Diesel particulate filter faults explained on the Ford Transit Connect 1.5 and Land Rover Evoque & Discovery Sport Models
This only relates to the euro 6 models
I have never seen a euro 5 version have these faults

With over 40 years garage experience, you get a print out of the issues that could go wrong after you do a repair. And you get the customer to sign your copy and theirs.... it also states your terms and conditions for the dpf work should a new fault arise... Keeps you correct, and keeps customer correct. I'm so glad a retired as modern cars and customers seem to think you have no clue what your doing and as they paid you money their car should never ever fail again.....

Before you start would be better - "known issue on this model variant - repair is on on a best efforts endeavour "would suffice.

As a TDI specialist in the U.S. I totally get that. There are VERY few that understand diesels in the states. Some of the main dealers are even worse than the independents. I go through this weekly.

I dont believe people are told when buying a desiel that its not like running a petrol car. They dont like being driven short journeys, they suit people doing very high milage.​@@THEjasonTDI

Jimmy you need to make it known in the terms & conditions that with certain scenarios if the split boost hose could have already damaged the dpf & by cleaning it could expose the long term damage already caused is beyond your remit & thus you are not liable. After seeing some of the neglected vehicles you work on I'd have in the Ts&C's all vehicles must be in a serviceable condition & any showing signs of neglect are not your responsibility, owners must take responsibility for their vehicles condition. Hi Jimmy, I can honestly say that the public have got harder to deal with since Covid. There expectations seem to be a lot higher, they are quite often looking to blame someone else for there problems and they have also become quite hostile when you have actually gone out of your way to try and help them the best you can and save them money. This has come from not only myself and my work colleagues but also a lot of workshop owners as well I speak to. Some jobs/people it's easier to just walk away. Pretty hard to not let it dent your confidence, but chin up mate.

Your right and customers also struggle to understand how all this virtuous 'eco-green-emissions' technology is drastically reducing reliability across the transport sector and reducing efficiencies both mechanical and financial. Given half a chance I'd rip the lot out from the EGR back and hit delete in the software,. problem solved.

@@daveblack5109My car is a 20 year old VW with the good old 1.9 PD, thankfully on the vacuum EGR, I removed the lot with a delete pipe then had the eml mapped out. It runs like a dream.

You are dead right, i work with people of a wide range in age. Those under 30 are so thick and fukkin useless and walk around with entitlement bigger than an elephant, i dont help them with their questions coz they either dont understand or they are clinically braindead. The future for society is grim indeed. I'm in my 50's and do all my car maintenance, fix other things, make tools when needed, learnt how to weld. I'm teaching my kids these life skills as they grow up. If we dont, the world is fuked

I've had one of these Connects come back after a couple of weeks. I thought at the time the results of the DPF clean were very good (or so I thought). Pretty low differential pressure. Too good as it turned out. Obvious now you've said it. It got mapped out in the end. Oh, and my left hand index finger is always black now thanks to you 😁😁😁

hi Jimmy I'm a hgv mechanic we had loads of problems with the 2 adblue heater hoses on scania at 400 quid each .they used to put the eml light. scania uk recognised the problem as we in the uk don't get cold enough winters .scania brought put a software update as yes used see a fault code for the hoses but didn't put the eml light on .so yes ford need to do an software update for the uk .hope this helps in anyway

Hello Jimmy , I am GLAD that I found your KZbin videos, I myself have a 26 year old Diesel burner BEST motor I ever bought it has NEVER LET ME DOWN, ALWAYS BROUGHT ME HOME, but the BUT IS iv maintained this vehicle myself since I bought it , it has no dpf but does have a cat , now at 26 years old iv replaced tyres, batteries, I am on my second exhaust, and iv just had to replace the alternator, ALWAYS PASSED IT'S MOT , BECAUSE iv not been a lazy or usless twat Regarding the maintenance of my vehicle , Some people are so bloody USELESS and lazy they cant even wash there car yet they EXPECT it to whistle them along the road with no problems. The number of people I see driving around in cars with lights out , Headlights , taillights, Number plate lights, and the only time it's picked up is at the MOT motorists nowadays sicken me and the way they drive us APPALLING HOGGING THE OUTSIDE LANE , CUTTING JUNCTIONS , AND RUNNING RED LIGHTS , I dare not say anymore as it would infringe my civil liberties 😂😂😂😂.

I've had dpf efficiency below threshold code on these before. The upstream particulate matter sensor or NOx gets clogged so it isnt able to measure correctly. New sensor and a pcm update if one is available usually sorts it out in my experience.

