This is me. I did Accounting in high school and loved it. I knew I loved it because I had major depression in my freshmen high school year and it was the only thing that still made into my life and in college I took Principles of Accounting 1 and 2. I left it I do not know why..I felt lost.. and ended up getting a general studies degree mostly of paralegal classes and graduated. I transferred ,and I attempted engineering and Biology and had to struggle. I have the lowest GPA because I felt lack of applicability in terms of context and such. Accounting really is applicable, and it is real life related from the get go. I now read my sister’s accounting textbook ,and it is so fun. I have my Biology textbook, but I do not feel my heart pounding for it like when it comes to accounting. My sister received an Associates Degree in accounting and in 3 years she became the VP of a small business that is now growing . She does payroll, reconciliation, invoicing, w-2 stuff, and other things. I am 26 and I wish I could start it all over again. The people in accounting = more down to earth. (My opinion of course) Even classes seem like everyone eventually is a big team and has to figure things out together. I like that.

I was seriously depressed because I didn't know what was wrong with me at the time.I keep forcing myself to stay and that my interest will come in time and I am proud to say, I DO NOT like science, with no shame! Also, I started to go to school after working for a bank for 5 years because I was bored and wanted to do something else with my life. I majored in business. A customer casual asked me "Why dont you have a concentration in accounting?" and from there I said, "Ok, why not?" Seriously without thinking twice and on a whim, I was majoring in accounting. Currently in my accounting class my teacher was trying to convert me to be a marketing major because I was doing really well in class. If I do decide to switch I’m just scared of the math 😣 I’ve struggled in math all my life and my teacher was like all you need to know for accounting is to add, subtract, multiply and divide and most teachers let you use calculators.

Currently a pre-nursing major and the anatomy 1 class made me realize nursing is NOT for me. I'm really thinking about accounting but I'm scared that since I was ALWAYS horrible at math in high school, that I will suffer once again in accounting. Also scared that I wouldn't know how to do math things at work and would look dumb always asking for help... I still don't understand what a day consists of in accounting though... If you figure out the budgeting of a company what do you do the next day?
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
lizzymabo24 I was in the same boat! I’ve made a few videos on other accounting topics including a day in the life so make sure you check those out. To be honest, accounting involves little to no math. This is a huge misconception that people have. As long as you’re decent at Microsoft excel, you’ll be fine. As for what accountants do on a daily basis, that kind of depends what industry you decide to choose. Usually people chose between public (accounting firms- auditing or tax) or private (working as an accountant for a company). I work for a private company and my duties include entering quarterly reports, balancing the general ledger, reconciling foreign currency, and a bunch of other miscellaneous tasks. All of this you will either learn in school or your job will teach you (since some things are specific to the company). Hope that answers your questions! And make sure to check out some of my other accounting videos for more details!!

Dont get me wrong, I admire the work Nurses do, it's a rewarding job. I regret not paying attention in high school, well I did but I grew up in a stressful household. No communication, parents not getting along, constant arguing. j was quiet and afraid in school....so I was always so lost growing up. This was a great video, thanks for sharing! :) Hopefully I will find that career In what I am looking for.

This helped a lot! I’m considering accounting, I am currently in the medical field as a medical assistant, and medical stuff has always interested me so that’s what I went for, but I knew I did not want to be a nurse, I went to sonography because I thought the baby ultrasounds would be cool, but in order to get into that program where I live you need medical and college experience so they told me to go be a medical assistant. I’ve worked here for 8 months and I’ve realized it is not for me! I don’t enjoy the patient interaction as I am a naturally shy person, the fast pace is fine I don’t fall behind, but the fact that I’m never working on one thing, it’s 150 patients a day, is annoying. I’d so much rather be at a desk and work (Which I never thought I’d say.) I enjoy talking with co workers and having that relationship. Also, I feel as if I do not accomplish anything during the day and my job is pointless, and the pay is not enough to make a living off of. I also know I do not want to be a nurse, and I don’t want to be anything else in the medical field (not interested in anything else). And I definitely can not handle having someone’s life in my hands or having to diagnose anyone, aka nurse or sonography. I’ve been doing a lot of research about accounting, but I’m worried because a lot of people say they hate their accounting jobs, but I took an accounting class in high school, same way you did, and it clicked and I loved it, it felt like it came easy. So I feel like I might be good at it? I’m just nervous to go back to school and try something new

