I lived in Germany through the entire 90s and so was only vaguely aware of Dawkins, some Christian friends of mine in the UK would tell me some things about him and it all seemed a bit scary. Then I returned to the UK in the mid noughties and heard an interview with Dawkins on the radio. I remember thinking "Is this really THE Richard Dawkins that everyone has been so upset about"? The arguments he was putting forward in the interview were almost childish really, definitely an "Emperor has no clothes on" moment. I think he only got away with it for so long because so many people were desperate to believe him.

Years ago my church was packed on the night they showed a video of William Lane Craig debating Dawkins. Craig put Dawkins under the table. (,but not in a mean way). The bible says that all know that God exists, but not all of them want to fellowship with Him for eternity. This whole system was made for those who WANT SO MUCH to live with Jesus Christ, in His magnificent kingdom for eternity. Still, we feel for the Dawkins' of the world, who hate God and reject fellowship with Him. Paul talks about this in Romans and other places, regarding election of the saints. It sounds cruel in ways, but it's really justice of God that condemns unrighteousness, and rewards those who have been IMPUTED with the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, AND we have eternal life added to that! .

@@jonathanskeet5076 - Q#1) Absolutely yes. Of course, that is hardly the only thing that Jesus said, concerning God's word on His plan for salvation & eternal life for human- kind. God's plan of salvation involves God's reaching out to us with His OFFER of eternal life & forgiveness of sins. God's offer, like any offer, requires a response from whosoever seeks the benefits of His provision, as what you state in Q#1. More on the subject of God's provision for humankind, which includes the inseparable need for positive human response to His offer, as found in John 3:15-19. Q#2) Absolutely yes, as stated in Scripture. Of course, there are basic truths, which involve learning the exclusive manner of how ALL sinners can be saved, by receiving forgiveness for their sins & eternal life, through faith alone in Jesus Christ's provision of same, which is the everlasting, permanent Grace Gift of God. Only then, as a baby believer, can one begin to seek the "deep things (advanced knowledge of truth) of God", which involves a lifetime of study, which results in good works, but which works relate to eternal reward, & NOT salvation @ the believer's judgement -1Cor. 3:11-15). .

Please tell us what evidence you found against the "nonsense spread by these Atheists". The fundamental position of Atheism is that Theists have not met their burden of proof for their god - which is to say that you don't have verifiable evidence that exclusively leads to the one conclusion that God exists. Same, more or less. I thought I might be an atheist at one point. A friend recommended I read some Hitchens and Dawkins. I read "God is Not Great" and "The Selfish Gene" - and I realized that I thought both men were full of nonsense. I love what William Lane Craig's wife said to him - don't become a Christian if you don't plan to give your entire life to Him. Following Jesus really is a radical change! It can be really hard at times, it's not as if everything suddenly becomes great and you cease to have problems. You just have a new set of problems that you were unaware even existed in regard to 'fighting the flesh' and such. But becoming aware of who God is, understanding you are no longer alone in the world, the new sense of meaning, the beauty all around you, the love that often brings you to tears when you sense His presence and so much more. What's completely normal unfortunately, is for a "cultural christian" to ditch their beliefs at the nearest moment that it becomes convenient to do so - and that generally means through education. Frustratingly, but also very telling, is that they just need a passable theory of reasoning. Intense scrutiny is not the goal, merely distance from God. Christianity is not in our blood. As fallen creatures, God's message is alien to us; with this in mind, the title is fairly accurate.

Some people think that religion can be a positive thing and can help people have a sense of purpose and community. Richard Dawkins in interview with “Cosmic Skeptic” admitted that “He has never studied nor read the Bible nor plans to because it’s false and a waste of time.” How can something be false and therefore you refuse to learn anything about it to determine if it is false, that’s circular reasoning. That doesn’t sound like someone qualified to write a book about God not being logical. If you write a book without even studying the subject you are claiming to be false. That sounds very illogical. Christopher Hitchens is famous for saying “you nor I are physicists so you nor I are not qualified to talk on this subject nor give opinion.” By this logic Hitchens is not qualified to debate Christians because he doesn’t hold a degree in Christian theology, of course that’s absurd. He has every right to debate, because you can defer to authorities who have studied. But he can’t have it both ways, he can’t avoid science saying he doesn’t hold a degree so refuses to talk on it. But equally doesn’t hold a degree on what he is talking about. (Out of all of the new atheists or four horseman they hold 0 degrees in Christian theology or any Christian degree of any kind. So by their own logic they shouldn’t be writing these books.)