Hi Jimmy I have a Ford Ranger. 2016. They have cleaned the DPF glow plugs oil filters & sensors. You name it they have had a go. Now I just get the engine light turned off at the mot & it always has run like a dream. Happy St Patrick’s to you.

100% agree Jimmy I tell everyone with the 2.0 Landrover engine that I do that they have multiple issues that can cause the Dpf to rebook and the connect 1.5s I see loads that the pressure goes up and down on idle

I think on those the DPF is a long way from the engine, so it remains too cold and always gradually soots up.

Make it clear that properly cleaning the DPF may not get rid of the light, and may also reveal other DPF problems because soot and ash buildup can hide DPF problems.

I was just chatting with local mechanics one of them has a crafter van 2021reg, cant belive how much they cost £60k new! hes already replaced one dpf at a cost of £2k and having issues again hes going to convert it into a camper and sell it

I have a 2015 Honda CR-V twin turbo 1.6 and the inside of its exhaust pipe is still immaculate. However I had a Volvo XC90 diesel new in 2019 that had a filthy sooty exhaust pipe from around 5000 miles until it went away with 30,000 miles. Never any codes, lights or any issues though.

I had a dpf clean done on my transit custom, just over a week later EML light on again, ended up getting new dpf and vaporiser valve fitted at great expense, six months later all blocked up again so I have now had it deleted. The difference is immense, mpg is far far better and it's got all of its grunt back, I wish I'd had it done earlier.

Nice. Who did you go to? Just got myself a 2016 Audi 2.0tdi today with 111k miles and finding out now about EGR cooler replacement and other thinhs😢 I wouldnt mind to give it to someone who knows what they are doing amd hage my EGR delete as well but maybe DPF as well.

🗣What it is about is maintenance or lack of it, perhaps Jimmy before they get to you the EGR is clogged, the DPF differential pressure sensor is duff, the otherday you showed a video with your drill and guitar wire to clean out that tube, all that pressure or continous stream probably overheats the unit or cloggs them at least!

Since the courts have begun to reject their claims against the military in Iraq & Afghanistan these charlatans need another gray train. It doesn’t mean their case has any merit. What’s most worrying is that people give them personal details that they’ll sell on when, inevitably the claim goes nowhere

I have encountered same issue but with a Fiesta 1.5 tdci 2013. Done all that had to be done with DPF, then a couple of weeks later came back with low pressure: noticed an unusual amount of soot behind the wastegate lever on the turbo, also noticed the actuator lever was a bit too wigly, so I thought pressure was escaping through the actuator lever causing the dpf sensor to pick up wrong readings. Replaced the turbo with a second hand one I had as spare, and problem solved no issues anymore, no limp mode, no codes. So it got me thinking, could it be that the high pressure before dpf clean has blown the seals on the wastegate lever.

With a DPF clean, do you run the risk of cracking the core with thermal shock? Blasting in cold fluid into a hot brick sounds a bit risky. Or do you only clean a DPF when it's cold/cooled down?

I've resorted to 3D Printing a part of dpf internals showing people what a good DPF looks like and a cracked one. Showing them helps them understand a little more

Had one at work. Used to love overtaking. It was 4 wheel drive though and these gave a LOT of trouble when Ford, in order to go ‘Green’, started putting lighter oil in the gearbox’s and back axles. Gearbox’s and axles just got shredded. I’ve seen the damage. After a lot of massive inconvenience, the problem was rectified when Ford went back to proper oil. It cost them a lot of money.

I have had a dpf delete done on my ford transit connect (2020) but it wasnt done right and its still coming up with an airflow fault and blowing black suet from exhaust and smoke coming from dpf under the bonnet. Changed the airflow sensor but no difference. Any ideas? Could it be the vapouriser?

I've got a question for you got an issue with ad blue the lights being on for for a while it says I got 150 mi so I filled it up with five litres but nothing has changed came back from Tesco's stopped a couple of times but it keeps telling me I have 150 miles and the engine will not start after that period. I have got a management engine light come on yesterday but when I looked in it it's something about the park sensors not working so I put it down to that but not sure now how much AdBlue do you put in a Skoda Superb is 5 L is enough do I need to add more? Thanks any feedback would be good

I have a LR Disco Sport, had to replace the DPF system at a cost of £2.4k as it was cracked. Mileage was 92k. I also have a Citroen DS3 dsport 2010, 264K on the clock and no big bills!

