Well I was seriously considering either the Honda or Yamaho, but you just sold me on the KLX. I live in lower altitudes but live right next to the Sierras. Fuel injection is very important to me. While I'm not looking for something to go tear up the trails like a crazy person, having issues from extreme altitude changes and air temps is something I would prefer not to have to seal with anymore. So thanks for the tips! Kawasaki it is! Bob in Reno (now)

Just saw this. Thanks for supporting! I bet there are some awesome off road trails down there! The bike handles hills well. With the big bore I don't even have to downshift. With the bike uncorked, I could just downshift if I needed to pass someone. On the highway, it will cruise in stock form up to 65 MPH pretty comfortably. At that speed you still have some power to pass and the wind isn't too bad

Congrats on the bike. I bought a used 2015 wr250r since new is pretty expensive. I'm considering trading to the crf250l since it's got a lower seat height. I'm only 5'7" 130ish and I drop the wr250r quite a bit on technical trails. I feel like I could ride the crf250l more aggressively.

A lower seat height and center of gravity is definitely confidence inspiring. The CRF might have some more low end for those technical trails too
@RidersInBlack
@RidersInBlack 4 жыл бұрын
The CRF250L has a seat height of just over 34 in. The WR is insane at over 37 in. The problem with the CRF, is the rear suspension is extremely soft and rebound is poor on more technical trails. You'll have to install a rear suspension upgrade to stiffen it a bit and it would solve the problem

Almost pulled the trigger on a new KLX 250. I found a 4th hand KLR 250 from 1993 for a really good price. As I am just learning to ride glad I didn't go with a new KLX 250 as I put the KLR down 3 times, broke ribs on the 2nd fall and broke ribs on the other side of my body on the 3rd fall. Once I master the KLR I will move up to a new KLX. I think both the the KLR & KLX are bulletproof bikes though, built like tanks.

@eljuano28

Of course I have an opinion about everything, so, ... Nothing wrong with any of them. There really aren't any really terrible dual-sports out now days. Ignoring the very expensive, (to buy and also to maintain,) Euro-bikes and the bigger Jap-bikes, the 250 niche market is not going away any time soon and maybe that's because it's not so simple to break down the purpose of the niche. My general thoughts are they can all do mostly the same things, but they target so many different missions that each have advantages and disadvantages depending on the needs of the rider. I think the WR is perfect for the more dirt-ripping rider. The CRF is the mini-adventurer of the group, (especially the Rally.) The XT is the bike that is still going to work after Armageddon and gets anywhere slowly, but gets anywhere. Finally, the KLX is the best battle-bike, meaning it's the best at doing it all, even if it's not the best at any one thing in particular. (I'm pretty biased in favor of it exactly because it's a jack of all trades.) The DRZ is the closest Suzuki gets to a 250, I guess, and it's a good bike, but even with the mods that you've done so far, realistically, there isn't a lot the DRZ can do that the KLX can't and there's still a lot more potential. Actually, that's kind of the greatest advantage of the 250 dp class; you get the one that best suits what you need, then you tailor it to improve or specialize as you go. That little bit of added weight on the CRF and the street origins of it's motor make it awfully comfortable as a longer distance road bike when at least half that road is dirt, but it can be made into an even better, more comfortable and competent road & dirt adventure bike with simple, inexpensive mods all the way up to mounting fairings, hard-bags, major suspension changes and even a 305 kit for the motor. It's all up to money and desire. The WR is so close to a pure dirtbike with plates that it's not a big stretch to dial it in and make it just that. I wouldn't want to spend much time on the road, and carrying more than a short weekend's worth of camping gear might become more a hassle than it's worth, plus that defeats the advantages of the bike more focused on tearing it up. The XT, ... dude, I seriously might need to put one in a discreet bugout stash in case the tinfoil hat wearing, SHTF, WWROL prepper types end up being right. What a little tank, and you really only need a bash plate and some handguards: but I couldn't live with it in the real world of 70+ mph traffic and wanting to go tear it up once in awhile. It's just not that bike for me. The KLX is all compromise, but it's been around forever and the aftermarket let's you make it a great little ripper, a completely capable adventurer, an amazing hunting/camping bike or just leave it alone(-ish) and run into town for groceries. It's got it all and can compete in every mission, ...but it's not the CRF for over the road, it's not the WR for gettin' it, and it's not the XT for role-playing as a mountain goat. It's just the one that will be right there with each of the others no matter what the mission. Y'know?