@@Fubizz12345 It is true that Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, along with other "New Atheists," do not hold degrees in Christian theology. However, this does not mean they are not qualified to write about the topic. The four horsemen, as they are sometimes called, are known for their critical views on religion and their arguments are based on philosophy, science, and critical thinking. It is also true that circular reasoning is not a sound argumentative technique. However, it is important to note that one person's refusal to study or read a certain text does not necessarily mean they are using circular reasoning. In the case of Dawkins, he has written many books and articles on religion, and his arguments are based on scientific evidence and reasoning. Ultimately, whether or not someone is qualified to write about a certain topic is a matter of interpretation. However, it is always important to consider the sources and evidence used in any argument and to be critical of any circular reasoning.

Hi there! I love that you have the open mindedness to think about this subject and the life decisions that come with it. I have a (relatively) simplified syllogism + factually verifiable basis that is very good evidence for specifically Christianity. 1. Christianity is based on the belief that Jesus was (and continues to be) God, and he died and rose from the dead as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. 2. We have eyewitness testimony that Jesus did indeed perform miracles, claim to be God, and even go so far as to rise from the dead. 3. If 2 is true, then at least the basics of Christianity are true and worth following. A reasonable follow up considers the "eyewitness testimony" mentioned in 2. You may ask questions like "How do we know it is still accurate? How do we know the eyewitnesses didn't lie? How do we know the eyewitnesses were not deceived? How do we know they were even eyewitnesses?" Q1) We have extremely old manuscripts of the New Testament. In fact, we have a good few. We have manuscripts of varying age from all over the world. They are handwritten and transcribed over and over again. If people had made changes over time, these manuscripts would be wildly different from one another. But they're not--they have minor grammar or spelling errors, but not much else. They've been dutifully preserved. Q2) The eyewitnesses, the disciples of Jesus such as Matthew and Peter, had no motivation to lie. They faced immense hardships throughout their lives as a direct result of their incessant proclamations that Jesus is Lord and rose from the dead. Peter was crucified for his beliefs. The early believers were not given money, nor food, nor clothes, nor comfort for their beliefs. They had to reason to lie. Q3) The Gospels (eyewitness testimonies I refer to) all tell the same story. They have different idiosyncrasies and clearly explain Jesus' life from different perspectives, but they aren't contradictory. It is impossible that every disciple was deceived exactly into believing the same story. They couldn't have all hallucinated the same thing either (that's not how hallucinations work). Q4) Simple answer. The Gospels have many details that both line up with one another and show that the people writing them were actually in the places they claimed to be. Later on, archaeology and immense research continued to show that these details were as accurate as they were abundant. So we have 1) accurate, 2) honest, 3) undeceived, and 4) eyewitness testimony that the person claiming to be God did all that he claimed to be and fulfilled many extremely specific prophies from thousands of years before his time. There are MANY questions to be asked here, and I understand if you are not completely convinced by this evidence, but this at least partly explains why people make "the jump."