These are hassle if I do attempt to resolve one I try avoiding doing an on vehicle clean as these dpfs are like cinder toffee, I now warn customers of the possibility it may still require a new dpf, if they have been driven to long with a split boost pipe. The P2002 is logged by the PM sensor after the dpf registering to much soot after the dpf. If there's any signs of soot in the tailpipe I say damage has already been done.

Could it be, that after cleaning the flow is too good compared to the last pressure readings. The software which has been monitoring the steady time based increase in pressure now assumes it broke open, when actually the flow is as good as if you replaced it. What about if you tried a 'replace dpf filter' routine, to tell the ECU to reset all of it's DPF flow/pressure parameters?

Ive a 21 automatic transit connect on a lease and every few weeks, it states exhaut filter overloaded. Main dealers blame the automatic transmission and wont do anything to clean it..

I keep having issues when it comes to resetting the DPF values after cleaning and it just says security pin needed so I’m wondering if Ford are trying to keep them in-house for some reason Snap-on scan tool requests a pin Autel just refuses to do it saying network error

Would it be a blocked adblue injector or NOX sensor. Your probably aware they form crystallisation around the injector. Just a thought. 👍

Yep, sounds like a design issue, designed to fail to cost part replacements in the future! More people need to understand that! Nothing wrong with the service or part, but annoying fail light will need expensive part replacements to make it go away!😅

I worked in a different sector gas central heating repair and installation. It became 50 50 on boiler repairs with customer satisfaction. This was due to poor design and boiler and control complexity. You could repair on Monday and the next day have different component fail and have a customer having a go at you. I left the trade after nearly 40 years and now sleep and rest easy. The public are at times their own worst enemy

I absolutely agree with you, being self employed in the boiler repair industry is a minefield, I've just retired at age 60 from the trade, despite the constant offers of work and promises of fantastic money, I wouldn't go back to it, I also sleep well not having to deal with customers, I'll never go back to fixing boilers 👍

Yep, you need to defend yourself on these cases, where not even the dealer can sort it out, except by firing the parts canon, to get the same result, only more expensive. I think it's up to the manufacturer to look at these problems and find a proper solution. In the meantime, it's better to buy a different van.

I believe this is a manufacturing issue,, thats why the dealers don't do any maintenance or repair ,they just throw a new part.

I’ll definitely stick with my 20 year old 1.9 PD TDI VW. My sprinter work van has now done 256,000, the dpf is regenerating every 400 miles or so now, thankfully I’m long distance so it gets to do its full cleaning cycle. Would your dpf clean flush out “the ash from the bin” ? (That video you made describing was brilliant) Or is it new dpf time ? Edit, I don’t own the van it’s a company van, 69 plate 316 Luton

The 1.6d I had did 207k no issues. The 1.5d had 2 add blue failures and a knock sensor. Ford had for ages both times and seem baffled by the add blue malfuncion that kept happening.

Do you have the same issues in the Jaguar XE's? My 2017 20d just had the P2463 code. I just put some additive before and it goes away. I'm the middle of that process again, so I'm wondering if it's something that I can expect to be an issue like on the LRs

@@gsummy4062 I did a lot of work on mine to get it clean. It works fine now. As for the delete… it smells pretty bad if you do it. These things are truly stressful tho…

The ford 1.5 is there own engine. The 1.6 was psa and shared with the others.

I have 2 Citroens with 1.6 engines with over 320,000 Kms on them, never had a problem with the dpf. I cleaned it off the car though at 290,000 Kms just as a part of a service, it wasn't causing any issues, I just cleaned it out, they are very easy to access its right at the front of the engine. Plus I change the oil every 12,000 Kms and use high grade stuff and the top tier diesel like v power or circle k miles plus.

@@chrishart8548Thanks for reply - but the newer peugeot's / citroens have a 1.5 diesel engine in them - is this a ford unit or a PSA unit (1.6 engine - made smaller ) ?? I did not know if they were still sharing engines or not now PSA has been taken over ! thanks

Admire your professionalism and your competence in what u do but what is the point of owning any diesel anymore given a choice,give me petrol anyday and I do have a diesel van and thats the problem, no petrols on offer on most.

Jeez I had a DPF on my Audi that would go off every 70-100kms. Drove me nuts. Audi part paid to change the whole system but it still didn't fix it.

My tiguan and my friend's passat both got P2002 code , local garage erase the code and come back after approx 100 miles or 1-2 weeks. Many times now and anyone know is it software problem or EGR problem?