I'm thinking to switch from business to accounting. My long term goal is to be a business owner, but I like how accounting will assure me a career out of college, so I can save for my long term goal. I'm worried it will be boring and lonely. On the other hand, I love working and being alone, I love maximizing efficiently in all aspects of my life which makes me love numbers and budgeting. I guess my main grip is I'll be woking for and under business owners doing the grunt work, when I want to grow to reach the position they are at. I don't think of accountants as dreamers, inventors or risk takers like entrepreneurs so maybe it will be the wrong enviroment for me.
@SaraMarie6 жыл бұрын
I think many people stereotype accountants and believe they lack creativity and the desire to own a company. How well you do in accounting and what you accomplish is all based off what your goals are not what your major in college is. I know many accountants who started as accountants to get an idea of how to manage a company’s finances then moved on to own their own company.

Hi, I'm just about to finish my second year of community college, majoring in Business Administration, and will transfer to a 4-year university this fall to further pursue accounting. So far I've only taken two accounting classes, but everything I've learned has just clicked with me, and have been able to manage an A in both classes. Like you, I didn't gravitate towards science or anything in the medical field (took anatomy in high school, HATED IT). Now that I'm going to be a junior next fall, I wanted to ask when is a good time to start internships? During my junior or senior year? During the summer? Also, I been thinking that private accounting is more up my alley (public accounting seems too hectic for my laidback attitude lol), is it still recommended to get a CPA even when you're not in public accouting? Not like mandatory or anything? Thanks, and really loved your video!
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
Hi Brianna! This is EXACTLY why I wanted to make this video.. to help students who have questions so I'm so glad you asked! In my experience, you would look for a summer internship in the Fall of your junior year. Most universities have two career/internship fairs (fall & spring) so I would highly suggest you go to the fall one. Most companies who offer internships want you to be a junior that way you have intermediate accounting and some tax/audit under your belt. From what I've seen, you would intern with a company the summer before your senior year and if they are happy with you they'll either offer you another internship (if you're going straight to get your masters) or they'll offer you a job. The CPA is definitely not a requirement for all private companies but I think it's still encouraged. Some companies will hire you and then help you get your CPA if that's your plan. That's what my company did. Let me know if you have any other questions! And if you haven't already, subscribe to my channel! :)

Do the formats/concepts and doing the adjustments for financial statements differ in the United States and the UK?
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming in the UK they use IFRS? But I'm not super familiar with UK accounting so I'm not sure.
@peerreviewed7 жыл бұрын
Sara Marie All listed companies have to use IFRS (as in the rest of the EU), but non-listed firms can choose between IFRS and UK GAAP 😊

I’m currently in the military. I will retire in 3.5 years. I started my degree in accounting. I’ve been debating back and fourth. This was great insight. Would love another video on characteristics of an accountant. Good qualities that an accountant shall possess. For what i understand good math skills (scares me a bit because I’m not great at complicated math), organization and attention to details are other skills that are necessary in this field (which I’m great at). would you be so kind and talk about this in another video... thanks!

I have a few other accounting videos that you should check out. A lot of the Q&A's have questions about personalities and the math involved in accounting. Good luck!!

Out of private and public accounting which is the one with the most stress? I heard one was more stressful than the other, but I forgot which one.

Honestly I think it depends on the company. In my experience, both can be stressful depending on the time of year and your boss...

I just graduated from college last year in June with a BS in microbiology. I honestly hated it. The entire 4 years was awful and I wish I had done a different major but my parents would have killed me if I had switched. Now almost a year after graduating I’m still looking for a job in a field I have no interest in. So this bring me to the point of me commenting - I’m interested in going into accounting as a non-accounting major. How do you suggest I go into this field? Since I haven’t taken a single accounting course I’ve been told I can get a certificate in accounting and then take the CPA exam. Or I can apply for a masters in accounting and then take the CPA exam as well. I also don’t have any accounting experience whatsoever so I have no idea what to do.