I am a Christian who is NOT what I think you mean by creationist. I think, but could be wrong, you're referring to young earth creationism, which includes biblical literalism/fundamentalism. I do not think this "creationism" should be taught in high school science classes because, like the first five books of the Bible (i.e. the Torah) it is not, nor was it ever intended to be, science; nor does it include scientific descriptions. No need to rehash this tired old argument here. Your comment was interesting to me because of your reference to Satanism. I get the point you're going for, truly; but I don't think it works because orthodox Christianity is not a dualistic religion, like Zoroastrianism. Satan is not posited as the opposite to God. If anything, he would be opposite to the arch angel Michael. It's probably moot, because I agree that only science should be taught in science classes (crazy, right? Lol) but if you were to suggest another religious teaching, I would posit one with an independent creation story and god character (or gods). Maybe Hinduism? As a Christian, I would agree with you that if ...IF religious texts were to be introduced in high school biology classes, for example, then the Hindu Vedas (sp?) would need to be given equal time, assuming the presence of Hindu students. But hey, Mormons have a very different creation story; so that's even better for your point I think, since there are obviously plenty of Mormon students all over the US and the world for that matter. First of all, thank you for your story, Peter, if i may call you that. I haven't been actively searching for "atheist to christian conversion story," but I get enough theology stuff in my algorithm that I will occasionally get one in my suggested videos. I've been watching some of them lately. What I'm looking for is A) what's your backstory (especially if christian->atheist->christian), B) what convinced you christianity is true, and C) do you think you have a compelling reason that other atheists should believe. The story you have here covered this in greater detail than most, and was quite interesting. If your reason for converting were simply "I read William Lane Craig and found his arguments to be compelling," then you and I could respectfully disagree. If we had the opportunity, perhaps you could say why you found any given argument compelling, and I could agree or disagree, and offer how i felt about that or other arguments. Perhaps a great time could be had by all, even if we left still on different pages. My concern is that the argument you present here, repeatedly and proudly, and even in the video title, is that Dawkins somehow had something to do with this. Dawkins is wrong, therefore christianity is true? I know that's not the precise argument you're offering, but it's pretty close to what you're insinuating. I can't comment much on Dawkins in particular. I became an atheist 18 years before "The God Delusion" was published, and I wasn't interested in the subject at all when the Four Horsemen were at their height of fame. I possibly had heard the name "Christopher Hitchens" before he died, but I I couldn't say for sure. I've watched some of Sam Harris and Lawrence Krauss, but I hardly agree with them on everything. Harris in particular, I think he's an awesome speaker, but I disagree with him far more often than I agree with him. I have atheists and atheistic professionals, as well as agnostic, theistic, and I-have-no-idea professionals that I respect greatly for their work, but nobody gets a free pass. Ideas stand or fall, not people. As for Dawkins, I've seen him every once in a while, but I'm not seeking out his content; his area of evolutionary biology is not one of interest to me, nor is his style of counter-apologetics. If Dawkins was willing to debate some people and not Craig, then I agree that it's a little crappy of him to not do so. I don't put much emphasis on debates to reach truth, just an opportunity for each to get some specific ideas into the discourse and perhaps some entertainment, but that doesn't do anything in defense of Dawkins if he were willing to debate other people. But other people I do respect have debated Craig. I found the Harris and Craig debate to be very entertaining, but almost entirely uninformative, because I agreed with neither of their positions. On the other hand, I found Sean Carroll's debate to be highly informative, though not as comprehensive as I would have liked. Whether it's Craig, Dawkins, or anybody else, any ideas they have is a good or a bad idea, whether they're a good person or not, and no matter how good or bad their other ideas are. I know that the Dawkins dig was to put asses in seats for the channel, but you have a stronger case without referencing him.

Great response… also intrigues me that atheists and Christians are in an endless tussle between two mutually exclusive polarities so often devoid if intellectual, psychological nuance. New Atheist vs Inerrantist/evangelical kinda dumbed down debates. Both Atheism AND Christianity are far richer than this. What of Pail Tillich or the De docta ignorantia of Nicolas of Cusa? What of the more tragic atheism of Nietzche or the current writings of Benjamin Cain? The conversations could be richer…

Very interesting interview! I've just recently found myself believing in, and committed to become a christian. I grew up with parents who were staunch atheists and regarded all religion as either fairytales or actively harmful superstitions. Dawkins was my introduction to academic debate and when I was around 12-14 years old that was all I cared about. Having studied philosophy for almost ten years now, in my discovery of the german romantics (Fichte, Goethe, and Schelling) I've found that I can no longer deny the existence of God and likewise that of the truth that lies in the bible and with Christ. Especially helpful has been this chanel as I had (by way of Dawkins and the New atheists) a view of christians as mainly being either literalists or dishonest cherry pickers.

