This is not your typical watch review! In today's travel vlog style video, I share my adventures in Indianapolis, Indiana for The Urban Gentry X Moyer Fine Jewelers Watch Show event where I met many fellow watch enthusiasts, including several KZbinrs. I also discuss my ever evolving watch collection, why I fell out of love with Omega Speedmasters and reasons why the Panerai Luminor is so fanatically beloved. In this video I also share a full in-depth review of the Accutron Astronaut-one of the most iconic pilot watches from Accutron-including positives, negatives, design elements, and where it's positioned in terms of value and the history of the brand. Is it time for me to finally sell my Rolex GMT Master II (aka the Pepsi) for this new 2023 Accutron release? Join me to find out, along with some fun travel vlog highlights, and a recap of the fantastic Watch Show event. What do you think about the watches featured in this video? Please share in the comments!

And I admire that you don’t pander to public pressure of what’s popular but instead cover what you love. Fortis, squale, bulova, universal Genève, to name but a few. Be proud. Truly

Accutron Astronaut temps me. My father flew the SR-71 and if he were a watch guy I might pull the trigger for him, but $3500 is a lot for this one. He certainly has earned it from raising me and keeping the free world free and all. I’ll keep it on my watch list - maybe in the future.

The Accutron had the name "Astronaut" added to the dial in 1962 to honor both NASA's X-15 hypersonic research pilots, among whom Neil Armstrong, and the Mercury 7 astronauts. At least 8 of the 12 X-15 pilots wore an Accutron Astronaut pilot watch during flight and astronaut Gordon Cooper wore his during MA-9 (May 1963) and Gemini V (August 1965)! The David Clark pressure suit worn by the CIA pilots flying the Lockheed A12 came with a special wrist pouch for the Accutron Astronaut tuning fork movement pilot watch ! Photos at #MoonwatchUniverse

I really enjoy your channel. I love my PANERAI I never thought I would own one because of the size, but when I tried one on I had to have it. I just turned 47 and have been collecting watches since I was 8. My grandfather got me into watches and he taught me how to work on them. Most of my collection is affordable watches of every kind. I really enjoy tool watches the most because I can use the dive bezel to time anything I need to also you can time even better with a chronograph. I have many different complications among my different watches like perpetual calendar. Pretty much everything except for a Turbillion but I don’t have the bud for that. The Pan is the only “expensive” watch I’ve bought. I have a nice vintage Omega and Rolex I inherited. There’s just such great value in the Pan. Now I want to check out the AccuTron GMT. Edit: after seeing the price I will have to hold off. I enjoy my cars more than my watches.

Would have preferred the precisionist movement in the Accutrons. I was very excited by the Railroad watch they reissued but it was 34mm and updated with a mechanical movement. Seems like a miss updating the movement and making it so small. The appeal of the original accutron RR watch was its extreme accuracy over mechanical because rail workers could get docked pay if their watch was off. Then if you could overlook the movement the small size made was a deal breaker. I'm glad they updated the astronaut.

I have also rationalised my collection as my tastes have changed. I currently own a GMT Master 1675 on an oyster band, a Panerai Marina on a NATO strap and an Omega Seamaster 2254 which my favorite Seamaster. I have sold my three other Seamaster 300s as well as my Speedy. Was just not wearing them. Other watches I have is a Seiko SKX008 (which is a 007 with updated NH36 movement, Dr Seikostan Atlas coin-edge bezel and a faded red and grey 009 insert. It also has a signed crown and a Strapcode Super Jubilee bracelet), a similarly upgraded Vostok Amphibia (also a bezel and insert from Dr Seikostan) on a tropic strap. And then lastly an Hanhart Primus Racer.

As it does not have a tuning fork it’s a massive no from me. Please don’t wind your 214 anti clockwise! They are fragile and that can put some stress on the index and pawl fingers and potentially damage them. Many professionals don’t service these because they don’t know how to or no longer have the phasing tools required. They are all now in the hands of hobbyists like myself. There is a large online community for the appreciation of tuning forks with many other hobbyists offering services of these movements. An astronaut with a Sellita movement is complete heresy in my opinion and Bulova are just cashing in on the aesthetic

Great video TGV, the editing was phenomenal! The Accutron Astronaut is very nice but $3,500 is like you said "a bit rich" as there are "nicer" GMT offerings at half that price. I picked up the small 43mm Lunar Pilot and I personally feel it's a better looking watch at a much more affordable price point. Yes it's a quartz but the accuracy of the NP20 movement is fantastic.