​@@hedydd2it will not fail the MOT but it is technically against the LAW. If the dpf is still in place but empty inside it will still pass. Mines been removed for 5 years now. Obviously its more sooty out the exhaust buy at least the car isn't breaking down every 3 days

That’s not as easy as it used to be. These post 2016 vehicles are Euro6 emissions & unlike earlier versions have never been run without all the stuff that’s fitted for Euro 6. As such deleting the DPF or Ad blue systems in the software usually creates more problems than it solves.

Yep... I had a DPF fault and I had it knocked out, I had the EGR and FAP fluid mapped out and it passes the MOTand still does 64mpg on a run with no significant black soot. All this emissions control in nonsense.

@@TeriWilde I don’t know how old you are but emission controls have made a massive difference in air quality even in small villages and towns. Buildings used to turn black with a combination of soot and acid rain, the latter due to sulphur in the fuel. A couple of generations of kids have had their intellect reduced due to the massive amounts of lead once added to fuel for no good reason apart from adding to one company’s profits. Today engine power has doubled or trebled per unit of swept volume compared to the 1980’s while fuel consumption has halved when comparing similar cars of the generations. CO2 has declined by a similar amount as consumption has improved. Soot emissions have virtually disappeared thank goodness, because I remember walking around London in my youth and by evening a face wipe would result in a blackened cloth almost as if I’d been working down a coal mine. NOx is the big one as it is unseen for the most part, certainly nowadays where the haze, almost fog, it still causes in many Asian cities, has all but been eliminated by EGR and Adblue. You may take your totally selfish attitude and stick it where the sun don’t shine but most of us like clear skies and less bronchitis and lung cancer.

I have a 2016 1.5TDCi Euro 6 Transit Connect, it doesn't have AdBlue. I do regular maintenance with OEM parts. I saw only once the message "Exhaust filter full, drive now" because I have used for short trips in winter. Didn't see it again as I make sure to do longer trips. What can I do to prevent DPF damage in the first place?

Recommended Oil, Service the car fairly often, drive a lot on motorways/longer trip, so you seem to be doing everything already mate

Would it be better for you to give the vehicle owners a notification before you do the work, That way then they are aware of some draw backs of a cleaned DPF. maybe just have it written down and just have them read it before you proceed.

Hi I watch your channel on KZbin and you keep getting problems with code p2002 I had that problem tried two garages still had the problem I got the car a full service with fuel filter and it neither done it again until the filter was due to be done please give this I try my car is a ford fiesta 1.5 Graham

Service(oil change) and fuel filter have nothing to do with p2002. You need to try a dpf cleaner(added into diesel tank) and go on long drives to let the dpf regenerate(self clean). Motorway speed for a good hour and do it often

x2 Transit Connect's both split hose both cleaned & both failed within 2 weeks 2020 & 2021, the split hose definitely appears to cause an issue, in addition to that we have had x3 2020 Connects with failed steering racks, one required x4 within 2 months, Ford refused to fit anymore or offer compensation

Mercedes benz do a test for dpf efficency faults, it's get a white cloth rub it inside the tail pipe. If it goes black then the dpf is faulty! I'd be surprised if they don't make it a standard check on mot for soot in the tail pipe, then MOT fail if the dpf is not working etc

And that is why I have resisted buying any nearly new vehicles. There is just too much shite on them to go wrong. My VW T4 has no CAT, no DPF, and no Ad blue. And no error or warning lights on. Turn key and go.

Modern day ford transits are rubbish go back to pre 2010 you could buy a transit do 300,000 miles in town or out on the motorway and they would keep going till they rot! Modern ones are just full of mechanical issues often pre 100,000 miles

Used to be a time when Ford vans would run, and keep on running until the body rotted away. These days, the Ford Van body doesn't get a chance to rot because the Engine & DPFs end up rotten long before the corrosion can get a chance to set in! 😂😂😂😂😂

By the time the ports get clogged, the sensor is bad. Clean the ports & replace the sensor. They don't come back.

Essentially the manufacturers have avoided making a cleaner engine by installing an over-efficient or dense filter… this inevitably clogs up. This will be the next big PPI claim,, believe me.

These Ford Connects have a Mega Problem, even FORD can't cure them, They had one for 6 Months in Trust Ford Dagenham they could not fix in which they loaned the customer a vehicle for the length of time it was there, they are a complete Nightmare, I know about a 2nd 69 Plate one also Ford in Norwich could not fix after 3 attempts, the customer returned that one to a dealer he purchased it from as the dealer could not afford to keep spending cash on it, The main dealer ended up sending it to a Car Auction.
