Why I choose to retire in Spain & the down sides?
This was a question for me and I’ve added to it - Would I retire now?

I have very happily been living here in Spain for nearly 17 years now and can honestly say that I have Not regretted a single day in living in Spain. Of course there are some problems here but somehow things seem easier to resolve generally. One of the most important things to consider is "post-operative" care. Here in Spain like in many Mediterranean countries, it is the case where care of those recovering from operations or illness are cared for by their families, not so good for a single person and pensioner like me, with no family here. But "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof..."!! I think that a most important thing for foreigners considering moving here, especially "Brits" is to remember that you are moving to a foreign country, with it's own customs, laws and way of life. It Is NOT the "U.K" with Sunshine..!!

@ Very diplomatic of you. That sort of reply probably comes from a naturalised Brit, with whom you wouldn't want any socializacion and whose idioma you already know. 🤣 Keep up trying the language whenever you can. We were young enough on arrival in France to have plenty of hard drive space in our heads to convert school French into fluent French. We got C2 (mastery - me) and C1 (only 2 points lower - Mrs.) in our naturalisation exams because we always worked and socialised with French people (and a handful of Brits), and never together (different professions). Couples second language acquisition is such that one is always better than the other, who tends to rely on the other for letters, e-mails etc. Don't rest on your laurels though. Good luck 🤞🍀. (Avoid Aaaa J's mentalidad like the plague!). Try joining a Spanish club where the interest is a skill YOU have... could be anything.

You look so good and stress free. The air you breath , the sun you get , the food you eat , the health system you have , the walking with the dog you do ........ Everything is better for a pensioner or retired in Spain. As a spaniard i would encourage all the brittish who want to have a stress free life to come to Spain. Now it´s hard because of Brexit and covid but it is possible to take the residency card if you apply for that. I know many , many, EU citicens who had stablished and had children here. Good luck.

Now that Brexit has added another layer of difficulty to settling in Spain, British folks who would otherwise find the peace and contentment of life in southern Spain especially may never be able to do so to the detriment of all. This is what freedom is all about and how capricious governments can strip their own citizens of such privilege. Shaun, it's good that you have no regrets about choosing your present lifestyle. Happiness is not having to worry about tomorrow. Apparently, you don't.

@@colinesquire2480 Most British immigrants to Spain fail to learn even the basics of Spanish. My Spanish solicitor told me both she and her secretary could always tell the difference between Irish and British. How I enquired Well the British first words are always Good morning/afternoon, Their departing words being Thank you. The Irish, on the other hand, always say, Buenos Dias, and parting words Michael Gracias. So easy to learn Spanish especially in Restaurants. Look at menu in English, then go to same menu in Spanish and order in Spanish. It gets you more generous vaso vino. You know what vaso vino means, I assume

We rent for about 4 months a year and it keeps things simple. The exact location and orientation of your property is crucial . On the Costa del Sol if you buy just 5- 10 miles inland from the sea (usually because its much cheaper ) it can be much colder than the narrow coastal strip as the altitude and mountains combine to create microclimate and they hold the clouds over your head while just down the road at the same time the thin coastal strip is sunny and often 6 or 8 degrees warmer. This is crucial from November to April . Also if your garden or terrace is north facing thats a huge mistake to make when buying or even renting a property during the coolest 5 months. My advice is if you are planning to stay in the cooler months then buy a smaller place on the coast rather than a bigger place inland .

Hi Shaun, many thanks for sharing that. You really put it together and presented it well, interesting and really engaging. I was hoping your audience would enjoy it as much as I was sure to, which was a big part of why the question having thought it through myself quite deeply for a number of years already. Our circumstances are pretty similar in many ways. I will look forward to a face to face chat with you and the Jan’s (I have one as well) and share that detail at some stage. We were booked on a ferry on April 5th 2020 to come and buy a property in the Hondon Valley from a shortlist and explore a bit from a base there. You know what happened there, no ferries! Sure, lots has changed with Brexit and the new rules and we have some extra family commitments here in the U.K. which kinda makes it lucky we couldn’t make the move to be honest, but we will make the move at some stage once those commitments have eased. Money is dwindling (we sold our houses and have been renting expensively on the south coast for far too long) so our villa may turn out to be not quite so magnificent as yours but hey ho, we will have that weather and glorious outdoor lifestyle and the ability to get out and about - COVID permitting. Many thanks again, and I hope that this vid gets watched, thumbed and commented on lots. Keep safe Top Man! 👍

@kevtheargonut 3 жыл бұрын
@ Hi Shaun. I would have taken that risk too. Sadly at the time, I was in the process of losing half my pension and most of the house to my ex, so had some financial rebuilding to do late in life. Last year, Jan and I sold the houses, pocketed the little we were allowed by U.K. divorce courts and were ready to move. I was going to commute from Alicante to the U.K. one round trip for 3 days a week (cheaper and quicker than Port Solent to Manchester), work from Spain the other 2 and keep the U.K. job (and pension contributions) going. Plans were scuppered as COVID happened and that buying trip was binned, and now my mums and both older brothers health is failing keeping me very busy supporting her. But as I said, we will do it one day, I just hope I am still young and mentally aware enough to realise we actually have by that stage. 😁

There are umptee videos on retiring in Spain on KZbin ,however,I never seem to across any videos of older people that have settled in Senior Living Resorts and hear about their experiences in those resorts. Because of my age(76) I don’t believe that it would suit me buying real estate at this stage of my life,however,a SLR would be more appropriate. It would be of invaluable help to hear of those people that have chosen that path as to whether it was a good move or an immense regret.

Many Britishs are returning from Spain with skin cancer where they don't protect themselfs from the Spanish strong sun. Our NHS has to cure them.Spain is too dusty and hot.I lived in Spain for 20 years with the natives Spainish and heard them slagging of the British. So when you go on holiday you think all Spanish are nice people. They're not.

I've had a property there for 12 years and now thinking to move there, I retired early 2 years ago. the only thing that really puts me off is having to take driving test lol. Am safe driver but the thought of taking a test in Spanish is too daunting so will probably do six months every year. (2x 90 days) Also the taxes seem higher in Spain than the UK. Good video Thank you.

In my view the only downside is the difficulty with the language providing residency and driving licence is sorted . Buenos dias Shaun. Hope you’re all ok 👍🏻 Bonnie sounds happy 😃 Great video on your adventure too Spain 🇪🇸 Corinne and I have the same scenario as you. Both divorced and started again in 2007. Still got a large mortgage 🙄 But we do own our home in Sucina in the Murcia region not far from you Shaun. We’ve thought of selling up like you but we owe too much on our U.K. home. Corinne has had her retirement extended by 7 years 😩 Corinne should of retired this September at 60 with a final salary pension 50k lump sum plus £28,500 pension plus her state pension. Happy days but that’s all gone to shit.......🙄 Corinne will retire with me in 2023 and then this government gave me an extra year ..........🙈 Hopefully we’ll have a joint pension of 40k and 65k lump sum in 2023!! Our wedding is all in place for July the 20th and we’re hoping to come out to our Casa in Sucina. Then I’m doing a surprise trip in September for her 60th. We’re both hoping things will change about the movement of people in Europe by the time we both retire. Take care and hopefully we can meet up in the near future and get you a café con leche lol 😆 Cheers Stevie 😎 Oh it’s 4 degrees in Manchester today 🥶

Actually that’s just how it works. Once you advise the UK that you are a fiscal tax resident in Spain, your pension gets converted into euros at source (at the best rate) and is sent to your Spanish bank account or wherever you want it. You then pay tax on it in Spain thru your yearly declaration