Hi there! I'm 24 with a BA in Advertising Account Management, currently with a part-time pharmaceutical market research job, as full-time work hasn't been an easy thing for me to come by. I'm re-thinking on going back to school and I have a few friends and family who are involved in Accounting. They love it, the pay is great, the companies they work for are great. I'm considering going back to school for this, but I'd prefer to try to take the online route for a degree if I can find a good program, as I've done well with online courses before. Now the question is.. how do I know if I like it before I dive fully into it? What do you suggest I should do in order to "get my feet wet"?
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
That's exciting! My sister is currently going to school for accounting and she's doing it exclusively online. She enjoys it and it's really flexible. I would suggest finding someone to shadow for a day or two. There are many different positions you could do as an accountant so I would try to find people to shadow who work in the area you're interested in. Unfortunately, my experience has been that most companies want you to have a couple classes under your belt before they offer you an internship. I was 100% certain I wanted to do auditing and then I had a summer internship doing auditing and within a week I knew I hated it. Hope that helps!

This is really helpful! I’m quite concern if it is highly recommended to take up accounting in high school for further accounting studies in college? In my case, I was not able to take up accounting in high school since it was only available through correspondence school. But I am really keen on taking up a bachelors degree in accountancy but also quite hesitant since I don’t know what to expect?? Back in high school I took up related subjects such as Economics, History and Statistics

Many people don't take accounting in high school. I personally wouldn't worry about it.

I have a question When you said accounting is hard, can you explain what is hard about accounting? Please give me examples; Im thinking to major in accounting as I do research on what to major something always leads me back to accounting or finance. Also, how much math do you do, what are the exiting things about being an accountant? Do you have any information about property accounting? Just trying to put everything together I apologize for asking so many questions
@CPACareerPaths4 жыл бұрын
It depends what you do in accounting to answer all your questions. For example: if you do tax, it could be hard when you have to keep yourself updated with all new laws and regulations all the time. If you do audit, it could be hard when you have to travel all the time to meet the clients. We have excel, and calculators to do math, so you don’t have to worry too much about doing a lot of math in accounting. Exciting things about accounting for me as an auditor are to do all different testings on financial statements, to communicate with all different people, to travel to all different places to meet clients, etc.

Hello, I am very interested in accounting, but I have only held an accounts receivable/payable job so far. I don't know if I want to go to school to get an accounting degree. I love doing bookkeeping type work. I have a question. How does being an "accountant" differ from doing "accounts receivable" or "accounts payable". Do you have people in your company who do the "grunt work", and then your job is to analyze the data. A bit confused about that. I guess in small companies you might do all the bookkeeping and all the analyzing yourself, and maybe in big companies they have several people to each do one specialized task?

Hi Sara, thanks for sharing your experience and advise. I am 53 and have a plan to get AAT to change my career. I have little background of IT(web design which was simple HTML job) and hospitality industry, am learning Excel at the moment. Could you give me an advice that I could get a accounting/book keeping job when I get AAT? One more thing I am in England and English is my second language. Your advice would be much appreciated for me. Thanks again.

I’ve just found your channel. I’m currently getting my MAcc in a two semester intense program that is also using Becker to prepare us to sit for all 4 parts of the CPA while in the program. It’s a lot. It’s so overwhelming and I’ve been really scared that if I don’t obtain my CPA license that I’ll never make good money in accounting. What is your opinion on this?

Hi. I know this is a bit late, but I just found your channel and I am thinking about a accounting course. I am very stressed and concern will I be able to work as an accountant, maybe it is too hard for me. I know there ar other jobs, like payroll and bookeeping. Is that more easy and if get certificate in payroll, would I be able to find the job? English is not my first language and this is my another concern, will I be able to work in office with my not perfect English. Oh just really lost. By the way, I like your videos, they are helpful and very informative.

Honestly I couldn’t tell you if you could find a job or not. In my experience, finding a job was very easy. But I also had a bachelors degree and internship experience. All I can say though is if you find the right company those things shouldn’t matter. My company has been very supportive of my dreams and have done whatever they can to help me accomplish what I’m working toward. Good luck!!

Hi Sara, first of all, thank you so much for the videos! I have always had an eye for accounting but I haven't been in school in four years but I am finally finishing up at my local community college and decided to go for my bachelor's degree and transfer to a University instead of getting my associates. I am transferring in the fall, I will be a junior, should I apply for an internship even though it has been so long since I've had those classes?