The atheist movement doesn't promise to deliver anything! I'm not an atheist, but even I can recognize that he utterly misrepresents and outright discards the majority of the arguments people such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitches make. Has he even seriously listened to these people in more than 10 second soundbites? I will further point out that Dawkins is a biologist and not a philosopher and while his work has gained mainstream popularity, he is hardly the authority on atheism. As apologetics go, William Lane Craig is hardly original, merely rephrasing arguments that have already been made by his far more intelligent forebears. This man did not go looking for answers. He already had a christian worldview and went looking for whatever he could find it justify it. "I grew up Christian, went to a few atheist talks and doubted religion for a while, and then I was a Christian again."

A few million experiences led me to realize that the entire Bible is true (minus little inconsequential verses that are in-house debated by some scholars today) however when I began to realize certain parts of it were significantly real it was when I read the selfish gene. Because it was scientifically proving what the Bible describes as being after the flesh. Or the carnal mind… which is a theme through the entire Bible, that up until that point I just thought of as pseudo science or pseudo psychology. Years later I have now seen Christ on his throne more than once, seen many demons with my eyes and with my spirit, something you can’t even experience until you are born of the spirit, and have cast out demons from people who manifested with a different voice and personality and it left and the person experienced a level of freedom and clarity that they couldn’t before because of the understanding of authority given to me by God through scripture and experiencing his presence every single day. Since then God has told me many many things in the future that hadn’t happened yet that came to pass, and I have laid hands on people and healed the sick and they recovered instantly in Jesus name. Not to mention so many more things that you too could have your eyes open to if you would actually follow the recipe for the experiment of proving God. I read a few others, notably the drunkards walk, the genius within, the 6th and 7th book of Moses, the shock doctrine, the spirit molecule, 48 laws of power, a few pages of the satanic Bible, many many other books some about neuroplasticity, and all these healing techniques, a few self help books, and the Bible itself that I realized there was a whole world I didn’t understand and things in it that were right in from of everyone that we are missing. All these things were just proving different parts of the Bible in ways that most people gloss right over. Or they think it’s saying something different but the science is just saying they knew these things on a different level because of what was revealed. I Did a lot of hallucinogens, saw beings, saw scary things, felt and experienced things that all when put together made perfect sense and proved unequivocally that the entire Bible is true. That there is a spirit world governing everything, an eternal timeless realm. States of mind that are healing, and then others that are contradictory and how that affects the body. I tried dmt and fell into actual hell. Like the one described in different parts in the bible. And I cried out to God like the Bible said to do. God came to me and spoke to me in a peaceful still small voice just like the Bible says. Warned me about my friends, told me he loved me and that my friends were sent by the devil to destroy my life. I mind you I did not believe there was a devil at this point and did not care to believe there was one. When I looked at them I could see demons controlling them and I could hear them speaking to each other in the spirit saying oh no he knows. I was delivered from the hell realm by God and the whole trip went away instantly. Then I read the Bible. Then as I read the Bible I got healed of chronic pain just from reading it. And it was different than the meditation healing and psychological healing I had done through the other techniques I had learned. It was holy, and pure and I could sense it and understand it and know it. I had an abscess in my forehead with tremendous pressure and every time I read the Bible the pressure would release and I could feel my glands working better and emptying out all the fluid and it would heal. (Nothing else worked) reading other things or watching too much the would make my pain come back because of the patterns of influence and communication lacking truth. Then in contrast I would experience ecstasy and healing and supernatural peace when reading the Bible and connectivity in my whole body. If I did anything against what the Bible said I would experience splitting pain, or do what it said right perfect ecstasy. Then the future things God told me would come true. Then I actually started studying apologetics and what the scholarship actually says about the Bible. And all that is like ok and fine and dandy but it’s all week compared to my actual experiences of God and the supernatural and healing power of Jesus. I’ve had hundreds of supernatural experiences where I was being attacked by demons and only the name of Jesus could help and it would instantly work. Then I started finding others with the same experiences. A friend of mine who is not a believer actually had sleep paralysis, and he tried everything to make it stop and go away and one time it just came to him subconsciously that he should use the name of Jesus and he did and it went away he said it’s the only thing that worked. I have since experienced real visions of Jesus on a throne in the spirit realm while I was wide awake. I mean I was there. As there as I am here right now. Like straight up felt like I was in another dimension. Huge golden throne Jesus sitting next to the father God. And this huge demon guy next to me gripping my heart and God spoke and it shattered. Another time was worshipping in church and suddenly was in the throne room again but this time there were angels and Jesus looked bright like the sun. Shining, and he said look at me. And when I did I had perfect perfect peace. And his spirit was going into mine and healing me deeper. And anywhere there was pain in my body was a place I was ignoring him or turning from him and I realized that was true for everyone not just me. And Jesus is in a special position in a place where we don’t understand that is above everything in a timeless realm where he is the perfect image of who we are supposed to be and in him is hidden our purpose our abilities what a human really is, why a human really is, etc etc and we are all ignoring it because there is a dark side using disorder and lies and chaos to distract and confuse us, using every pattern every human always uses to get there way in a way that doesn’t include the whole eternal picture of their future. It’s so simple when you see it. But we have all been so far gone and programmed away from it we get to twisting things like you just tried to, into some irrelevant argument about the most relevant topic in the world. And I know you didn’t intentionally. You’re just looking for some intellectual consistency, I get it. I was there once. But you are designed for something that you don’t even know exists. And it’s like hidden in you. And faith is the key. But you can see it as some blind made up belief. It’s more like a position you take that causes the structure of your design to align with something timeless and light enters, and it is true substance. I’m not talking about some idea I heard about in the Bible. I’m talking about something tangible that literally gives you a knew part or being or upgrade or something there isn’t a way of saying it in layman’s terms other than it gives you the spirit of God, which is something that gives you a type of sense that you didn’t have through having his spirit. It’s literally like if you opened your eyes for the first time after not knowing you even had eyes. It would be like trying to describe what hearing sounds like to hellen keller. No offense I can now go in that throne room before Jesus any time and get advice and he always explains things perfectly in ways I couldn’t think of before and his recommendations always work and improve my life. I have been given authority to lay hands on people and I can feel power run though me and they can feel it too. I had a non believers whole left side of his body twitching and saying I did not expect that. God has healed people and raised them up off a bed they couldn’t get out of seconds before, and I could feel ecstasy leave me and go into them. And they could feel it too. All simply by commanding it in the name of Jesus because of the words I’ve read in the Bible coupled with experience. The list goes on and on. Literally every day proves God and Christ and the Holy Spirit and angels to me all over again. I feel like these guys in the Bible. You’re arguing against something that is eternal and will eventually be proven unequivocally true. So stop resisting God, it’s resisting reality itself and you are not strong enough for that trust me, I’ve tried.

