Thank you Heidi! Yes, this day has multiple meanings when we're stewards of what Creators has gifted.🙂 Somewhat related: a few days ago I had a comfrey compress on my ankle. I kept reheating the same tea for each application. Then I had a lightbulb moment. I put the rest of the tea in the dehydrator and reduced it even more. I put it in a dropper bottle and now I just rub on 2-3 drops, let it dry, and repeat. Works Great!👍 Blessings always!💜

I so enjoy watching ur videos and I thank u for them. Its so nice to have people to look forward to watching yall do things I like to do or learn. I live on a farm outside Memphis and I'm at home a the time w no friends. I love being herebut it would be nice to live next to people who would like to do projects w u so u can have someone to help each other out during these hard times. Because I live in the south I am blessed to have God in our convos everyday. He us so natural to us. So I do appreciate ur love of Him. I know we wont be here too much longer and I look so forward to being in the New Kingdom. I am still a kid at heart so i enjoy being around my horses, chickens and my dogs so I can get a little sad that world is gone. I'm the same age as u and I think how blessed we were to grow up without these crummy phones and computers. We were the last of the true free American children. So much fun I had running around on my friend's farm every summer foot loose and fancy free and dirty! Again, thank you for being a friend and God Keep you and ur sweet family!

I have herbs dyhrating right now. I love Mint tea and will use it fresh. I want some for winter months as well. I have been foraging and dyhrating that. I have made Dandelion Salve and Plaintain Salve along with the infused oil. I am going to start making some tentures as well. Last year, I got stung by some wasp, and the first thing I went for plaintain - chewed it some and put on the stings. It really did help.

Hi! Thank you for one more video :) Although dehydration has many benefits, for some plants such as rosemary, peppermint, etc. which contain high percentage of light essential oils, dehydration is not efficient since many of the important oils will evaporate in the drying process. It's okay if we want to put a taste in the food, but not okay as medicine. Rather extract the fresh material via cold/warm infusion, preferably with ethanol/water solution OR steam distillation.

I have been dehydrating everything I possibly can. When there is abundance, we need to take advantage of that, because you never know what next year will bring. I do also can and freeze, but am cutting back on the freezing. Electricity is so fickle. After losing power several times, and now this week the death of my refrigerator, I am so thankful that most of what was in the freezer was already dehydrated meat, that I just put in there for longer keeping. I am concerned only about possible condensation, so am watching carefully, but so far so good. Do any of you have experience freezing dehydrated food and then putting it back on the shelf?
@thistlemoon1
@thistlemoon1 Жыл бұрын
When your dehydrated vegetables/herbs are finished put them in jars and shake morning and night for about 2 weeks. That will help make sure it’s really dry. Putting them in the freezer then bringing it out can cause more condensate.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
I personally would never freeze first unless you plan on drying them a second time. Two main ways to avoid condensation is making sure your goods are fully dry and to never pack them into jars or bags while they are still warn from the dehydrator. They need to at least cool to room temperature. The heat in the jar can cause condensation. But do not leave them out too long after drying if you are in a humid climate or they will pick up the moisture from the air

The paper bag method works great for me. We do live in a humid area, but when we have our a/c on, it works fine. I prefer to leave my dehydrator for my other Farren produce. Like uou, I use my dehydrated vegetables to make soups in the winter. I used to make the soup fresh from the garden and then freeze it, but that took up a lot of freezer space. I prefer to save that space for meats.

So much great information! I'm watching this for the second time this morning...and pretty sure I'll be going back for a third, some other time, in order to get the information about chickens to share with my sisters that have hens (I can tell them to watch but...). Could Patrick rig up lines on pulleys in your former classroom, so you could hang bags of herbs to dry along the lines, but use the pully to lower the lines to your height & then raise them out of the way to finish drying? Not sure it's feasible - the thought just came to me and, in case it's the Lord's prompting, I wanted to share for either you or someone else. God bless!!

Hi Heidi, I was scrolling through your videos to try and find out what kinda water filter/purifying system you use? I'm sure you must have a video on it somewhere I just can't find it. We drink bottled water because the tap water is hard and tastes bad but they are going to bring in a new recycling tax here and the bottled water will be too expensive. I've looked at the water filter jugs but it looks like they take out everything even the good minerals. Not sure what's best... thanks for all your wisdom 😁 your channel is my go to for all homestead and prepping advice.

Thanks, Heidi, for the list of herbs for chickens. I'm new at this...my neighbor's chicken choose to go broody in my yard. When they didn't get her (like they said they would) I thought we should use this behavior for some chickens I've been wanting! On June 30 two chicks arrived. Three eggs didn't hatch probably because they were washed with water. Question...can I use store bought organic dried herbs for now. I'm new to all of this but am enjoying the videos with the hope to start fermenting & dehydrating in the near future. Right concentrating on get a coop for the chickens. Sorry this is soooo long a comment but would appreciate an answer on the herbs. Thank you!

First off I love the channel. Very informative and I like your personality. Secondly, I have an odd question. I know that the less you cook a vegetable or herb the more it retains its healthful properties. I prefer to cold dry foods in winter than to use the oven or dehydrator. (I use sun and wind when I can during summer but we have HUMID summers so things tend to stop at the leather stage. They get very crispy with the cold dry air however) My question is has anyone ever fermented a food and THEN dehydrated it? Does the salt or sugar/yeast inhibit dehydration? I've never heard of anyone combining the two and I'm wanting to try it since I need to keep my summer vegetables from spoiling until we get to winter and I don't want to blanch and freeze. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks so much.
@RainCountryHomestead

Yes, some have. The key is, and this applies to ALL dehydrates, is to dehydrate on a low heat and yes, you WILL preserve the nutrients, most if not all. Temperature matters, This is why I rarely go above 115° when dehydrating anything unlike the standard setting of 140° or even 160° that many may use. That WILL kill off nutrients and will also kill the active cultures in ferments where low heat dehydrate will not. Consider the fact that you can get water kefir grains that have been dried or sourdough starter that has been dried but then you can rehydrate and reactivate them. This would not be possible if all the cultures were killed off

Unless you love freeze dried food, I think they are a very unnecessary expense. I even did a video on the real comparisons almost two years ago here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZW6dJyIpLhsi8U Even since that video I have found more reasons why I will not own one. I was recently even offered a free one in exchange for a review but I turned it down because I feel it is important to stand strong on this as so many are feeling pressured into buying one but cannot afford it or even if they can, there are far better things they can put that money towards. Some to love them and that is great but I have also had some people tell me their own personal stories on how much of a waste of money and time it was. Dehydrating has been the tried and true way for thousands of years.
