Screws stripping out in wood or plastic are usually caused by CROSSTHREADING. To reduce the chance of crossthreading, turn the screw BACKWARDS until you feel the screw drop into the existing wood or plastic threads. THEN tighten the screw. When you are screwing into wood for the first time DRILL A PILOT HOLE! It will greatly reduce the chance of wood splitting and also reduce the chance of damaging the screw head. And put the power screwdriver away. Put the screws in by hand.

Excellent advice, and this is all true to minimize fit problems. However, we should not fool ourselves into thinking that the constant threading and rethreading he's describing won't wear out wood particles in the holes that are being worked. Unless you install a metal insert, any wood will deteriorate over time. I'm not contradicting at all, but just extending another option.

Ah, I guess the whole point of direct-mounting is to make the guitar look cleaner, being so easy to just program a CNC to cut a perfect snug-fitting route for the stock pickups to fit and given most people won't tinker with the instrument, it looks nicer. To put it into perspective, some cheap 80s Superstrats would even have single coil pickup rings for HSS and HSH configurations and a mounting plate for the blade switch. I suppose it was just cheaper at the time to do it that way than routing a more precise fit and, up to today's standards, that just looks so dorky IMO.

I replaced the springs and foam on my humbucker guitar with 3/8" outer diameter vinyl tubing (plumbing section in your local hardware store). Cut the pieces a little longer so they compress a tiny bit. I've got rock-solid no rattle pickups. You could also use this idea to set direct mount pickups and ditch the foam.

What I personally don’t like about direct mount pickups even when using the brass brackets is, the whole idea is that the pickups are mounted directly to the body therefore creating more resonance. But what end up happening after make your height adjustment is you pickups are no longer in contact with the body only the screws & foam or screw & the Allen adjust screw so what the point??

agreed, they are a pain..should have threaded inserts in the body from the factory for direct mounting pickups. I always put foam on both sides of the pickup as well to keep it from wobbling around. one tip - if you're removing the same wood screws frequently, before screwing in go counter-clockwise with the screw until you feel the screw fit into the existing thread. Then start turning clockwise. This can help prevent ruining the thread in the wood.

@AB-80X3 жыл бұрын
Here's a suggestion I have found which gives me the best result. Drill out the guitar where the screws go into the wood, so that you can mount a T-nut. If you do this right, you can flush mount the T-nuts in there. Fasten them with some epoxy glue so that they are fixed to the guitar properly. The trick here is to use a T nut with a slightly smaller thread size than what is in your pickup. All you have to do now is to use a pair of hex style screws that screws into the T nuts. To adjust the height of the pickups, you just place some shims between the pickup legs and the T nuts.This way all the hard pull is only on the T nuts and you can screw that pickup down. If you are worried about the pickup coming loose, just use some Loctite 222. It does not take much to keep it in place, so the low strength 222 for small fasteners are plenty and can always be loosened with hand tools. No more drilling pickups, no more foam, no more rattles, and because you can use shims as thiin as 0.1 mm, you can always get your pickup height dead on balls accurate. The sonic benefits without any drawbacks.

Funny that you brought up direct mount pickups. I'm thinking of adding a single coil to an HSH transplanted from a Kiesel Delos (beryllium single coils). The pickups lack a flange and are sized for direct mounting (also lack a cover and have wrapping around the bobbin so they match the look of the humbuckers). Only problem is the single coil uses 2 regular sized alnico II magnets so half of each magnet is sticking out (each magnet is attached to a thin plate/separator that screwcoils thread though, original guitar had a pickguard), thus preventing the magnets from fitting in the single coil cavity. The magnets can be easily removed, so I was wondering if taking a magnet and cutting it in half so each half of the magnet would fit flush under the pickup would cause any issues. I do not mind just buying a smaller pair of ceramic magnets if the smaller alnicos would be a problem (pretty sure dimarzio rail pickups use small ceramic magnets).

I dislike that no ring look too, I have the ultimate question for you, or anyone can answer this if you please,I often want to change pickups in cheap guitars immediately, but hate taking everything apart and would rather just chop the wires right in the cavity,and just yank out the ones the guitar came with, leaving enough wire on them so you can make some new wires for them later, and just strip,connect,soider, and heat shrink shield the new pickups right in the cavity,to the wire I gently pulled and cut from the control route, and then push the extra wire back into the route, would this work,has anyone tried this,I've seen pickups come with really long leads, and am just not sure if it matters how long your pickup wires are,all I know is it would be a lot easier to change pickups this way,I would rather repair a couple of wires than desoider a switch ect. and there would still be enough wire left on the old pickups to add a lead using the same method, thanks.😊👍
@flip70813 жыл бұрын
Well, if it’s cheap enough the p/u’s need changing then it would stand to reason the switches and pots should be as well. As to the wires I think it’s quality over length. But to ease your bean get a voltmeter and test it. My wife says a shorter wire is just as good as a longer one. It’s just how the butts are connected that make the difference. Additionally, while soldering is nice it’s not a must. Add quick connects instead. EMG does it fit alll of their stuff. Look into computer wiring and connections. To give you an example VW an add campaign in the mid to late 60’s extolling the virtues of this method vs. soldering. Yes, all these benefits of direct mount are so subtle that it is neglible. You're even limiting the amount of adjustments of pickup a) height b) slant across the string and most of it all c) along the string if you have a tilt neck like a Les Paul the pickups should not lay flat at all, they should be tilted accordingly and tip forward to the neck and follow the strings line, so to speak. See bass pickups with 4 screws at each corner of the pickup or 3 as some has. Somehow it defeats its purpose. Methinks.