Religions don’t have brands, they have people leaving the belief system and adapting in their own system. This is true even among atheists who try to redefine the word atheism to mean “I don’t know.” But that is diverging from Ancient Greek “a” meaning without and theos “god.” Only when the French came along did they add the T to athiesT. Christian’s follow and teach what Christ taught. Jesus said it in the most harsh of terms that If you do not obey my words you are not mine and I will deny you before the father and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (I summarize sermon on mount.) There are over a dozen times Jesus says that diverging away from the Bible and what He says and teaches means you are not His nor can claim to follow or know him. Evidence documented that Jesus lived Antiquities 18:63. The standard text of Flavius Josephus historian, reads as follows: At this time there was a wise man called Jesus, and his conduct was good, and he was known to be virtuous. Many people among the Jews and the other nations became his disciples. Pilate condemned him to be crucified and to die. But those who had become his disciples did not abandon his discipleship. They reported that he had appeared to them three days after his crucifixion and that he was alive. Accordingly, he was perhaps the Messiah, concerning whom the prophets have reported wonders. And the tribe of the Christians, so named after him, has not disappeared to this day. Pliny the Younger is another valuable historical source for information on Jesus and the early Church. Pliny was the governor of the Roman province of Bithynia, located in Asia Minor. In the year 112 AD, he wrote to the Emperor Trajan, asking how he should deal with those in his region who have been accused of being Christians. Lentulus, the Governor of the Jerusalemites to the Roman Senate and People, greetings. There has appeared in our times, and there still lives, a man of great power (virtue), called Jesus Christ. The people call him prophet of truth; his disciples, son of God. He raises the dead, and heals infirmities. He is a man of medium size (statura procerus, mediocris et spectabilis); he has a venerable aspect, and his beholders can both fear and love him. His hair is of the colour of the ripe hazel-nut, straight down to the ears, but below the ears wavy and curled, with a bluish and bright reflection, flowing over his shoulders. It is parted in two on the top of the head, after the pattern of the Nazarenes. His brow is smooth and very cheerful with a face without wrinkle or spot, embellished by a slightly reddish complexion. His nose and mouth are faultless. His beard is abundant, of the colour of his hair, not long, but divided at the chin. His aspect is simple and mature; his eyes are changeable and bright. He is terrible in his reprimands, sweet and amiable in his admonitions, cheerful without loss of gravity. He was never known to laugh, but often to weep. His stature is straight, his hands and arms beautiful to behold. His conversation is grave, infrequent, and modest. He is the most beautiful among the children of men. These references to Jesus are embarrassing to many because of what Jesus said and did during his ministry like: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up; leave them alone, they are blind leaders of the blind, and if the blind lead the blind, shall they not both fall into the ditch. This is a good word for evolutionists and their blind faith, which has no substance in the fossil record of any micro-evolution or macro-evolution. We only have kinds within Species as part of their genetics. There are no transitional fossils as evidence. [The description above, agrees with the so-called Abgar description of Jesus as well as the description of Jesus given by Nicephorus Callistus, St. John Damascene, and the Book of Painters (of Mount Athos)[4]. God haters attack the teachings of Flavius Josephus as fake news, as if he had anything to gain as a secular historian for lying. Like scholars attack the claims of Marco Polo who commented that the Emperors of China used dragons to pull their chariots and that their eggs were considered a delicacy. What had Marco Polo got to gain by lying? Sir Richard Owen the Father of Paleontology, renamed dragons dinosaurs in 1841. I could talk about Dr Dennis Swift, but enough has been said-Kind Regards Norman

