Spanish did catch on but only for those who were educated (that was the only medium of instruction). At this time (1899), most people were not educated formally. When Americans took over, they replaced the Spanish system with English. If that had not happened, Spanish would have been the language of education as public education became more universal. In many African countries under French rule, they learned French after independence from France when they started educating the population using French as the medium of instruction.

I've seen this guy interview before. His idea of wealthy is hilarious, spent too much time in NYC. Dudes a retired LT firefighter, almost certainly has a 6 figure pension coming in and that puts him in like the .1% of income earners worldwide and doesn't even have to wake up in the morning.

Mark I like your positivity with the Philippines! you are a good ambasador to an adopted nation. Between I am currently in Singapore I have been working here for 15 years already! It is clean and proper but the only setback is that everything is expensive here. Condo apartments usually cost 4,000.00sgd for a 2 bedroom unit. Eating in restaurants is expensive, taxi is expensive, beer is super expensive together with cigarettes, but electricity and grocery shopping is cheap.

Wow I remember that fateful day on 9/11 while the boys and I sat down for our homeschooling trying to finish at least 3 subjects when my husband called from work and told us to stay home and not go to our planned trip to the State Fair in Hutchinson. When we turned on the TV we saw the second plane ramming into the second tower. My younger son started crying then we all cried. Life in America is never the same after that. Thanks, Charlie for sharing your story. I'm sure it's something you want to forget, but then again, we should not. God bless you both.

Yes ,it is difficult to learn and converse in Bisaya ,even if im Filipino . There are Visayans ,who do speak and understand English well, but do not understand /speak Tagalog. ... Being a new Immigrant in the US in the early 90's ,I went to Subway to order a sandwich .They food server spoke very rapid English ,he asked me " white or wheat" .for me ,i understood it " why do you eat?" ,so ,i responded " becauses,im hungry !" .so he kept repeating the same question and was responding the same answer . He was getting frustrated with me and i was getting angry with him. So,he decided to show me the two types of bread .i ,of course chose "white" . Furthermore ,there is literally no wheat bread in the Philippines then. All we but was White Bread .I didnt even know then about Wheat bread

I'd say almost 98% of Bisaya can perfectly understand tagalog, Filipino subject is Tagalog remember? Palabas sa TV either English or Tagalog. Minsan di lang kami comfortable magtagalog dahil sa discrimination ng mga taga Manila with our tagalog accents.

It's interesting that everyone says Thailand is more hassle than the Philippines. I kinda know. The Thailand E-visa (for example) system is quite something. They use the same questions and make the same demands *regardless of which visa you're applying for"! And there's no way to get past those parts of the form. You must upload something. So even if you're applying for a tourist visa you're faced with uploading details of who in Thailand has invited you to the kingdom and proof of your pension income! Every thing you upload has to be less than (IIRC) 4mg, so you have to use an image compressor because it won't accept your screenshots. I doubt one person in thirty would actually persist with it. The number of tourists who just go somewhere else must be phenomenal. And then there's the fact that you have to buy the plane ticket (dates on the assumption you'll get the visa) BEFORE you know whether you've got the visa!! It's incredible. But then, on the other hand, the Philippines looks less bureaucratic and more chaotic. There's just a terrible lack of clarity. And the volatility in rules, and the power of local authorities, looks quite vexing.

I don't want the Philippines to be known as a country for seggspats. It's better for the Philippines to remain unpopular to foreigners. Better it stays that way than attract undesirable seggs tourists. Philippines should focus on attracting tourists who really care about the culture than those who only come to exploit women. I hope the Philippine government would tear down the red light district in Angeles city.

The 65,000 baht a month is one option, or 800,000 baht in the account. Of course if you don't spend the 65,000 (and I wouldn't) it'll clock up to 800,000. (My pal used a dodgy agent. Paid about €300 and they got an iffy bank employee and (I assume) somebody at immigration to get him the visa. I'd guess you're all in trouble if you get caught doing that).

The river back then was a mess, i had heard it has since be cleaned up under the Prime Ministership of Mr Lee Kwan Yiew, a good man in my opinion. Apparently not, LoL. I have passed through Changi many times since but never went to the city. Bob. Veteran. NZ.
