I would disagree. I don't care how good your story is, and I probably wouldn't even give your film a chance to find out how good the story is, if it's shaky and looks like it was filmed on a children's toy camcorder. Bad image can bring someone right out of the story just as much as bad audio can, and I personally wouldn't even bother to make a film if it wasn't going to look as beautiful as something that would come out of Hollywood.

Everyone can afford gear that’s capable of Hollywood-level appearance nowadays, no excuses. Everyone looks over image for some reason... there wouldn’t even be a film if it weren’t for the image. I prefer it. And you're right, even though it's only 1080p digital sensor, matched with a nice bit of glass it just brings back an old school visual quality that's a real love it or hate it look. I purchased an OG BMPCC at the end of last year; I'm just starting out, and wanted something with a really good image. Regarding all the negatives that are said about it, I don't really care, other than the monitor. The monitor is terrible, and when I have the budget, I will be purchasing an external monitor. However, I think it's great to learn on. Being that it's fully manual, there is nothing to help you get good footage (ok, there is auto-focus, however I'm using vintage Nikon mount lenses with a 'dumb' adapter, so for me auto-focus is not an option). It forces you to really learn how to use the camera correctly. It also forces you to learn color grading. But, that image!!!

I disliked having to find the right media, battery, having to be super careful with the inputs for fear it would break. All those little things add up. I wish they would have created the BMPCC4K in the same body with better/upgraded parts, make it able to take multiple types of media and a better battery solution. I get the why I loved it in the first place though. The 4k isn't the same. It seemed like the pixels on it were unique. May have been just me...

I bought a BMPCC in 2020 and had issues finding an SD card that would work properly with it. I bought whole array od SanDisks and none of them worked. When I tried to find any info about it, lot of people have written that the problem is that the new SanDisk, even though they apper to be same as the older ones, are different in a way that BMPCC can't see them. I found a Kingston SD that worked for me, but even though, some of the time it didn't show up when I turned the camera on. It eventually did, but.. it didn't make me want to rely on it, when I had a GH4 working all the time, many hours on one charge.. For me as a beginner it was neccessary to realize, that no matter how big the potential of my gear is, I cannot blindly hope that RAW, ProRes or any specs of the gear will salvage the trash I create. And that was a healthy bit of experience. Unfortunately, Metabones Speedbooster is still lying around, anybody interested...?

I love the reasons listed in this video. I never owned a bmpcc but always wanted to. I bought a 5Dii recently for very similar reasons. I probably wouldn't use the bmpcc to make money at this point, but I would use this camera to get better and practice creativity.

I waited so impatiently for the 4K but once I saw its harsher highlight roll off, I cancelled my order and stuck to my original Pocket. Plus, it takes C-mount 16mm lenses that have a lot of character! Enjoy your “new” Pocket!

I have a small production company and today my only gear is an original bmpcc with switar prime lenses from the 50's and 60`s, a canon tv zoom and an angenieux 12-120. Unbeatable image from "the poor man's arri", as some called it.

The BMPCC is capable of producing footage with a distinct look that many people (like me) prefer. The 4K version is better for run-n-gun and commercial work (very clean, sharp, & detailed), but a BMPCC properly cinema rigged on a tripod is excellent for narrative shooting.
@OfTwoLands4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Love both those cameras but they are quite different. The og bmpcc is definitely a slower approach.
@andrewgandy3444 жыл бұрын
Tldr/Warning: Make sure you research the Bmpcc's SD card issue first before buying it! I've loved your videos made with the bmpcc. The look out of that sensor avoids the digital "video" look that I feel that a lot new cameras have, like the bmpcc 4k. I actually bought a bmpcc myself over a year ago, however, I immediately had to return it because at least at the time, the camera wouldn't take any write sd cards past a certain manufacturing date because the camera's firmware was out of date. From my research, Black Magic consider it a legacy item, and no longer support its firmware; even if it's completely bricked for everyone. Still sad about that purchase, but I have a Nikon z6 now.

I periodically think about getting this camera. I love the deep focus you can achieve with the super 16 sensor and I have an awesome 16mm 0.95 Schneider Kreuznach lens that would be awesome on here. I have to shoot in 2k to use it on the BMPCC4K anyway.

Kicking myself for selling my old BMCC 2.5k EF when I upgraded to the 4k. The 4k is great and I wouldn't give it up for the world right now. I don't miss carrying that 2.5k around or having everyone I meet stare at and ask me about my camera. But boy do I miss that old image.

I upgraded to the 4K last year but kept my BMPCC. I still use it occasionally for certain work, particularly when the smaller size is an advantage, and I can't imagine ever selling it. Both cameras have their uses but the BMPCC will be a sentimental favourite and, most importantly, it shoots great footage.

I have so many more questions! 1. Do you shoot in Prores or RAW? 2. Do you still mainly grade using FilmConvert and the KD 5207 (as mentioned in your previous workflow) 3. whats you fave lenses? - do you like to stick native ? do you utilise any stabilised lenses like the lumix 12-35? 4. whats your normal rig setup?
@OfTwoLands4 жыл бұрын
1. 99% of the time Prores 2. Yes I do 3. for the OG my favourite lens is the Lumix 12-35 IS :0 4. All handheld, just the small cage and if I need more power the battery plate. But 90% of the time nothing, just camera lens and internal battery :).

I have two BMPCC OGs and do not plan to sell them. For me the small form factor combined with an OIS lens is very convinient. The organic film look is also very nice. So while I'm currently getting to know my Sigma fp, I see that these small cameras still have a use for me personally in situations where I want to bring something small and just film handheld fast. The only major drawback is that they are really picky about SD cards, so need to keep good care of those I have gotten for them, otherwise the cameras are paperweights
@OfTwoLands4 жыл бұрын
They sure are powerful cameras for the size !! How do you like the FP ? Cheers
@innstikk4 жыл бұрын
@@OfTwoLands Actually I like the Sigma fp a lot. I like the results from it with Sigma Art primes (that I already owned as I am also using Sigma's Foveon cameras). A smallrig cage, a home-made Samsung t5 holder, some nisi vario nd filters, a Weebill-s and a tripod and one is good to go for 4k 12-bit RAW. In addition to a Davinci resolve license. Like that it doesn't have fans. Hopefully, Sigma will implement one feature of being able to change aperture and iso with the wheels in stead of aperture and shutter which is common for photographers, but not a deal breaker. ISO capabilities are way better than the BMPCC OG at least :-) I found out that 4K is not so forgiving with just a monopod as jitters are easy to see. So will need some time getting to know all the new toys :-D

Even I have Pocket 4k but still keep my OG BMPCC. The one I have now is my third one (my first one was stolen, the 2nd one was broken after using one year, then I got my third one two years ago). Can't agree with you more on the third reason: the image is so organic and charming. Hope you still keep your original SanDisk SD card (for the RAW), the new SanDisk SD not compatible with the original pocket anymore.

Interesting perspective, I just bought the Pocket 4k as an experiment to learn about colour grading and working with raw footage, as I have always worked with Sony mirrorless cameras. It's been more of a tool to improve and experiment than a work camera for the shoots that I normally do. It's been a nice difference so far.
