Ive been carrying SOG multitools for 7 years just for super strong pliers you could flip open like a butterfly knife. Switched to the Free P4 a few months ago for the one handed tools and one handed opening pliers and haven't looked back. I recently used the phillips head to take on some severely rusted screws and the P4 did better than any screwdriver I had on hand. The ruler and file are sad, but better than nothing.

I have a small collection of multittools (Leatherman, Gerber, Victorinox, SOG; Swiss Tech, Roxon and a few generic i dont even know the brand, i bought them on flea markets and garage sales), and Leatherman have the best pliers IMO, i love the pliers on my MUT and the Wave+ and i just bought the Free P4 as my present for my birthday a few days ago :)

I want the rebars tools in the p4 (but with a diamond file). Dont care for the bit exchanger for the same reason you mentioned.

If the p4 had the tools from the rebar. Well now you're talking. What a fantastic tool that would be.

I purchased a magnetic stainless adapter ($25) that fits over the Phillips that accepts 1/4 and the flat Leatherman bits. Yes, you can modify the P4 and add the bit insert but that is $45 requires a tear down and you loose the box cutter which I love and most importantly voids your warranty. Bit adapter that slides over the Phillips will not void the warranty and I can use much cheaper 1/4 inch bits.

You are correct that the P4 is more streamlined and may fit better in your pocket. But, I don’t carry a multi tool in my pocket. There are a few things that I like about my Wave+. First the file is indispensable and that is a dealbreaker for me. Also, I have the multi-bit array and the extender that is also critical because having the screwdriver bit so close to the body of the multi-tool makes it impossible to turn the screw. And finally, the tiny, eye glass screw driver is important to adjust the declination on my compass. Without that tool, nothing else works. So, all of the multi tools on the market have their advocates because their chosen multi tool because it works best for their specific needs. You like the P4 and I like the Wave+ and somebody else likes the Gerber or the Swiss ARmy tool. Not only is it a matter of preference, it’s a matter of matching the tool to your needs. But, if all I had was a P4, I’d make it work for me..

It’s all about preferences and what you really do with it, I bought a Wave and after playing with it a few hours I sent it back and purchased a Free P4. I felt in love with it instantly. I think that people that do real work with it prefer wave, Free P4 suits better for people like me that it’s not so pro at fixing things, just doing light work.

I carry the p4. It saves me trips to the truck when in the middle of a job. I usually grab a klien 11-1 impact and my impact drill and that does most small jobs.

Hi thanks for your video. I do have Free P2 and It has the plier pivot issue that gets stiffed everytime I squeezed it. I think its on going issue with the Free series hence i would'nt recommend it.

So long story short “I carry P4 over Wave because I like it more”. I was undecided which to buy between those two and I’ve bought wave. I played a few hours with it and I packed it in order to return it and ordered Free P4. Wave is so stiff and difficult to access the tools from inside cause you have to dig with the finger nail in those sharp bumps and they are also stiff. The Free P4 looks so much easy to operate as a light EDC thing.

I don’t necessarily like the p4 more, they each have their pros and cons, i carry the p4 because the tools are easier to access and it carries better

did you consider getting the Free P2? it is much lighter and easier to carry
@davidjaski60032 жыл бұрын
I have the Free P2 and you are right it is easier to carry but i prefer to have the extra tools on the p4 and i hate combo blades. Keep an eye out i have a new product ill be releasing in the coming months a special way i carry, that the extra weight of the tool doesn’t bother 👊👊

The magnets are a real problem for a lot of people. Luckily Leatherman design its tools to be dismantled for cleaning if necessary. Not like Victorinox....

I've watched a couple dozen video about the Free series. Not one of them convinced me to make the switch. With the possible exception of the serrated blade, not one of the tools equals, much less surpasses, the Wave's. Hell the Ozark Trail Multiforce is a better tool at about a quarter the price..

