't know if they are paying them or not. And that they should be allowed to post there videos anywhere when you don't know if they signed a contract for exclusivity. You don't want to scare away Autosport from giving KZbinrs jobs.

Goes to show that this was a simple rookie mistake by Haas, when you compare what the 'big boys' get up to. Thanks for the explanation. If you are looking for subjects would love to see an explanation of what I will call the injury lights on top of the airbox? After Ericson's crash at Monza the TV feed here in the U.S. said that there were a set of lights atop the air box that would shine red if the driver were injured green if OK. I have never heard that before, and never seen it in practice, except for the TV coverage that showed an example on Bottas Mercedes in the garage. If this exists on all cars how is it activated? If the driver were unconscious does the team activate the lights or is there a system on board reading the bio-metrics of the driver?

I think a disqualification is too harsh especially considering they requested 1 extra round, perhaps a 20 second time penalty would be more fair
@christianbarnay2499
@christianbarnay2499 6 жыл бұрын
What is harsh is that the FIA knew the complete situation way before and even made an official statement about it but never took responsibility to give them the right penalty before the race start. Their warning statement should have consisted in telling Haas what sanction they were facing in case they didn't pass the controls before the Monza race, not saying that they will be allowed in the race and depend on a protestation by another team and an after-race ruling.

If I was writing race rules, the only rule I'd have would be that there had to be an actual driver on board piloting the car, a limit on the length of any actual flame coming from the rear end - in case of jet or rocket propelled vehicles - that it couldn't be wider than 30% of the track width at any given point, to allow overtaking, and no willfull destruction of track or opponents ... The rest is just pedantics.

@RWoody1995
@RWoody1995 6 жыл бұрын
The complexity of the rules isn't the problem really, it's kind of a necessary evil when such big money is involved and you also want to avoid becoming a spec series. The issue is more to do with the freedom teams have to create types of aero that disadvantage cars following them by creating the "dirty air" everyone talks about, hopefully 2019 regs have FINALLY made some headway into fixing that for the first time in a decade in the way they've banned aero that pushes turbulence outside the car.
@wmahomet
@wmahomet 6 жыл бұрын
If they were allowed, they would implement strategy's that minimised the effect of dirty air on trailing cars. Active aero, active boost, stability control. The rules have become a mess of trying to fix problems that weren't there in the first place, but stifling innovation for the sake of making money.

If it must be a vertical line from the reference floor the Haas looks like it matches the rules. Obviously it isn't legal otherwise they wouldn't have DQ him but. I didn't see it say any aero parts must sit back. It just said no parts attached until the second plane which must be vertical 50mm. I can't see why the haas isn't legal tbh.

Yeh it needs to be smoothed, rounded edges when viewed from the bottom. but from that picture, to me id say it would look legit, plus it has the 50mm step before any body work. guess it is just bad pictures to use to explain. from what i can see the Ferrari actually looks less legit than Haas, but again the pictures are generic not really that helpful. oh well. its not like Teams are just going to say yeh feel free to snap all the pics you want from any and every angle.

Right; can anyone answer this question - Why do teams get penalised for changing engines or gearboxes if it's not deemed to be "the right time"? I mean, I understand the point of having a limited number of engines etc. but who gives a toss when a team uses their allocation? Maybe they have a couple of dodgy gearboxes that only last a race or two and then one lasts six races. I've been wondering about this for quite a while.

The FIA is the first we should blame here. They didn't do their regulatory job. They knew the car was illegal before the race and they did nothing. They waited for some other team to protest after the race. And of course the complaining team can only be a team that was suffering during the whole race because of that unfair advantage Haas had. So for the public this appears to be a poor performing team trying to get an unfair advantage by nitpicking on something the authority didn't care about. But their statement that Haas would open themselves to protestations by other teams at Monza if they failed to correct it clearly shows that they cared but refused to do their job before the race. They explicitly told everyone that the Monza race would be unfair and one of the teams would have to take responsibility for filing a protestation after the race to repair that.

Presumably they knew about Haas being told to change it. The FIA said if they used the floor they would be open to protest, so they probably told other teams about it. Teams also have cameras taking pictures of every area of each car, so Renault would see from them as well.

Hard to believe they didn´t had time to reshape that small area that was outside the rules... they just played the "let´s see if nobody noticed it". Since the FIA was going to let them by if nobody protested, Renault did, they lost the points.

+Curious Cat No, they have to design a new "floor" and then send it of to Dallara for them to produce it, then get it home from Dallara to the factory, before they can install it, where other teams are producing there "floor" in house, and there by are faster, and that why HAAS ask for a one race extension, because of it couldn't be done until the Monza GP, the problem is that FIA have approved the way HAAS are building there car, and they should then be aware that it will take HAAS longer time, because a third party is involved... :-)