You hit a lot of great points, that I didn't cover or didn't know/think about; so thank you for that! Like you said, they all kind of do the same thing, but each one has their own niche. If you already have the WR already, I would stick with it. I wouldn't see a reason to upgrade from one to another if you already have one. Both platforms have a great aftermarket and can achieve the same power levels with the mods available for them.

Did you look at the XT250? If so, what knocked it out? I’m looking at the 2020 KLX250 and XT250. For now, the XT250 is in the led. Still need to test ride both bikes
@jhmotorclub6916
@jhmotorclub6916 4 жыл бұрын
I did. I feel like the XT250 is in a different class of dual sport. In my opinion, it is in the class of the DR200S. Those bikes have less power than the KLX, WR, CRF, etc. meaning a top speed of only around 75ish. It weighs the same too. It may feel lighter because it is lower however. It is still air cooled and has less suspension travel. I'm sure it is great off road, but for any type of highway or prolonged street use, it may feel overwhelming unless you are in the city doing slower speeds. Test ride them and see what you think. If you are dead set on the XT, go for it. However, those are the main things why I didn't choose it. I'm loving the KLX with the 351 now!

At first, mine did not sit up as high. Then, I set the correct sag/preload for the rear suspension and it sits much higher. I'm about 5'10"/5'11" and I barely touch the balls of my feet now. I used to almost be able to flat foot it. If I remember correctly, when I rode the WR, it felt like my knees where higher than on the KLX.

I know the great craftsmanship from Kawasaki - I've a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT edition ABS, and I absolutely LOVE the bike , looks and performance. I'm toying with the idea of the KLX (after all, one needs to spend the stimulus check on SOMETHING, no?) - but I'm having a bit of a time justifying it, as there are no trails/dirt roads near where I reside. So what would I gain? Please advise if there is something I'm missing... Kawasaki Kid (Yeah, right, "Kid" at age 75. - go figure)

Static money does no good lol! While there are some gravel roads and stuff around me, most of my riding within half an hour is street riding. The Ninja 400 sounds really fun. It's like pushing a slow car, fast. It is the same concept with the KLX. The benefit to the KLX in my opinion is the ability to not limit yourself to the roads. If you see a curb, you can run into it and hop over it. You can rip some berms on dirt/grass patches on the side of the roads. The bike is real agile and is just a hooligan machine. The bike is a little more upright than the Ninja too, which is a little easier on the shoulders and arms.

The WR starts off at 24 WHP. Uncorked they're right around 27 WHP. The KLX starts out with a measly 18 WHP. Uncorked the KLX produces around 25 WHP, possibly more with the cam mod. 3 WHP gain vs. 7 WHP gain. I'm not going to get into an argument over numbers because the rider is more important than what a sheet of paper says. I loved the review but had to nitpick a few things. A new KTM/Husky 250 is NOT even close to 7k. You're looking at 9-11k before taxes for a street-legal example. Considering the deal and price you got on the KLX, it was definitely the superior choice as to what you're looking for. MSRP between the KLX and WRR isn't far fetched as the WRR definitely is more off-road worthy with better suspension, more power, etc. (but yes, by the time I have mine set up the way I want it....I could buy a new KTM...) however many don't realize that the WRR is popular for its maintenance intervals and reliability unlike *cough cough* the KTM/Husky twins.

When I was looking for my KLX, my dealer had both the KTM/Husqvarna 250s for $7,299. So, I guess they were steals then. Maybe that's why I got a good deal on my KLX too. You nailed it on the maintenance idea. It just seems like the KTMs/Huskys need more attention in that area.