I work in a metal fab shop so I definitely can’t get with the magnets. The wave has better outboard tools in my opinion and I actually prefer it’s pocket clip over the one on the free. I’ve had the wave for years and couldn’t recommend it more
@diegolainfiesta2 жыл бұрын
Man, the carry clip on the Wave + is much better, it is a deep carry clip. You are really trying to justify the P4 is better, when the Wave + is more capable and is the top 1 seller. Just say you like it more...and that is it.
@davidjaski60032 жыл бұрын
Hey Diego in my experience the carry clip on the wave is loose fitting and does not come close to the clip on the free series but im glad it exists, i agree that the wave is a great tool and in ways is the more capable leatherman. But the free is slimmer to carry and more comfortable and easier to use. I have issues with the both of them but when it comes to carrying it on a daily basis in my experience the free is the more pleasant to deal with. I love both tools and i just think they serve different purposes

I find both rulers equally useless. What in the heck does anyone measure that is no more than an inch long? As for the sloppy ruler on the Wave, don't even get me started. I do use the file on each. If you are using the file to repair torn fingernails, they both work. The P4 file is more versatile; the Wave file is more functional. That having been stated, the steel side of the Wave file is...useless, and the diamond side wears off quickly. The cross-cut P4 file is useful, and the single-cut side less so. The P4 file gets into all sorts of places, but would be more useful if it could file on its edge. I use the serrated blade on the P4 for many things. I would not want to give that up. The plain edge blade I use for fewer things, but would not give it up, either. One of the things I most like about the P4 over the Wave, is not having to look for those bits that keep falling out. Those bits really aren't very good, anyway. With the P4, I always know what I have. The P4 is easy to use; the Wave is a pain. Something is always in the way. As for the metal filings, I am often in a machine shop. Filings get everywhere: my clothes, my shoes, on my arms, on my neck. Sometimes, filings get in my P4, but nothing that affects the function. Some soap and warm water with a magnet fIxes this. My biggest issue is that I keep spilling gasoline on the P4. Getting the smell off is difficult.
@davidjaski60032 жыл бұрын
Wow! I love hearing your experience with both tools! I do find myself using the depth guage on the p4 quiet often for small parts. Did you ever have an issue with the pliers on the p4 stiffening up? It’s been a recurring issue with 4-5 ive owned.
@googleuser66352 жыл бұрын
@@davidjaski6003 I have not experienced that. I guess I never thought of using it as a depth gauge, but I'm not sure what the markings are, anyway. The only depth gauge I would likely need is for tires, and the air pressure gauge does that--or a penny. I do not EDC an air pressure gauge, but there is one in each of my vehicles. My most disliked thing about my P4 concerns the pocket clip. It is not straight, relative to the scale. Furthermore, one outer edge by the slot does not match the other. The only tools I have not used on the P4 are the crimper, the ruler, and the wire stripper. I never figured I'd use the bottle opener, but I did, to open the plug on the base of a flagpole. If they changed the single-cut side of the file to diamond, fixed the pivot/angle of the scissors, added file to the edges of that implement, added a sharp gut hook to the serrated blade, and changed the ruler to the package opener from the Wingman, the P4 would be greatly improved, in my opinion. The saw is my least-used blade. If the file was going to replace one of the large blades, I would swap with the saw. Still, I do use the saw, and would not want to it any shorter. Since I only use the file to repair my torn fingernails, longer would only cause more harm. Just a slight motion with the file removes a lot of nail. Although none of the edges have burrs or any such thing, some of the back edges of the blades are a bit...angular. A bit of smoothing would not hurt. One other thing about the Wave. Bit changers are useless without bits. You have to carry those bits. My P4 gets used almost daily. As pertains to its implements, when I use a tool on the P4, I do not wish I had some other tool; for any such case, I carry that tool, as well. I do EDC a knife, but it has its own purposes. I would not EDC the tools in the P4 as they are used. For example, I would not otherwise EDC a needlenose pliers, a scissors, a serrated edge blade, a saw, a bottle opener, a can opener, a wire cutters, a crimper, a file, a wire strippers, or a "regular" pliers. Together, I am willing to carry these items, and--for me--they are worth carrying in this package.