Nope, those are weak. They only show that xtians existed at the end of the 1st century. They are quoting what xtians think about their deity. The Josephus quote is a known forgery, but it's not contributed to him but others What's embarrassing and inconvenient to believers is the lack of any contemporaneous historical mention of the most important person/event in history. ZERO. The Dead Sea Scrolls don't even mention him and they were being written at the time. The references to Lentulus is what's embarrassing. This was a mysterious letter of unknown origin. Shows how desparate believers are to find something, anything to support their theology.

I've always seen Dawkin's "I'll debate any bishop, but not an apologist" as a terrible smoke-screen. Debating a bishop sounds top tier, but they're trained in theology, not defensiveness of the faith. In my own journey, I find I have to think very differently when considering apologetics VS how I have to think theologically. To think apologetically, I have to almost assume the Bible is not inerrant, I have to assume God does not exist, and I have to assume science and cognitive senses are the base of all reality. When I think theologically, the Bible needs to be my first source and God is my ultimate authority. Depending on what I'm studying, the Bible is the least credible source or the most. So saying "I'll debate any bishop" is just pulling a high rank figure out of their rank to humiliate them, while refusing to debate an apologist is keeping yourself safe from the same humiliation. It is terribly dishonest, and is now beginning to bite Dawkins in the butt.