Never had any issues like this with direct mount pickups. As far as the screws stripping out it is a very easy problem to solve. When you take the screw out the first time put a drop of thin wicking super glue on the hole so it soaks into the threads in the wood and hardens the wood. Just make sure the glue is dry before you put the screw back in.

Valid points. But for those who don't change pickups all the time, direct mount is just fine. Or easy to fix. But what really triggers me is that many tremolo screws on the back (those that change spring tension) are installed directly into the wood without any metal threaded inserts. Like, why? Unlike pickups, users supposed to adjust those screws from time to time going from one set of strings to another. Why not add threaded metal inserts which are super cheap anyway?

You really shouldn't have to swap pickups 100 times to figure out what you like. If you like tinkering with guitars, you should take up building guitars instead of just swapping pickups. The aesthetics of rings vs no rings is a matter of opinion. The tonal benefits of solidly surface mounted vs spring suspended pickups are theoretically true, but not necessarily noticeable. Personally, I solid surface mount pickups in all my builds. Rubber tubing (medical /slingshot) around the screws might work better than foam but probably would only last 10 years or so. When you strip out a screw, you can always use CA glue and a toothpick to fix it. Really, you should expect to have to do that a few times if you're swapping out 100 pickups.

Hey, I have a question: what changes are tonewise direct vs ring mount pups? I‘m planning to direct mount and let the ring for cosmetic, to cover the routing. But I‘m not sure if it‘s worth it...
@AB-80X3 жыл бұрын
@@lone-wolf-1 It really depends on the guitar. Here's what you do to get the same result without any routing. Get a set of pickup rings in brass. Make sure they are brass as brass does a great job of transferring harmonics. Mount the pickups in the rings the usual way with the springs as you normally would. Take the rings out with the pickups in them and measure the distance from the inside of the pickup "leg" to the underside of the pickup ring. Get on Ebay for instance and purchase a bit of titanium tubing that has an internal diameter that will fit your pickup mounting screws and have as thick as possible a wall. Using a pipe cutter, cut two pieces that has the length you measured previously as this will set your pickup height. Take the pickup out of the ring and reinstall it using the two pieces of titanium tubing as spacers. Snug them down firmly using a nut on the backside of the pickup mounting legs to really tighten things. This way you don't run a risk of stripping the threads in the pickup legs. Now mount the pickup and ring assembly on the guitar. Voila, your pickup is now completely fixed to the guitar with no routing or other mods. If you cannot find titanium tubing, you can use brass. The more wall thickness the better, as long as it fits of course. Best part is that it is 100% reversible. Depending on the guitar, it might not be what you wanted. Some guitars get an insane amount of sustain which can be awesome for lead work etc. but it can be a problem if you chug and djent. Other guitars really tightens up overall and still get some sustain, while others just get dark and muffled. One of my Gibson Les Pauls has this mod using Schaller brass pickup rings, and it can rip hero style solos in a way that is just otherworldly, but it's hopeless as a metal chugger. My Soloist on the other hand is a crazy sharp shedder that can djent with the best of fixed bridge Meshugga mashines.

@@AB-80X Oh, that‘s a good idea! Fixating the pickups on the mounting ring instead of on the body wood.👏🏼 I was in doubt, if it‘s beneficial to have the pickups vibrating with the body. Generally, the strings vibration should/could be influenced by building materials/parameter, and the pickup should have little to zero movement. That is given by the more or less elastic pickguard and the loose mount of the pups with springs on it. Pickups vibrating with the body wood, can be counter working, by altering the amplitude/distance of the string vibration relative to the polepieces. So it depends from guitar to guitar. For some, fixed mounted pickups are beneficial, for others less or it gets even worse... Its like with necks on guitar: you want them to resonate, but if they resonate/vibrate too much, it produces dead spots and loss of sustain... I guess I‘ll have to test it, then I will know...
@lone-wolf-13 жыл бұрын
Everything on a guitar has an impact on sound/tone! (Only the pickguard screws and the pot knobs have zero influence)! Let‘s neglect the change in movement/vibration of the polepieces. With a hard mount of the pickups to the body, the weight of the vibrating body increases significantly! Because, hung up loose in a pickguard/frame they act basically like a dampener. It’s the same principle as in archery, where dampeners are mounted on the bow(riser): a extended weight with rubber in between. With fixed pickups the overall weight of the guitar remains the same, but the vibrating mass increases by the weight of the pickups. They weigh about 1 pound together, and this additional weight added to the center of the body should alter it‘s vibrating response to a significant amount. For some guitars it can be beneficial, and for others not...

i just think the mounting rings look ugly

Pickup rings are ugly, just like binding. I love bare knuckle guitars with direct mounting or mounting in the pickguard.

This video is dumb. Constantly changing something that isn't made to be constantly changed and not being able to gently perform the task is YOUR FAULT. Not really a good reason to mis-guide people.