The KTM/Husky bikes are fantastic but so are the servicing and price of parts. They're road-legal race bikes that need servicing by the hour rather than mileage. Totally impractical for guys like me that will only ride now and then and with no desire to race. The CRF is good but the KLX suspension is more adjustable and feels more planted. It's a real dual-sport, whereas the Honda always feels like a road bike with knobblies on it.

@@TheDeerhunter42 Yea, I've heard that. It all depends on the rider and your gear to be honest. A good helmet and ear plugs for longer highway stints helps a lot. At this point, I have to come realize is that it all boils down to the rider in terms of performance for the 250s. A couple of my friends have uncorked WR's and I kept up fine with them with my uncorked KLX. The numbers say one thing, but when on the bike, you really just notice where the power comes on the bikes. I think the KLX is a better deal price wise. Sometimes, the Yamahas demand a premium. It comes stock with 2 advance profiles, but you can hook it up to a computer and plot any advance curve that you want, change red line cutoff, and a few other nice ignition tricks. The 2 basic settings are USA total advance with a faster curve, and Australia faster advance with more total advance. (as per stock Aussie bikes) Found it: parayelectro.com/products/CDI/default.html

@@barking.dog.productions1777 Unfortunately, I don't think that it will work for the EFI KLX. It would be great if there could be a module to advance the timing for the EFI bikes, but I have not heard of one.

@@jhmotorclub6916 I was trying to find my direct contact info for the company, but no luck so far. If you contact them directly they may be working on a unit for the newer bikes. Often these companies can use some volunteers with the equipment to help them dial in a new product. You can contact them via Ebay messaging and ask, but Ebay tries to block out any exchange of direct email addresses since it cuts them out of the money pie.

the 5 valve yz250f... if power is needed, tuned up it can do 47hp, a 280-310 boar kit and a methanol injector behind the air filter... no reason to get a 450cc.

I was leaning to the KLX, but the KLX was more money than the CRS, but the fit and finish was not near the quality of the Honda. The Yamaha was just too expensive for a 250cc bike IMHO. The Honda can drop 30-40lbs simply by taking off the rear tail lite and the exhaust. While the KLX does have adjstible suspension over the CRS, but from my experience (40+ years), it's more about the rider than the bike. This is why they make different bikes for different folks. For me, the CRS 250L was the right choice.

The fit and finish is real nice on the Yamaha and Honda. I agree with your opinion on the Yamaha. I was wondering how much weight could be shed from the Honda. Now I know. That is the thing I have come to realize over my time with the KLX. The rider is everything, whether it be for doing wheelies, trail riding, racing, etc. So, like you said, different bikes for different people

I disagree with your opinion of the drz, drz is more of a dual sport than the klx, just as good off-road really(80% rider 20%) bike, but the drz is better on road than the klx. honestly if we think in the mindset of buying used we all can get whichever bike we dream of, with a bit of work, next thing you know value for money gets a lot more efficient

I see what you're saying. The DRZ is definitely better on road, and know that people like the DRZ offroad too. I mainly thought of the SM model when I made this... whoops. Used bikes are also a lot better in terms of bang for the buck 👍

why do they have such small tanks on them? that's a pathetic range imo. yes i know you can buy after market tanks but why they dont come with bigger capacity tanks is beyond me. if i took this bike from home thru the national parks to the next town over the border, it wouldnt make it, or if it did it would literally be running on fumes. id have to ride straight thru to even have a hope of making it let alone camping over night and exploring the parks then getting to another fuel station. pathetic imo. my only complaint about the 250 dualsport bikes. absolute pathetic fuel range from factory. no choice but to buy after market tanks.

I owner Wr250X, sold it and few year later bought KLX250s. Oh boy was i disappointed! Now a days i am back to WR and couldn't be any happier. Yes, KLX is cheaper, it it/s price perfectly reflects how much less fun one will be having.

those KTM and husqvarna bikes are too much for just a dirt bike/dual sport bike for me id rather save money and buy a cheaper lower cc first bike then spend 10k -12k on a nicer sports bike later down the road after I learned how to drive a smaller bike but thats just me

They are a lot of money. However, the price is not bad considering a fully race prepped dirt bike can be 10K. If it is your first bike, then 10K is a lot for a bike that will most definitely get thrown around a bit