@@cpt.kimintuitiondemon I mean, for any person that remotely understands the subject, he just destroyed his entire book, and destroyed him as a person who can be taken seriously on the subject. I'd have to go watch it again, but I think there's one point that stands out (that Peter shortly explains here as well). I think it's the most striking example, only because Dawkins in his book reiterates that it is his "central argument" to his "entire book". He then goes on to list his entire argument, as analytic philosophers do, in syllogistic format. The problem is, he doesn't seem to understand that logical syllogisms must follow these mathematical rules called the "Logical Rules of Inference", and in the case of propositional logic are analysis of boolean propositions (statements that can be evaluated to true or false like "Ted is 6' tall"). Dawkins writes this logical syllogism, that doesn't remotely follow the logical rules of inference, claims it's the "central argument" to his book, and then the conclusion of his argument is "Therefore God probably doesn't exist" (or some stupid thing like that, as though he's like calculated the probability or something and can show us what it is lol). If you understand what the logical rules of inference are, what an "argument" is, and to have some armchair "philosopher" like Dawkins write a book as though he's some expert on the subject write out a long-winded argument that follows no rules of inference and then conclude "therefore God probably doesn't exist" LOL His argument may as well have been "1) All birds can fly", 2) "I like to soak in a bath on Saturday morning", 3) "Science is neat", 4) "I think life can come about through chemical processes but couldn't reproduce that if you gave me a billion dollars" 5) "Therefore God probably doesn't exist". I mean, he literally destroyed his book, and it's no wonder Dawkins would never debate a Christian Philosopher (he absolutely refused to debate any, because he was "too busy"). Craig usually "wins" the debate for scientifically illiterate people who are more dependent on their intuition, while he loses it for the scientifically literate who notice when his arguments contain appeals to intuition rather than solid fact. That is why you are better off not debating WLC when your audience isn't a scientifically literate one. And when the debate is being recorded for KZbin and other ways of wide public dissemination, most of your audience invariably will be scientifically illiterate. Dawkins knew this. The organizers of the debate event in Oxford 2011 were disrespectful enough to stage the "debate" anyway, with Dawkins' seat empty, even though Dawkins never agreed. That shows once more that it isn't about a respectful dialog, but about battling something out. Not about who's right, but who's winning. One of Craig's arguments from this "debate" shall serve as an example for what I mean. Craig argued that if there is no beginning of time, i.e. there's an infinite past, it becomes inexplicable why now is now. Why this moment (2011 at the time he spoke) is now. He regards this as a reason why the past is finite. This may appear intuitively convincing, but it is pretty much the same as arguing that there can be no negative numbers up to negative infinity, because what would make Zero be Zero then? You can use the concept of an "infinite" for lots of sleight of hand tricks to fool the unwary, and Craig is very good at that. He basically plays a shell game with the infinite, at one point arguing against it, at another arguing for it, always with the aim of appealing to intuition. It is cleverly done, and hard to pick apart in the limited time of a debate. But it won't convince someone who is trained enough to see through the tricks.

@@thegreatcornholio7255 I find it remarkable that you refer to an alleged "striking example", which is the "central argument" of Dawkins, without even being able to name it. Instead, you are waffling about logical inference and how Dawkins allegedly gets it wrong, without ever referring concretely to anything Dawkins wrote. I think it is clear that you never read Dawkins' book in the first place. You think that WLC "destroyed" it purely from what you heard in this "non-debate". Otherwise you would have noticed that Dawkins does not even try to follow those winding ways of logic, and ridicules them instead. WLC in fact begins his talk by trying to draw the topic towards his favorite cosmological argument, which he has spent half his life honing. Dawkins on the other hand kills this fallacious argument in the "god delusion" with a single stone, almost in passing, by pointing out that it is merely an arbitrary way to terminate an infinite regress. In a book that aims to present an overview of various arguments for god to the general public, I find that quite sufficient. It would have been entirely inappropriate to descend into the labyrinth of sophistries surrounding the cosmological argument. If someone is interested, there's a number of references one may follow. That's disappointing for WLC, of course, because he is an expert in those sophistries. So he tries to make Dawkins look silly in return, by trying to convince the audience that the cosmological argument is a deep one that requires a lot of study and can't be dismissed so summarily. In a way that's understandable. The "god delusion" is a polemic against theism, so why shouldn't WLC pay back with the same coin? But at the end, he only reaches those who are on his side already. The "god delusion" is a broadside attack on theism, and therefore more successful than anyone's attempt at narrowing down the topic to a single argument like the cosmological one. That's why the "god delusion" is a bestseller on a scale even Craig's books aren't.

Faith ≠ blind faith. Biblical faith is evidence-based. That was one of the most effective lies that even too many Christians bought into: the lie that faith is stronger in the absence of evidence. I have even heard ignorant Christians say things like “you have facts, I have faith.” THAT is actually delusional. Thankfully that’s not at all what Christianity in general and the Bible in particular teaches about faith. The better word for Biblical faith is simply “trust.” And trust, after all, is earned. It is based on known past behavior, known facts about the person being trusted. And that is the exact picture the Bible paints about faith: trust in God based on everything that God has revealed about His nature and character and how faithful He has proven to be in the past. That is no more delusional than a husband trusting in his wife’s love, and vice versa, based on the entirety of their past actions in the relationship.

