@thoughtricity42963 ай бұрын
I think Dan is really great in calls with other people, like in the recent call with Pisco about the supreme court justice, as well as bringing out the content for that PC builder with the "assistants" back like a year ago. Anything else is the only content from Destiny that I don't like because I feel like the "banter" is really annoying and sort of unnatural, e.g. I think Destiny's appearance with Dick Masterson on no jumper worked really well, but not on anything else. The conversation gets weirdly tripped up with the constant "gotchas" between Destiny and Dan.

Thank you very much for this video. It added a lot of important context, and it made me rethink my stance on this. As someone who has benefitted from a lot of the content of Dr. K since he started streaming on twitch a long time ago, I am feeling a bit defensive due to the good he has done. HOWEVER: I think you are making great points to the 1on1 Shows on Twitch and while many of them helped me by seeing similar spects in the shows participants and having Dr. K help them, he helped my by proxy. I agree that Dr. K should stop doing them, to protect those who come on the show, even if they have and are helping me and others like me. I think Your context with the experimental programs in your past contextualizes why the new online therapy of Dr. K might be problamatic, but I think that the core idea is good, it just needs to be executed correctly and with the neccesary polish and safety. If he can build a coaching program with only qualified and capable coaches that help the customers while ensuring privacy and other essential aspects are ensured while providing it for a very accessible price for people who wont have the funds for conventional therapy, I think that is a good thing. Also his online course seems to be decent from what I have seen, but I think that the other things are more important. All in all, I am thankful for this video, and I hope to see more fruitful discussions coming from this. Some Moments where you have talked about Dr. K snarkly stem from the format of the discussion (anything else), maybe I missed some more normal discussions, so I would not worry if people misunderstood you. Here you made yourself clear and even changed my mind on some things. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for sharing, Dan. I've lived in Utah/Idaho and am very familiar with the services you're speaking of. Mental health care is a very difficult topic in this country, no matter how hard we seem to try to change that perception. I agree that it's not necessarily a good thing to do out in the open - If Dr. K maybe had like a "I've been talking to a client that is experiencing these sorts of situations, and they've felt x,y,z about it," that would be a different topic. But full on therapy sessions for content? Feels icky on my end.
@EtanonLOL3 ай бұрын
If you watch any of the lectures it's very clear it isn't "full-on" therapy. Therapy involves trying to fix an issue and is usually paired with clinical evaluations and sometimes medications. Dr. K simply just has people talk about things they are dealing with, and pokes and prods with some questions or a different perspective to help them become aware of and get a better understanding of what is actually going on.
@wisemage03 ай бұрын
@@EtanonLOL If it was "very clear" he wouldn't need disclaimers and people wouldn't be calling him their therapist.
@EtanonLOL3 ай бұрын
@@wisemage0 The misunderstanding comes from people either engaging with Dr. K's content or having conversations with him that just are misinformed. When I say it's very clear, I mean objectively what Dr. K does is meaningfully different than therapy, however to a layman they are not aware of what actual therapy and is, so it's helpful on his part to make that distinction clear. The exception to this of course is Reckful, which was categorically wrong for a variety of reasons, but overstepping a boundary in one instance is a separate argument from what category is this thing that Dr. K is doing as the general structure of his channel.
@large_mango3 ай бұрын
@@EtanonLOL It is definitely not clear that it isn't full blown therapy. Have you been in therapy? Have you seen Dr K's interviews? They appear exactly the same. Poking and prodding with questions about someone's life like Dr K does is exactly how therapy goes.

@youtubeacc694693 ай бұрын
nah. "not financial advice" implies that they want you to go in an on an investment, and in todays world, to probably use you for short term gain. Where as Dr K explicitly says "this is not therapy, nothing we are doing is like therapy. We are simply having a conversation about mental health". The only way you can think his conversations with individuals is therapy is if youve never gone to therapy. Talking about mental health =/= therapy. The analogy I would say is its like having a casual conversation with Waren Buffet about finances, youre going to listen and probably benefit from that talk but in no way is it financial advice. Thats why Dan is so unbelievably wrong. He watched a clip maybe even watched the final reckful video but the totality of Dr Ks work just isnt therapy and Dan is completely wrong in every assumption he has had. I don't know if this is directly maps onto what you said about "not being able to legislate going onto the show" but I took a break from therapy earlier this year. And I started seeing a student counsellor at my uni. She wasn't a therapist but a counsellor. And it did mess with my head a little in trying to draw a distinction between what therapy is and what she provided for me because they were awfully close. At least in the content of things I discussed with her. She never stopped me from bringing anything up but always encouraged I speak toa therapist about certain things because they would be better trained to help me. But yea it took a lot of effort to make notes before I went in and met her and decide on what I should talk about and what I should leave out and save for my therapist (one I still don't have but will in the future) I just mention this example because yea no amount of "this isn't therapy you can opt outwhenever you want to" etc. works.

Although Dr. K provides a lot of self help advice for several people, I think him putting confidential settings into the public eye puts not only himself in danger, but the person he’s “interviewing” as well. Like Dan mentioned, the things people shared could be used against them. These shared moments can range from bad habits to extremely traumatic experiences, which if it were to fall onto bad actors, could be used against them. I think that’s what Dan’s trying to convey in this video. Personally, this is in the same essence of a lot of ‘reality’ television, where someone’s private life is put onto full display. The consequences from those could be translated onto what Dr. K has been doing as well. The difference here though, is that an audience member has more degrees of intimacy with the person Dr. K interviews. I agree with Dan, there should be more of a cautious approach to how Dr. K conducts these interviews.

You should have explained the comparison between the insane youth camps and the public therapy sessions that Dr. K is doing. I feel like the streamers who willingly choose to participate to Dr. K's show are much more aware of the potential outcomes since they are online professionally. On the other hands, the parents ditching their kids to the desert camps and the people running the camps are much less aware of the risks and the kids are also not going willingly. I agree that Dr. K made a major mistake when he promised Biron that he would see him on the long term. I think this very likely played a part in Biron's death. That being said, I don't think that livestreamed therapy as a concept is exploitative or a net negative. Dr. K's mistake could have happened in a private setting and have the same effect. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Aw damn, Dan is married?? I got no shot. Yeah but I'm a Dr. K fan, and when I heard the criticism surrounding what happened to Reckful, I watched the Dr. K & Reckful videos. At some point, I feel like Dr. K should have been able to recognize that this was going too far, especially for someone as vulnerable as Reckful was at that time. Dr. K should have then pulled the plug on the public "non-therapy" sessions and maybe offered to work out some kind of deal with Reckful in private about actual therapy (since Dr. K promised he'd be there for Reckful). I can see this now as someone who has been in a similar vulnerable situation psychologically, who also went through interventions (religion-based though) that were too much for me to handle. And it should have been obvious to others who were in charge of the religion-based interventions that it was too much for me to handle. It feels predatory. There's a definite one-sided power dynamic. And the only way anything changes about people being taken advantage of is when someone dies by their own hand. It shouldn't have to get to that degree