I recently picked up my first Panerai (Pre-owned PAM000112) & immediately after located an image of the Flottiglia Mas logo (a skull clutching a rose between it's teeth) There is now a poster in my residence as well as an image as my phone screen. I’m not happy with this Astronaut reissue. As it has a mechanical rather than the electronic movement used in the original. Which is odd as they’ve already got a modern version of that 60s movement in their contemporary high-frequency quartz! Why didn’t they use a variant of that caliber instead? That would of been far more authentic to the original. Oh and it’s way too expensive for what it is, even as a ‘Swiss Made’ limited edition. Maybe they’ll follow this up with a non-limited, more affordable Quartz powered version down the line? Now that, I might be interested in 😉

Excellent episode, loved getting to see some of the event from afar. The Accutron reissue really turned out great. I love the bracelet, and *really* love how cleverly they managed to tuck the crown away. Collection-wise, I think at this point everything in the box is a field watch or a g-shock. It's not a bad situation, and I find that even though the watches are fairly similar, they each offer something unique. From Oris to Sinn to a little quartz Beams Plus piece from Japan, they all have a personality of their own and are the right watch for a specific moment.

Realizing that I can safely say, one day I may be interested in most of the watches that you have embraced, but I doubt I will every own them. I've loved my tool watches all my life and have worn them with a suit and tie and in extremely formal situations. I felt no shame or remotely felt out of place wearing them, and I never will. Dress and luxury watches will never be my style. To each their own.

I get it...but still annoyed Accutron didn't use Bulova's 262KHz movement in the Astronaut. It could have had a smooth sweep and still been electronic, just like the original, and much much much cheaper. Typically I am not a big quartz fan, but this was one watch that should have been a smooth sweeping quartz.

To answer the question I guess watches I fell out of love are my vintage bubble back watches I the time I thought they were so cool to have but as time went on I wore them less and less I guess it was my way of trying to hold on to the past and as time went by I began to let go of the past and sold the watches it was my way of letting go of the past I have to day I had a good time selling them it made me think man I can't wait to think of the adventures people well have with the watches I sold them and I hope they have just as much fun with the watches that I had with them it felt a little therapeutic.

You're amazing. Six watches for a trip and someone looking at them as a novitiate would be at a loss to explain the mini-collection, but to TGV there's always a rationale with threads that weave them all together. This is a great way to be a serious collector, because it's not the $$$ that joins them, it's your joy and discipline in building the collection such that all the pieces have something that links them to all the others, as different as they may be. Another fun video and I wish you and Omega and Bulova, et. al., a lot of happy days and success. In everything from the production to the editing you make videos that make it look easy, and you know that always means it isn't. I've learned so much and I enjoy your perspective and commentary every time a new video drops. You've given me a completely new take on how to think about timepieces, when before I was just rummaging around. Cheers!

Being a big Bulova fan, I have an Accutron II “Moonview” (96B204) with the three hand Precisionist movement. It is similar appearance to the original Astronaut, but with a fixed 12 hour bezel. The new Astronaut is too pricey for me, but I am a fan of the SW330-2 movement, which is used in my two most recent purchases, a Zelos Spearfish GMT and an Islander Republic GMT. My Glycine Airmans (Airmen?) use the similar, but shorter power reserve, movement that Glycine calls a GL293. Your reviews got me into Glycines. I particularly like my two DC-4s (Purist and GMT) which pay homage to the original Airman from the year of my birth.