Perhaps you are alluding to how too many Christians use biblical jargon that doesn't travel well to the present. Christ taught in parables utilizing agricultural verbiage and components of the time which doesn't necessarily mean that someone raised in Suburbia now gets what He was going on about. It is entirely fine to translate a bit, and be creative in our own right, in bringing clarity and understanding to society today through our own kinds of parables that communicate the same truths Jesus taught and expounded upon. Maybe not so much about "Faith", but as you suggest, "Trust". Your analogy of the husband and wife is a good one.

A Christian is someone who has received Christ, salvation, and life in your human heart spiritual core, you are now alive in Christ. Basically, you're off the sinking Titanic and are now on solid land, been rescued. If as a Christian you start getting distracted by atheistic arguments, problem of suffering, God not intervening in the world, mistakes in biblical manuscripts ala Bart Erhman, etc., it does not change the core, only the focus, you are still on land, you still have spiritual life, even though your chemical thinking brain is directed in other ways. In Christian lingo, you are saved, but still learning and growing. Or, put another way, you are in Christ, but can either walk by the Spirit(as directed by the Holy Spirit in your heart core) or by the flesh(the ways you have learned to cope with life apart from God's leading; some flesh looks very good, some flesh looks very obviously destructive). Christians can know that God is real in their core life, and can also relax and enjoy life, be themselves. He won't leave, and you can't kick Him out of your heart/spirit.

@coluccipat100
@coluccipat100 3 жыл бұрын
@@martifingers Good question. In my understanding of biblical truth, you can definitely have a soulful life as a non-Christian, ie. meditation, prayer, fasting, yoga, experiences that bring joy, rules and principles of living that could bring the desired results, self-improvement, etc., charity giving out of concern for others, even psychic phenomenon, though I believe/know this encourages the demonic/dark side. I sleep on magnets and use devices that hopefully improve my brain and body health, and have definitely sensed many things using these. But these things involve our body and soul, not necessarily our human spirit. Our body and soul are very complicated, changeable, malleable, improvable, but also flawed because we have been born with the sin virus, into a sin/flawed world, hence the need for salvation, new life, spiritual rebirth, God's grace in Jesus' death and resurrection. Our human spirit is binary, either it is empty/dead, or full/alive in Christ/filled with the Holy Spirit. BTW This sin problem was caused by we created beings, both angels and humans, long ago because of God's gift of free will, which He chose to give us in addition to created life. I would highly recommend you search Andrew Farley, "Body Soul Spirit" sermons. Keep searching and asking these questions, I got my spiritual questions answered in spite of my religious/spiritual life...long story but happy ongoing "ending." Again, highly recommend Andrew Farley and his Grace Message ministry, have learned a lot about relaxing with God.

@@DRayL_ David Bentley Hart’s ‘Atheist Delusion’ corrects the flawed and false narrative about faith being against reason, and other myths of modernity, while also exposing the philosophical illiteracy of the new atheists. Unlike the somewhat lacklustre efforts of these atheists, Hart’s book sparkles with erudite and eloquent expression, offering a challenge to the accepted perspective which goes largely unquestioned because it has become the intellectual water in which we are swimming that we now fail to see, or don’t want to see, let alone question, lest we’re then left high and dry amongst the ruins and rubble of our intellectual edifice. It is impossible to adequately do justice to this brilliant book; you will have to read it to enjoy the delightful demolition job, unless it presents too much of a challenge to an already fixed point of view that you wish to hold onto, and are not amenable to changing.

The benefit of Christianity was that any pantheistic notions that adore nature itself are alien to it, and God is separated from his Creation (transcendence). As a result, things work according to the independent laws that the rational personal Creator put into them, and these laws are open to scrutiny by human reason. In other words, Christianity enabled the emergence of systematic scientific research by depersonalizing nature.