Sara, I have been thinking about going to school for accounting. Would you recommend an accounting degree or a business administration degree? Thanks!
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would go for accounting. I've heard it's harder to get a bachelors degree in business since you're really not specializing in anything. I majored in accounting in my bachelors degree and now am getting my MBA and I feel like that would be the way to go. Hope that helps!
@discodave50167 жыл бұрын
I'm in Illinois too! Do you have to get an MBA to sit for the CPA or is it possible to get it done while getting your bachelor's?
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
Cool! You don't have to get an MBA but you do need 150 credit hours. I've seen people get the extra 30 hours a couple of different ways - 1) Masters degree (in accounting or MBA) 2) Double Major (usually finance) 3) Take extra accounting classes during bachelors degree. Hope that answers your question!
@discodave50167 жыл бұрын
Sara Marie thanks! I have a buddy who's an accountant and he recommended that I double major. So I guess it something to look into.

I have a question. Same for me. I thought I would like Science. Because I really love animals. Thought about becoming a veterinarian or zoologist but I took biology classes and it was always hard for me. I was sad that even if I want to pursue it, I can't bring myself to remember names of things. I hated reading. Hated chemistry and physics. I tried telling myself that I just have to study it then I can do what I want to do. Then I thought if I can't really study this how can I get the point where I want to reach. After that I took some math classes some calc and pre calc and really made me want to take more classes. So my question is that if you really like math accounting is a good major? When i took these math classes that led me to computer science and it wasn't what I imagined it to be and it was really hard and I didn't want to continue anymore I feel like it is not interesting and it made me feel something is wrong with me. I heard it from my co worker that I should try thinking about accounting and I'm kind of afraid what if will disappoint me too! So I wanted to ask. Is this would be something if you like math.

I need some advice from someone. I finally graduated with my bachelors after 18 years and graduated with a bachelors in science in agriculture business. I took miscellaneous business admin courses over the years but just fun electives. I took financial accounting in the fall and passed and liked it. I am currently taking accounting classes and am enjoying them and hopefully want to try to get my cpa license in the next year or so. However, even if i earned my CPA here in California would i be able to qualify for education requirements out of state?

Just want to say thank you so much for posting this and explaining your journey because I am still currently pre med and I am having the exact feeling you talked about in your anatomy class. The more science classes I take, the more I am just annoyed and frustrated and feeling like I am doing the wrong thing. Hey Sara I'm so glad I found this video it has helped tremulously! Unfortunately I do not know any accountants, so is there any way I could run a few things by you as I am very anxious about starting this subject although I hope I will love it. Basically I live in England and did A levels (pre uni courses) in maths physics history and IT. Maths was by far my favourite, with history in second. I have just failed my first year of robotic engineering at uni. I hated it engineering is an insane workload and the only thing I was ever doing was studying, usually in the lab til 3am most nights and having no time to enjoy uni. I could get on with the maths but the electronics I hated and the programming was only a little better. My heart was not really in it, plus my course mates fit every stereotype of being very smart but unhygienic rude and socially abnormal nerd types (most not all). This is part one sorry for the essay haha
@ryanwinchy7 жыл бұрын
Part two: I have now decided to change degree to accounting and finance BA. I am just a bit apprehensive because it is not something I have ever studied as high schools aren't as good over here and we did not have any such course. In robotics everyone else already knew everything on the degree, I hope this isn't like that and I have a chance of keeping up. Is there actually much advanced maths involved? Because if so I might have a but of an advantage in that area having studied it at high level. Also, is there much writing involved? As I read a lot and enjoy writing. Everyone tells me it is extremely boring, but I don't think it will be it see,s very interesting. Those who don't get on well with maths say that's boring so probably the same thing. I love business and sell on Amazon as well. If degree goes to plan I'm planning on living in USA for at least a few years. Have you ever traded stocks and such? Thanks soooo much for any help, and sorry for the absolute essay!
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! To be honest accounting has very little math. The highest math required is calculus and you really don't even need that. Most people assume you must be good at math to be an accountant but that's really just a stereotype. The majority of my day is spent in excel spreadsheets and any calculations I need to do can be done using a formula. As for stock trading, I have not. Stocking trading is usually handled by the finance department and at my company we have an outside company handle our investments. Hope that all makes sense! And feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

I’m going to major in accounting and how well do you have to be good in math? I’m average when it comes to math, I don’t fall behind nor do I excel. However, I like it because it’s challenging but sometimes I don’t do so well. My question do you really have to excel in math to get this degree?
@SaraMarie7 жыл бұрын
Pablo Martinez not at all! Accounting is very basic math! And to be honest the majority of the "math" is done in excel. This is a very common myth- that you have to be good at math to be an accountant. Hope that helps!