Hi TGV, You asked if we had gone off certain watches. My answer is a definite yes and it is Rolex I owned several watches Datejusts, Day dates, sea Dwellers, and of course the ubiquitous Submariner. I just got fed up with the hype and the lack of stock in the AD's. and the general uncaring attitude of the Rolex Company. So now they are all gone and good riddance. I still own a JLC Reverso and an Ultra Thin. They are my only two grail watches, I do now buy unusual watches mostly vintage from the 50s to the 80s. Including boxed NOS Casio melody watches now fetching ridiculous prices on the collectors market. I also now collect vintage Favre Leuba watches I think I'm right in saying the second oldest watchmaker in history started in 1737 now there's horology history. Anyway, TGV keep up the good work maybe one day you can touch on Favre Leuba's history and innovations of which there have been plenty. Cheers and Beers Brian Pritchard Thornhill Scotland

TGV: I just purchased A Panerai PAM 1048, Luminor Marina, 40mm on a leather band and it is terrific! I'll send you a photo of it on my 175mm wrist if you tell me where to send it. Wait no more! The 40mm Panerai is out there! Go for it!

Well you have always liked Paul McCartney, then one day you wake up and you find out you like John Lennon instead. I guess it's the natural flow of things... only the dead stay still. I've always liked George Harrison, personally. 🤣

I applaud companies for re-issuing watches, BUT I wish they would be TRUE reissues. Imagine if they released this Bulova with the original 38mm size and tuning fork movement ? It would have been bigger than the moon swatch in the watch world. Unfortunately, this release is already being forgotten.

Good evening TGV! Great for us to ge some coverage of the Accutron Astronaut. It is a classic yet timeless design. Fitting in the cold war era as well as space travel beyond the boundaries of our solar system! Best regards!

My absolute dream would be to browse a large AD's inventory along with you TGV! I'm also really liking the direction Bulova has been going with Accutron. That Astronaut is 🔥🔥🔥

I love Bulova, and the Astronaut more particularly-- but if ever there were a watch that demanded to have a high accuracy quartz instead of an automatic, it would be this reissue. It should be much smaller, and the quartz would not only accommodate the smaller size, it is the more obvious historic successor to the tuning fork movement. As is, too big, and historically mismatched, alas. (The Astronaut was supposed to be about precision!!!!!)

If The Accutron Astronaut was only made 300 this year, they'll make more the folllowing year. Depends on the success.

Why does Bulova not use their Accutron sweeping quartz movement in regular dial watches? They'd make a killing.

Doesn’t matter how limited it is, no way it holds value. Like-new Aqua Terra’s are selling at $3.5k. I’ll eat a sock if I’m 2 years a used Bulova and a Used Omega are trading at the same price.

Wonderful video and looks like a great get together at Moyer’s!!!! I’ve ordered a couple of Squale watches from Moyer’s and there was one out of stock which they notified me via email, we were going back and forth via email and sorry I forgot who called me from there but was a pleasant phone call and he was very professional and made everything perfect!!!! Just superb customer service!!!! I’ve got a few Speedmasters and I don’t think I could ever let them go!!!! I would love a Panerai especially after a friend of mine showed me his last October, but I’m trying to take it slow!!!!

Loved this, what a fantastic city. Not sure about the Accutron, just a little too ‘pancake’ for me. As a ex owner of the Bulova moon watch I just wish they would scale down some of their models. I feel the new 43 is still way too big. Great show as ever, cheers 👍

I also sported my Rolex gmt and Daytona at Indy many moons ago… though I was there for work (I worked for an f1 team at the time ). Indy is a fascinating place, the drivers could walk unmolested downtown and we had a marvelous steak dinner at a table next to Mario Andretti. Good memories and … I also had some good Nikes for walking!

Great vid as usual. Cant see the value of the astronaut at that price if I’m honest. And your right its not the design or heritage but the movement. Maybe they should have used something from the citizen chronometer stable (1-2 sec accuracy per year) or certainly spent more on the movement supplied. JMHO

Bulova should have used their high accuracy quartz movement. It would have fit perfectly into the theme of this watch. And kept the price more affordable. What a shame.

Glad you had a great visit to Indianapolis and Moyer. My first Air Force assignment in the ‘70s was in Indiana and we all spent many memorable weekends in Indianapolis. With your love of history, if you visit there again I recommend visiting the former Fort Benjamin Harrison in NE Indianapolis - now a state park with a Museum of 20th Century Warfare. And of course, The Brickyard!

Glad to see you hanging out at Moyers. My wife & I got our wedding rings there & she was kind enough to get my Omega Planet Ocean there. Good choice on The Carmichael Hotel. We will be staying there again. Hopefully, you were able to hit some of the decent restaurants along the Monon as well as Yats over on Old Meridian St.
